Following its release last month, NCsoft's hugely anticipated MMO Guild Wars 2 has smashed expectations by topping official charts across Europe.
Having been released for just ten days, the title now holds the number one spot in the official All Formats chart across Europe, including the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, Sweden Norway, Finland, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Speaking of the game's success, Mike O'Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet said: "Our games have always been well-received in Europe, but this level of enthusiasm is both awesome and humbling."
“It also impresses upon us the responsibility we have to our players and explains why we’ve taken steps recently to constrain sales of Guild Wars 2 to ensure the highest quality of service. Of course, we hope to remedy this in the near future," he continued.
As the latest title in the MMO genre, Guild Wars 2 takes players to the world of Tyria and provides them with a massive role playing environment, filled with intense battles and epic quest lines. Guild Wars 2 differs from its rivals by maintaining a free-to-play pricing model, that eliminates the monthly subscription fee common amongst most MMO titles.
With Guild Wars 2's biggest rival - World of Warcraft - releasing its upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion on September 25th, it will be interesting to see if Guild Wars 2 can maintain its success and retain the top spot of the charts.

There are 211.5 million people playing games in the United States, a loss of 12 million players (5 percent) from 2011's numbers, the NPD reports. Not all of the gaming categories lost players, however: Mobile gamers rose 9 percentage points to take 22 percent, and digital gamers gained 4 percentage points to 16 percent. This makes mobile gamers the largest audience segment, surpassing core gamers, which held the top spot in 2011.
The remaining categories – core, family and kid, light PC, and avid PC gamers – lost 17.4 million people this year. This is a "slight decline," the NPD says.
"Given the long lifecycles of the current consoles and the increasing installed base of smartphones and tablets, it's not surprising to see a slight decline in the core gamer segment," Anita Frazier, industry analyst for the NPD, says. "It's the revenue contribution of the core gamer segment that continues to outpace all other segments, and remains vital to the future of the industry."
People buying games spent an average of $48 on physical copies and $16 on digital games from June to August. Core gamers spent the most on physical games, at $65. Almost 14 percent of all gamers purchased microtransactions or additional game content in the past three months, up from 11 percent in the same period in 2011; 27 percent of core gamers and 23 percent of digital gamers purchased in-game content.

The total number of US gamers has seen a significant reduction in 2012, according to an NPD report.
USA Today reports the group’s Gamer Segmentation 2012: The New Faces of Gamers report estimates there are currently 211.5m gamers in America, a five per cent decline from 2011.
The report specifies six type of gamers, and the only ones to show an increase were the mobile (up 22 per cent) and digital (up 15 per cent) segments. Mobile games represent the largest type ahead of core gamers.
“Given the long lifecycles of the current consoles and the increasing installed base of smartphones and tablets, it’s not surprising to see a slight decline in the Core Gamer segment,” explained NPD analyst Anita Frazier. “It’s the revenue contribution of the Core Gamer segment that continues to outpace all other segments, and remains vital to the future of the industry.
“While this study segments the gaming audience based on a number of key variables and attributes, looking across the total gaming audience we see a tremendous impact from mobile gaming, particularly on smartphones and tablets. Because of this, our next study, which will be released later this month, takes a deeper look into the area of mobile gaming.”

Most games publishers are dipping their toe in the tempting waters of free-to-play gaming, but Ubisoft is diving in with both feet.
The publisher has invited press from across Europe to its Digital Days event in Paris today, where the firm is showing off its blockbuster free-to-play line-up – headlined by established brands with the previously announced Ghost Recon Online and a new Assassin’s Creed title.
Assassin’s Creed: Utopia is the result of a collaboration between Ubisoft and Japanese mobile gaming giant GREE. The iOS and Android title sees players creating colonies in 16th Century America and using their settlement’s wealth to fund and grow an assassin’s guild – laying the foundations for next month’s Assassin’s Creed III.
The game will be free to download, but players will be able to accelerate their progress by buying items that boost their colony’s production, new fighters to defend it and weapons to make them stronger.
Assassin's Creed: Utopia is due for release on iOS and Android later this year.
Elsewhere, the publisher showed off new IP – most notably, The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot. This title is the first free-to-play game to be developed by Ubisoft’s acclaimed Montreal studio – known for creating the Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell and Far Cry titles, as well as the surprise hit of E3 Watch Dogs.
This PC game challenges players to create a trap-laden castle to protect their treasure, while raiding castles designed by Ubisoft and other players to increase their wealth.
That such a high-profile studio is working on free-to-play projects is indicative of Ubisoft’s determination to make its mark on the sector. Also present at the Digital Days event were Silent Hunter Online, Anno Online and Might & Magic Raiders – all of which bring popular Ubisoft brands into the F2P space.

September 7th, 2012, 00:03 Posted By: wraggster
Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada has a visionary plan to cope with the digital transition, should the static games console become irrelevant.
Last week, Square Enix unveiled Core Online, a brand new HD games streaming service for browsers. The service has back catalogue titles available free-to-play with a unique TV-like advertising element that gives players credits to keep playing if they watch interstitial ads.
It's just one part of a forward thinking online strategy at the firm preparing it for the rise of cloud and server based games, and the possible extinction of PlayStations and Xboxes "in the next five years or so, give or take a few years".
In an interview with MCV this week, Wada and Square Enix Europe CEO Phil Rogers explained the thinking behind the service.
Wada called Core Online a "relaxed experiment" and "a rough plan B we are experimenting with" as it still is dedicated to pay-to-download titles and games on disc - but it is needed as the technology market shifts back and forth between technologies.
Said Wada: "Previously when we used to think about how to make a game work, we only had to think about the game console, and now time has changed.
"But if you think about the previous 30 to 40 years in computing, we had host computers or a server, and the clients running on them. The pendulum has been swinging between them over time, from IBM on servers to Microsoft on PC and then back to servers with companies like Google and again back to host computers with Apples native apps. Currently, HTML 5 and Google Chrome has shifted back to servers again."
Core Online has been built using a mixture of Square Enix and Google technology, and helps the firm hedge its bets "and to cope with this transformational period in our industry," said Wada.
"We have a polarised way of thinking," he said on the fact that the firm is developing both cloud-based and traditional games, but he's adamant that in time the server will totally dominate.
"Currently only the CPU and the GPU remains on the computer side. But in the next five years or so, give or take a few years, there is a chance you won't even need the CPU and GPU on the client side."
Wada's claim come right on schedule - three years ago he similarly told MCV that consoles faced extinction within the next decade. His visionary strategy has clearly unwavered as, since then, OnLive has sprung up, as has Gaikai, now owned by Sony.
Square Enix Europe CEO Rogers added the firm's mantra now "has become 'new ways to pay and play'.
"We see tremendous changes in the industry, exciting changes - people say the industry is in trouble but really the boundaries are being pushed further than ever.
"The real power here is where those changes meet technical and engineering ideas - and that's what happened with CoreOnline."

Over 300,000 units scheduled for customers worldwide
Raspberry Pi is to be manufactured in UK the for the first time, thanks to a multi-million pound deal with Sony UK Technology Centre and electronics distributor Premier Farnell.
The deal represents a major coup for the UK manufacturing industry and the British-designed Raspberry Pi, which to date has only been manufactured in China due to production costs.
Sony UK Tec’s manufacturing site will initially produce over 300,000 units for customers worldwide, which is expected to create up to 30 additional jobs.
The computer, which has been developed by the non-profit Raspberry Pi Foundation, aims to stimulate young people's interest in programming.
“When Pete Lomas and I built the first Raspberry Pi’s for testing last year, we never dreamed it would become so popular so quickly,” said Eben Upton, co-founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced that the 2.0 boards will be available within the next month.
“They’ll be filtering out over the next month as the last stocks of the revision 1.0 at each distributor and in each geography are exhausted,” states the Raspberry Pi blog.
“In the six months since we launched Raspberry Pi, we’ve received a lot of feedback about the original board design. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be gradually rolling out a new revision 2.0 PCB which incorporates some of the most popular suggestions.”
Upgraded features include:
• The ability to power a Pi with a powered USB hub
• A fix for an issue that caused problems when Pis were connected to TVs by HDMI
• A new reset circuit
• Mounting holes
• The four GPIO signals originally used for version identification have been removed (These were never read by the system software and were redundant)
• Two minor changes to the silk screen

Konami has also detailed the pre-order incentive for PES 2013 - a limited UEFA Champions League steelbook edition, which includes special DLC code to redeem the Historic UEFA Champions League Match Balls used in the competition and other official elements.
The UK will also offer a second, Manchester United-themed steelbook edition for pre-orders, boasting the club’s livery on its cover.

Today ive updated another of our sites.
The Dreamcast site is the original site that started DCEmu UK way back in 2004. For those who dont know the Dreamcast was a very powerful console that due to piracy and Sega running out of money lost the battle to the PS2 despite the console having an armada of AAA rated games.
DCEmu`s Dreamcast site is a great place to relive the last 8 years of the Dreamcast and even though it has slowed down massively the homebrew fans of the Dreamcast still are releasing emulators and games for it after all these years.

The number of mobile gamers is up, however
The NPD Group today announced that there are about 211.5 million gamers in the US, which is down five percent compared to last year. The firm's newest report, Gamer Segmentation 2012: The New Faces of Gamers, notes that of the six gamer segments outlined, only Mobile Gamers and Digital Gamers saw increases in the number of gamers when compared to 2011, with Mobile Gamers up 9 points to 22 percent and Digital Gamers up 4 points to 16 percent.
Importantly, Mobile Gamers now represent the largest gamer segment, ahead of Core Gamers, which was the largest segment in 2011. NPD also said that the Family+Kid gamers segment experienced the most significant decline of an estimated 17.4 million gamers.
"Given the long lifecycles of the current consoles and the increasing installed base of smartphones and tablets, it's not surprising to see a slight decline in the Core Gamer segment," said Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group. "It's the revenue contribution of the Core Gamer segment that continues to outpace all other segments, and remains vital to the future of the industry."
"While this study segments the gaming audience based on a number of key variables and attributes, looking across the total gaming audience we see a tremendous impact from mobile gaming, particularly on smartphones and tablets," she continued. "Because of this, our next study, which will be released later this month, takes a deeper look into the area of mobile gaming."

September 5th, 2012, 21:52 Posted By: wraggster
Total War Battles: Shogun lead designer Renaud Charpentier has slammed the lack of design focus in today's developers, telling us that 70 per cent of games simply do not pass muster as a result.
Renaud's comments followed an impassioned session at Unite 2012 last month in which he and fellow The Creative Assemblycolleagues Nick Farley and Mattijs Van Delden stressed the value of prototyping early on in a project.
"When you look at the market, probably 20 to 30 per cent of the games are confident, and maybe 60 to 70 per cent are not good enough," he told us at the Amsterdam conference.
"Usually, they run. Most of them don't crash - most are competent technically. Most of them look okay or even good, but they play like shit."
It's a bold statement, borne of Charpentier's frustration with development studios' focus on technological progress over gameplay refinement. Too many developers, he believes, fail to recognise the benefit of prototyping gameplay and game ideas early enough in a project to inform other key areas of the development process.
"Their biggest risk is not on the tech, not on the art, it's on the design," he insists. "You have to front-load that: it has to drive many of the other decisions.
"Hopefully that's something we manage to do at Creative Assembly, and that we managed to do with Battles, but it's still something that I think is lacking [in the industry] and it has to change.
"We can't keep releasing games that anyone can tell are not interesting to play after 30 minutes when 20 or 30 people spent two years working on them. It doesn't make any sense.
There will always be ways to squeeze a little more performance out of hardware, find the extra memory you need or render a game object more efficiently, Charpentier asserts - even late in the day - but no developer can make a "turd into a great game to play" in the final three weeks of production. Despite calling for greater weight to be placed on design, however, he still recognises the need for the tools and efficient workflows that will make early-day prototyping productive.
"Is not about writing a 100-page document of design that is totally useless, no one will read and will be out of date by the time they do," he says. "It's about crafting the game.
"For that you need tech that is ready. I've [faced this problem] in previous teams, where I would have wanted to prototype, but the engineer tells you the animation system for combat won't be ready in four months. What do you do? You're blocked. You can't be absolutely sure that certain timings will work, certain controls."
But despite his experience from inside the industry, perhaps Charpentier biggest frustration is from the perspective of a gamer.
"As a player, I hate going through the burden of downloading a game, installing it, rebinding the controller, going through the tutorial, playing another couple of hours and then realising it's ****ing boring!"

President Frank Gibeau confirms he has seen new consoles
EA president Frank Gibeau has spoken about the relationship between the market and the console cycle, revealing that his company has 4-5 new IPs in the works for next generation consoles.
The lack of new IP has appalled many in the industry, who say sequelitis is the sickness unto death in a creative medium.
Gibeau, however, feels this is a natural pattern resulting from greater expectations on new IPs to bring something fresh and exciting to games.
"The time to launch an IP is at the front-end of the hardware cycle, and if you look historically the majority of new IPS are introduced within the first 24 months of each cycle of hardware platforms," Gibeau told Games Industry International.
"Right now, we're working on 3 to 5 new IPs for the next gen, and in this cycle we've been directing our innovation into existing franchises."

And yet, upon seeing Blaze's Neo Geo X system, I was overwhelmed with the desire to possess it. Other usually rational Joystiq staffers have expressed similar feelings.
I have a hard time understanding why I would be so interested in a new console that only plays old games. But I think the dedicated nature of it is exactly the draw.

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau has labelled next generation consoles the company's currently making games for "spectacular".
<figure style="margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; width: 300px; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-transform: none; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; clear: both; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: inherit; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; float: right; display: block; white-space: normal; position: relative; orphans: 2; widows: 2; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;" class="article-image article-image-alt article-image-300"></figure>Having said last week that Xbox 720 andPlayStation 4 are due to launch "in about a year's time", the man in charge of the EA Sports, EA Games, Maxis and BioWare labels told GamesIndustry.biz the publisher is relishing the prospect of a new hardware generation."When you launch a new IP it needs to do something really, really remarkable, and that's easier to do when you have a new set of technology that gives you novel capabilities. This is the longest cycle that any of us have ever seen, and we're at the point where a little bit of fatigue has set in, and people are wondering what they can possibly do next.
"I've seen the machines that we're building games for, and they're spectacular. Gen 4 hardware is a huge opportunity, and it's going to lead to a huge growth spurt for the industry.
"The only thing that could really displace that is really high-end tablets and IPTV, and IPTV is further out than just a couple of years," he added. "But those are the only two places I see that kind of risk occurring, and the good news for EA is that we're going to publish across all of them. We might ultimately find that to our advantage."
Oskari Hakkinen, head of franchise development at Remedy, said last month that the next gen consoles his studio's also developing for represent "a quantum leap" from those currently available.

Thermaltake and BMW DesignworksUSA's Level 10 M gaming mouse has made the transition from concept to reality. Unlike its teasing appearance in January, the unit now has some real-world specifications, including five programmable keys and a Z-key that'll change your gaming profile on the fly. The optical unit's DPI was a closely guarded secret, but the companies have confirmed it'll default to 5,000, but can be tweaked up to 8,200 if you need it. Sweaty-palmed gamers will appreciate the holes drilled in the top, preventing your secretions from loosing your grip from the handset. It's available right now for $100, just make sure you've worked out if you're gonna call it a "Beemer" or "Bimmer" before you buy -- and yes, we're resolutely in the former camp.
Update: Well, this is odd. The image above was supplied by BMW (give or take the odd creative addition), but Thermaltake's version, included after the break, makes the unit look very different indeed.
