10 years ago today, in the wake of two disappointing Star Wars prequels, we discussed whether Episode III could salvage itself or the series. Now, as production is underway on Episode VII under the care of Disney, I was wondering the same thing: can it return Star Wars to its former glory? On one hand, many critics of the prequels have gotten what they wanted — George Lucas has a reduced role in the production ofEpisode VII. Critically, he didn't write the screenplay, which goes a long way toward avoiding the incredibly awkward dialogue of the prequels. On the other hand, they're actively breaking with the expanded universe canon, and the series is now under the stewardship of J.J. Abrams. His treatment of the Star Trek reboot garnered lots of praise and lots of criticism — but his directorial style is arguably more suited to Star Wars anyway. What do you think? What can they do with Episode VII to put the series back on track?

Things were unusually uneventful on the UK software chart this week, with seven non-movers hanging onto their places. Sadly for Titanfall was not one of those, and the UK number one is now FIFA 14.
Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition was a new entry at 3, and its a testament to the brand that its closely followed at 4 by Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition which hasn't fallen outside the top ten this year.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe was another new entry at 16.

The CEO of Atari has shared his plans for the company as it emerges from bankruptcy, stating that he'd like to see it getting into the hardware business again.
Atari filed for bankruptcy in January 2013. In December that year, itreceived court approval to enact a three-year plan that would see it emerge from bankruptcy.
<figure style='background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); font: 14px/23.79px "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; margin: 0.45em 0px 20px 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; width: 230px; color: rgb(38, 38, 38); text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; float: right; display: block; white-space: normal; position: relative; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;' class="responsive single-article__canvas single-article__canvas--big single-article__canvas--offset zoomhover" title="" data-media992="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_2965/image_296505_320.jpg" data-media768="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_2965/image_296505_320.jpg" data-media480="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_2965/image_296505_480.jpg" data-media="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_2965/image_296505_320.jpg"></figure>Now, five months later, Atari CEO Frederic Chesnais has toldGamesBeat the plan is going well so far.
"Today, we have a company that is out of bankruptcy, and we are ten people working under the studio-production model," he said. "We pay attention to three things: the IP, the production, and the distribution."
Chesnais also explained his vision for the company going forward, stating that Atari is "more than a software brand, it's a hardware brand".
However, he stressed that this did not mean Atari is planning to make a new console. "I'm not talking about a new console but, like, a watch. A gamified watch. It's not what we are going to do, but think about [something like] that. Like a new type of watch is something we 'could do.' A watch, branded, where you don't have an 'ordinary' watch.
"It's a generational brand. It's a lifestyle brand. You could never do that with a brand like THQ. I mean, back in the heydays, THQ was never a lifestyle brand."
As another example of a possible future Atari product, Chesnais offered: "You have a jacket. We have a plug-in so you can power your iPhone or Android. You have a solar chip on your shoulder so that you never run out of batteries.
"Things like this. Would you buy an Atari watch? Would you buy an Atari Jacket that you could plug and repower your iPhone or whatever device you are using? I think you would."

With the Raspberry Pi now most famously known as a $30 media PC, it only makes sense that the best uses for the GPIO pins on the Pi are used for an Ambilight.on using the Pi as a uniquely configurable Ambilight with Hyperion and just about any video input imaginable.
This isn’t the first Ambilight clone [Great Scott] has put together, but for the Ambilight functioned only under Raspbian and not any random HDMI input. The new version solves this by using an HDMI splitter box, feeding into an HDMI to composite converter, and finally into a USB composite capture dongle attached to the Raspi.
With the software in the instructions, the Raspi effectively mirrors the video coming from the video capture dongle. The Pi is running Hyperion to control a strip of WS2801 RGB LEDs, making the back of any TV glowey and blinkey.
Since [Great Scott] is using a component video signal as an input, the adapters necessary to have any device work with this Ambilight are readily available. We’d honestly like to see this build working with the old Commodore disk access screen border going nuts, so be sure to send that in if you ever get that working.

Recruitment drive continues at VR firm
Oculus has hired Google Glass lead electrical engineer Adrian Wong.
Wong had worked at Google for three and a half years on both the consumer edition and “explorer” version of the web giant’s wearable tech.
It is not yet clear what his specific role at Oculus will be. His Linked profile describes his job as “building the Metaverse”.
Oculus has been busy building up its team in recent months, during which the virtual reality firm was acquired by Facebook for $2bn. Recent hires include ex-343 Industries art director Kenneth Scott and former Valve devsAaron Nicholls, Atman Binstock and Michael Abrash.
Last year Oculus also appointed id Software’s John Carmack as CTO. He subsequently left the Doom developer in November last year to concentrate fully on VR at Oculus.

The PS4 outsold the Xbox One in the US in April, NPD reported. This was the fourth month in a row that PS4 sales out-performed Xbox One sales. Xbox One was the second-highest-selling piece of gaming hardware on the market for the month, and total hardware sales were up 76 percent, to $192.8 million.
Microsoft reported Xbox One sales of 115,000 in April. Microsoft noted that it led software sales for the month: "April NPD Group figures released today showed that Xbox One continues to lead in software sales with the most cumulative units sold for any eighth generation home console platform life-to-date. Combined, Xbox One and Xbox 360 held eight of the top 10 spots on the generation eight and generation seven console game lists in the US." In April, Xbox One sold 447,000 games, while Xbox 360 sold 2.2 million games.
Software sales overall were down 10 percent year-over-year. NPD analyst Liam Callahan said, "New physical software is in a transition period as software for new consoles are doing well, but collectively not offsetting declines."
Titanfall was the No. 1 game for the second month in a row, followed by Call of Duty: Ghosts, NBA 2K14 and Minecraft for Xbox 360. See the full software top ten below.
According to Callahan: "There were five SKU's in the top 10 not represented in the top 10 when ranked on a title basis (combination of SKUs across platforms), which were: 3DS Yoshi's New Island; PS4 Infamous: Second Son; PS3 MLB 14: The Show; XBO Kinect Sports Rivals; 360 Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare."

Titanfall is the UK No.1 for the second month in a row.
Data from GfK Chart-Track reveals that the EA shooter was bolstered by the
launch of an Xbox 360 SKU, which accounted for the majority of Titanfall’s sales during April.
The game was part of a bumper month for EA, which also had the second best-selling game of the period – FIFA 14.
In total, the publisher had four games in the UK Top Ten, including 2014 FIFA World Cup at No.6 and Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare at No.10.
But it was a relatively slow Easter for games retail. Just 1.48m games were sold last month, a drop of 6.2 per cent compared with April 2013. In total, £40m was made from game sales, which is actually a slight increase over the same period last year.
But a lack of new releases on the schedule is definitely harming the market potential right now.
There were only two new games in the Top Ten, the aforementioned World Cup tie-in and LEGO The Hobbit at No.4.

An estimated 34m individuals in the US average 22 hours of gaming each week, new research from NPD Group states.
Game Informer reports on the figure, which doesn't take into account mobile gaming hours – though 66 per cent of those polled claimed to play mobile devices.
The survey also claims that nearly 70 per cent of those polled in the research company's “core gamer survey” play multiplayer games regularly or occasionally, and 74 per cent of those surveyed prefer physical media over digital – though that figure is down 5 per cent from 2013's poll.
NPD polled 7,927 people in the US, age nine and above who play at least five hours per week on a PC or console and at least one traditional game – which include action, adventure, fighting, flight, MMO, racing, RTS, RPG, shooter, and sport genres.

A new ‘smart strap’ is offering watch wearers the chance to turn their standard wristwatch into a tech-equipped timepiece.
The Modillian replaces the strap of a standard mechanical watch, adding a clasp with integrated Bluetooth for pairing with Android smartphones.
The augmented fastening can then inform the wearer of incoming calls, texts, messages and reminders by vibrating.
The creators behind the Modillian, industrial engineer Eran Reuveni and electronics engineer Gilead Kirschenbaum, state that the module will last up to a week on a single charge, and highlight its ease of use, voicing their desire to target the market for premium leather watch straps.
The device is said to be past the design phase and will generate funding for a production run in a crowdfunding campaign set to launch on June 10th.

The next version of Google Glass is rumoured to already be in the early stages of development.
While there are no reports on specs or pricing,laoyaoba.com has reported that Crystal Optech is supplying small quantities of optical coatings for a ‘second-generation Google Glass’.
Yesterday (May 13th), Google decided to open Glass sales up to everyone in the US in a 24-hour sale.
Costing $1,500, Google has today put the ‘explorer edition’ back on general sale.
While consumers try to get their hands on to a pair before Google runs out of stock, other tech firms are planning to compete with Glass by releasing their own smartglasses.
Samsung is currently developing Galaxy Glass, which is rumoured to debut at the IFA trade show in Berlin in September.
Last year we reported on the ION Glasses, which aim to compete with Google on price and simplicity.

Core gamer demand for digital distribution still rising, up 5 percent year-over-year
[h=3]The NPD Group[/h]
Digital distribution is becoming an increasingly accepted way of buying games, but the clear majority of gamers still prefer to get something tangible for their money. According to the NPD Group's Core Gaming 2014 report, 74 percent of core gamers in the US would choose a physical copy of a game over digital, assuming both were the same price.
Despite the preference for physical formats, acceptance of digital games is growing. The 26 percent of gamers who said they preferred digital copies of games is up 5 percent year-over-year.
The report comes from a survey of more than 7,900 core gamers ages 9 and up conducted in March. The research firm defined "core gamer" as anyone who plays five hours or more on Microsoft or Sony consoles, PC, or Mac, and plays in certain genres (action, adventure, fighting, flight, MMOs, racing, real-time strategy, RPGs, shooters, or sports games) on those platforms.
The NPD Group put the total US core gamer audience at 34 million people, with the average player spending 22 hours a week on games. Two-thirds of them also played games on mobile devices, and 70 percent played multiplayer games at least occasionally.
"Core gamers are really the lifeblood of the industry, spending tremendous amounts of time on their hobby of choice," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. "With the new console generation off to a great start, we can expect the amount of time spent gaming to increase as more core gamers adopt them."

So, not every indie developer abandoned Oculus VR after the Facebook take-over. 3D video expert Oliver Kreylos is one of those who stuck around, and we're mighty glad he did. Check out his three-way-Kinect-plus-Rift setup in the video below and you'll be glad too -- even if the second video, showing the wearer's POV (and intended solely for other Rift owners) makes you retch a couple of times. Video feeds from the three Kinects are merged to create a relatively solid 3D rendition of Kreylos as he moves about inside a VR environment. The merged feed is then sent to the Oculus so that he can look around at everything inside that environment, including his own body. Kreylos says that even though his limbs were a bit fuzzy during the experiment, due to the relatively low resolution of the cameras, the system's low latency allowed his brain to believe that the body parts really belonged to him, to the point where it felt natural to try to reach out and touch non-existent objects. And bear in mind: All of this was achieved using first-gen Kinects, rather than the much more powerful version that is (usually) supplied with the Xbox One, so there's already plenty of scope for improvement.

3DS dominated Japanese software and hardware sales during the week ended May 11.
Titles for Nintendo's handheld occupied nine of the top ten software chart places and 14 of the top 20, according to data from retail monitor Media Create, which was republished on NeoGAF.
Weekly 3DS hardware sales actually declined, although the system managed to extend its lead over Vita as Sony's system suffered a bigger drop-off.

[Frank] knows how important backups are for data security, but his old method of plugging a hard drive in to take manual backups every so often is not the most reliable or secure way of backing up data. He realized he was going to need a secure, automated solution. He didn’t need a full-sized computer with a ton of power; why waste electricity for something so simple? His solution was to use a Raspberry Pi as the backup computer.
The main problem he faced with the Pi was finding a way to make it rack mountable. [Frank] started with an empty 1U server case. He then had to bend a few metal plates in order to securely mount the backup drive into the case. A couple of small rubber pads help dampen any vibrations caused by the hard drive.
The computer power supply was able to put out the 12V needed for the hard disk, but not the 5V required to run the Pi. [Frank's] solution was to use an LM2596 based switching supply to turn the 12V into 5V. He soldered the power supply wires directly to the Pi, thinking that a USB plug might vibrate loose over time. Mounting the Pi to the computer case should have been the trickiest part but [Frank] made it easy by simply gluing the Pi’s plastic case to the inside of the computer case. When all was said in done, the backup server pulls 29W under full load, 9W with the disk spinning, and only about 2W in an idle state.
On the software side of things, [Frank's] backup box uses bash shell scripts to get the job done. The Pi connects to his main server via VPN and then the bash scripts use rsync to actually collect the files. The system not only saves backups every night, but also keeps week old backups just in case. If you are really paranoid about your backups, try hooking up a custom battery backup solution to your Pi. If a Pi just isn’t doing it for you, you can always try one of many other methods.

Have you ever wanted to relax with a good book but couldn’t due to the hassle of having to actually read and turn pages? Well, now BrickPi offers 2 solutions to that problem. They have you covered regardless if your document is on a tablet or resides in a physical book.
The original Bookreader will read out loud the displayed text on a tablet. This is not an application that runs on the tablet, it is a completely separate device that ‘reads’ the tablet screen. As you could guess from the BrickPi name, the brains behind the operation is a Raspberry Pi. A camera takes a photograph of the displayed text and the Raspberry Pi converts that image file to text using Optical Character Recognition. A Text-to-Speech engine then speaks the text in a robotic sounding voice. In order to change the page the Raspberry Pi controls a Lego Mindstorms arm that swipes across the tablet screen and the entire process is repeated.

Electronic Arts has confirmed dozens of games that will be losing online functionality with the impending shutdown of GameSpy's hosted services. The publisher said Friday it has been evaluating options to preserve those features, but hasn't come up with a solution as of yet.
The affected games include a wide selection of Wii and DS games (both systems built their online services around GameSpy technology), and about two dozen PC titles. While this is the end of the line for most of these games' online communities, a select few may yet be preserved.
"We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games," the publisher said in a statement. "We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don't have anything to announce."
GameSpy has said it would be shutting down all of its hosted services effective May 31. However, EA is telling consumers that its GameSpy-powered titles would lose their functionality on June 30. A full list of affected games is available on EA's official site.

Google Glass may not be permanently available for sale to the general public, but Mountain View recently promised to find new ways to expand the Explorer program. The pricey gadget's first stop? The Player's Championship in Florida, a golf tournament where many participants can easily afford the device's $1,500 price tag. Despite the prime location, Google still bundled the eyewear with a free mini-camera that clamps onto a golf club to sweeten the deal. Sounds like the company's plan worked quite well: according to Twitter user Richard Ranick, a sales associate claimed sales were much better than expected. Since Google has vowed to make Explorers not just out of sports lovers, but also out of optometrists, cooks and travelers, we might see more Glass booths (after the break) at various events in the future.

It's hard to imagine getting bored on a roller coaster, but a pair of English gents figured out a way to make riding the rails even more thrilling: adding VR to the mix. The duo took a publicly available model of an undisclosed UK theme park's coaster, and imported it into the Unity game development suite. From there, the two smuggled a laptop, mouse, power supply, camera and an Oculus RIft past park security. After getting into the car and outside the unblinking gaze of the ride's cameras, out came the VR headset. The idea of the experiment was to test real-life physical feedback synced with a virtual experience, sans a fancy home-built setup.
