UK IT distributor VIP Computers has today announced that its Evolution: The Future of Gaming Technology expo has sold out.
The event takes attendees on a time-travelling journey through PC gaming as well as demonstrating the latest technologies and ground breaking games.

Only 80s kids will get this: remember when computers had built-in keyboards, like the Apple II line, or the Commodore 64? That’s a form factor duplicated by case modders many times over the years, but [preamp]‘s project is the first time its been done using a Raspi (German, Google translation).
For his build, [preamp] used what he considers the best keyboard in the world, theCherry G80-3000. Except for the HDMI port, just about every plug was moved to the back side of the keyboard with the help of an Ethernet jack, a USB hub, and RCA jack. Audio is missing, but for an extremely portable system [preamp]‘s RaspCherry Pi is at the top of its class.
We were wondering when someone would shove a Raspi into a keyboard, and we couldn’t be happier that [preamp] chose a Cherry keyboard for his build; they’re wonderful input devices second only to the 8 pound behemeoth used to write this post.

The Pure is just 8mm thick and pretty darn affordable at £69.
Measuring just 8mm thick, the BeBook Pure is the thinnest e-ink e-reader in the world - by way of comparison Amazon's thinnest device is the Kindle Keyboard at 8.5mm.
With in a rubber shell and loaded with 4GB memory, the £69 device also supports micro SD cards up to 32GB.
Some potential customers may be put off by the lack of a touchscreen (the Pure is operated using five hard keys beneath the display and two on the side) but at £20 less than the cheapest Kindle and less than similar models from Kobo and Barnes & Noble, this new entrant to the competitive ereader market may find some love.
The Pure supports a variety of file formats, including the PDF and epub standards (with or without DRM) in addition to less used formats like .txt and .html.
While the battery isn't going to blow the world away, BeBook claim it can run for three weeks on a single charge and is good for around 12,000 pageviews.

Consumers spend a lot of time complaining about day one DLC. The thing is, they spend a lot of time buying it, too.
It’s a phenomenon seen across the entire industry. The amount of vitriol aimed at Call of Duty, for instance, would suggest that it’s not popular. When in fact it’s the best selling series of the modern era.
The simple fact remains that what a gamer says is often not what a gamer does. (Plus, never forget that the online vocal minority do not and never have spoken for the majority.)
“Contrary to what you might hear on the internet fans do want more content,” BioWare’s director of online development Fernando Melo told an audience at GDC Europe, as reported by IGN.
“They tend to say, ‘I want it now’. The problem with day one content and the challenge around it is that the right answer for now is different for every player. There is no single right time, there is no single now. It’s subjective, and it’s unique to every player.”
Melo went on to explain that DLC does a great job of keeping players actively engaged in the game, with player activity spiking significantly every time new content is issued.
Interestingly, each DLC release is also accompanied by a jump in sales of previously released content.
Also of note is the fact that while retail sales of game typically drop off soon after launch and never recover, DLC purchasing habits have a slower but more consistent pattern. “DLC is really safe, from a risk perspective”, Melo added.
None of which addresses the core consumer issue – if DLC content is ready for day one, then why is it not included in the game proper?
DLC traditionally falls into two camps. On the one hand you have studios like Rockstar. It works hard on completing a title and getting it to consumers. Once that is achieved it goes away and develops further content, the work on which is funded by the resulting sales.
On the other side of the table there’s strategised DLC. This is content designed purely with one purpose – increasing the revenue generated by each game sale. Much of it is developed in tandem with the main product (and can sometimes even be found residing on the disc that consumers already own) and only ring-fenced from the main game as selling it separately will increase revenue.
Publishers and developers, however, will deny this until they’re blue in the face. And BioWare is no exception.
“If you have a consistent culture of how you’re communicating to your fans, that will increase the number of people that are more likely to believe in your explanation,” Melo added, dodging the issue.
“You’re not lying to them, but they will take whatever you’re saying as like, ‘you’re lying to us’. That will always be there. The only way that that’s going to go away is you fast forward a few more years, where this is just normal. Every game is digital from day one. Every game is an ongoing service, almost like an MMO, where on any given day new content shows up. Maybe that’s part of the base package, and maybe it’s a premium feature.”
The conclusion to be drawn is obvious – if consumers really reject the idea of day one DLC then all they need do is not purchase it. All publisher decisions are financiall lead. If day one DLC didn’t sell, it wouldn’t be offered.
Moaning on the internet will change nothing. As is often the way in life, do the only thing you can that get’s noticed – vote with your wallet.

Taking long exposure photographs at night and painting within them using an iPad may be old hat, butbuilding your own light painting rig? That could earn you some serious geek cred, and according to Adafruit, it isn't even all that hard. In a new walkthrough, the team fashioned such a contraption using aRaspberry Pi, a python script with under 60 lines of code, some open source software and a handful of electronic components. Not satisfied with the typical light wand, they decided to spice things up with a circular fixture built from PVC pipes and a hula hoop to hold the ribbon of LEDs. After being attached to a bike and paraded around at night, it created the 3D effect in the masterpiece above. The sale of digital product could account for the majority of EA’s revenue within 24 to 26 months.
That’s according to EA COO Peter Moore, who told Reuters that: "There will come a point, whether it is two or three years from now, when we say 'We are doing more in digital media now than we are in physical media' and it's clearly not far away."
EA currently expects global revenue for packaged goods sales of $2.6bn and digital revenue of $1.7bn for the current fiscal year. Its digital

The amount spent in the US on video game content in all forms from April to June 2012 totalled $2.88bn. That figure divides into $1bn in new physical video and PC game software, $1.47bn from game content in digital formats including full game and DLC content downloads, subscriptions, social network and mobile games.
In March it was reported that digital was already accounting for half of the PC market.

Abertay University has announced the winners of its Dare To Be Digital competition.
Kind Of A Big Deal's Starcrossed, Loan Wolf Games' Pixel Storyand Raptor Games' Project Thanatos all scooped prizes, and will now compete for the BAFTA Ones To Watch award.
The three winning teams were chosen from 15 entrants and their games were played by a record-breaking 10,000 attendees.
"I’m hugely impressed with the standard of all the games on show and the professionalism and passion of all the Dare to be Digital teams," said BAFTA judge Johnny Minkley.
“It was a hard choice for the judges, but all three BAFTA nominees are strong games and very different games. It will be a really tough decision for the judges to pick the final BAFTA winner at the Video Games Awards next March.”
Abertay's Louis Natanson added: "The entrants to Abertay University's Dare to be Digital get better and better every year, and all 15 teams have done something incredible - built a professional, playable and exciting game in just nine weeks.
"The BAFTA-nominated winners stood out from the tough competition for their exceptional game design, playability and commercial appeal, but all 15 teams have the experience now to enter the games industry or start their own businesses.
"We look forward to seeing, and playing, many successes from them in the future."

EA COO Peter Moore believes the company's income from digital downloads will soon overtake that from boxed games.

Moore insisted that boxed media will stick around for a while, saying "we will never abandon physical media. As long as the consumer wants to buy something on a disc, we will be there to offer it."

If you're lucky enough to find yourself at Gamescom next week in Germany, playable demos of Crysis 3 and SimCity will be headlining EA's lineup. Aside from those two, there will also be demo stations at EA's booth for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, FIFA 13, FIFA Manager 13, Medal of Honor: Warfighter andStar Wars: The Old Republic.
EA will also be conducting behind-closed-doors presentations. Notable titles for private showcase include the newly-announced Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel from Visceral Games, the Armored Kill expansion for Battlefield 3, Crysis 3, Dead Space 3, NHL 2013, Sims 3, SimCity and a bunch of mobile games from EA and Chillingo. We'll have previews of those games next week.

The NPD Group has released its monthly US retail report for July, confirming a year over year decline in spending for the eighth month in a row.
Total industry spending was down 20 per cent, coming in at $548.4m compared to $686.3m during July 2011.
NPD, seemingly prepping us for today’s results, released a report yesterday on digital sales suggesting the department saw a year over year growth of 17 per cent.
Hardware was down 32 per cent at $150.7m against $221.4m in July 2011. Xbox 360 claimed the peak position for the 19th month running moving 203,000 consoles, but sales across all hardware except for the 3DS saw a decline compared to the year before.
Accessories again were up (eight per cent) thanks to Activision’s Skylanders IP. Over 25m figures have been sold since October of last year.
Software sales were down 23 per cent, at $278.2m versus $338.5m during the same period a year prior.
NCAA Football 13 was the only July release to make the software charts, grabbing the top spot over last month’s winner Lego Batman 2. From the chart:

New IHS report forecasts explosion in gaming due to growth in connected TVs and free-to-play business model

Consumer spending on gaming through connected TVs is expected to hit $1.6 billion in 2016.
A new report from analyst firm IHS puts spending in the market at $88 million for this year, but the growing adoption of internet-enabled TVs and the proliferation of free-to-play games will trigger exponential revenue growth.
In 2016, his forecast that more than 800 million TVs will be able to access and pay for gaming content through internal technology, Blu-ray players or set-top boxes - the figure is currently 100 million.
"The sheer volume of addressable connected devices means this sector will be hard to ignore for content owners," said Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games research at IHS.
"There remain hurdles to overcome, of course, not least of which is user monetisation. However, IHS expects an acceleration in spending during the next five years as these hurdles are dismantled by leading industry players."
Gaming through Smart TVs has been forecast as a huge market for some time, but a lack of both hardware and compelling content services has stalled growth. IHS puts Samsung and LG ahead of the pack in terms of promoting games and other multimedia content for their hardware, while Sony's recent acquisition of Gaikai will have a fundamental impact on the sort of content it can offer in its TV business.
"Based on the quick evolution of previous digital games markets and the time it takes to develop the necessary relationships to get content published across devices, gaining first-mover advantage is likely to be key to the connected TV games sector."

Barnes & Noble's Nook Simple Touch was our top e-reader pick last year (back when we were still calling it the Nook WiFi). Since then, the device has been the happy recipient of a zippy software upgrade and a $40 price drop. This plucky little device has touchscreen functionality (with physical page turn buttons, to boot), great performance and one of the easiest-to-hold form factors in the biz. Granted, it's doesn't quite hit that sub-$80 price point, but this ad-free reader is the best you can get for less than $100.

Kobo eReader Touch Edition
Still Kobo's newest devoted e-reader, the Kobo Touch has also benefited from a healthy price drop since this time last year, now priced at $99 (or, like the Kindle, $79 for the ad-based version). Kobo's device isn't the most exciting reader on the market, certainly, but this touchscreen device gets the job done and has gotten a bit of a second life, thanks to Rakuten's acquisition of the company and its subsequent launch in Japan.

Barnes & Noble didn't change much with the latest version of its Nook e-reader -- and really, with the previous version of the device having nabbed the top spot on this list last year, there's not really a heck of a lot that needed changing. You've got a great form factor, smooth page turning and expandable memory to name but a few. Add to that the titular GlowLight functionality, and you've got a great e-reader that you can read in harsh sunlight or long after everyone else has gone to bed. Barnes & Noble also managed to pack that added functionality into a slightly lighter body.

Kindle Touch 3G
It ain't cheap, sure, but voracious readers will appreciate not having to live hotspot-to-hotspot. Anywhere AT&T's 3G signal reaches can become a virtual bookstore, offering up access to Amazon's excellent e-book library. At $189, this high-end reader is nearly the same price as the Kindle Fire, but with unlimited bandwidth for content downloads from Amazon, the Touch 3G is an excellent choice for frequent travelers.

Sony Reader WiFi
Looking for the sorts of extras standard e-readers just can't offer? Sony's WiFi reader has features galore, bringing music playback, dual-touch pinch-to-zoom and hand written note-taking. You also get a lending library and built-in access to Google Books. And at $130, it's fairly reasonably priced for such a full-featured reader.

Those looking for an e-reader that's more than just an e-reader needn't look any further than Barnes & Noble's offering. The Nook Tablet is probably more appropriately a low-end tablet with e-reading functionality, but at $200, it's not really a huge premium over many existing readers -- and you get a heck of a lot more, including sharp video, full color and access to Android apps. Of course, reading marathons on this 7-incher can be a lot harsher than on its e-ink counterparts.

For $200, you can also get your hands on Amazon's Kindle Fire. Of course, you're going to be losing out on a few key features here compared to e-ink readers, including the marathon battery life and outdoor readability. What you do get, however, is tablet functionality, via Amazon's custom UI, offering up access to one of the biggest content libraries on the planet.

Google Nexus 7
It may not have a major bookstore behind its name, but the Nexus 7 should be taken just as seriously as the competition. Kindle, Nook and even Kobo apps are all available for Android, and the device's stock OS means full access to Google Play, along with tablet settings. Not to mention the bounty of books and magazines available for download directly from Google.

Wii MMO sparks hardware resurgence as Nintendo dominates chart
Square-Enix's storied franchise Dragon Quest has dominated the Japanese chart with its first foray into MMO territory, despite the game seeing a significant drop in sales compared to other titles in the series.
Whilst X managed to shift 420,311 units in its opening week, quadrupling the number of Wii consoles sold in the process, the DS title DQ IX sold a huge 2,353,440 copies within two days of launch. Whilst the sales numbers aren't as impressive for X, the alternative revenue streams which it generates should prove profitable in the long-run.
Elsewhere in the chart, Nintendo dominate the upper echelons, taking eight of the top ten positions with three Wii and 3DS entries apiece and two for the vanilla DS. Sony take the remaining two with Digimon PSP in eighth and Persona 4 on PS3 at ten.

Three fully-fledged, profitable North American game stores for $3.5m?
That’s the deal being offered by Florida resident Shane Butcher, who has, in his words, put his “American dream” life up for sale on eBay.
For their money punters will receive three R U Game stores, both of Butcher’s homes, three cars, three kayaks and nearly all of his possessions.
The stores are all profitable and each will have one year of their lease paid in full upon the handover. Butcher will remain on hand for six months to mentor the new owner through the transition.
All of the current staff will also be remaining on board.
Other inclusions in the auction are arcade cabs, disc repair machines, the chain’s website, a 2006 Lotus Elise with just 13k on the clock, a waterfront condo and a 55” Sony Bravia LED TV.
And a hammock.
The games collection alone is certainly extensive, including the Starfox Super Weekend cartridge, Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn, a boxed Neo Geo, a SNES super scope in the box, “100s of other obscure video games and collectibles” and a sizable Blu-ray collection along with two Blu-ray players.
A non-refundable $10,000 “Good Faith Deposit” is required from the winning bidder upon completion of the auction.
"There's a lot of things we haven't seen or gotten to do while we've been working so hard to grow the business," Butcher told The Baltimore Sun. "We'd like to see the landmarks throughout the country, the Grand Canyon, stuff like that. We'll probably buy a camper and just travel for a while, go see some family."

It's just a matter of days until big German games show Gamescom - but it's proven to be plenty of time for Sega and THQ to have a change of heart about missing the event.
The two publishers, which had originally announced they would not be going to the show, have confirmed their games will be at there, showcased by distribution partners.
As Sega moves away from having a boxed product business and as THQ restructures, it made sense initially to sit the show out.
But clearly the two don't want to be left out.Momentum is such behind Gamescom - foreign companies exhibiting is up 40 per cent this year, with 600 companies in total from 40 countries and 14 national pavilions - that the few companies not going (specifically, Microsoft and Nintendo, are increasingly notable by their absence).
So those wanting to see the Sega and THQ games should go to the Koch Media and Saturn stands.
The news was confirmed yesterday by show organiser Koelnmesse, which also confirmed some serious expansion for the show, including an extra 15 per cent of exhibition space, and 300 game premieres for European gamers.
Organisers have also been heartily promoting the fact that, unlike E3, the show includes smartphone, F2P and online games amongst console and PC titles.
Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse said: “The innovative concept of Gamescom is convincing in some difficult market situations.
"Gamescom thus once again scores top marks and remains determined as it continues to grow."

Hackaday has seen a ton of builds make use of the Arduino CapSense library of late, so it was only a matter of time before we posted a capacitive sensing game controller that is able to move sprites around a screen.
For this build, the controller is made out of small strips of Aluminum foil, wired straight to an Arduino with a few resistors. Once embedded inside a wonderful enclosure that brings about pangs of nostalgia it’s time tow write the game.
For the game portion of the build, Processing was brought into the mix to create a SpongeBob-themed ‘capture all the jellyfish in jellyfish fields’ game. By taping the contacts for the d-pad, the player can move SpongeBob around to catch jellyfish. If you’d like to give the game a go, you can play it in your browser on the project page.
This isn’t the first – or the last – CapSense build we’ll see on Hackaday, but it is the first one dedicated to making a DIY (albeit Nintendo inspired) video game controller.
