There has been a lot of excitement around virtual reality within the PC industry for some time now, but until the first consumer headsets launch, it's hard to tell if they will be a true success.
But according to the latest IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) survey, 51 per cent of respondents say that virtual reality and augmented reality is the future of gaming.
Open-source gaming (21 per cent), which allows the user to customize their game play and formatting because the game’s source codes are publically available, and second-screen gaming/smart glasses (18 per cent) rounded out the top three “next big innovation for gaming” responses from participants.
“There is no doubt that VR/AR will be the most important innovation of the next gaming generation” said Dr Todd Richmond, member of the IEEE and Director of advanced prototypes at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies.
“Game developers are already starting to embrace AR/VR and blended reality. There is no doubt that these immersive technologies will be the most important innovation of the next gaming generation, and will also impact every other aspect of our lives.
"The gaming industry will be an early adopter and help figure out how the technology is viable. By 2017, AR/VR/blended reality technologies will be easily and affordably brought into consumer homes thanks largely to video games.”
With several products in development by major developers like Sony’s Project Morpheus, and theOculus Rift VR headset scheduled for release as early as 2016, the technology is on its way.
Dixons Carphone has already told PCR it plans to stock VR devices, while analysts expect 14 million units to be sold next year.
However, some industry experts have labelled virtual reality a fad, while other retailers have told PCR they are cautious and hopeful that it doesn't spark another huge online price war.
Time will tell if virtual reality will truly take off, but there's no doubting there's a special kind of excitement and expectation around this particular technology that arguably wasn't the case with the likes of wearables and 3D TVs.

Zenimax's lawsuit against Oculus VR and its parent company Facebook will move forward, after separate motions to dismiss by the latter two firms were denied. Polygon reports Facebook's motion to dismiss due to a number of “errors” in Zenimax's allegations was shut down by US District Court judge Jorge A. Solis. Oculus had a similar motion dismissed by Solis last month. Solis indicates the lawsuit will move forward because the complaints have to do with whether Zenimax's allegations are true – which is meant to be settled in court – not whether they're grounds for a lawsuit. A preliminary jury trial date has been set for August 1st, 2016 for the case. ZeniMax sued Oculus in May of last year, alleging that the VR company misappropriated trade secrets in the development of the Oculus Rift. http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/faceb...orward/0154132

Google is reportedly rolling out a new version of its Google Glass to a range of businesses.
Some of the businesses who can expect to receive the new head-mounted device include those within the health care, manufacturing and energy industries.
The new addition also allegedly features a different design to its predecessor, including a rectangular frame and a button-and-hinge system that will allow the mini computer to attach to different glasses.
According to The Wall Street Journal, a new consumer version of the glasses is expected to launch in a year’s time.
However, reports have said Google doesn’t have any plans to officially release the newer version, and is instead offering the device to software developers creating programs to use the glasses in business environments.
This news comes after Google revealed it will be halting the production of Google Glass earlier this year.
The firm stated that it had plans to launch a more affordable version at a later date.
The original version of Google Glass was sold for $1,500 (£962), but was criticised due to security issues.

Four weeks after it first claimed the top spot, LEGO Jurassic Park is back to No.1 in the UK All Formats Top 40.
It manages this thanks in spite of a 14 per cent dip in sales week-on-week. Last week’s top dog, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour falls to fourth place thanks to a 46 per cent sales decline.
And Batman: Arkham Knight rises on place to No.2 with an eight per cent dip in sales.
Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto V rises up two positions to third place with sales shooting up 23 per cent. This is thanks to a sales promotion on the PlayStation 4 and Grand Theft Auto V hardware bundle.
Rockstar’s crime title wasn’t the only game to benefit from PS4 hardware promotions. God of War III Remastered, Bloodborne and The Order 1886 all saw sales increases this week, rising 79 per cent, 148 per cent and 406 per cent sales jumps respectively.
Price promotions helped a number of other games this week – FIFA 15 sales rose 90 per cent, while The Elder Scrolls Online increased 89 per cent week-on-week. Meanwhile, Battlefield Hardline saw a 148 per cent sales jump.
Below is the All Formats software Top Ten:
1. LEGO Jurassic World (Warner Bros)
2. Batman: Arkham Knight (Warner Bros)
3. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
4. Rory McIlroy PGA Tour (EA)
5. FIFA 15 (EA)
6. The Elder Scrolls Online (Bethesda)
7. Battlefield Hardline (EA)
8. F1 2015 (Codemasters/Bandai Namco)

Four new releases in the Japanese software Top Ten last week wasn’t enough to dethrone continued phenomenon and chart success Yokai Watch.
The Busters spin-off of the massively popular franchise was number one for a third consecutive week, shifting over 118,500 units.
That was despite new competition from Capcom’s Sengoku Basara 4 expansion title Sumeragi, the PS3 and PS4 versions of which debuted in second and third, respectively.
A new Vita game, Makaishin Trillion, also managed to crack the Top Ten, slotting into sixth position.
A fourth and final new release, the pithily-titled TV Anime Idol Master Cinderella Girls G4U! Pack Vol. 3, closed out the Top Ten rankings.
Titles to vanish from the Top Ten last week included Phoenix Wright title Dai Ace Attorney: Naruhodo Ryunosuke no Boken, Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition and Mario Kart 8.
Both Splatoon and Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ managed to climb spaces – but with the sales of both titles falling week-on-week, this is likely more due to the lack of high-selling competition.
Meanwhile, last week’s number two, Batman Arkham Knight, fell seven spaces in its second week, down to ninth.
The game had led Sony’s PS4 to be the best-selling hardware in the region last week, but it was once again usurped by Nintendo’s New 3DS XL, which reclaimed its place at the top of the charts.
Similarly, Wii U was knocked back below handheld competitor PlayStation Vita, as the charm of Wii U title Yoshi’s Woolly World, which debuted the previous week, wore off. The Vita was the third-best-selling console of the week.
Here is the software Top Ten for the week ending July 26, according to the latest Famitsu data:
- Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Akaneko-dan / Shiroinu-tai (Level 5) 3DS – 118,534
- Sengoku Basara 4: Sumeragi (Capcom) PS3 – 46,291 (New)
- Sengoku Basara 4: Sumeragi (Capcom) PS4 – 24,848 (New)
- Splatoon (Nintendo) Wii U – 22,800
- Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (Nintendo) 3DS – 16,721
- Makaishin Trillion (Compile Heart) Vita – 16,687 (New)
- Yoshi's Woolly World (Nintendo) Wii U – 14,227
- Fire Emblem Fates: White Kingdom / Black Kingdom (Nintendo) 3DS – 14,219
- Batman Arkham Knight (Warner Bros) PS4 – 14,037
- TV Anime Idol Master Cinderella Girls G4U! Pack Vol. 3 (Bandai Namco) PS3 – 12,801 (New)
And here are the weekly hardware rankings:
- New Nintendo 3DS XL – 19,850
- PS4 – 15,256
- PS Vita – 12,184
- Wii U – 11,421
- New Nintendo 3DS – 4,610
- PS3 – 2,379
- Nintendo 3DS – 911
- Nintendo 3DS XL – 837

Sony has revealed some impressive PS4 sales numbers for its most recent financial quarter.
PS4 sold 3m units in the three months ending June 30th, representing 11 per cent year-on-year growth. Perhaps more importantly, that number is more than double the 1.4m combined sales of Xbox One and Xbox 360 in the same period.
Sony has also upped its PS4 sales forecast for the current financial year from 16m to 16.5m units.
In total some 25.3m PS4 consoles have now been shipped worldwide. Microsoft’s most recent shipped figure for Xbox One was 10m back in November 2014.
Sony’s Q1 results showed 12.1 per cent sales growth for its Game & Network Services division, with sales reaching ¥288.6bn. Operating income grew by ¥15bn to ¥19.5bn.
Sony’s overall sales and operating revenue was flat at ¥1,808.1bn. Operating income was up 38.8 per cent ¥96.9bn.

Rory McIlroy has done the double, staying at the top of the charts for a second week – making it the very first golf game to do so in the UK.
Rory McIlory PGA Tour – the first title in the franchise without the name of former box star Tiger Woods – retained its number one spot despite sales more than halving (down 56 per cent).
That’s partly thanks to a complete absence of new releases in the Top 40 last week, leading the existing players to move around.
LEGO Jurassic World climbs two places to second place, dropping eight per cent, while fellow Warner Bros release Batman Arkham Knight continues to hang in third, sales down almost a third (28 per cent) week-on-week.
Meanwhile, F1 2015 dropped back to number four as sales more than halve (down 55 per cent). The racing title is closely followed by chart staple Grand Theft Auto V, which has seen sales rise consistently for the last three weeks – it was up eight per cent last week.
Last week’s second place title God of War III: Remastered fell out of the Top Ten, down six spots to sit at number 15 as sales sell 37 per cent.
Although there were no completely new entries in the Top 40, Trials Fusion: The Awesome Max Edition managed to break into the Top 40 after debuting outside of the rankings last week, climbing to number 37 on the back of a 70 per cent increase in sales.
Here is the UK software retail chart for the week ending July 25th, according to GfK Chart-Track and UKIE:
- Rory McIlory PGA Tour
- LEGO Jurassic World
- Batman Arkham Knight
- F1 2015
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
- Minecraft: Xbox Edition
- Minecraft: PlayStation Edition
- The Elder Scrolls Online
- FIFA 15

Google's decision to 'graduate' Glass from Google X in January was coupled with the announcement that the team would start reporting to Nest co-founder Tony Fadell. Glass was never a roaring success -- privacy concerns and the "Glasshole" label scuppered public adoption -- so some wondered whether the iPod designer had been saddled with the project. Apparently not so. In aBBC interview, Fadell has clarified that he actively asked for the role. "It wasn't handed to me and said, 'Tony, clean it up,'" he explained. "I offered and said, 'this is important.' I remember what it was like when we did the iPod and the iPhone. I think this can be that important, but it's going to take time to get it right."

Japanese PlayStation 4 sales shot up this week as Batman: Arkham Knight launched in the country.
That’s according to Famitsu market data that shows that sales of Sony’s latest hardware rose 73 per cent week-on-week.
Batman: Arkham Knight debuted in second place, shifting 48,330 units in its first week on shelves. This is likely due to the fact that Sony had a marketing deal in place for Warner's most recent Batman title. And, of course, Xbox One sales in the region haven't exactly been stellar.
But it wasn’t the best-selling game of the week – that title goes to the latest entries in the continually popular Yo-Kai Watch series, Akaneko-dan/Shiroinu-tai, which sold 224,268 units between them.
Sales of the 3DS phenomena dipped 67 per cent week-on-week, down from its impressive Week One sales of 688,386 units.
New 3DS XL sales also dipped this week, declining seven per cent, as the hardware falls to second place.
Wii U sales rose this week on the back of Yoshi’s Woolly World hitting stores. That title debuted in third place, shifting 33,821 units, while Wii U hardware sales rose 11 per cent.
Below is the software chart for the period between July 13th and July 19th:
1. Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Akaneko-dan/Shiroinu-tai (Level 5) 3DS – 224,268
2. Batman: Arkham Knight (Warner Bros) PS4 - 48,330 New
3. Yoshi's Woolly World (Nintendo) Wii U– 33,821 New
4. Dai Ace Attorney: Naruhodo Ryunosuke no Boken (Capcom) 3DS – 23,326
5. Splatoon (Nintendo) Wii U – 23,080
6. Fire Emblem Fates: White Kingdom/Black Kingdom (Nintendo) 3DS – 22,158
7. Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (Nintendo) 3DS – 20,465
8. Taiko Drum Master: V Version (Bandai Namco) Vita – 12,511
9. Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (Sony) Vita – 9,263
10. Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo) Wii U - 8,127
And here are the hardware charts:
1. PS4, 22,380
2. New Nintendo 3DS LL, 19,939
3. Wii U, 12,204

Researchers think that they've worked out why certain men abuse women over the internet: because they suck... at games. According to a study by Michael Kasumovic and Jeff Kuznekoff, the most vocal abusers of women online are the ones most threatened by their presence in the digital sphere. The short explanation for this is because less-skilled men have the most to lose playing games against a woman, thanks to the perceived social stigma of "losing to a girl." Rather than risk this supposed humiliation, they'd much rather create a toxic environment that's outright hostile to newcomers.

Dixons Carphone has revealed its PC gaming plans to PCR.
The Currys/PC World and Carphone Warehouse owner hasn't traditionally placed a big focus on this sector, but with gaming on the up, it confirmed it will be stocking more 'sophisticated' PC gaming systems in a number of its stores going forwards - as well as virtual reality devices.
The company opened its 'Gaming Bunker' in London two years ago, a specialist Currys/PC World store that lets customers play games and try out the latest accessories.
When asked how that has gone and what the future holds for Dixons Carphone in this space, chief executive Sebastian James told PCR: "The bunker is surprisingly good fun. It smells quite strongly of boys but it’s been quite good. We’re not going to roll that out anywhere, it needs to be very high footfall, it needs to be really central urban districts. But it’s been quite good for us.
"We’ve sold a lot of PC gaming accessories which are quite expensive and offer quite good margin for us, but they’re highly specialized.
"We will have some stores in which we will go for some of these more sophisticated gaming machines, but it is quite specialist and they are very expensive."
While Dixons Carphone said at the moment it won't be stocking any Steam Machines, which launch this November, it did identify virtual reality as a key emerging sector that it's working hard on.
Andrew Harrison, deputy group CEO at Dixons Carphone, added: "I think the interesting direction and the thing we’re quite excited about in the long term is virtual reality/augmented reality.
"From the things we’ve seen at the events we’ve got to go on, and some of the products available, you need very high-powered computers in order to do that. You need setup capabilities and a room to be able to do it in, and you need peripherals. People are going to need to come to physical retail places and explore what’s on offer.
"I think it’s quite exciting. I think it’s going to be one of the bigger trends over the coming years and we’re working quite hard on that in terms of how we bring that to consumers."
The execs were talking to the press following Dixons Carphone's first full-year trading results which were announced late last week.

With all of the cool features on the Raspberry Pi, it is somewhat notable that it lacks a power button. In a simple setup, the only way to cut power to the tiny computer is to physically remove the power cord. [Dalton63841] found that this was below his wife’s tolerance level for electronics, and built a simple remote control for his Raspberry Pi.
[Dalton63841] started this project by trying to use the UART TX pin, but this turned out to be a dead-end. He decided instead to use an Arduino to monitor the 3.3V power rail on the Pi. When the Pi is shut down in software, the Arduino can sense that the Pi isn’t on any more and disconnect the power. The remote control is used to turn the Pi on. The Arduino reads the IR code from a remote and simply powers up the Pi. This is a very simple and elegant solution that requires absolutely no software to be installed on the Raspberry Pi.
We know that this isn’t the most technically complex project we’ve ever featured, but it is a good beginner project for anyone just getting started with a Pi, Arduino, or using IR. Plus, this could be the perfect thing to pair up with abattery-backup Raspberry Pi shutdown device that allows it to power itself down in a controlled way when a power outage is sensed.

July 19th, 2015, 00:12 Posted By: wraggster
FlightAware is the premier site for live, real-time tracking of aircraft around the world, and for the last year or so, Raspberry Pi owners have been contributing to the FlightAware network by detecting aircraft flying overhead and sending that data to the FlightAware servers.
Until now, these volunteers have used Raspis and software defined radio modules to listen in on ADS-B messages transmitted from aircraft. With FlightAware’s new update to PiAware, their Raspberry Pi flight tracking software,Mode S transponders can also be detected and added to the FlightAware network.
Last year, FlightAware announced anyone with a Raspberry Pi, a software defined radio module, and an Internet connection would earn a free FlightAware enterprise account for listening to ADS-B transmitters flying overhead and sending that information to the FlightAware servers. ADS-B is a relatively new requirement for aviators that transmits the plane’s identification, GPS coordinates, altitude, and speed to controllers and anyone else who would like to know who’s flying overhead.
Mode S transponders, on the other hand, are older technology that simply transmits the call sign of an aircraft. There’s no GPS information or altitude information transmitted, but through some clever multilateration in the new PiAware release these transponders and planes can now be tracked.
To get the location of these transponders, at least three other PiAware boxes must receive a signal from a Mode S transponder. These signals, along with a timestamp of when they were received are then sent to the FlightAware servers where the location of a transponder can be determined.
The end result of this update is that FlightAware can now track twice as many aircraft around the world, all with a simple software update. It’s one of the most successful applications of crowdsourced software defined radio modules, and if you’d like to get in on the action, the FlightAware team put together a bulk order of ADS-B antennas.
