[Matthew's] recent blog post does a good job explaining the basics of the Raspberry Pi’s file system. The Linux operating system installed on a Pi is generally installed on two different partitions on an SD card. The first partition is a small FAT partition. All of the files on this partition are used for the initial booting of the Pi. This partition also includes the kernel images. The second partition is the root file system and is generally formatted as ext4. This partition contains the rest of the operating system, user files, installed programs, etc.
With that in mind you can deduce that in order to backup your Pi, all you really need to do is backup all of these files. [Matt] has written some scripts to make this a piece of cake (or pie). The first script will simply copy all of the files into a gzipped archive. You can save this to an external SD card, USB drive, or network share.
The second script is perhaps more interesting. This script requires that you have one free USB port and a USB SD card reader. The script will automatically format the extra SD card to contain the two critical partitions. It will then copy the “boot” files to the new boot partition and the root file system files to the new SD card’s root partition. When all is said and done, you will end up with an SD card that is an exact copy of your current running file system.
This can be very handy if you have multiple Pi’s that you want to run the same software, such as in a Pi cluster. Another good example is if you have spent a lot of time tweaking your Pi installation and you want to make a copy for a friend. Of course there are many ways to skin this cat, but it’s always fun to see something custom-built by a creative hacker.

A six month journey of blood sweat and tears is finally over for [David Carver] and what he is left with is nothing short of beautiful. He calls it the PirateCade. We call it the perfect arcade cabinet.
This project is actually [David's] very first Raspberry Pi project – at least it was, until his Pi crapped out on him. After running into too many problems with it and SD card corruptions, [David] decided against the RetroPie project platform and decided to upgrade to a full-blown PC, using an AtomicFE front-end and the Ultimark Ipac.
The entire cabinet is hand made out of solid wood; he didn’t have access to any fancy CNC routers or laser cutters. We gotta hand it to him, he’s quite the cabinet maker for an electronics guy.

Over the last 20 years, [Martin] has been recording snowboarding runs with a standard helmet cam. It was good but he felt like he could improve upon the design by building his own version and logging additional data values like speed, temperature, altitude, and GPS. In the video shown after the break, a first person perspective is displayed with a GPS overlay documenting the paths that were taken through the snow. [Martin] accomplished this by using a python module called picamera to start the video capture and writing the location to a data file. He then modified the program to read the current frame number and sync GPS points to an exact position in the video. MEncoder is used to join the images together into one media file.
The original design was based on the Raspberry Pi GPS Car Dash Cam [Martin] developed a few months earlier. The code in this helmet cam utilizes many of the same functions surrounding the gathering of GPS data points, recording video, and generating the overlay. What made this project different though were the challenges involved. For example, a camera inside a car rarely has to deal with extreme drops in temperature or the wet weather conditions of a snowy mountain. The outside of the vehicle may get battered from the snow, but the camera remains relatively safe from exposure. In order to test the Raspberry Pi before venturing into the cold, [Martin] stuck the computer in the freezer to see what would happen. Luckily it worked perfectly.
Click past the break for the rest of the story.

Still not too sure how to house your awesome Raspberry Pi B model? Don’t worry, [Timothy Giles] has got you covered! He’s just finished this very sleek open source PIvena case for anyone to use.
Why is it called the PIvena? He’s basing it off of [Bunnie's] Novena project which is a hobby-based open source laptop! For more information you can checkout the recent interview we had with [Bunnie] himself!
Anyway, back to the hack — it features a laser cut case which has plenty of room for the Pi and any additional hardware you want to add. Like the Novena, the screen also functions as a lid, opening up to reveal the electronics, allowing for easy tinkering. All the files can be acquired over at Thingiverse, and he has assembly instructions available on Instructables.

Hardware and software revenues surge over first eight months, but "lack of truly compelling content" hurts tie ratios
[h=3]The NPD Group[/h]
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launches were gangbusters from a hardware standpoint in Canada, but not quite as impressive on the software side of things. That's according to NPD Canada director of technology and entertainment Darrel Ryce, who assessed the systems' launch performances in a post on the NPD blog.
Eight months out from the launches, Ryce said "console sales in Canada have never been stronger." The PS4 and Xbox One systems outsold their predecessors by 127 percent, and software sales similarly doubled over previous launches, up 102 percent overall. Accessory sales were also up, although by a more modest 29 percent.
The downside to those numbers is that the growth in software hasn't kept up with the surge in hardware, which means the ratio of games sold per console has decreased. Ryce said Canadians have purchased approximately three games per Xbox One or PS4 sold, down about 11 percent from the numbers the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 managed in their launch periods. Ryce acknowledged that digital content is growing in importance, but said "the lack of truly compelling content at this time in either digital or physical format is what's at play." Ryce expects that situation to have sorted itself out by the holidays, as the first big wave of anticipated post-launch titles hit shelves.
"There remains more opportunity for this market, and with the announced titles planned for release over the next six months, it seems likely that the market will build off this early growth momentum," Ryce said. "There are potential areas of growth, including increasing the tie ratio between games and consoles, which will improve as platform libraries (games) grow, and accessory sales, which will depend on a myriad of factors, including the continued push towards new market opportunities (e.g., toy-based games). "

[StrangeMeadowlark] decided one day to create this badass Arduino-based gaming controller. Not for any particular reason, other than, why the heck not?!
It looks like a tiny Lego spaceship that has flown in from a nearby planet, zooming directly into the hands of an eager Earthling gamer. With buttons of silver, this device can play Portal 1 and 2, Garry’s Mod, Minecraft, and VisualBoy Advance. Although more work is still needed, the controller does the job; especially when playing Pokemon. It feels like a Gameboy interface, with a customizable outer frame.
Sticky, blue-tack holds a few wires in place. And, most of the materials are items that were found around the house. Like the gamepad buttons on top; they are ordinary tactile switches that can be extracted from simple electronics. And the Legos, which provide an easy way to build out the body console, rather than having to track down a 3D printer and learning AutoCAD.

Another 332,000 sold for Level-5's RPG as handheld titles dominate
Youkia Watch 2 continued its dominance in the Japanese software chart last week, selling another 332,000 units.
Level-5's 3DS role-playing game sold 1.3 million units last week, and while its second week was inevitably lower it still proved more popular than the vast majority of games on their debuts.
It was a week that reinforced the dominance of handheld gaming in Japan, with four of the top five and eight of the top ten all on 3DS or PlayStation Vita. Indeed, second, third and fourth places were all new handheld releases: Sony's Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines with 93,000 sales, Gust's Atelier Shallie with 43,000, and Bandai Namco's Gundam Try Age SP with 21,000.
Here's the software top ten:
- [3DS] Youkai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke (Level-5, 07/10/14) - 331,946 (1,648,653 - lifetime sales)
- [PSV] Oreshika: Tainted Bloodblines (SCEJ, 07/17/14) - 93,775 (New)
- [PS3] Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea (Gust, 07/17/14) - 43,744 (New)
- [3DS] Gundam Try Age SP (Bandai Namco, 07/17/14) - 21,524 (New)
- [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo, 05/29/14) - 14,992 (542,358)

- [PSV] Freedom Wars (SCEJ, 06/26/14) - 9,761 (262,427)
- [3DS] Taiko Drum Master: Don and Katsu's Space-Time Great Adventure (Bandai Namco, 06/26/14) - 9,258 (101,478)
- [3DS] Pokemon Art Academy (Nintendo, 06/19/14) - 5,714 (69,636)
- [PS3] Watch Dogs (Ubisoft, 06/26/14) - 5,628 (59,585)
And the hardware chart
- 3DS LL - 31,192 (55,531 - prior week sales)

Another week without a console release saw the UK's charts remain largely unchanged again, with Ubisoft holding on to the top spot with Watch Dogs.
A few titles leapfrogged up the chart, including GTA V, the 360 SKU of Minecraft and the LEGO Movie game, but there were no new entries to ruffle any feathers.

The Raspberry Pi Model B+ was just released, and now everyone who picks one of those up has a few more GPIO pins to play around with. For the millions of people with the two-year-old version of the Pi, we’re still stuck with the same old, same old: 17 GPIOs on the big header, and that’s about it as far as toggling pins goes.
The Broadcom SoC on the Pi has far more GPIO pins than are broken out on the large header, and a few of those go to the CSI camera interface. These GPIOs can be broken out with a few flat cables (Portuguese, Google Translatrix), giving you four more GPIOs, and this technique can also be used with the new, expanded Model B+.
The CSI camera connector has two I²C lines that go directly to the camera, controllable in Linux as GPIO0 and GPIO1. There are two more GPIO connectors on the CSI connector controllable as GPIO5 and GPIO21. By carefully slicing and soldering wires to a flat cable, these GPIO lines can be broken out onto a breadboard.
There’s a video below demonstrating these GPIO lines being used to control a few LEDs. Of course, anything that is possible with a normal Raspi GPIO is possible with the CSI connector GPIO lines.

For [Tony]‘s entry for The Hackaday Prize, he’s doing something we’ve all seen before – a head mounted display, connected to a Bluetooth module, displaying information from a smartphone. What we haven’t seen before is a cheap version of this tech, and a version of Google Glass that folds – you know, like every other pair of glasses on the planet – edges this project over from ‘interesting’ to ‘nearly practical’.For the display, [Tony] is using a 0.96″ OLED connected to an Arduino Nano. This screen is directed into the wearer’s eye with a series of optics that, along with every other part of the frame, was 3D printed on a Solidoodle 2. The frame itself not only folds along the temples, but also along the bridge, making this HMD surprisingly compact when folded up.
Everything displayed on this head mounted display is controlled by either an Android phone or a Bluetooth connection to a desktop. Using relatively simple display means [Tony] is limited to text and extremely simple graphics, but this is more than enough for some very interesting applications; reading SMS messages and checking email is easy, and doesn’t overpower the ‘duino.

A new UK campaign aimed at stemming the piracy of games, films and music will allow internet service providers to warn alleged persistent offenders about their actions, but will not result in any legal action.
The scheme, known as Voluntary Copyright Alert Programme, will launch in spring 2015. ISPs will be able to send up to four warnings a year to users believed to be infringing copyright, explaining to them that their actions are unlawful, and offering legitimate sources of entertainment.
But for those who ignore the messages, no action will be taken.
ISPs to have signed up to the initiative include BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. The Government has pledged £3.5m in funding to an education campaign to raise awareness on piracy.
Vcap is the result of years of negotiations between entertainment companies and ISPs. Many film, games and music firms had hoped for much stricter and robust action for persistent offenders, including powers to cut internet access, as well as access to information on such offenders.
The UK’s creative industries are said to contribute as much as £71.4 billion towards the UK economy, supporting 1.71 million jobs. In games alone, there is believed to be more than 620 games studios, with 18,093 jobs directly supported by the sector.
The actual effects of illegal downloads on games businesses and other creative sectors is widely debated. While many state it directly affects sales, others also claim those who illegally download content would likely not have purchased it in the first place.
In November last year, Sports Interactive head Miles Jacobson revealed at the London Games Conference that Football Manager 2013 had been illegally downloaded 10.1 million times. He also stated that sales dropped significantly after the game was cracked.
Jacobson estimated that piracy had cost the studio 176,000 in lost sales.
According to a TIGA survey in October last year, only ten per cent believed that stricter enforcement of intellectual property rights was the solution to illegal downloading and file-sharing. 73 per cent also disagreed with cutting off internet connections to persistent offenders who ignored warnings.
More than half the respondents however, 57 per cent, reported that piracy had a direct impact on their business, and had also been unsuccessful in their own attempts to reduce it.

A robot called Tiddlybot - powered by the Raspberry Pi mini-computer - has been designed to help children learn about robotics.
Bristol-based designers Agilic have secured almost $30,000 in funding on the Tiddlybot Kickstarter page, meeting its initial $27,000 funding target.
The Tiddlybot robot can draw, follow lines, output a live wireless video feed and be controlled from a web interface, from a smartphone, tablet or any other PC with a browser. As well as drawing lines, it can even be programmed to 'freestyle' and demonstrate autonomous behaviour.
The Kickstarter campaign seeks to fund research into the many ways the Tiddlybot, and other Raspberry Pi bots, can be adapted and applied to enhance the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
To purchase a build-your-own version, pledgers are asked for $44, or $37 to just own the interface.
'Tiddles', as the company affectionately refers to it, comes in a range of colours as well as a version made from sustainable plywood.
"In a time where learning to learn has never been more relevant, the Tiddlybot encourages development of such learning skills as problem solving, programming and the basics of robotics; something which the next generation will need to understand in the way that the current children of the '70s and '80s embraced computers," said the team in a statement.
"The driving force behind its creation was empowering our future generations with some of the fundamentals of programming, whilst supporting the learning of Python and Javascript for more advanced students."
Tiddlybot's spokesperson Harry Gee added: "We've been working hard to create something to engage and empower the next generation of engineers, programmers and scientists and we think Tiddlybot is fantastic at focusing all types of learners."
