The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) today announced Harvey Elliott as the new Chairman of its Games Committee. Harvey replaces Ray Maguire whose term as Chairman ended in July, but remains on the Committee as an elected member. Harvey is the Managing Director and COO of Marmalade, a leading cross-platform software technology business, and oversees the Ideaworks Game Studio under the same company group.
Today also sees the British Academy Games Awards in 2013 open for entries. The Awards include one new category, Best British Game, that celebrates the best game across all platforms created by a British development studio.
For the first time this year, studios and developers will qualify for one complimentary game entry if they enter their games into the Awards before Monday 22 October 2012, helping the Awards to be as inclusive as possible.
Campaigning has also been introduced, which brings the Awards into line with BAFTA’s other annual Awards ceremonies. More information on this and the entry process, rules and guidelines can be found at <gp_link type="http" loc="//www.bafta.org/games">www.bafta.org/games</gp_link>.
Harvey Elliott, Chairman of the BAFTA Games Committee, said: “I am looking forward to developing BAFTA’s games strategy during my new Chairmanship. As part of this, I am very excited to announce our new Best British Game category, giving us the opportunity to reward thegreat wealth of British talent in our industry. In addition, we are offering a complimentary entry to each company, making the Awards more accessible, particularly to those smaller developers, and hopefully seeing more games being put forward for consideration than ever before.”
Comedian and gamer Dara O’Briain will host the Awards ceremony for the 5thyear running, which takes place on Tuesday 5 March 2013 at the London Hilton, Park Lane.

Now, for a while it looked like PC gaming was all going the way of the dodo, but - having battled piracy to an uneasy stalemate - it's well and truly back in the big time. Lazarus mod your heart out. In part, that's ostensibly because everybody who considers themselves a remotely hardcore gamer is sick to the hind teeth with the near-obsolete tech currently masquerading as cutting edge console gaming, and many have treated themselves to a beige box in lieu of any shiny new consoles.
Nope, the renaissance of PC is also because of a revelation that's taken consoles waaaay too long to catch onto. PC games have always been better, and it's nothing to do with keyboard/mice combos, GTX 690s in SLI configurations or multi-monitor setups - it's mods.
Consider this fact: once the console and the PC gamer were almost entirely separate entities, chalk and cheese, Banjo and, er... Kazooie. Games like Oblivion, Skyrim and - more recently - Minecraft have brought the audiences together, negated this disparity. Now we're all PC gamers of a sort - especially Xbox 360 owners.
<figure style="margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; width: 620px; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-transform: none; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; clear: both; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: inherit; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; float: none; display: block; white-space: normal; position: relative; orphans: 2; widows: 2; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;" class="article-image article-image-alt article-image-620"></figure>Which brings us to our core point. In an age where every gamer is a potential game developer - and a bloody talented one at that - consoles need mods to flourish. Just look at Skyrim: within a day ofrelease there were already hundreds of user-created mods on the Skyrim Nexus, one of which - a post-process injector - instantly elevated the PC version's slightly ropey vanilla-visuals to Witcher 2-besting fare. Now, at the time of writing, there are 17,000 of them. Some are simply simple glitch fixes, others are shudder nude skins - but an insanely impressive number are genuinely stunning additions to the adventure. Pegged Skyrim as your GOTY on 360 but haven't played a modded PC version? You're still missing out.
[h=3]WE ARE THE MODS[/h]Back in the day, mods were essentially glorified hacks. Now, the savvier developers actively embrace the talent of their gratis global workforce. Bethesda released the Skyrim Creation Kit as DLC on PC, Valve have their Perpetual Testing Initiative for Portal 2 (within days, levels of the scope, complexity and ingenuity to put Valve themselves in the shade were being uploaded). Tellingly, both these toolsets were only available on PC.

Chip maker's cloud gaming GM unfazed by OnLive outcome, says all cloud gaming issues are solvable
[h=3]NVIDIA[/h]nvidia.co.uk
If cloud computing is indeed the future of gaming, it might be a future without consoles. Speaking withVentureBeat, Nvidia's GeForce Grid Cloud Gaming general manager Phil Eisler said as much, suggesting experiences that are beyond the capability of cloud gaming in the near future (like 4K resolution) might be more than consumers are interested in (or given the price of compatible displays, prepared to take advantage of).
"They say this is the last console, and I am certainly a believer in that," Eisler said. "The last one is almost 10 years old now in terms of the technology. As we go through time, the good thing about cloud gaming is it's going to get better every year. One of the reasons we're investing in it is we see that there are some issues today, but they're all solvable and they're all moving in the right direction. Bandwidth is going up. The cost of server rooms is going down. We're bringing latency down. The experience will just get better and better every year, to the point where I think it will become the predominant way that people play games."
Eisler also touched on the recent news surrounding cloud gaming services OnLive(which declared insolvency last month, laid off half its staffers, and sold its operations to a venture capital firm) and Gaikai (which was acquired by Sony for $380 million). He noted that cloud "naysayers certainly had a field day" with the OnLive debacle, but sees its troubles as self-inflicted more than an indictment of cloud gaming's potential. As for Gaikai, Eisler said, "Clearly Sony believes in it enough to put their $380 million dollars into it. That was equally supportive for those people that are pro-cloud gaming. Anybody who's in the game console business is clearly awakened to the potential of streaming games to TVs."

Crowdfunding site 'is not a store' say founders as new rules are brought in
Kickstarter has implemented new guidelines for developers to help protect backers from unrealistic expectations.
A new section named 'Risks and Challenges' has been added to the project page requiring developers and creators to answer numerous questions proving how they can bring their product to market.
The question, “What are the risks and challenges this project faces, and what qualifies you to overcome them?”, has been added so backers can judge the creators' ability to complete the project and whether the developer is being open and honest about the risks they face.
Potential contributors can find the new section below each project’s description.
Kickstarter founders Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler also insisted that the crowdfunding site should not be used as a store, and has implemented further measures to curb creators using the website solely to generate pre-orders.

GOG.com, the scrappy upstart digital distribution provider that's all heart (and ethernet cable) has just turned four, and they're celebrating in their usual fashion. As a distribution service, they've changed a lot over the last four years, and in the process of doing so the people who've been making the weekly (or more often!) trip to the digital storefront to see what's new has also changed: many people come to GOG.com to buy newer games, and they may have been missing out on the classics that got the site started.
To help make sure that gamers who haven’t played the great games in the GOG.com classics catalog can pick them up cheaply, GOG is giving away gifts to celebrate its birthday. Just last week, they had all of the D&D games on sale. Today, they have such timeless classics as Total Annihilation, Outcast, Master of Orion 1+2 will be available for $2.39, while other 23 Atari games will also be offered 60% off. Visit the Atari All-Star promo page to check all the games. There will be three more weeks of "birthday celebration" sales where gamers can pick up some of the greatest games ever made, all on GOG.com for substantial savings, so be sure to keep checking the site out.
On Thursday, October 11, one week before the grand finale, an unheard-of deal with one of the finest indie developers of video-gaming magic will be announced, and finally, on the 18th of October, GOG.com will go public with the biggest change to the serviece since launching from beta-and will have tons of other great news, releases, and announcements as well. Stay tuned to GOG.com, GOG.com Facebook page and Twitter account to not miss any special broadcasts in coming weeks.

September 21st, 2012, 00:44 Posted By: wraggster
DVD and Blu-ray have already made more than £700m for UK retail this year.
That entertainment sector is tracking ahead of last year, with 90.3m discs sold. And it is outstripping year-to-date sales of video games both in terms of units and value.
With plenty of high-profile releases still on the way, sales are expected to increase many times over. And yet, games retail just struggled through its worst week on record, market value dropped this week to another all-time low of £7.38m.
While digital delivery is of course a transformative force for games, the overall shrink of the physical software market is alarming.
A lot of the excitement is around what the new era will give us, but it’s coming almost prematurely, and I’d wager many are not ready.
The retail market, for a start, is just about to climb out of a crushingly awful lowest-point-yet trading slump that is worthy of examination.
Boxed games revenues and unit figures this year are not flat as many analysts and pundits told us they would be. They are significantly down, deteriorating faster than expected – surely faster than companies hoping to make the transition can adeptly adapt.
Our surprisingly-well-timed DVD & Blu-ray special this week rams that home and raises questions about the cultural worth of games.
Big themes to throw around, I know – but look at the numbers.
Although films are priced much lower, that entertainment category can sell around 2m units a week. Interactive entertainment can only muster 345,000. It can barely scrape £7m on the eve of Q4.
Look around some supermarkets, and you can see shelves still dedicated to Blu-ray, DVD racks by the tills… and stagnating space for games.
While that reflects the sparseness of the release slate (which reverses this week with PES, then FIFA, then Resi and so on) it also highlights the lasting mainstream permanence games have yet to achieve.
Yes, film is older, and everyone’s got a TV and a DVD player, while not everyone owns a games console. But take the DVD numbers, and add that to the cinema Box Office receipts, and the gulf between games and film is massive.
No wonder, then, in a fallow year for boxed content we have lost so much ground so quickly.
Ultimately games need multiple ‘Wii generations’, not just one cycle, to cement games as an enduring pastime. That’s why the Wii U promise is enticing to retailers.
We need to keep reaching for a wider audience, not just core gamers who prove fickle; they may keep the industry honest, but they don’t keep it buoyant.
So ubiquity will come in time, and hopefully it can bring a more reliable, stable revenue base with it. Although with the speed at which games are migrating to the web, it likely will all take a different form to the one we’re so used to.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has introduced ‘turbo mode’, enabling overclocking without affecting warranty.
Turbo mode enables overclock and overvolt under the control of a cpufreq driver, and will not reduce the lifetime of your mini PC.
“We’ve been doing a lot of work to understand the impact of voltage and temperature on lifetime, and are now able to offer a “turbo mode”, which dynamically enables overclock and overvolt under the control of a cpufreq driver, without affecting your warranty. We are happy that the combination of only applying turbo when busy, and limiting turbo when the BCM2835′s internal temperature reaches 85°C, means there will be no measurable reduction in the lifetime of your Raspberry Pi,” reads Raspberry Pi’s official blog.
Raspberry Pi owners can now chose from one of five overclock presets in raspi-config, the highest of which runs the ARM at 1GHz.
“We suggest that Quake 3 is a good stress test for checking if a particular level is completely stable. If you choose too high an overclock, your Pi may fail to boot, in which case holding down the shift key during boot up will disable the overclock for that boot, allowing you to select a lower level,” explains the blog.

Over the summer, Microsoft took a break from showing off Windows 8 hybrids and turned its attention to unleashing a bunch of portable mice and keyboards. Turns out, Redmond wasn't quite done refreshing its accessories collection: the company just announced the Sculpt Comfort Keyboard, a full-size desktop model meant to complement all those mobile products announced back in July. Like some of Microsoft's older keyboards, it makes use of the company's ergonomically friendly Comfort Curve layout. In this case, though, there's a split space bar, whose left end can be programmed as a backspace key (Microsoft's rationale is that your fingers are constantly near the space bar anyway). Additionally, there's a padded palm rest, which you can detach if for some reason the extra cushioning isn't doing anything for your wrists. And, being a Microsoft-made keyboard, you'll find Windows hotkeys -- specifically, keys that correspond to new features in Win 8, like the Charm Bar. Speaking of the sort, you can use the keyboard with Windows 7, 8 and Vista, meaning those of you still using XP are out of luck. It will be available "soon," according to Microsoft, at which point it'll sell for $60.
