A Sony patent has revealed details for a sensor that measures the changing chemical make-up of your saliva.
The miniature sensor would fit behind your two front teeth and detect the levels of enzymes and hormones which can indicate your emotional state, the patent (dug up byNeoGAF) explains. The documents were published today via the US Patent Office but were filed back in October 2012 by Dr. Ozlem Kalinli-Akbacak, a research engineer at SCEA."Emotion recognition or understanding the mood of the user is important and beneficial for many applications; including games, man-machine interface etc.," the patent states. "Emotion recognition is a challenging task due to the nature of the complexity of human emotion; hence automatic emotion recognition accuracy is very low."This new system would use a suite of sensors all over a user's body - such as a finger-based ring that could detect your heart rate, blood pressure and respiration (similar to Nintendo's abandoned Wii Vitality Sensor concept).A head-based sensor "band/cap" would measure brain activity and stimulation, while another part of the patent mentions sensors embedded within a PlayStation controller - an idea Sony is rumoured to have explored and then ditched for the final PS4 pad.All of this data would then be transmitted to a "computer system" to gauge a user's physical reactions.Despite today's publication it's unclear whether Sony still intends to do anything with the idea. The project doesn't appear to be connected to the company's newly-announced Project Morpheus VR tech, however.

Titanfall developer Respawn has detailed a map in its upcoming DLC expansion Expedition.Titled War Games, the upcoming map is one of three new levels coming in this DLC pack, priced at $9.99 (about £6) and included as part of the Season Pass.War Games is set a militia-training simulated environment that encompasses three distinct sections: Angel City, Rise and Airbase Sierra. "When brainstorming ideas for the first Titanfall DLC map pack, the concept of a level in the training mission simulator got a lot of people excited. Designers imagined a level that was smooth, clean and abstract - a perfect place to design easy-to-read battle spaces and wallrun paths," explained level designer Jason McCord in a new blog post. "The concept maintained throughout development was 'parkour playground.'""War Games is one of our most wallrunning friendly maps with a fun visual hook and plenty of space for Titans to engage in large scale battles," he added.McCord also noted that certain parts of the map will be "glitching out" to indicate that this is taking place in a virtual world. The sleek aesthetic is also designed to make other players stand out more against the backdrops. "On the outskirts of the level, paintball style fields are designed clutter-free to make enemies easy to spot and paths easy to discern," McCord stated.

The Raspberry Pi has been around for a while now, and while many boards that hope to take the Pi’s place at the top of the single board ARM Linux food chain, not one has yet succeeded. Finally, there may be a true contender to the throne. It’s called the HummingBoard, and packs a surprising amount of power and connectivity into the same size and shape as the venerable Raspberry Pi.
The HummingBoard uses a Freescale i.MX6 quad core processor running at 1GHz with a Vivante GC2000 GPU. There’s 2GB of RAM, microSD card slot, mSATA connector, Gigabit Ethernet, a BCM4329 WiFi and Bluetooth module, a real-time clock, and IR receiver. There’s also all the usual Raspberry Pi flair, with a 26 pin GPIO connector, CSI camera connector, DSI LCD connector, stereo out, as well as the usual HDMI and analog video.
The company behind the HummingBoard, SolidRun, hasn’t put a retail price on the board, nor have they set a launch date. You can, however, enter a contest to win a HummingBoard with the deadline this Friday. Winners will be announced in early May, so maybe the HummingBoard will be officially launched sometime around then.
It’s an amazing board with more than enough power to rival the extremely powerful BeagleBone Black, with the added bonus of being compatible with so many of those Raspberry Pi accessories we all love dearly.

Digital games spending in the US saw a significant year-on-year increase last month, analyst firm Superdata has announced.
Superdata's March 2014 report reveals the US digital games market brought in $936m in sales during the period, up 9 per cent from March 2013.
The report points not to social and mobile offerings, but rather hardcore titles for the upswing. Games such as Titanfall and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft are reestablishing the industry's focus on traditional core gamers, and digital is quickly becoming the preferred distribution method for consumers.
The research firm added that social and mobile platforms are beginning to “soften and saturate,” and indicated little faith in the below-industry standard conversion rates for Zynga in particular.
Superdata also specifically laid out data on Candy Crush Saga publisher King. The company noted a 1.2 per cent increase in spending compared to February; but also a 2 per cent drop in social players and a mobile user base that showed no growth during the period.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV debuted at No.2 in this week's Japanese chart, the latest Famitsu data reveals.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn sold over 39,000 units, but fell short of 3DS exclusive Youkai Watch, which topped the chart with 49,000 sales.
Published by Professor Layton maker LevelFive, Youkai Watch launched in Japan in July 2013. But the popularity of the Youkai Watch anime TV show has fuelled resurgentsales. Having sold 28,000 units last week, sales of the title this week almost doubled to over 49,000.
Both Bandai Namco and Nintendo continued their successful runs in the Japanese chart as the two publishers accounted for six of the Top Ten best-selling games. And it was a strong debut for Capcom’s Ace Attorney 123: Phoenix Wright Selection, which debuted at No.3.
The PS Vita defended its crown as the best-selling console in Japan this week as it sold over 17,000 units. It snuck past the 3DS LL's 16,703 units, which forced Nintendo's handheld into the No.2 spot for a second consecutive week.
However, if sales of the 3DS LL and vanilla 3DS are combined, Nintendo’s handheld remains the top-selling console in the country. Elsewhere, the PS4 placed third in the hardware chart and well ahead of the fourth place PS3.
Here's the Top Ten for the week ending April 20th:
1. Youkai Watch (LevelFive) 3DS – 49,146
2. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Square Enix) PS4 – 34,279
3. Ace Attorney 123: Phoenix Wright Selection (Capcom) 3DS – 26,071
4. Dai-3-ji Super Robot Taisen Z: Jigoku-hen (Bandai Namco) PS3 – 20,368
5. Mario Party Island Tour (Nintendo) 3DS – 17,588
6. Dai-3-ji Super Robot Taisen Z: Jigoku-hen (Bandai Namco) Vita – 14,541
7. Wagamama Fashion: GIRLS MODE (Nintendo) 3DS – 12,522
8. Juzaengi: Engetsu Sangokuden2 (Idea Factory) PSP – 12,135
9. Detective Conan: Phantom Rhapsody (Bandai Namco) 3DS 8,013
10. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (Nintendo) 3DS – 7,214
And here are the hardware numbers:
1. PS Vita – 17,238
2. Nintendo 3DS LL – 16,703
3. PS4 – 13,034
4. PS3 – 7,569
5. Wii U – 5,588
6. Nintendo 3DS – 5,644
7. PSP – 1,707
8. PS Vita TV – 988
9. Xbox 360 – 187

Facebook has earned U.S. antitrust approval to purchase Oculus VR, clearing the way for its acquisition of the company and its Oculus Rift VR headset technology, Reuters reports.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission approved the acquisition this week. Facebook announced its purchase plans last month, revealing that it will pay $2 billion to acquire Oculus VR and its assets.
Oculus VR crowdfunded its headset technology in 2012, later expanding its development team with the addition of former Valve software engineer Tom Forsyth, University of Illinois robotics scientist Steve Lavelle, and id Software co-founder John Carmack. The Oculus Rift headset has sold over 85,000 units to date.

Now that Unreal Engine 4 supports Oculus Rift, any virtual environment built with the platform can easily be pushed right over to the VR headset. Naturally, there's a Star Trek fan using every bit of bleeding-edge technology, so it's no surprise to see that a fan has crafted one of the first environments to take advantage of the feature. Oculus developer Thomas Kadlec has crafted the bridge of the USS Voyager for you to wander around, interact with and generally pretend that you're dodging Borg in the Delta quadrant. It's available to download now, so you can relive all of those moments when you hoped that Voyager would finally become any good, but didn't.

On the heels of last week's KitKat update, Google Glass nabbed up two more notable improvements today. First, iOS users can now have their text messages displayed on Glass, after a quick toggle of the Bluetooth settings. Here's the catch: "due to some limitations with iOS," you wont be able to reply to those messages directly from the headset. There's also a new Calendar Glassware that situates an agenda to the left of the home screen. Tapping a card in that timeline will allow you edit title, time, location and even RSVP. If you'd rather just skip those festivities altogether, you can delete events or hide them from view. Both of the new features are said to be rolling out to early adopters "in the next few days," so keep your eyes peeled.

[Roman Rolinsky] wanted to try to do something interesting with his Raspberry Pi and a 2.8″ LCD he had laying about… So he made a rather bulky version of Google Glass.
We’ve seen a few examples of home brew Google Glass before, or even real-life subtitle glasses used for translation on the fly, but what we really like about [Roman's] project (besides the fact he hosted it on our very own awesome project hosting site) is that he’s put together the projection system himself out of basic components.
To create the HUD, he’s using a semi-transparent mirror which he took out of an Eye of Horus Beamsplitter game – which is a really cool real-life puzzle board game like those games where you have to reflect the laser to solve a puzzle. He’s then using a 3x Fresnel magnification lens which is placed over top of his 2.8″ LCD in a 3D printed enclosure. This magnifies and reflects the image onto the mirror which is placed directly over his eye, allowing for a see through display.
We’ve asked for a demonstration video, so if you follow his project you’ll get all the future updates of his Raspberry Eye.

A terminally ill woman has reminded us of the limitless potential for devices like the Oculus Rift beyond just gaming and entertainment. After Roberta Firstenberg's cancer treatments failed last year, she was told she had just a few months to live. That prompted her game artist granddaughter Priscilla ("Pri") to send a moving note to the Oculus Rift support team, who quickly decided to send a dev unit. Using the 3D headset, Roberta was able to experience mobility again with theTuscany Villa demo, complete with virtual trees, stairs and butterflies. She was even able to see her younger self and a beloved, deceased pet via a fortuitous Google Street View snap -- which inspired another idea.

If games, wildlife documentaries and virtual strolls in the park aren't enough to validate virtual reality for you, try this one: educational motivation. School children in Ireland have been using a open source version of Second Life to learn coding, 3D modeling and to create virtual spaces of recent field trips. Their most recent project: recreating the monastery of Clonmacnoise and exploring it with an Oculus Rift. Technically the Rift isn't part of the classroom's normal operations -- the founder of the MissionV virtual reality platform the school is visiting brought it with him on a recent visit -- but it did give the students a new perspective on the world they had built. "Whoa," one student exclaimed, looking at the classroom's recreation of Clonmacnoise's McCarthy Tower. "That is humongous."

In broadcast, lots of people are still using dedicated analog lines to connect remote sites. These operate like old telephone systems: you call up the operator and request to be patched through to a specific site. They’re also rather expensive.
For a hospital radio station, [Marc] wanted to replace the old system with something less costly. The result is his Raspberry Pi STL in a Box. Inside the box is a Raspberry Pi, PiFacedisplay, a pair of meters, and some analog hardware for the audio.
On the software side, the system uses LiquidSoap to manage the stream. LiquidSoap uses a language to configure streams, and [Marc] has a write-up on how to configure LiquidSoapfor this application. On the hardware side, SSM2142 ICs convert the signal from single-ended to balanced. The meters use the LM3915 bar drivers to control the meters.
The Python script that controls the box is provided, and could be helpful for anyone needing to build their own low-cost audio link.

Not everyone can drop a few hundred dollars on a VR headset, but that doesn't mean they can't experience VR! For those with the time and a bit of handiwork skill, this DIY guide from guest writer Ohaple will show you how to make a smartphone-based VR headset for as little as $20. Along the way, you'll learn the hardware and software basics of a VR headset."This project screams for a ready-made commercial version; does anyone know of existing purpose-built headgear? As one of the comments on the linked tutorial says, Poppy seems close, but lacks an LED for tracking.

The PS4 sold more than the Xbox One or any other console in March – making it the hardware leader for the third consecutive month – market research group NPD reports. The Xbox One and PS4 pushed US hardware sales in March up 78 percent from 2013, from $222 million to $395 million. Overall game sales in March were up 3 percent year-over-year.
Five months in, the PS4 and Xbox One are out-performing initial sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360, NPD Group's Liam Callahan says: "When comparing the first five months of sales for the Xbox One and PS4 to their predecessor's first five months, total Xbox One and PS4 sales are up close to 60 percent."
Xbox One has shipped 5 million Xbox One consoles, with 311,000 sales in the US in March alone, Microsoft announced today: "Of course, we're just getting started with this generation and the months ahead will bring several announcements we think you'll love. The team will continue to deliver regular improvements and new features based on your feedback through frequent system updates .... We can't wait to share more games with you in June at E3."
On April 16, Sony announced that PS4 sales had passed 7 million.
Titanfall was the top-selling game for the month, launching for Xbox One and PC on March 11. It is the second-highest selling game for Xbox One after just one month on the market. It was followed by Infamous: Second Son, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Dark Souls 2. See the complete game sales list below. On PC, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls sold the most on a unit and dollar-amount basis.
Software sales declined 27 percent overall. "Year-over-year sales of every platform declined from March 2013, with the exception of the PS Vita, which saw sales grow due to the release of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster," Callahan said.
Sales of video game accessories in March rose 4 percent, led by sales of controllers for Xbox One and PS4, NPD says. Other notable accessories included Turtle Beach headphones and headsets for next-gen consoles. Turtle Beach sales grew 50 percent year-over-year.

Tempted by Google's Glass headset, but worried it'll make you look like a doofus? It's a legitimate concern, but there's hope: Google is now sending out non-functional dummy units that you can try on at home. Potential Explorers were sent an email advertising a "home try-on kit" with four Google Glass frame styles in four colors - all titanium, of course. After trying on the frames and picking a favorite, participants send the units back with pre-paid labels. Easy. The trial program isn't listed on the official Glass website yet, but anyone can sign up by calling 855-9Glass9. The cost of pretending you have Mountain View's most exclusive accessory? Absolutely free, though Google will put a $50 hold on your credit card until you return the headgear. Just because it doesn't work doesn't mean the company doesn't want it back.

Sony wants to prove to the world that virtual reality is not just for hardcore gamers playing on their own.
The platform holder revealed its VR headset – Project Morpheus – at the Games Developer Conference last month. It even showed off a number of demos including a diving simulation called The Deep, which was developed by Sony’s London studio.
And the head of the studio has told MCV that it has been experimenting with ways to make virtual reality a more social experience with people in the same room who do not have a headset.
“One of the things that we have worked on quite hard is something we call the social screen,” said studios boss Dave Ranyard.
“And that is where you can see on the TV a version of what the person within the Morpheus is seeing. And we can link up a tablet or a phone to the device, so we have companion app play. In our demo The Deep a second person with the companion app can add in extra sea life, like a giant turtle, which the shark can then attack before it gets you. If you put these things together, you can have one person in Morpheus and a group of people in the living room either helping or hinderingthat person.
“The 1970s future vision of virtual reality was a very solo experience of people playing on their own. But actually it might not be that, it might be quite a social experience.”
His comments follow Facebook’s acquisition of rival VR headset Oculus Rift, and that company’s plans to make VR a more mass-market proposition.

The main concerns with Google’s wearable tech remain about privacy.
Google Glass went on general sale yesterday for one day only – however amongst the approximate 70 per cent of people that were unaware of what it was, this probably didn’t get their techie taste buds tingling as much as Google Would’ve liked.
Only 12 per cent of respondents reckoned they knew a lot about the device, and 20 per cent said they’d heard of it but knew little about it, reveals Gorkana Group.
47 per cent think that the wearable tech will raise privacy concerns, and 20 per cent even say it should be banned in public places.
Jeremy Thompson, CEO of Gorkana Group, commented: “The data clearly shows that Google Glass has a long way to go in gaining wide appeal in the UK.
“A significant majority have concerns about privacy, which certainly suggests that education about the product is going to be as important as they technology features.”
LoveMyVouchers.co.uk revealed that 68 per cent of people were too ashamed to wear Google Glass – and I have to say I am with them. It looks… Silly.
Plus I would feel just as comfortable talking to someone directly who was wearing the device, as I would if they were shoving their smartphone aggressively into my face whilst conversing.

The bond between a fanboy and his or her console can chemically be compared to love.
That’s according to Dr David Lewis-Hodgson, director of research at Mindlab International, who has told Kotaku UKthat enraged forum commentators are effectively defending a loved one.
"It often takes time to develop such an irrational attachment to a product," he said. "Sometimes it’s like falling in love – what happens then is that you get a tsunami of a neurotransmitter called dopamine into the brain, which gives you a huge buzz.
“This happens with products, they can do exactly the same thing – in fact when we look at addictive behaviour, we find that people become addicted to products. The sight and touch of the product gives them a dopamine high."
