What do you get when you combine motion sensors , a Raspberry Pi, and a pumpkin? When it’s Haloween, a headless scarecrow with a light-up carved pumpkin in its lap! The execution of this hack is really great, and the resulting effect, as shown in the video after the break, should be extremely scary to any kids that come knocking.
One neat effect of this hack is that it uses X10 home automation modules to turn off the porch lights for an extra scary effect. After this, the jack-o-lantern lights up and says “help me!” If you’d like to duplicate, or build on this hack, instructions are provided as well as source code for everything on the page. While you’re there, be sure to poke around on [Insentricity] as there are quite a few other hacks available for your perusal! Don’t forget sure to send us any other Halloween hacks that you come up with.

Popular crowdfunding platform now available for UK-based projects
Kickstarter, the most popular vehicle for crowdfunding games development projects, is now available in the UK.
Whereas previously UK-based developers could only pledge, but not create projects, now they can seek funding on the platform. The move has be widely welcomed by UK studios of every size, who have until now had to sit and watch as their US counterparts secure funding from the platform, or navigate complicated loopholes in an attempt to position their projects as US creations.
“Kickstarter coming to the UK presents a great opportunity for developers to generate funds and produce games that are better and more expansive than originally intended,” said Richard Wilson, CEO of trade body Tiga. “We have seen some amazing projects already with Kickstarter and it is now UK developers' turn to realise its benefits.”
A number of UK studios and individuals have already prepared projects for Kickstarter, and at the time of writing, numerous others are considering the crowdfunding vehicle for their games.
“Publisher finance and other sources of development funds are becoming scarce,” stated Simon Prytherch, CEO of Chromativity, which is considering submitting projects to Kickstarter now it welcomes UK studios. “We still have to finance game development in order to bring quality game experiences to the consumer. I think virtually every studio has either a great title in their back catalog, or one or more of their team were the driving forces behind a classic game. I think if you have these elements and you have the right dev team then it is great start for a Kickstarter project.”

I don't have an iCade. Though a tiny custom arcade cabinet for my iPad is a lot more attainable than a full-sized arcade machine, it's still far enough into the "frivolity" category that I haven't made the plunge ... plus, I don't have an iPad, and the iCade is a bit cavernous for my tiny phone.
The 8-bitty, produced for Thinkgeek by iCade maker Ion, takes every bit of the iCade's functionality, and shrinks it down into an affordable, portable, and iPhone-friendly control pad. Nobody on Earth actually needs a gamepad for their iOS device, but this is as close to practical as one is going to get.

Twenty years ago virtual reality was the future. After decades of research and development in university labs throughout the world, consumer headsets began hitting the market, and a world of seamless immersive entertainment was imagined – even feared. For a few moments, entertainment cyberspace flickered into existence, inspiring movies and books, but very quickly it was gone. Some blamed the limited technology. The VR headsets of the nineties had low resolution screens and clunky head tracking components, resulting in nauseous lag. But there was another problem: the lack of support from developers. This was the beginning of the polygonal era – the big players were busy leaping into bed with Sony and its PlayStation console, which promised affordable 3D graphics and a global audience. In comparison, virtual reality looked like science fiction facilitated by enormous, and expensive, head-mounted units and evangelised by companies no one had heard of. The industry was just heading into its era of big development cycles and conservative thinking. There was no competition.Twenty years later, we have a digital marketplace in which a lone engineer from a military research lab can put a homemade VR solution on Kickstarter and receive $2.5m in funds. Oculus Rift, with its 1280×800 display resolution, sensitive motion tracking and 110-degree field of vision appeals to the same bunch of cyber-dreamers that the old VPL and Victormaxx headsets did, but now there’s a route to market that facilitates grass roots optimism. Virtual reality is back. And this time, not only have the technology and distribution channels evolved, but the development scene has also changed dramatically. Digital distribution has allowed the indie sector to grow in importance and stature, and creative risk is leading more surely to reward. You can make a global impact with experimental games now – as Fez, Braid, New Star Soccer and Minecraft have all shown.

UK trade body TIGA wishes to adjust the current requirements of the EU cultural test to ensure smaller, as well as medium and large studios, will benefit from the planned tax break.
EU law requires that Games Tax Relief incorporates a cultural test and studios’ games must pass it in order to be eligible for the tax measure.
“TIGA aims to strengthen the UK games industry and secure an effective Games Tax Relief,” said Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA.
“We propose some adjustments to the cultural test, including the provision of multiple points to individuals fulfilling multiple roles at smaller companies. This is vital if smaller studios are also to benefit from Games Tax Relief. For in start-ups and smaller studios it’s not unusual to find, for example, that the manager, lead programmer and lead designer are the same person.”
TIGA has put forward the following adjustments to the cultural test:
• Points being awarded for artistic costs if those costs are more than 25 per cent of the budget rather than 50 per cent as originally proposed by the Government
• Points allocated specifically for coding
• Points defined for fictional settings and species to allow sci-fi, fantasy and non-narrative titles to secure cultural contribution points in the test
• Recognition of and points available for UK service providers, including motion capture providers
• Points for key roles defined for cultural practitioners that are not currently represented in the test such as concept artist, producer and assistant producer
• Allotting of multiple points to individuals fulfilling multiple roles at smaller companies
• Increasing the number of points that are available for producing games in the English language including official regional or minority languages of the UK

Certain games, like Demon's Souls or DayZ, are purposefully designed to be a challenge, which depending on the player is either satisfying or exasperating. Gogogic CEO Jonas Antonsson thinks that these sorts of games scratch a sort of itch for gamers, and notes that their social components are evidence of how games are moving towards a sort of multiplayer singularity.
"There's clearly an audience for those sorts of games, but if you advertise a game that's going to hurt you and make fun of you, it has to be the right sort of game," said Antonsson. "For the DayZ mod, you have people who have played for days and get killed, but I think that the experience fits with the mood of brutal survival and it becomes an acceptable part of the gameplay. So I think there is a strong audience for hard and unrelenting games - I personally like them - but as core gamers take on added real-life burdens I think they can't spend as much time playing games and that increases the frustration level of losing all your stuff or having to begin from scratch. You learn to appreciate using your time more efficiently."
"I also think that it is worth to note that the single player mechanic is a gimmick - games are meant to be played with others and it doesn't matter if it's in-person or online. The first games were designed as multiplayer experiences, but when computer and console games became a thing there was a need to construct an antagonist and/or a protagonist for commercial purposes," he continued. "You couldn't depend on people coming together to have a synchronous experience over a game. That would have simply stifled sales. And since there was no reasonable way to connect people in other ways - the arcade was the only serious attempt - it became an industry need to project the game as the other player. Playing a game is a multiplayer activity and can easily be seen as such when you watch young toddlers play by themselves. They invent someone to play with, someone that they talk to and interact with."
"The high score list is a simplest way to make a game social, to transform it to an asynchronous multiplayer experience. A simple list allows me to share an experience with others - comparing myself to you in the game. This also becomes a great reason to create games that are hard and difficult to master. Enter the classic hardcore game that allows dedicated players to compare not only scores but progress and in-game assets found or unlocked. But now we can connect people in and around a game through real time PvP and PvE mechanics and the need for pure single player games had gone down. We have multiple plots and stories and build the meta-experience for the entire audience. The premise for making games has changed - reverted back to building multiplayer experiences that are true to the game form."
"This doesn't mean that we have run out of room when it comes to great single-player titles or games that make you sweat and curse every couple of minutes. It means that those titles have to be very appealing and cater well to the hardcore audience," Antonsson added. "So games that drive you crazy can be excellent because they are well designed, not because that's what games are supposed to do or how they should always work."

THQ’s Facebook campaign for next week’s WWE ‘13 turns gamers into cover stars.
The publisher this week launched its ‘Be on the Box’ app, letting fans create their own packshot for the new game from their Facebook pictures, or posed shots for a webcam.
Images can be shared online, or even be printed out so players can replace the game’s original cover in-lay – which features wrestler CM Punk – with their own efforts.
“The WWE ’13 Be On The Box Facebook App will invite people to create and print their own WWE ’13 cover artwork, as well as share their designs on Facebook with others from around the world in order to reveal their WWE Superstar potential or simply step into the shoes of current WWE Champion CM Punk," said THQ PR Manager Simon Miller.
"This really is a unique opportunity to see what it’s like to be a video game cover star and to prove that those childhood wrestling dreams could become a reality.”
WWE ‘13 Be On the Box is live at apps.facebook.com/beonthecoverofwwe. We’ve teamed up with THQ to find the best industry WWE cover star. Click here for more details.

LG held a big launch party today for its highly anticipated 84-inch Ultra HD TV. The launch was held at Video & Audio Center in the L.A. area, which sold six sets within two hours. The MSRP had been set at $19,999 but we now know the street price: $16,999. 'My wife would rather I waited,' said one of the buyers."The article claims a couple of times that "Ultra HD 4K" has ~4000 vertical lines of resolution, but that's not true: the (unimplemented?) 8K spec is the one with 4320 lines of resolution confusingly enough. In any case, that's a lot of pixels. Maybe this means we'll finally see computer monitors break through the "HDTVs are the dominant consumers of LCD panels" barrier of 1920x1080.

SternisheFan points out an article at Wired arguing that game consoles and the business model that sustained them are now "obsolete." Quoting:"Years from now, 225 million devices will almost certainly be seen as the point at which the console business peaked. Gamers are going elsewhere for their fix. The console’s time at the top of the heap is drawing to an end, and these machines won’t survive without radical change. ... Consoles used to do everything best, but those strengths are now being wiped away. Unlike PC games, which may require finicky custom settings, consoles 'just work,' fans have long pointed out. Well, so does the iPad. Consoles are cheaper than PCs? Not when you factor in the growing disparity in game prices. Consoles have all the good content? Well, if you want Nintendo- or Sony-exclusive games, you’ll need to buy their hardware. But for many gamers, Angry Birds is becoming more attractive than Mario.

In Japan PS3 sales topped those of Wii, while Xbox 360 sales don't even feature on the graph given the lack of competition it provides the other consoles.
But in the US Xbox 360 outsold PS3 every month running, as PS3 did Wii.

October 26th, 2012, 00:59 Posted By: wraggster
When a gamer sits down to play a game like Sleeping Dogs it’s simply a slice of fun. But for a small team in Square Enix’s Wimbledon office it’s a science experiment.
That’s because Sleeping Dogs is one example of a game that uses anonymous metrics to learn from how gamers play their games. And with that information, publishers are able to better understand what it is that the public does and does not want.
The data that’s gathered (permission for which is given by the users is signing up to SE’s online T&Cs) is carefully studied and from that Square Enix is able to do a number of things – both in the short and long-term.
Feedback on games is hardly tough to come by – be it on a game’s official forum, in a review comments thread, Twitter of neogaf, opinions are ten a penny. But the loud voices of a vocal minority don’t necessarily represent the reality of the experience being enjoyed (or otherwise) by the silent majority.
“Until you actually have data, you only have assumptions,” Square Enix London Studios producer Chris Dillon told MCV. “You have a particular demographic that engages in forums and they can be very vocal. Often, at face value that can be interpreted as being a clear indication of a particular problem or a particular desire.
“When you actually have the whole picture, you get a much better understanding as to what’s really going on and often, it’s quite a small group of people who are taking a very big sense of need or demand.”
But what exactly are metrics and what does SE use them for?
“We’ve always looked to have metrics in previous titles but Sleeping Dogs represents a pinnacle of what we’ve achieved so far,” Dillon added. “We’ve actually gathered a lot of data about all aspects of the game, even for example simple things like the configuration you have on your PC options.
“For example, we can actually find out trends, like people’s Y-axis inverted as a default – yes or no? We can actually get information that shows up what people’s preferences are for those settings. So when we actually make future titles, we can look at the data and set of defaults that we believe is what people want. That’s a really simple example of how we can directly use metrics and at the other end of the scale, we actually use it to drive things like our global and personal stats and our leader boards.”
It’s not all about long-term planning, however. Data gathered from Sleeping Dogs has already had an impact on the title, with a title update due out before the end of the month addressing a couple of difficulty spikes that SE had seen were giving a high number of players unanticipated problems.
It’s also shaping the direction in which SE intends to take the game’s DLC. Metrics allows for the monitoring of what modes, locations and choices are and are not popular and strategic decisions can be made on the back of this.
So what does the way in which people are playing Sleeping Dogs tell SE about what aspects they enjoy?
“I’ll tell you what they like,” Dillon added, laughing a little uncomfortably and searching for a less provocative term. “They like violence. Clearly, people want to have new ways of creating havoc and chaos and carnage in that open world. That’s what excites them so that’s something that we’re looking into at the moment about how we deliver that to them.”
Also being considered are the areas of the game world that players have to date tended to favour. SE is using this data to shape the places in which future DLC takes the game, which will encourage players to visit parts of the Sleeping Dogs world that have so far been a little neglected.
Being able to see what people are doing and how many are doing it is also invaluable as SE assesses the on going worth of supporting a title. And it’s found that far more gamers than it expected not only completed the game, but are continuing to play it.
And as long as the player base remains active, so do does SE’s DLC team.
Explained Dillon: “If, based on the metrics, we saw a demand for further content after six months then that’s something we’ll look at. Whilst there’s demand, we’ll defiantly look to meet that demand.”
Sleeping Dog’s next DLC, Nightmare in North Point, looks to expand upon the game’s existing customer base by crossing into a new genre. Specifically, players can look forward to tackling Chinese vampires. The download also includes new story chapters, new characters and new voice over work.
The potential for metrics goes far beyond a bit of under-the-bonnet tweaking, though. Dillon believes that as the idea evolves and new technologies allow for greater integration players will find that their gaming experiences reach unparalleled levels of personalisation.
“I think gathering metrics and using metrics is something which is just going to grow. You see it in the mobile industry and it’s definitely something which is happening in the traditional console market,” he added.
“In the future, what’s really exciting about this is you’ll start to see personalised gaming experiences. For example, one size does not fit all, basically. With metrics and real time analysis has the potential to actually balance the game dynamically. We also have the ability to devise content or hints and tips that are actually tailored to you and your own personal gaming experience. That’s what the future holds and it’s incredibly exciting.”

Called Rage Control, the game was tested during a pilot study at the hospital, and tasks players with shooting down enemy spacecraft while avoiding friendly ships. Using a finger-mounted sensor, it monitors the player’s heart rate and takes away the ability to shoot if it rises above a certain level. It sounds like a recipe for a hurled controller to us, but has proven surprisingly effective in practice.

There are keyboards, and then there are Mad Catz keyboards... and now, the company's constructed a new pro peripheral to rest your wrists on -- the S.T.R.I.K.E. 5. Just like the other mission control centerwe saw a few months ago, it features a modular design allowing various layouts, high-performance keys with customized backlighting, and 21 programmable macro buttons. The main difference here is the touchscreen component of the S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 has been substituted for the "E.Y.E. OLED Command Module," which is used for easy access to keyboard functions, quick-launch triggers, and can display respawn timers for coordinating those second-specific attacks. Cash-strapped pros will be pleased to hear the S.T.R.I.K.E. 5 is cheaper than its predecessor, and you can head to the source link to sacrifice $200 on a pre-order now. Mad Catz won't tell us what alien race is supplying the keyboards, nor an exact shipping date -- all we know is that they're expected "very soon."

Toy manufacturer LEGO says that video games have helped the firm beat the economic downturn.
Traveller’s Tales’ games – which have included LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones, LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Batman and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean – have been regular best sellers since 2005.
LEGO’s VP and general manager for UK and Ireland Drew Brazer said: “If I go back to 2008 and 2009, that’s when our business really started to take off. And we weren’t exactly sure why, so we did some consumer research to understand this. What’s really explaining this meteoric rise in sales?
“One of the key factors was the synergy between the LEGO video games and the products. Boys were playing these games, engaged in LEGO, seeing LEGO products come to life in the video game, and it created tremendous interest for them to go out and buy the physical product. So it’s been great.”
LEGO Lord of the Rings is due on November 23rd. LEGO City Undercover is set for release exclusively on Wii U and 3DS.

If you’ve been following the developments of building Android, Chromium, and other OSes for the Raspberry Pi, you’ll come across a common theme. The drivers for the Raspi’s chip are closed source and protected by Broadcom with an NDA. This limits the ability of devs to take on projects that involve messing around deep inside the CPU.
Today, this is no longer the case. The CPU on the Raspberry Pi is now the first ARM-based system with fully functional, vendor-provided drivers.
Previously, the drivers for OpenGL ES, OpenMax, and other goodies inside the ARM chip have been closed source, available only to the Raspberry Pi foundation and those willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement with Broadcom. With this release, the drivers are open source, allowing the devs behind the Android, Chromium, Haiku, *BSD, and the RISC OS to dig deep into the Broadcom drivers and get their projects working.
The new files are available in the Raspberry Pi git, just waiting for devs to take a look at it.
