Activision’s Call of Duty starts 2016 as it ended 2015: in the No.1 spot in the All Formats Top 40.
The title holds pole position, despite a 68 per cent drop in sales, ahead of soccer blockbuster FIFA 16.
EA’s football game climbed two places this week and reaches No.2. It’s just ahead of fellow EA title Star Wars Battlefront which is pushed one place to third position.
Grand Theft Auto V is STILL in the charts and rises one place over the course of the week, finishing at No.4 as Fallout 4 drops to fifth place with a 75 per cent drop in sales.
Meanwhile, new Tom Clancy shooter Rainbow Six: Siege holds fast at No.6 in spite of a 58 per cent drop in sales. Last week’s ninth place WWE 2K16 manages to rise up two places to No.7, too.
In tenth place is EA’s Battlefield 4. That title debuted in November 2013, and returns to the Top Ten due to a price promotion on the game which saw Argos selling it for £1.99 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Below is the software Top Ten for the week ending January 9th:
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Activision Blizzard
2. FIFA 16, EA
3. Star Wars Battlefront, EA
4. Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar
5. Fallout 4, Bethesda
6. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege, Ubisoft
7. WWE 2K16, 2K Games
8. Just Cause 3, Square Enix
9. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft
10. Battlefield 4, EA

January 11th, 2016, 21:29 Posted By: wraggster
Yesterday, Oculus VR finally announced the price of its first consumer virtual reality headset: $599, plus shipping. Fans reacted quickly, shocked that the price was twice as much as the original developer kit and furious that the company was charging so much. During Palmer Luckey's evening AMA on Reddit, fans were petitioning the company to remove the Rift's audio tech and packaged Xbox One controller to bring the price down. That's denial, anger and bargaining, guys. Let's skip the fourth stage of grief and jump to the end: acceptance. The Oculus Rift's launch price is completely normal.
I know you're upset, but think about it for a minute: New technology isalways expensive, often prohibitively so. Remember how much the original iPhone cost, back in 2007? It was priced at $600 with a two-year contract. The first-generation Kindle: a shocking $400, and it wasn't even a Paperwhite. Three years ago, a 55-inch 4K TV would have set you back $5,000 -- now better sets can be had for a little over a grand. That's the cycle: New technology enters the market at a premium price that drops with each subsequent generation. Today the lowest-end Kindle costs less than $80. Okay, a new iPhone will still cost you over $600, but at least you don't need to sign a contract anymore.
This logic can be hard to swallow in the face of Oculus VR's own release history. The original, Kickstarter-funded Rift development kit sold for a mere $300, and its higher-resolution follow-up only cost developers $350. Doesn't that break the model? Not really, so long as you have the proper context.
There's a vast difference between what was inside of those development units and what Oculus put into the final consumer Rift. This is going to get a little technical, but hear me out: The first two Rifts were built mostlyfrom off-the-shelf components and surplus smartphone screens. "These are devkits," Oculus founder Palmer Luckey told me in 2014, after launching the Rift's second developer unit. "Do not buy! Do not buy!" He calmed himself, assuring me that the DK2 was good but it wasn't good enough for consumers. "People don't have experience with this technology," he said. "When it arrives, it has to be good." Oculus VR had been selling developer kits at a loss, and were getting worried that the prototype's flaws would ward off cautious consumers. One of the reasonsthe company sold to Facebook was to make sure it had the resources to build a better Rift.

[Nick Touran] wanted to make two Raspberry Pi’s communicate wirelessly. There are lots of options, but [Nick] used a LASER and a photoresistor, along with Morse code. If you don’t find Morse code fancy enough, you could always refer to it as OOK (on/off keying). The circuit uses a common LASER module and an ordinary photoresistor that varies in resistance based on light. A resistor forms a voltage divider with the photoresistor and an external A/D reads the resulting voltage.
The circuit works, but we couldn’t help but notice a few items. Not all photoresistors are as sensitive to the same light wavelengths, so for the maximum range you’d want to pick a particular photoresistor. While the analog to digital converter is certainly workable, we couldn’t help but wonder if you couldn’t set up the divider to use the inherent threshold of the Raspberry Pi’s input pins for a simpler circuit. Of course, if you used the same technique with an Arduino, you could use the built-in A/D converter, and the A/D converter is probably easier to get working.https://hackaday.com/2015/12/12/rasp...ion-via-laser/

There’s no better way to learn how to program a computer than assembly, and there’s no better way to do assembly than with a bunch of blinkenlights and switches. Therefore, the best way to learn programming is with a PDP-11. It’s a shame these machines are locked up in museums and the garages of very cool people, but you can build your own PDP-11 with a Raspberry Pi and just a few extra components.
[jonatron] built his own simulated version of the PDP-11 with a lot of LEDs, a ton of switches, and a few 16-bit serial to parallel ICs. Of course the coolest part of any blinkenlight simulator are the front panel graphics, and here [jonatron] didn’t skimp. He put those switches and LEDs on a piece of laser cut acrylic with a handsome PDP11 decal. The software comes with a load of compiler warnings and doesn’t run anything except for very simple machine code programs. That’s really all you can do with a bunch of toggle switches and lights, though.
If this project looks familiar, your memory does not deceive you. The PiDP-8/I was an entry in this year’s Hackaday Prize and ended up being one of the top projects in the Best Product category. We ran into [Oscar], the creator of the PiDP-8, a few times this year. The most recent was at the Hackaday SuperConferece where he gave a talk. He’s currently working on a replica of the king of PDPs, the PDP-11/70.

December 16th, 2015, 22:52 Posted By: wraggster
Virtual reality is finally being released, but over half of UK games stores think that it is not going to take off in 2016.
55 per cent of shop managers believe that the new tech is not going to be a hit in 2016, with many saying that they predict it will be a fad akin to 3D television.
39 per cent of stores said they thought VR could take off, but only on the condition that the companies behind it like PlayStation, Oculus and HTC properly support the new tech and market it accordingly.
Meanwhile, five per cent told MCV that they simply weren't sure about how the new hardware will perform as it is such a new market.

Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all saw record revenue for their current-gen console hardware last month, NPD has reported.
Hardware sales for November 2015 reached $1.12bn. That's up 11 per cent compared to the same period last year, driven by a 14 per cent increase in console hardware revenue – which offset a significant drop in handheld sales.
"Growth was driven by console hardware, up 14 percent, which offset a 31 percent decline in portable hardware,” NPD's Liam Callahan stated. "November 2015 marked the best month ever in total unit sales for 8th generation consoles (Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U), surpassing sales of December 2014 (now second-highest), and November 2014 (now third-highest)."
"Within console hardware sales there were dramatic differences by console generation as 8th generation console sales rose by 22 percent in dollars, 7th generation sales dropped by 76 percent in dollars, which is sharper than the year-to-date decline of 57 percent. In November 2015, 8th generation sales had 93 percent share of overall hardware sales, a 9 percentage point increase from last November."
PS4 and Xbox One sales continue to outpace their predecessors as well.
“After 25 months, the combined sales for the PS4 and the XBO are 47 percent higher than the combined sales for 25 months of PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware sales,” Callahand added.
The same couldn't be said about retail software sales, which fell 7 per cent during the month despite the release of Star Wars Battlefront and a new Call of Duty offering.
"New physical software sales decreased by 7 percent as portable software sales drop 66 percent with console software sales down a modest 1 percent,” Callahan said. “Within consoles, 8th generation software sales increased by 37 percent, and largely offset the decrease in spending for 7th generation consoles, which decreased by 60 percent.”
Overall, US sales hit $2.47bn during the stretch – a 2 per cent increase versus November 2014.

December 16th, 2015, 22:48 Posted By: wraggster
One week remains until the UK's Christmas No.1 is decided and Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III is once again the top dog in the UK All Formats chart.
The shooter rose despite a 37 per cent decline in sales this week. Star Wars Battlefront climbs to one place to No.2 as we get closer to the release of The Force Awakens this coming Thursday.
Last week’s No.1 FiFA 16 drops to third place as sales decline 49 per cent. EA’s football title is still a strong contender for the Christmas No.1 – the charts for the week ending December 19th. FIFA games currently hold the records for most Christmas No.1s, currently laying claim to eight.
Fallout 4 drops one place to No.4 with a 21 per cent sales dip, while Minecraft: Story Mode rises two places to fifth position.
Just Cause 3, which debuted at No.4 last week, falls to sixth place with a not-too-shabby 43 per cent sales decline. Meanwhile, Rainbow Six: Siege falls three positions to No.9.
The only new entry in the charts this week is EA’s The Sims 4: Get Together at No.38.
Below is the software Top Ten for the week ending December 12th:
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Activision Blizzard
2. Star Wars Battlefront, EA
3. FIFA 16, EA
4. Fallout 4, Bethesda
5. Minecraft: Story Mode, Telltale
6. Just Cause 3, Square Enix
7. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft
8. Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar
9. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege, Ubisoft
10. WWE 2K16, 2K Games

December 16th, 2015, 22:46 Posted By: wraggster
It’s that time of the year again when MCV - and our competitors - start talking about who will be the Christmas No.1.
Every 12 months we try, and fail, to get people to care.
Sure, seeing the bookies make ridiculous odds on which game will make the top spot always makes entertaining reading (oh how we love to laugh at the uninitiated). But we all know that the Christmas No.1 every year will either be FIFA or Call of Duty - depending on which one has an offer on at GAME.
And it doesn’t even matter. It’s not as if the games industry floods the market with festive-themed charity products in the days before Christmas Day (even in the music industry, it’s become a monotonous battle between the X-Factor single and whatever track social media has decided to pit against it). It’s not even the biggest sales week of the year. The real winner of Q4 is the one that emerged triumphant from Black Friday (it was FIFA 16, by the way).
This year, however, it does matter. At least for one game: Star Wars Battlefront.
Let us be clear, despite what GameStop seems to think, Battlefront has not been a failure. It has sold extremely well. In the UK, Battlefront has already left the year’s other big sellers - The Witcher III and Batman: Arkham Knight - in the dust. Just Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III and stablemate FIFA 16 lie ahead of it, and it’s closing in on Fallout.
It’s also the most successful Star Wars game launch ever. And if you remember the ill-informed hype that surrounded 2008's The Force Unleashed, you’ll know that’s a pretty good thing.
But it all comes down to expectation. And when you consider the not-so-hushed whispers that Star Wars might actually topple Call of Duty this year, you can understand some of the negative reports.
I directly asked EA if the game could be the biggest launch of the year back at E3. EA COO Peter Moore, aware of my ever-so-slightly-leading question, said that those were my words. But followed it with: “I can’t think of a game right now, and I am biased obviously, that has more buzz and anticipation.”
It wasn’t the biggest launch of the year. And if anyone was under any illusion that Star Wars could defeat Call of Duty this year, let’s put that to rest: it won’t. Black Ops III’s sales are already more than double that achieved by Battlefront.
Were we expecting too much? That is what Peter Moore suggested when responding to GameStop’s claim that Battlefront had ‘failed to hit’ their reduced expectations. And indeed, it seems GameStop were not the only ones over-estimating the Star Wars effect.
In the past month, MCV has been told by three different companies in the toy industry that their Star Wars lines have ‘performed below estimates’. Maybe the world of business was so caught up on Star Wars hype, they didn’t consider that the toys and books and games wouldn’t start selling until the movie came out.
Moore’s words in response to GameStop suggests that EA weren’t so naive. They were expecting a longer-tail seller, particularly around the launch of the movie. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which is out in a matter of days, will be the No.1 film in cinemas for months and months, and EA will feel confident that it has a game to ride that wave of consumer excitement.
And that movie's release coincides with the exact same week that the video game Christmas No.1 will be decided. And this is why this year, for a change, whoever emerges as the festive frontrunner, does matter.
At least for one game.

Pokemon and Tekken crossover Pokken Tournament now has a release date in Japan.
The Wii U brawler will arrive on March 18th. One can hopefully presume that a Western release will follow not too long after that. It is currently scheduled simply for ‘spring’.
Also announced is a Wii U hardware bundle. As well as the game and console, it also includes an Amiibo card and, more excitingly, a special arcade controller designed to ape the arcade version. You can see a picture of it below. It’s made by Hori, no less.
Note that the game will also support the GamePad, Wii u Pro Controller and Wii Classic Controller for those without the custom hardware.

A big question has followed Oculus around since its Rift unveil back in June: How will it persuade the public that virtual reality is ready for primetime? Today we have the answer: Oculus VR has announced that Eve: Valkyrie, CCP's multiplayer dogfighting shooter, will be a pack-in with every pre-order of its upcoming VR headset when it launches in early 2016.
Aaron Souppouris, Senior Editor
"We want to be the Halo or Mario for the [PlayStation VR] and Oculus." That's what Valkyrie executive producer Owen O'Brien told me back when I previewed the game in April. Today's news made his wish come true. While more recent platforms have launched without them, traditionally pack-in games were common. And they've been especially important for establishing new concepts or accessories, with many going on to become iconic titles. Nintendo used this trick often: think Game Boy and Tetris, SNES and Super Mario World, or the Wii andWii Sports. Oculus clearly believes Valkyrie is the right title to imbue the qualities of VR to the masses.
CCP, the game's developer, made its fortune from the Eve:Online space MMO, but in recent years subscriber numbers haven't been moving in the right direction, and it's laid off a lot of staff. As well as trying to spark interest in its MMO through frequent updates, it's poured money into virtual reality development, hoping to get into the field early to make the money it needs to survive. We probably should've seen the pack-in coming -- Oculus is publishing Valkyrie, after all -- but the fact that everyone with a Rift on launch day will get the game is still huge news for CCP.The jury's still out on whether Valkyrie is the best game to showcase VR for first-timers.
While CCP's gamble has been vindicated, the jury's still out on whetherValkyrie is the best game to showcase VR for first-timers. Here's the problem: I'm not the best person to judge its success. I've played a healthy amount of VR over the past three years, during which I've played Valkyriein its alpha and beta stages. My thoughts on the game are not going to be a great analog for a "first timer." My colleague Nathan Ingraham, however, approached the game with fresh eyes.

In a race that fuses video-game technology and real world driving skill, two professional drivers, on two separate but identical tracks, have raced against each other — effectively blind — while wearing virtual reality headsets attached to their crash helmets. The drivers hurtled around the circuit in two identical 2015 V8 Ford Mustangs, trusting that what they were seeing on their Oculus Rift DK2 VR headsets was a true, real-time representation of how their cars were performing on the actual track. One of the main challenges: tracking the cars' exact positions as they sped around the track without the need for re-calibration. This was necessary so that an exact match could be achieved between what was happening on the physical track and its representation on the VR screens.

There's little question that VR and AR technologies have the potential to make a major impact across a seemingly endless number of applications and industries. Google has teamed up with VISA and Bank of America to sponsor a 360 degree virtual reality tour to give football fans a behind the scenes look at a New England Patriots practice. From burly linemen squaring up, to wide receivers running their routes, and of course the terrific one himself, Tom Brady; in this 360 VR video demo you can take control of the camera and pan around from any angle to see how the Pats put it all together. You can view this video in a standard web browser but if you have a Google Cardboard VR viewer, pop in your Android or iOS device and get in on the pigskin party just looking around naturally.

The new Raspberry Pi Zero is generating a lot of discussion, especially along the lines of “why didn’t they include…?” One specific complaint has been that audio is only available through the HDMI port. That’s not entirely true as pointed out by Lady Ada over at Adafruit.
Something to remember about the entire Pi family is the pins on the Broadcom processors are multipurpose. Does it increase the confusion or the capabilities? Take your pick. But the key benefit is that different pins can handle the same purpose. For audio the Greater Than Zero Pis (GTZPi) use PWM0_OUT and PWM1_OUT on the processor’s GPIO pins 40 and 45. On the GRZPis these feed a diode, resistor and capacitor network that ends at the audio output jack. They don’t appear on the GPIO connector so cannot be used on the Zero.
The multi-pin, multi-purpose capability of the Broadcom processor allows you to switch PWM0_OUT to GPIO 18 and PWM1_OUT to GPIO 13 or 19. Add the network from the Adafruit note, or check this schematic from the Raspberry Pi site – look at the lower right on the second page.

[Alex@Raspi.tv] had the misfortune of blowing the USB hub and Ethernet port on a Raspberry Pi B+. He thought about using a cheap SPI to Ethernet board to rescue it, and while he bought the board, he never got around to interfacing it to the broken Pi. However, when he saw the Raspberry Pi Zero arrive and noticed that everyone wanted to connect it to the network, he remembered the SPI board, rescued it from his junk box, and a few hours later had Ethernet via Raspberry Pi GPIO working.

UK sales of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were almost neck-and-neck over Black Friday week, retailers report.
139k PS4 consoles were sold in the UK between 22nd and 28th November, UK shops told MCV.
134k Xbox Ones were sold over the same timeframe - a narrow loss for Microsoft's machine.
Altogether, 300k consoles were shifted in total - a figure which leaves around 42k spare for Wii U, handhelds and older consoles.
Black Friday shows no signs of going anywhere - news which may or may not fill you with happiness, depending on how much the whole thing appeals.
More consoles were sold over the Black Friday weekend this year than over the same seven days in 2014.
Game sales soared by 60 per cent week on week, while retailers raked in 32 per cent more money.

This article criticizes the Raspberry PI Foundation's new computer the Zero. It points out that the Foundation says the purpose of the new Pi is to reach students but with all the needed equipment and experience it is ill suited for students. From the Hackaday story: "For development you need to set up the Zero with a power supply, mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter, HDMI cable, the USB OTG cable, USB hub, a keyboard, and possibly a mouse. After some hours of work you’re ready to try the software in your device. The cables are all disconnected and the board connected to the device. Tests are run. You pull the Zero out and plug everything back together for further software work. That’s going to get old really fast so you get a second Zero so one can stay in the device. Now all you need to do is swap the SD card. If you’re going to do that, you don’t need a second Zero since you can use a Pi 2 and get the advantages of its higher speed in development. Alternatively, you can use the USB OTG with a WiFi dongle, copy files to the Zero’s SD, and restart or reboot the device. Over WiFi you can also use SSH or a remote console to monitor the device’s activities. How long did it take you to figure out all the cable connections in the second paragraph above? Do you think a student without a hacker friend will understand that? Remember, the goal is to reach students who don’t know computers."

A geophone is a specially built microphone for listening to the Earth. [JTAdams] found them at a reasonable price so bought some to play with. A geophone is used to detect vibrations from earthquakes, explosions, rumbling trucks, and vibroseis vehicles. To be useful it needs an amplifier and a recording device to capture the signals.
[JTAdams] used a standard amplifier design for an LT1677 op-amp, fed the signal to an MCP3008 A/D converter, and read the output using a Raspberry Pi. A Python script records the data to a CSV file for processing. The Pi worked well because the entire setup needs to be portable to take into the field. Another Python script plots the data which is made available from a web page. A neat simple way of presenting the raw data. [JTAdams] promises more information in the future on post-processing the data. You don’t need a geophone to detect seismic waves if you build your own, but a real ‘phone will be more rugged.
Oh, what’s a vibroseis? It’s a truck with a big flat plate underneath it. The plate is hydraulically lowered to the ground until the weight of the truck is on it. The truck then causes the plate to vibrate, usually sweeping from around 10 hz to 100 hz. This infrasound pass through the ground until it is reflected back by underlying rock layers. A long string of geophones, think 1,000s of feet, detects the waves, which are recorded. In practice, many trucks are used to generate a synchronized signal of sufficient strength. Or, you can set off an explosion which is the technique used in water. Typically the information is used for oil and gas exploration. A video of one of the trucks in action after the break.
