Research from Flinders University in Australia have linked late-night game-playing to disturbed sleep.
MedicalXpress reports that 17 participants were asked tom play an unspecified “newly released, fast-paced, violent video game” for either 50 or 150 minutes across two nights and then monitored as they slept in the university’s Sleep Lab.
It found that “prolonged video gaming immediately before bed caused significant sleep disruptions in a group of teenage boys, even when they fell asleep at their usual bedtime”.
The findings suggested a 27 minute loss in total sleep time after 150 minutes and a 39 minute delay in sleep onset.
Those who played for just 50 minutes suffered no noticeable effects. No comparable measurements were taken of those who played non-violent games.
"While they went to bed at their regular bedtime, the adolescents' still experienced significant sleep disruptions caused by frequent awakenings throughout the night," Flinders University child sleep psychologist Dr Michael Gradisar stated.
"Sleep is made up of many different stages and the REM sleep, also known as the dreaming sleep, was reduced by 12 minutes among the teens who played for over two hours.
"This may not seem like a significant reduction but REM plays an important part in helping us remember content we learnt that day so for adolescents in their final years of school who are revising for exams, winding down at night with a video game might not be the best idea."

The Kobo e-reader has been hacked for a while now. It’s pretty easy to enable telnet access by modifying some files. Once [Kevin] was able to telnet into the device and draw to the display, he created the Kobo Wifi Weather Forecast. This hack was inspired by the Kindle weather display that we discussed in the past, but this version runs entirely on the Kobo.
The weather report software is written in Python using the pygame library. After loading the software package onto a Kobo, a few commands are run over telnet to set up Python and run the display. Since Python and pygame run on the Kobo, it allows for direct access to the e-ink display.
There’s a lot of possibilities for a internet connected e-ink device running custom graphics code. It’s asking to be turned into any kind of display you can imagine. What ideas do you have for a custom e-ink display? Let us know in the comments.

The age of excess is clearly over. UK?games firms are spending £99m on advertising this Christmas, MCV can reveal.
That’s a drop of 40 per cent year-on-year.
The figures are based on a survey of the biggest companies in the UK?games industry. In comparison, publishers, retailers and developers spent £165m on advertising during Q4 2011,
Our research is in-line with the state of the advertising market so far this year. According to Generation Media, TV advertising ‘pressure’ measured in ratings for video games is 37 per cent down so far in 2012, while industry recorded spend has dropped 41 per cent.
“The video game industry has been one of the market leaders in terms of advertising declines in 2012. So it’s certainly not a surprise to see that continue into Christmas,” Generation Media’s AV?manager Jonathan Chambers told MCV.
“The marketing departments appear to be the area that has been most heavily hit by the sales declines posted in the market this year. In comparison, the toy market has been relatively flat in terms of advertising spend year-over-year.”
However, not every area of video games advertising is in decline. Marketing for certain big triple-A releases has never been bigger, with titles including Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III claiming budgets of £4m or more.
Meanwhile, it is important to note that some of the biggest releases over the coming months – including Nintendo Wii U, Activison’s Skylanders Giants and Sony’s Wonderbook – are targeting broader and younger audiences, says Chambers.
“Buying around kids media is a lot more cost effective than booking advertising around programming aimed at the 16 to 34 year-old male,” he said.

Rationally, a decline in UK industry Christmas marketing spend makes sense at a time when there are fewer games coming out, and the ones remaining are getting most of the attention.
Compare the year-on-year release schedules, however, and Q4 isn’t particularly quiet year-on-year.
Ubi, EA and Activision have their favourites and franchises. The platform holders have a line-up each with plenty to prove. Swap Batman and Skyrim last year for Hitman and Dishonoured this year and you’ve even got a similar number of alternative blockbusters on the way.
So, even if it is just emotionally, it really does jar that the level of marketing spend – which was once a good barometer for industry energy – has come in lower than ever.
There are smaller budgets, and where there is any left it’s also being spent more wisely – spent in ‘more effective’ or ‘more targeted’ ways (read: cheaper) then before. Elsewhere, some companies have sat out the marketing merry-go-round completely.
But £99m is just a number. Games advertising spend is 40 per cent down, and the trade’s marketers and PR teams have to work 40 per cent harder. Early signs are we are doing just that.
KINECT NEEDS TO CONNECT
When new releases fail to chart, most of us turn a blind eye. Who are we to revel in a product’s failure?
But the lack of momentum for Kinect games is worrisome.
Is Fable: The Journey the canary in the mine or the start of a new adventure for Microsoft’s peripheral? Few will commit an answer, in itself quite damning – two years in, you expect it to have a core of advocates.
You can’t say that the market isn’t receptive to gimmicks or new ways to touch games – Skylanders is entering its second year, and Wonderbook and Wii U are the hot new releases from Sony and Nintendo.
And you can’t say that the industry hasn’t embraced market-stretching ambition – over the page we have the head of LEGO and a Disney movie chief extolling to MCV the cultural and commercial worth of video games.
Kinect is a great opportunity for retailers but, ironically, has become a bit invisible. Xbox 360 is the market-leading console – I can’t be the only one out there who wants to see its ambitious add-ons match that?

The next era of HD TV has been given an official marketing moniker – Ultra High Definition Television, or UHDTV.
The technology has until now been going by the ‘4K’ moniker, owing to the fact that it supports resolution of either 3840x2160 or 4096x2160.
UHDTV boasts four times the resolution of the current 1080p HD standard (1920x1080).
For future TV sets to be able to carry the UHDTV branding they must support a minimum resolution of 3840 x 2160 and have at least one input capable of natively displaying a 4K resolution signal.
UHDTV screens are obviously both rare and insanely expensive at the moment. Which isn’t really a huge problem as finding UHDTV source material is nearly impossible.
But this, of course, will change. Many Hollywood films are already being filmed in UHDTV and Sony recently demoed a version of Gran Turismo 5 running at the resolution.
What the industry will be most anxious about, however, will be whether or not the public will be keener to adopt the new technology than they were 3D, which is nearing “dead in the water” status.

The hardware seen above is used to bridge a local RF radio network to the APRS-IS network. The APRS-IS is an Internet Service that uses a web connection to communicate between APRS networks in different parts of the world. The Raspberry Pi is perfect for this application because of its ability to connect to a network, and its native use of Linux. On the software side the majority of the work is done by a Python script. It is responsible for setting up and monitoring a connection with an APRS-IS server. To connect to the handheld radio unit a USB sound card was used. TheMultimon package is used to send and receive audio packets through this hardware.[Sunny] has a few upgrades planned for the system. The device needs to report its location to the APRS-IS server and the plan is to add functionality that will look of the WiFi AP’s location automatically. It may also be possible to get rid of the radio all together and use a DVB dongle as a software defined radio.

Most video game controllers sporting a firearm form factor are a far cry from realistic -- bright colors, odd shapes and obvious thumbsticks leave many accessories looking more like toys than weapons. Not David Kotkin's Delta Six. This gun-shaped controller's first prototype looked so much like a real rifle, Kotkin told us, it had to be redesigned. An orange tip, whitewashed body and a few less authentic looking components don't make the Delta Six look any less believable as a digital soldier's modern musket, but itdoes make it less likely to be mistaken for the real McCoy. The peripheral's internals haven't changed though -- an accelerometer to help players aim and turn, cheek-sensing pressure sensors (for looking down the scope), faux-recoil and its assortment of modular components are still all on target.
Like all budding hardware projects these days, the Delta Six is looking towards the crowd to source its production. According to the peripheral's Kickstarter page, the Delta Six will be available between July and August next year, boasting compatibility with the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii U and even the OUYA. Pitching in $89 buys the basic submachine gun body (with a free rifle attachment for first-week buyers), and subsequent levels tack on additional attachments, bonus items and more. Kotkin needs $500,000 to make his rifle-shaped dream a reality. Like-minded FPS gamers can join him at the source link below. Not a dreamer? Feel free to read on for the official press release (and an additional image), instead.

Over on the XDA developers forums, something really cool is happening. Android hacker extraordinaire [AdamOutler] has managed to port the Android Debug Bridge to the Raspberry Pi.
The Android Debug bridge allows hardware tinkerers full access to their Android device. This feature has been used to build everything from telepresence robots to connecting a MIDI keyboard to a phone. With this port of the Android Debug Bridge, anyone can take advantage of the existing hacks and hardware written around the ADB to build something completely new.
Of course, the port of the Android Debug Bridge is only useful if your Raspi is running Android. Current Android builds for the Raspberry Pi are janky at best, but the current rate of progress does look encouraging. Hopefully with the most useful Android tool ported to everyone’s favorite credit-card sized computer, the progress of the Raspi/Android builds will pick up their pace.

If a seemingly infinitely programmable mini computer like the Raspberry Pi is just too... limiting, we've got good news: the Gertboard extender has started shipping. The $48 companion board reaching customers' doorsteps converts analog to digital and back for Raspberry Pi fans developing home automation, robotics and just about anything else that needs a translation between the computing world and less intelligent objects. The one catch, as you'd sometimes expect from a homebrew project, is the need for some assembly -- you'll have to solder together Gert van Loo's Arduino-controlled invention on your own. We imagine the DIY crowd won't mind, though, as long as they can find the fast-selling Gertboard in the first place.

Astro's just refreshed its high-end wired A40 headset and matching MixAmp Pro, a duo that mash together gaming talents with audiophile chops. The 2013 edition of the headset adds an updated quick disconnect system and re-tuned drivers for better bass response and less distortion, with Astro claiming that they're "the most accurate Astro headsets ever." Returning features include a removable, swappable mic, Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound, customizable speaker tags and multi-system compatibility. The revised MixAmp Pro now allows game sound and incoming or outgoing voice chat to be livestreamed with a single cable, while also bringing new custom audio profiles, a smaller size and an optical port. You'll still have game-to-voice balance controls, Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 surround and a dedicated voice channel with the dedicated mixer/preamp, to boot. The pair are sold together for the same $250 price we saw for the original way back in 2007 -- check the PR and video after the jump to see where to grab them.

Our DCEmu.com url has been underused over the years and with the fact that Google seem to punish any that dont use .com urls we are going to use it more.
At the moment the site is still very much WIP. When i get time i want to add new additions and the biggie is a File Archive and link the downloads from the DCEmu.UK forums to the archive, first thing is to actually find a decent software we can use for an archive.
Also the look of the site uses an old design that even today looks good and like most things its all WIP.

The release of Call of Duty Black Ops 2 isnt too far away now, without doubt the biggest release of the year has spurred the giants of console making out their corners to start an early round of price cuts aimed at taking the heat off the soon to be released WiiU console.
GameStop, Amazon, and Wal Mart have all lowered the prices of their 4GB Kinect and 250GB hardware bundles. The 4GB Kinect bundles and some non-Kinect 250GB systems have fallen from $299 to $249. The 250GB Kinect systems have been cut from $399 to $349. At least one limited edition console also appears to be included in the sale, as GameStop and Amazon are offering preorders of the Halo 4 250GB Xbox 360 bundle for $349, down from a $399.
Sony last week released their latest version of the PS3 a Superslim version with 12GB Flash memory instead of a hard drive and a top loader disc drive instead of the fed into system. Retailing at £159 its sure to drive much needed extra sales
Finally Nintendo have also added to the early sales by announcing it has begun shipping a new Wii hardware bundle that sells for $129.99, and includes a black Wii console as well as Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort on one disc.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has doubled the RAM for its self-titled microcomputer while freezing its cost price.
One of the most common requests to the makers of the microcomputer, has been to increase the device's RAM – 256MB in the original unit – to allow it to function as a general-purpose computer, running multiple large applications concurrently and opening up greater programming uses for it.
From today, all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB RAM as standard.
CPC, the consumer arm of Premier Farnell, the primary supplier and manufacturer of Raspberry Pi computers in the UK, will sell the new 512MB board for £29.95 – freezing at the cost price set for the original 256MB version.
Furthermore, CPC has promised customers all in-stock orders placed before 7pm will be dispatched the same day and no delivery will be charged. With thousands of units in stock, CPC says it has enough Raspberry Pis to cope with demand until January 2013.

There is buzz all over the reddits and Element 14 discussion boards about an updated version of the Raspberry Pi that bumps the amount of RAM from 256 MB to 512 MB.
This new update comes after the announcement of an upgraded version of the yet-to-be-released Raspi Model A (from 128 MB of RAM to 256 MB), and a few slight modifications to the Model B that include fixing a few hardware bugs (nothing serious) and adding mounting holes.
After perusing the Element 14 and Raspberry Pi discussion boards, a few things become apparent. Firstly, it appears this new upgrade to double the amount of RAM was initiated by manufacturers. It seems 512 MB RAM chips are cheap enough now to include in the Raspi without impacting the cost of components. Secondly, 512 MB seems to be the upper limit for the Raspberry Pi, at least for this iteration of hardware. Not enough address lines, they say, but you’re welcome to try and hack your own RAM to a Raspi CPU.
So far, attentive Raspi enthusiasts have found Raspberry Pis with double the amount of RAM on the UK Farnell site and the Australian Element 14 site. Nothing so far on the US Element 14 site, although we’ll gladly update this post when a Hackaday reader finds the relevant link.

Predictions of gloom for the console sector aren’t exactly rare – and this morning you’ve got another one to add to the pile.
EA founder Trip Hawkins predicts that the future of the console market is a hobbyist one, with the bulk of the sector to be claimed by PC and mobile phones.
“The console market is always going to be with us, because there’s always going to be a hardcore segment, a segment that likes innovation,” he told IGN. “But it’s going to become a smaller market, and it’s going to be more like a hobby market.
“You look at airplanes. Most of us just want to be a passenger, but there’s a hobby market for people who are really into aviation and want to take flying lessons and maybe someday have their own airplane. I think that’s what’s happening to the console market.
"But there are billions of people now playing games. The gaming industry is finally becoming mass-market. It’s across two billion PCs and four billion mobile phones, and within a few years a billion tablets. In terms of total audience size, we’re getting into really big numbers.
“In the old days I’d go down to the basement to play Grand Theft Auto. But the Facebook gamer is able to play at work, at home, in a hotel on a PC. They can get access to a browser just about anywhere. People are thinking about convenience first.”
