Konami is bringing three big-budget blockbusters to the Eurogamer Expo 2010: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Def Jam Rapstar and SAW II: Flesh & Blood. And they'll be playable - all three before their UK release.

Lords of Shadow, made by MercurySteam and overseen by Hideo Kojima, spins Castlevania into a third-person action romp for the first time. Production values are monstrous and there are no quick-time events, just "atmospheric presentation, flashy combat, fluid platforming and smart puzzles". That's what Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson wrote when she saw the game in May.

Def Jam Rapstar is Konami's urban answer to SingStar - and then some. The top hip-hop acts of today have lent their songs to the game for mimicry. But what's really interesting is the community area where wannabe rappers can stuff their video demos in front of Def Jam music producers using the game's built-in tools. "Def Jam Rapstar comes across as the real deal," wrote Matt Martin in Eurogamer's July preview, "and 4mm Games could be about to step up, stand centre stage and set the roof on fire."

SAW II is the gruesome, unflinching sequel that provides challenges such as delicately slicing around a terrified man's eye to retrieve a key to unlock a timed trap that would otherwise rip his face apart. Zombie Studios has conjured a story to sit between the second and third of the immensely successful series of films. Will you be able to stomach it?

Def Jam Rapstar will be released on 5th November. SAW II: Flesh & Blood and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be released this autumn - sometime after 1st-3rd October, which is when the Eurogamer Expo takes place.

Gameloft's touched-up version of vintage platformer Earthworm Jim is out today on PS3 for £7.99/€9.99.

That's a lot of money, but Earthworm Jim HD works hard for it. The single-player campaign has had an HD facelift, for starters, and three exclusive levels added that take place in a never-before-seen setting.

Local and online co-op for up to four people has been worked in, too, and spans 15 multiplayer levels.

Earthworm Jim HD was released on Xbox Live Arcade in June.

In 2011, THQ will introduce the West to a different kind of WWE game.

This, core games boss Danny Bilson told CVG, will be "less simmy" than WWE SmackDown vs. RAW and more like the newly revealed WWE All Stars.

"What we do have a plan for on [WWE SmackDown vs. RAW] is what you saw with All Stars. And next year you'll see another new extension there in another way that's just as exciting as All Stars, but a little different," Bilson said. "We're not talking about that yet."

WWE All Stars - in development for DS, PS3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360 - is aimed at a casual audience. Controls are accessible, graphics are stylised and action over-the-top. The game's due in the first-half of 2011.

What direction this new game will take we can only speculate. An RPG zero-to-hero story?

Sony is to post an operating profit of between 10 and 30 billion yen for the first quarter of its 2010 financial year.

That's according to Japanese business paper Nikkei, translated by Andriasang which suggests that the PlayStation business and mobile sectors were both profitable for the company, along with strong sales of SLR cameras and LCD televisions in Japan and in foreign markets.

For the same periods last year Sony recorded an operating loss of ¥25.7 billion, with the PlayStation department accounting for a loss of ¥39.7 billion due to a decline in profitability of the games and Vaio businesses.

During the first quarter of last year, sales of PlayStation 3 hardware was down from 1.6 million units to 1.1 million, and PSP unit sales down from 3.7 million to 1.3 million.

Sony's first quarter financial results will be released this Thursday, July 29.

Japanese publisher Capcom has said that it will not exhibit at Gamescom this year as the German ratings board has not yet rated forthcoming game Dead Rising 2.

Without knowing whether the game will be granted a release – which seems unlikely as the original Dead Rising was banned in the region – the publisher said it was not willing to commit to the European show as it only has one other title for release this year.

"Gamescom allows publishers and developers an excellent opportunity to promote their titles to both consumers and media. Therefore when taking the decision to exhibit we must weigh up what we can offer both of these groups at that time," said Capcom in a statement.

"In the case of consumers we feel it makes sense for them to experience the titles that will be available in stores over the next few months and right now we have confirmed two titles for release between August and the end of the year – Dead Rising 2 and Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes. As you are probably aware the first Dead Rising was banned in Germany and as we are still awaiting a verdict from the USK for Dead Rising 2 it would be remiss of us to promote the sequel to consumers in Germany. While Sengoku Basara is a great title we cannot justify solely exhibiting this one game."

However, the company did say it would attend Gamescom to talk to the press and show its games behind closed doors.

"While Capcom will not have a presence in the Koln Messe at this year’s Gamescom we will be meeting with media to preview some of our forthcoming titles."

Gamecom takes place in Cologne, Germany, August 18-22.
