PS3 - PS3 Homebrew

The PlayStation mod known as 'PSJailbreak' has apparently seen so much demand that it has sold out.

Shoppsjailbreak (which operates out of the USA) has announced that it has run out of the USB hacking tool, which allows PS3 owners to copy games to the hard drive play the backup games.

The site posted this message earlier today:

***NEWS UPDATE: We are sorry to say that we are currently not accepting sales online for the PS Jailbreak as we are currently out of stock.
We have been informed by ********** that our next shipment of PS Jailbreaks is going to arrive on Monday August 23rd 2010.
Until then, we are only accepting reservations so we can guarantee that we will put a PS Jailbreak aside for you as soon as they come in on Monday, you will then be contacted on Tuesday and asked to place your order online at ***********
In order to get a reservation simply email us at ********

Obviously Sony won't be happy about the existence of a PS3 hack. There have been reports that the platform holder will be able to detect those using it.

So far, however, Sony has refused to comment on the matter.

PS3 - PS3 Homebrew

A great way to play (ps2) Homebrew on the PS2 and also PS3 is enabled through this software.

News via http://ps3.gx-mod.com/modules/news/a...p?storyid=1702

Open PS2 Loader is an application made to play your PS2 homebrew from a USB device or a networked PC with a PS2 or a PS3 that supports backward compatibility.

This open source project picks up PS3 USBADVANCE originally developed by Ifcaro (which is part of the team developing the project).

New / fixed:

- Improved network configuration and various corrections
- Added support for internal HDD format (HDL)
- Added the possibility to choose the default menu (USB, NET, HDD games)
- Added the possibility to use a valid ID Disc for online games
- Added a fix for the problems of freezes with some modchips
- Numerous fixes for compatibility for games
- Addition of IGR (In Game Reset) with an option to disable it for every game
- Adding an alphabetical listing
- Changing the settings categories
- Added page scrolling (R1/L1)
- Added support for language files created by users
- Added support network for the PS3
- Added support for themes in zip format
- Added support for PCMCIA 18K

Use:

You must have a compatible USB device PS2/PS3 formatted in FAT32 (only if you want to run games via USB).
To launch the games via the SMB protocol, you need to share a folder named PS2SMB (it is possible to change the name) accessible to everyone.

Games must be formatted Advance / Extreme. There are few programs to convert these formats to play. Open PS2 Loader includes a command line tool dedicated to this task and called iso2usbld.

Other tools are: usbutils 2.0, USB Extreme or USB install Insane.

On PS2 you can use any existing method for loading ELF executables.

On PS3 you must have an original SwapMagic 3.6 + or 3.8 (there is no alternative for the moment).

The steps to launch Open PS2 PS3 Loader are:

1. Rename OpenPS2LD.ELF in SMBOOT0.ELF
2. Create a folder named SWAPMAGIC at the root of your USB device and copy the file SMBOOT0.ELF in it.
3. Start SwapMagic on your PS3 and press UP + L1 which should launch Open PS2 Loader.

There are 4 possible launch ELF via SwapMagic.

UP + L1 = SMBOOT0.ELF
SMBOOT1.ELF = UP + L2
SMBOOT2.ELF UP + R1 =
SMBOOT3.ELF = UP + R2

PS3 - PS3 Homebrew

After the sad news that sony will kill Linux support with the next update set to be released tomorrow, the  PS3 and Iphone hacker George Hotz has said that he will relase a fix so you can run Linux and still have the latest firmware, he posted:

Don't Update

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won't. It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn't about getting what you didn't pay for, it's about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It's about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.
