Sony is set to unveil a new virtual reality headset at the Tokyo Game Show next week, it has revealed.
As translated by a NeoGaf post, the tech will offer a full 360 degree experience with head tracking and a live camera.
Referred to as “the future of entertainment”, the headset has been developed in conjunction with RIKEN team Fuji.
The move to unveil the headset follows the success of the Oculus Rift Kickstarter, which has took the crowdfunding website by storm to raise more than $2.4million, smashing its $250,000 goal.
The project has also received notable backers including John Carmack, Cliff Bleszinksi and Marcus Perssson.
With Microsoft also rumoured to be working on its own virtual reality headset, the tech could have a key part to play in the next-generation of consoles.
The Tokyo Game Show will take place on between September 20th and 23rd, with Sony's headset slated to be revealed on the 22nd.

September 10th, 2012, 22:03 Posted By: wraggster
Valve's definitely building wearable computer hardware, because a New York Times writer went inside the company's Seattle HQ, put on a pair of prototype gaming goggles and tested them for himself."Every way I look, the scene shifts, the battle unfolds," wrote reporter Stuart Isett. "I have a crazy contraption strapped to my head: a boxy set of goggles that looks like a 22nd-century version of a View-Master. It immerses me in a virtual world. I whirl one way and see zombies preparing to snack on my flesh. I turn another and wonder what fresh hell awaits."Better these than Half-Life 3. Oh, did I say that out loud?
An accompanying picture showed Isett wearing the big, chunky, boxy and black goggles. Mounted on top of his head and connected to the goggles was a large video camera. Various wires jutted out, and it looked like Stuart Isett may have had to hold the device while using it."The goggles I'm wearing - reminiscent of the ones Google recently unveiled to much hoopla - could unlock new game-playing opportunities," the report added. "This technology could let players lose themselves inside a virtual reality and, eventually, blend games with their views of the physical world."Isett didn't go into any great further detail about the goggles, but he did talk to Michael Abrash, the man in charge of Valve's wearing computing project. Abrash apparently predicted that glasses capable of "credible" augmented-reality games could be three to five years away, but virtual reality glasses will arrive sooner.Abrash also said that Valve wasn't sure it would produce the glasses itself. The "ultimate goal" is to share designs with other hardware companies, who'll go on to manufacture them."Gabe has a saying, which is, 'We will do what we need to do,'" Abrash said. "We don't particularly want to be a company that makes hardware in large quantities. It's not what we do."Isett's report talked a bit about the intriguing boss-less company structure at Valve, where some 300 people work. There was a nice quote by Valve co-founder Gabe Newell given on the topic of departed staff."I get freaked out any time one person leaves," Newell said. "It seems like a bug in the system."Newell also said Valve was more likely to "disintegrate", and its eclectic body of staff scatter to the four winds, than it was to sell itself to a billion-dollar buyer. The report also unearthed word that the sofa-friendly Big Picture mode of Steam will enter beta testing today.Isett's article comes hot on the heels of a job advert for Valve got tongues wagging. It advertised for the post of Industrial Designer, and declared that Valve was "jumping in" to the computer hardware space.

September 10th, 2012, 20:04 Posted By: wraggster
For being such a revolutionary device, there are still a few problems with the Raspberry Pi. For one, the USB host ports are only able to source 140 mA per port, while the USB ports on your desktop, laptop, and even tablet are able to send a full 500 mA per port.
The official ‘fix’ for this problem is to use a powered USB port for any device that requires more than 140 mA, something that didn’t sit well with [Manis]. He came up with an easy fix , though, that only requires a few bits of wire and a soldering iron.
The USB ports on the Raspi are current limited to 140 mA by a pair of polyfuses. [Manis] bridged these fuses, effectively taking them out of the circuit with a short length of wire. This allowed him to use a USB hard drive (powered by USB, of course) with the Raspi.
There’s one small problem with sending that much current through the Raspi’s USB port. Sometimes, when the high-power USB device is powered on, the voltage will sag, resetting the SoC and rebooting the system. [Manis] did his homework and discovered USB 2.0-spec ports should use a 120 μF, low-ESR capacitor to prevent this. The Raspi comes stock with a 47 μF cap used for this purpose. Replacing this cap (C32) might be a good idea if you’re planning on using high-power devices with your Raspi.

September 10th, 2012, 20:00 Posted By: wraggster
Trade association UKIE has today revealed its response to government on how the UK's tax relief for videogame companiesshould be structured. The association's suggestions are based on a two-month consultation with over 200 UK companies.
Heading that list is the recommendation that relief extends to all parts of the industry, covering small indies as well as established studios and, in a clear bid to attract inward investment, any new UK businesses that are set up by companies overseas.
UKIE further suggests that relief be set at 30 per cent for all companies, with no restrictions on the size of an eligible project's development budget. It also recommends that the game industry set up a team to deal with tax returns and cultural test applications.
Perhaps the smartest suggestion of all is that the relief not only apply to pre-release development, but that government instead recognises that games are services and applies in development of DLC or post-release updates.
UKIE CEO Dr Jo Twist said games tax relief represents "a real opportunity to grow all parts of the UK game industry - from small, to medium, to big businesses - and will help people make even more distinctive and innovative games.
"Having a system that recognises the new innovative business models and production processes in our industry, allowing developers to claim for DLC and continued development, post going live to the public, gives the UK a real advantage over other countries."
UK chancellor George Osborne confirmed government's intent to introduce games tax relief in March. It is scheduled to come into effect in April 2013, subject to parliamentary approval.

Studio would more likely disintegrate than be sold, says Gabe Newell
Publishing giant EA held discussions with Valve to acquire the company for upwards of $1billion, according to sources close to the matter.
Two people “with knowledge of the discussions” told the New York Times that the Half-Life and Portal developer had been pursued by Electronic Arts for a number of years, although talks never progressed far enough to offer an exact figure.
The sources only spoke on condition of anonymity as discussions over a potential sale took place privately.
Despite the alleged talks of a sale to EA, Valve CEO Gabe Newell said that there was more chance that the 300-strong studio would “disintegrate” than be sold, and was keen to keep its well-documented flat and independent structure.
“It’s way more likely we would head in that direction than say, ‘Let’s find some giant company that wants to cash us out and wait two or three years to have our employment agreements terminate,’” he said.

"It's been five years since Radiohead brought the pay what you want model to the public with their successful sale of their 'In Rainbows' album. Now, here's a fresh example of how a game developer is making The Pirate Bay work for him by offering his game, McPixel, for free and letting people pay what they want. Currently TPB has more than 5000 applicants wanting to do the same. 'Sosowski isn't worried that promoting a game on a site known for piracy might be more effective at attracting more pirates than actual paying customers. "The game was already available on TPB beforehand, and I believe if someone didn't want to pay, he just didn't ... It is up to people to decide how much they would like to pay for the game, and I have no worries. I am happy that more people can enjoy my game. ... TPB is one of the most visited sites in the Internet, and simply having a game there is a form of advertisement and promotion.

The last Mana game to see release was 2007's Heroes of Mana; before that, the very weird physics-based action RPG Dawn of Manacame out on PS2.
The other trademarks reportedly filed include Wizardlings, which was also recently filed in the US by Square Enix, along with Agent 47, which refers to the Hitman character, and "Ultima Box," which likely refers to the gigantic collectionannounced recently. Whatever these are, it's likely we'll find out at TGS this month.

Xbox 360 outsold PS3 and Wii for the 20th consecutive month in the US during August.

NPD analysts Anita Frazier also said of August's sales: "Of the platforms that were on the market last August, none realized a year-over-year sales increase. However, compared to July 2012, the 3DS and the PS3 both experienced unit sales increases in August.
"The 3DS XL launched on 8/19 and represented 44 per cent of total 3DS unit sales, which is noteworthy given the fact that only seven days of 3DS sales are captured in this report.
"The current hardware systems are showing their age, so it goes without saying that it would be great to have new systems breathe life into traditional retail industry sales," she added. "I am anxious to learn more about the Wii U launch later this month. And with any luck we will hear news about other systems on the horizon."

Parent with a smartphone? If your kids are old enough to fiddle with a touchscreen, you've probably had your handset nicked. It can be a problem -- you need that phone, for calls, emails and Engadget, but your little scamp just can't get enough of Angry Birds. What do you do? Trust, says PlayMG, but verify. The old phrase ties closely to the core philosophy of the MG -- a device the firm is developing specifically for kids who want to play Android games, but are too young for a smartphone. We met with the company's Taylor Cavanah to get a first hand look at the device and its parental control system.

September 7th, 2012, 23:49 Posted By: wraggster
The NPD Group has released its latest monthly report on US retail, showing Darksiders 2 claimed the software crown amidst another month of decline for the market.
Total retail spending was down 20 per cent year-over-year, at $515.6m compared to 2011’s $647.2m.
Hardware sales were down 39 per cent, bringing in $150.6m compared to the $248.4m made last year. Xbox 360 sold nearly 200k units to stay atop the category for its 20th straight month.
PS3 and 3DS don’t have anything to frown about either according to NPD’s Anita Frazier.
“Of the platforms that were on the market last August, none realized a year-over-year sales increase. However, compared to July 2012, the 3DS and the PS3 both experienced unit sales increases in August,” Frazier explained.
Software came in at at $237.7m, down nine per cent compared to last August’s $261.8m take. Not so bad, especially if you keep in mind these numbers omit earnings from digital sales, microtransactions and subscriptions.
“One factor contributing to the softness we have seen in retail content sales so far in 2012 has been the decline in the sheer number of new titles. This, however, was not the case in August because there were more new titles when compared to last year; titles with sales that were significantly better than last year’s launches,” Frazier added. “So, what we’re seeing impact August results is the domino effect of the light release schedule from earlier in the year. That lack of new releases has had a significant impact on subsequent month’s sales.”
As far as individual products go, Darksiders 2 finished ahead of a power pair of 3DS titles. New Super Mario Bros. 2 grabbed the runner-up spot ahead of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
Nintendo has chimed in with retail numbers for both of the aforementioned titles. NSMB2 sold over 240k units, and Dream Drop Distance moved over 180k units.
Top-selling software August ‘12
- Darksiders 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
- New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)
- Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream, Drop Distance (3DS)
- NCAA Football 13 (PS3, Xbox 360)
- Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (3DS, DS, PC, PS3, Vita, Wii, Xbox 360)
- Sleeping Dogs (PS3, Xbox 360)
- Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (PS3, Xbox 360)
- Batman: Arkham City (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops (DS, PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)
- The Amazing Spider-Man (3DS, DS, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)
