The Vita and iOS devices are set to receive a new dose of horror courtesy ofDying: Sinner Escape. The game is being made with help from the creator of Saw, according to developer Nekcom Entertainment, though the announcement neglects to name exactly which creator it's referring to. Neither Saw's director, James Wan, nor its screenwriter, Leigh Whannell, are mentioned specifically.
Regardless, Dying clearly has a Saw vibe. It's story revolves around characters being trapped in foreboding environments, forcing them to solve strange puzzles and try to escape. The game will be released episodically with the first episode, "Last Hour," slated to arrive on May 25.

Nintendo released what looks like a minor system update for the Wii U this week, and it's available to download now. Going by the patch notes, 3.0.1 U offers "further improvements to overall system stability and software compatibility."
We've downloaded the update and can't see any obvious changes. Maybe the Wii U just wanted to make itself heard over the clamor of a certain other box.

In an E3 conference not so far away, EA will offer a first look at its upcoming Star Wars games. The ink has barely dried on the exclusive contract with Disney in the wake of LucastArts' demise, but with next-gen consoles around the corner, it's no surprise EA is keen to offer a glimpse of what's to come.
The news was spilled on EA's The Beat blog by Labels President Frank Gibeau, who name-checked Battlefield 4, EA Sports games, and the Need for Speed franchise as part of the company's E3 showcase of next-gen games.
Around the time the post went up, Need for Speed's Facebook page uploaded a new screenshot (below the break) of what's very likely the next game in the racing series. The shot was tagged with the description "Have no rules, show no mercy."
The screenshot completely negates any possibility of it, but we're gonna call it anyway. At E3 next month, prepare to meet Need for Hyperspeed. You heard it here first.

A boxed retail collection of PlayStation Network titles will hit store shelves on June 25, bringing four games and a $40 price tag with it. Best of PlayStation Network Vol. 1, the first in a series of "Best of" releases according to theannouncement, includes When Vikings Attack, Sound Shapes, Tokyo Jungle andFat Princess.
No word on when Vol. 2 will follow or what games will be included with it, but for the time being this seems like a pretty legit way to save "nearly $15." Folks interested in internetless PlayStation Networking might also want to check outJourney's Collector's Edition, which is also a collection of acclaimed PSN games on physical caveman media for cavemen.

etherRealm Studios' latest Mortal Kombat title is coming to PC, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced.
Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition will be available for PC digitally on July 3, with a retail release following on August 2."Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition for PC [features] all of the downloadable content (DLC), including intrepid warriors Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain, as well as the notorious dream stalker Freddy Krueger. Additionally, the game offers 15 Klassic Mortal Kombat Skins and three Klassic Fatalities (Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile)."
NetherRealm's game has been ported to PC by High Voltage Software, which recently developed the HD re-release of Hideo Kojima's Zone of the Enders.
We said in our 2011 Mortal Kombat review: "Not the best or the deepest, but extremely likeable, gory amusement."
Last year, the series' longstanding creative director Ed Boon saidNetherRealm must add significant new ideas to the next Mortal Kombat game.
Earlier this week, Warner released a new Batman: Arkham Origins trailer. It also revealed that DC Comics supervillain Deathstroke will be a playable character in the game's challenge mode.

While Microsoft may have unveiled a new generation of its Xbox console yesterday, some companies are still trying to get a piece of real estate on the current ecosystem. Today, Deezer announced that it's making a debut on Xbox Live, giving (some) users ofthe streaming service access to its extensive music repertoire right from the 360. The app will be available "across Europe" for now, and mum's the word on when, or if, Deezer plans to launch in more markets. For those living in The Old Continent, however, all you'll need is a Premium+ subscription and, as is often the case with similar offerings, a Gold membership on Xbox Live. Jam on.

The Galaxy S 4 is now readily available in the US, but it hasn't had much sway with the prepaid crowd so far. Cricket should be addressing that deficit soon, as it just narrowed down its launch of the Samsung flagship to June 7th. The contract-free carrier is making up for being late to the party with a low up front price: customers can plunk down $55 to start an installment plan rather than pay the GS4's full $600 cost in one shot. Would-be adopters will need to live in one of Cricket's LTE coverage areas to pick up a GS4, but those who do may get a rare discount on a (mostly) fresh device.

Since the Galaxy S4's launch, Samsung's been eager to make security one of the device's stronger selling points. Through its partnership with Absolute Software, makers of LoJack for Laptops, Samsung will soon embed a theft recovery system right into the the phone's firmware. LoJack for Android smartphones, launching exclusively on the Galaxy S4, joins SAFE for Knox in Samsung's quest to develop "the most comprehensive mobile security solution" on the market. While there are plenty of apps that can locate misplaced phones via GPS and wipe their contents, the hope of retrieving a stolen phone is slim to none. In addition to content-clearing software, LoJack will offer a service in which "recovery specialists" attempt to return lost phones to their owners. There's no guarantee that said recovery specialists will be able to successfully track down thieves and reclaim stolen devices, but it's nice to dream. Subscriptions for LoJack for Android will start at $29.99 a year, though there's no official word yet on a release date.

Last week, Microsoft's YouTube app for Windows Phone came under fire for not adhering to some of Google's requirements. The result was an ultimatum from Mountain View, requesting that Microsoft make the necessary tweaks by May 22nd or pull the app entirely. Today, which just so happens to be that aforementioned date, Microsoft has released a new version of its YouTube app for Windows Phone. This time around, video downloads are disabled -- users who already have the app won't retain this functionality, either -- but one important feature is still missing: ads. It's unclear whether Google approved of this update, though that does seem unlikely, but we've reached out to Microsoft for comment. In the meantime, WP users can nab the new app via the Windows Phone store.
Update: Microsoft responded with the same line it gave to other news outlets such asZDNet. It doesn't exactly address our questions, but it's proof that Redmond is in damage-control mode. Head past the break for the full statement.

The crazy kids at Fogbeam Labs have a new blog post positing that there is a trend towards advanced projects in NLP, Information Retrieval, Big Data and the Semantic Web moving to the Apache Software Foundation. Considering that Apache UIMA is a key component of IBM Watson, is it wrong to believe that the organization behind Hadoop, OpenNLP, Jena, Stanbol, Mahout and Lucenewill ultimately be the home of a real 'Star Trek Computer'? Quoting: 'When we talk about how the Star Trek computer had “access to all the data in the known Universe”, what we really mean is that it had access to something like the Semantic Web and the Linked Data cloud. Jena provides a programmatic environment for RDF, RDFS and OWL, SPARQL and includes a rule-based inference engine. ... In addition to supporting the natural language interface with the system, OpenNLP is a powerful library for extracting meaning (semantics) from unstructured data - specifically textual data in an unstructured (or semi structured) format. An example of unstructured data would be the blog post, an article in the New York Times, or a Wikipedia article. OpenNLP combined with Jena and other technologies, allows “The computer” to “read” the Web, extracting meaningful data and saving valid assertions for later use.'"Speaking of the Star Trek computer, I'm continually disappointed that neither Siri nor Google Now can talk to me in Majel Barrett's voice.

The Vine app is all the rage these days. It lets you shoot six-second videos on your iPhone and easily post them on the Internet. The problem is that [Sean Hodgins] doesn’t find the time limit to be useful for traditional video. But you can cram a lot more info into a half-dozen seconds if you make it a time-lapse

FIFA 14 is built using a brand new next-gen game engine… which the PC version won’t use.
The football game will on PS4 and Xbox One use the fancy new EA Sports Ignite engine which delivers a host of improvements involving opponent AI and animation.
But despite the fact that the new generation of consoles basically ARE PCs, EA will not be using the EA Sports Ignite engine on the platform.
"Clarification for the PC related questions earlier," EA Sports FIFA community manager Rob Hodson confirmed on Twitter. "EA Sports Ignite will power FIFA 14 on Xbox One and PS4, not PC."
FIFA 13 marked an important year for PC gamers because it was the first time that development of the PC build had caught up with consoles and brought it into line with Xbox 360 and PS3. That this trend won’t continue this year is a crushing disappointment to PC gamers.
Fingers crossed for FIFA 15.

The president of global games retailer GameStop has played down fears that Xbox One will curtail the pre-owned market.
“Both Sony and Microsoft have said games can be resold and that’s exactly what we anticipated,” Bartel told Forbes. “It’s a recognized way to make these games more affordable. All three new platforms understand that.
“We anticipate millions of gamers will sign up for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360 by the time we start taking reservations. There’s a tremendous consumer demand for next gen consoles and I think the Xbox One reveal will just build on that.”
Bartel added that “GameStop puts $1bn in trade into the market and 70% of that money goes back into new game sales”.
None of which even acknowledges that fact that huge question marks hang over the pre-owned market not only for Xbox One but also for PS4.
The truth is that we’re none the wiser as to Microsoft’s pre-owned plans for Xbox One than we were before the machine itself was announced last night. Yes, pre-owned games will be functional on the machine. Will players have to pay a fee to access them?
And don’t forget the PS4, either, over which similar uncertainties abound.
Bartel risks seriously unsettling investors if it turns out his confidence was ill-judged. Unless, of course, he knows something that the rest of us don’t. In which case we’d absolutely love to know.

Sony Australia parters with AIE to bring Vita devkits to classrooms
Six PlayStation Vita devkits will be provided to the Academy of Interactive Entertainment through a partnership with Sony Australia.
This is part of the PlayStation First initiative, which seeks to get up and coming developers experience working with Sony's gaming platforms by providing developer resources to educational programs.
The AIE is the first school to partner with Sony for the new initiative, which also provides licenses for academic development including PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Mobile, and software agreements for PlayStation Move.
As reported by Gamespot, AIE will incorporate development for PlayStation devices into its syllabus in return for the resources donated to the school.
"The opportunity to work with the PlayStation suite of platforms ensures our students are getting industry relevant skills to step confidently into the video game development sector,” said AIE's director of business development and marketing Neil Boyd.

Motion sensing hardware to break away from Xbox One
The next-gen iteration of Kinect will be released for Windows PC, Microsoft’s corporate VP of interactive entertainment business has said.
Confirming the news to Polygon, Ben Kilgore said the Kinect would be made compatible with PCs, and would be released for the platform “at some point down the line”.
The new motion sensing hardware is set to play a key and central role in Microsoft’s newly unveiled Xbox One console.
During last night’s reveal, Microsoft said the device will now be able to sense even the slightest rotation of a wrist or shoulder, as well as shifts in balance and transfer of weight.
It claimed the Kinect could detect a player’s emotional state, read their heartbeat, recognise specific users and would be able to transfer 2GB of data per second in 1080p.
