NPD's retail report shows physical software and hardware way down
The NPD Group's retail sales data report for the US games business did not paint a pretty picture for the month of June. The double-digit declines keep mounting as total game industry sales fell 29 percent to $699.8 million, while software sales (including PC) also dipped 27 percent to $362.8 million. Accessories was the only category to tick up slightly (4 percent) to $169.8 million.
"These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories, which account for roughly 50-60% of the total consumer spend on games. When you consider our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales such as used and rentals at $170MM, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, mobile apps and the consumer spend on social network games at $491MM, we would estimate the total consumer spend in June to be $1.36B," NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier said.
"Our final assessment of the consumer spend on these areas outside of new physical retail sales will be reported in September in our Q2 Games Market Dynamics: U.S. report."
Frazier also noted that Nintendo's been doing very well with its 3DS, even better than the DS at the same point in its cycle.
"The 3DS is still up nearly 25% over where the NDS was in a similar point in time after release to market, and has topped portable hardware unit sales for the last 11 months. I am excited by the content that is coming to market later this year, and to watch what impact that will have on hardware sales," she said.
A light release schedule certainly didn't help the industry with its summer doldrums. The top selling games were Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (which sold 450,000 units across all platforms), Ghost Recon: Future Solider, Diablo III and Max Payne 3. Most analysts believe the industry will break out of its slump in the fall when a heavy slate of triple-A products are scheduled to hit stores.
As for why Batman came out on top, Frazier commented, "Batman may be on consumers' minds with Batman: Arkham City also ranking sixth, and with the latest movie, Dark Knight Rises, debuting later in July."
On software weakness overall she added: "In the first half of 2012, there were 34% less new software SKUs compared to last year. On an average SKU basis, they generated 4% less units, but 2% more dollars on average. This shows that while new launch performance is relatively stable, it is the sheer reduction in the number of launches that is contributing to the overall softness we are seeing in software so far in 2012. The decrease in new launch volume accounts for 41% of the net unit decline and 47% of the net dollar decline from first half of 2011."
Here are the top 10 games for June:

2.1m games were sold at retail last month – a drop of more than 40 per cent compared with June 2011.
In total, stores generated £48.4m from software sales throughout June, down 38.2 per cent from the £78.4m made during the same period last year.
The biggest new release of the month was LEGO Batman 2, which reached No.2 in the charts. However, the No.1 game was Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Future Solider, which came out in May.

COO next in line to take reigns at publisher, claims source
EA CEO John Riccitiello may be asked to step down some time after the July 30th earnings report, claims a confidential source.
He will be replaced by COO Peter Moore.
The rumor, reported by Game Front, comes a day after Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter told an audience at the Develop Conference in Brighton that Riccitiello "fears for his job".
Though Pachter later claimed he was kidding, this latest development is cause for consideration.
The source said the changes had yet to be finalized, and would still be put to a vote, but said it was clear there was growing concern over the company's falling stock price.

Develop Conference: 'I was very worried about the move to 3D', says Development Legend winner
Selling Earthworm Jim developer Shiny Entertainment to Interplay "was the worst decision I ever made", industry luminary David Perry has revealed.
Speaking at the Develop in Brighton conference, Perry said that allowing the publisher to acquire the studio was his biggest regret in his long and illustrious career.
He said that after Earthworm Jim 2, and with the onset of 3D games, he had concerns over the long-term viability of Shiny Entertainment as it was housed by pencil animators rather than 3D-trained developers.
"I was very worried, because I have a team with some of the best animators in the world, but they all use pencils," said Perry.
"But the games industry was going 3D. I was like, I’ve got this building full of pencil animators and there was no questions that the industry was going 3d.

It was probably the biggest game collection ever to be sold in a single Ebay auction.Thousands of titles were included, not least every single game for ever Sega console ever, and every single game for every Nintendo console until the Wii.Even the Virtual Boy.But, several days on, the anonymous French seller is still waiting for payment for the $1.32m (£788,120) collection, a private hobby that has taken him "around 15 years".His rarest treasure? "That'd be Go-Net for Megadrive, as less than 5 (maybe 3?) copies are known/identified on this planet," he told Eurogamer."But if I had to name the most expensive I had in my hands during those 15 years, that'd probably be each of the three Kizuna Encounter and the three Ultimate 11 NeoGeo AES European cartridges I had."I sold them for a ridiculously cheap price (which wasn't that cheap back at the time)... everybody makes mistakes!""I achieved my goals in this domain, having all the games ever made for my beloved systems."
A fraction of the games on offer.
Completing the collection of Nintendo and Sega retro titles has allowed him to now move on and put the project up for sale."I achieved my goals in this domain, having all the games ever made for my beloved systems. I'm a 8-16 bit fan. I do like 32-64 bit systems as well, but not as much as I have loved SFC/PCE/MD systems.""But the sale isn't done yet."Under UK law, when someone wins an auction or buys something outright, the sale forms a legally binding contract to purchase that item."For the moment the buyer hasn't paid yet," the seller concludes. "I can't say anything more about it until he pays."

Investors are big on the future of tablets in the mobile gaming space
At VentureBeat's MobileBeat/GamesBeat conferences today, investors said they believe tablets are the next big space for gaming in the next five years. Spark Capital venture partner Nabeel Hyatt led the charge for the form factor, stating that tablets solve a large problem in the smartphone market: discovery. He even went so far as to call the tablets the television of the next ten years.
"People say tablets have been overhyped, but I say they haven't been hyped enough," said Hyatt. "Developing for tablets is a relatively simple solution to the discovery problem. There are simply fewer games."
"You must have a solid distribution and discovery strategy," added Lightspeed Venture Partners Jeremy Liew.
Lazard Capital Markets senior equity research analyst Atul Bagga explained that tablet sales would far exceed those of PCs within the decade.

Will MS buy the house of Call of Duty?
[h=3]Activision Blizzard[/h]Headquartered in Santa Monica, California, Activision Blizzard, Inc. is a worldwide pure-play online...
www.activisionblizzard.com
[h=3]Vivendi[/h]
Vivendi chief executive Jean-Bernard Levy stepped down last month amidst growing concerns about the company's debt and flagging share price. One of the rumored ways that Vivendi could bolster its financial position is to sell off its 60 percent stake in video game behemoth Activision Blizzard, and today more fuel has been added to that fire, as Reuters has reported that Vivendi is now actively testing the waters.
"It's nothing official yet, but they've asked a bank to go and talk to possible buyers for Activision," said a source close to the Vivendi board, according to the report.
The idea is that by selling Activision Blizzard the French media conglomerate could raise about $10 billion. Those who may be interested include cash-rich firms like China's Tencent, media giant Time Warner, Microsoft, as well as private-equity heavyweights KKR, Providence and Blackstone, according to banking sources.
There already is an existing relationship between Tencent and Activision as the two recently announced a partnership to offer Call of Duty as a free-to-play online game in China. The report notes, however, that buying Activision outright may not make sense for Tencent and its very different business model.
"They have two big franchises, Call of Duty on the console side and World of Warcraft on the MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) side. And China is not a big market for console businesses; online games are much bigger for various reasons," said a banker.
Microsoft, on the other hand, may want to add some more blockbuster IP to its arsenal on Xbox, and making Call of Duty 100 percent Xbox exclusive is likely appealing, but the company may not want to invest so much when it's gearing up to launch a next-gen console in the next year or so.
"They probably don't want to distract themselves too much, but they are the ones who, if they want to stay in games, would think about owning some of these big franchises, not just providing the consoles," a banker source said.

While today's videogames are bigger, flashier and more impressive than ever, it's hard not to think that the golden era of console gaming is behind us. Back in the late '80s and early-to-mid '90s, when a new console came out every couple of years to cut its predecessors off at the knees and brutally savage the bank accounts of the hardcore gamer who had to have them all, there was genuine excitement. Now, with modern consoles showing their age and throwing on more and more gimmicks like so much makeup to compensate, it's hard to really get properly enthused about any of them. Out of nowhere came Ouya and, based on the $2.6 million it raised in 24 hours alone, it's safe to say it has succeeded in renewing that excitement. That's a stark contrast to the general feeling of malaise at this year's E3. I'm excited too -- but cautiously so.

[Jon] will be tapping away with his toes during gaming session thanks to this foot controller which is packed with buttons and sensors. It’s the second iteration of the build. The original had some solder joints break and the USB stopped working. He had also been experiencing some erratic behavior and so he decided to upgrade the control hardware and add a few more things in the process.
This version uses an Arduino Uno as the interface board. He did a bunch of prototyping to find the best way to hook up all the analog sensors, and how to properly debounce the buttons. Once he was happy with the inputs he set about finding a better way to use the USB HID standard with the device. We were surprised to hear that the ATmega16u2 (one of the new AVR chips which includes USB hardware) doesn’t play nicely with Linux. But [Jon] managed to hack his way around that issue and now he’s gaming with an even better foot controller than before.

If you’ve been playing with electronics for long enough, eventually you’ll need a nice remote control transmitter to control your RC car, airplane, or any other robotics project you have lying around. With these robotics projects comes the problem remote control, and the XBee Handheld Controller may be just the ticket to remotely control any project that comes off your workbench.
This isn’t the first remote controller we’ve seen that does just about everything, but it is the first one to include an XBee wireless transceiver to easily interface to your robotics project. The controller comes in two models, the Q4, which uses four Playstation-like joysticks, and the Q2, which uses proper remote control gimbal joysticks. Both the controllers have a slew of buttons, toggle switches, four rotary pots and a 2×20 LCD display.
After the break you can check out [Paul]‘s pitch explaining what these controllers can do and showing off a hexapod robot under the control of his Q4 controller. A very neat project, and we can’t wait to see this controller out in the field.

Develop Conference: 'The company that migrates these the best will be the most successful, says Eugene Evans
Migrating connected communities will decide who leads the next generation, says Bioware Mythic GM Eugene Evans.
The industry veteran, who has a long and colourful history in the business, said the importance of maintaining connected communities will be even greater in the transition to the next generation.
“The fascinating thing about all the current platforms is that they all have connected communities,” he said, speaking at the Develop Conference.
“I think the key to success will be how successfully they migrate those communities. The company that does that the best will be the most successful.”
Microsoft, Sony, Apple and Facebook each have game platforms and community services built around them. Those services are starting to appear on different platforms, but experiences vary.

In the run up to Christmas - yes, we are on our way there already - Currys and PC World have revealed their predicted top ten technology gifts for the holiday season.
Tablets of one sort or another dominate the list, with the new iPad, Google Nexus and Kindle Fire all expected to sell well. It's the third year in a row that iPad's been at the top, and no doubt other brands will be eyeing that position rather enviously.
While kitchen and homeware products may not be on many IT retailers' must-stock lists, it's still rather interesting to see a vacuum cleaner make an appearance. Is that what counts as a gift now? Ahem. On to the list:
Currys and PC World’s Christmas 2012 Top Ten Tech Gifts- 1) Apple New iPad (3rd generation), from £399.99
- 2) Kindle e-reader, from £89
- 3) Google Nexus 7 tablet, £199.99
- 4) Apple mystery product, £TBC
- 5) Krups, Dolce Gusto, from £89
- 6) Kindle Fire, £TBC
- 7) Goji Tinchy Stryder: On Cloud 9 Headphones, from £19.99
- 8) Dyson DC44 vacuum cleaner, price £TBC
- 9) Tefal Actifry, from £179
- 10) Nikon S13200 compact digital camera, £TBC
Mark Hosgood, category manager for e-readers and tablets, commented: “While it’s no surprise that the likes of the iPad and Kindle are going to be on everyone’s gift lists this year, we also think the tablet market as a whole could be a big winner. We are already selling three times as many tablet devices as we were this time last year, and I expect this number will continue to rise as we get closer to Christmas.
“Tablets have simply become one of the most popular gift options for customers. There’s much more of a variety on the market, the technology is miles more advanced, and the prices are coming down significantly so you’re always likely to find something suited to your budget. For example, you can pick up a decent tablet for as little as £79. The Google Nexus has already exceeded pre-order expectations in three days, and it’s clear that becoming a tablet owner is top of everyone’s Christmas wish list this year.”
TVs don't make the list - probably because they're a bit hard to fit under your average Christmas tree - but Currys and PC World are predicting big spends in this sector too over the holiday period.
What do you think is going to be big this year? Any difference of opinion with the list above? Are there any underdogs that could come through at the last minute to take the Christmas top spot?

The European Union has been accused to trying to slip key components of the ACTA agreement through covert channels.
According to the Independent, a number of controversial provisions contained within the Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement were also buried in a trade agreement between the EU and Canada called CETA.
Apparently, if the CETA treaty were ratified then lawmakers would not be able to fully object to ACTA.
“The European Parliament has spoken very loudly. To put back the same provisions in a much larger trade agreement will make it more difficult to reject. If CETA is successful, then one would think that the European Commission would come back and say ‘well, you just passed that, so you cannot object to ACTA’,” said Professor Michael Geist, the law scholar who discovered the hidden provisions.
Negotiated in secret and only made public after being leaked, ACTA was roundly rejected by the European Parliament after becoming the subject of widespread protests in Europe.
“The crowbarring of ACTA type provisions into CETA shows the will to ignore the democratic process,” said the head of the UK Pirate Party, Loz Kaye. “There are legitimate concerns about the enforcement, damages and border control obligations in CETA. The EU and international bodies must start to learn the lessons of the ACTA debacle, and truly engage with citizens.”

Legendary games designer Will Wright has claimed that the dramatic shift from full-price to freemium has left the established console sector is a state of disarray.
“I think all the console guys are running scared,” Wright toldGames Industry. “Not so much because of the hardware, but because of the business models, free-to-play and that kind of thing, have shifted underneath them.”
While Wright doesn’t necessarily subscribe to the idea that we’re facing the end of the console, but certainly the way in which games are being sold has radically transformed.
“I think publishers are much more risk-averse to spending twenty or thirty million dollars on a title,” he added. “The only people who could really play that game were giant publishers, and they'd be rolling the dice. They'd do five titles a year, and all they had to do was get one hit and it paid off all the failures.
“It is going to be more of a Zynga-type environment where people start small and try to grow it up. It encourages experimentation. I think before the only thing people were willing to bet on were sequels; that was really the only predictable genre.
“Now the fact that you can do a game for an extremely low cost, put it out there and see if it gets any traction is going to encourage more diversity.
Will Wright is most famous for creating Sim City, The Sims and Spore.

This Starcraft controller was designed as a contest entry. The goal of the contest was to provide a custom controller for the Starcraft Real-Time-Strategy game that shared some of the features seen in First Person Shooter controllers.
The design started as rough sketches. From the there button layout was prototyped before actually building a virtual model of the entire controller. A rendering of the model was submitted as a contest entry, and we’re glad it was also seen through to a physical device. This involved sending the design files off for 3D printing. What came back was painted and assembled to achieve the beautiful look seen above.
On the right is a stick that acts as the mouse controller. The buttons on the left are just the most necessary of Starcraft control keys. They all map to the appropriate keyboard keys and the device enumerates as an HID keyboard so no button mapping is necessary. That being said, a player does have the option of remapping if the layout doesn’t suit.

PEGI will assume sole control from the end of the month
July 30th is the day that the full-blooded new PEGI age ratings system for video games will go live in the UK.
Games released in the UK are currently rated by both PEGI and, if they contain mature content, the BBFC. PEGI will assume sole control from the end of the month.
Furthermore, PEGI ratings will also become legally enforceable for the first time, meaning retailers will be forced to observe the age restrictions when selling to minors, or else face prosecution.
“We welcome the news from government that July 30th is now looking the likely date for the implementation of PEGI as the single age rating system for video games in the UK,” UKIE CEO Jo Twist stated.

If you watched EVO streams over the weekend, chances are you walked away with a sudden and intense desire to play King of Fighters XIII. Hori's newest arcade stick ... is themed after a totally different game, but would totally work for KOF or really any fighting game. It would work great, of course, for the game it actually represents.
Hori is producing a Dead or Alive 5 stick using the same casing as itsSoulcalibur 5 stick, due alongside the game in September. It's available for both PS3 and Xbox, and features the "I'm a Fighter" slogan, which should be helpful in case you glance down at the device and happen to forget what you're supposed to be doing.
