Valve's Half-Life 2 along with Episodes One and Two are out of beta and available for download on Steam for Linux, the company announced today. While we welcome anyHalf-Life news, it's hard to not get disappointed when the number three isn't involved. Gordon Freeman's last known appearance uses the new SteamPipe content delivery system and "numerous" community bug fixes have been implemented.
That's not all! Oculus Rift (and other virtual reality device) support has been added as well. We aren't aware of any other VR units besides the Rift, but in March Valve told usit's pursuing hardware itself. Speculating about other VR systems isn't far from speculating about Half-Life 3's existence -- we don't know anything at this point. However, Linux gaming site Phoronix says to expect more good Valve Linux news in July. We reached out to Valve for more info and will update if we hear anything back.

New research suggests that releasing a demo before a game is released with actually damage potential sales, potentially halving the number of copies it will shift.
This was revealed by game designer Jesse Schell during the recent Gamelab conference in Barcelona, according toCVG. Schell based his claims on new data from research firm EEDAR.
According to the study, the average Xbox 360 game that is preceded by both a demo and a launch trailer will sell around 250,000 units in its first six months.
However, titles that only released a launch trailer and no demo sold more than twice as many copies – as much as 525,000 – in same period.
Any game that releases with neither a trailer nor a demo sold an average of 100,000 units.
But it should be noted that the study doesn't conclude whether or not demos discourage sales directly.
It could be that the best-selling games don't release demos because they have rarely needed to in the past: Call of Duty, for example, only releases demos months after launch.

If you’ve done any wireless work with hobby electronics you probably recognize this part. The green PCB is an RFM12B wireless board. They come in a few different operating bandwidths, the 433 MHz is probably the most common. They’re super easy to interface with a small microcontroller but what about an embedded Linux board? That is the focus of this project, which builds a kernel driver for the RF module.
You can get your own RFM12B for a few bucks. They’re quite versatile when paired, but a lot of inexpensive wireless consumer goods operate on this band so the board can be used to send commands to wireless outlets, light fixtures, etc. [Georg] has been working with the BeagleBone, BeagleBone Black, and Raspberry Pi. His software package lets you build a kernel module to add an entry for the device into the /dev directory of a Linux system. So far the three boards listed are all that’s supported, but if you have five I/O pins available it should be a snap to tailor this to other hardware.
Wondering what else you can do with the setup? This will get the receiving end of a text-messaging doorbell up and running in no time.

Xbox 360 is this generation's best-selling home games console in the UK, says GfK Chart-Track.
Microsoft's platform will overtake Wii in a matter of days, the stat tracker says. Xbox 360 is regularly outselling all rivals in hardware terms, and has now shifted 8.4m consoles across the country.
“This is an historic milestone and our sincere thanks goes to each and every person that has bought and enjoyed Xbox 360 over the past eight years," Director of Xbox and entertainment Harvey Eagle told MCV.
"As you saw at E3 earlier this month, we announced a new Xbox 360 form factor and we are committed to ensuring Xbox 360 remains the best place to play games, connect with friends and enjoy your entertainment. You’ll see great exclusive content coming not only to Xbox 360, but also to Xbox One later this year.”
It's a significant achievement for Microsoft as it prepares to launch Xbox One. The new platform has had a troubled start after its controversial business model angered gamers. But the platform holder has since cancelled these plans in a bid to win back favour amongst the fans.
However, Xbox 360 still has some way to go before it can be named the best selling home console of all time. PS2 holds that record with 10m consoles sold.

Acclaimed developer Patrice Desilets doesn’t believe the recent furore over the Xbox One’s digital strategy will halt the march toward a disc-less future.
"Yeah, games come on disc, and I get it guys you were really pissed off," he said of the Xbox One backlash at the Gamelab conference in Barcelona, as reported by Games Industry. "But, deep down, nobody cares about not having CDs any more. The future is digital, and there's nothing you can do about it."
The former THQ and Ubisoft dev went on to argue that while the industry is arguably at a turning point, this in no way threatens the future of triple-A games.
"Right now we are at a crossroads in our industry but I don't believe the triple-A blockbuster will die,” he added. “Maybe the way it is distributed will change, but it won't die.
“Eventually AAA will make money again. The future is digital all the way."

Want to embrace Recon Instruments' sunglasses-based vision of the future before it officially reaches store shelves? You can: the company has just started pre-orders for itsJet heads-up display in a $499 Pilot Edition. The inaugural eyewear will come with apps for both cyclists and triathletes, and it should beat the production model to market by several months. There's even a financial incentive for that impatience, as the pricing goes up to $599 on July 21st. If you don't mind a potentially rough experience while tracking your mid-race performance, the Pilot Edition is waiting at the source link.

Valve's 2013 update available from github
[h=3]Valve Corporation[/h]
Valve has released a 2013 update for the Source Engine SDK, adding support for Mac and Linux systems as well an enabling development for the Occulus Rift.
The SDK will also be available from github for the first time, according to a post announcing the release.
Other changes are relatively minor, including an updated licence agreement intended to make sharing easier for SDK modders, support for dedicated servers on Windows and Linux, the ability to build and run OSX, Windows and Linux clients and the phasing out of the SDK Launcher. Tools previously bundled with the launcher will now be included with the relevant games, instead.
Developer kits for the Occulus Rift have been arriving with backers and early adopters recently, so expect to see some of the profits of VR Source tinkering appearing soon.

Seriously, the drawer pull on this Atari 2600 is not stock. Don’t they know this voids the warranty? The thing is, you won’t actually find any of the original internals anyway. When building this portable emulator housed in a 2600 case [Linear Nova] was careful to ensure that everything could be restored to its original condition (except for two hinges mounted on the back) sometime down the road. That’s a good goal to set for yourself. We think the build is the fun part of most projects and often wonder what to do with them when they’re done and our interest has waned.
A seven-inch LCD screen was attached to the underside of the lid using Velcro. When tilted up it’s at a nice viewing angle for the player. [Linear] prefers to use a Wii remote as the control this portable video game emulator. It connects to the Raspberry Pi over Bluetooth using a USB dongle. The advantage of this is that you just throw the remote inside the case too. For now there are two power cords, one for the RPi and the other for the LCD screen but he plans to add a power hub in the future to narrow this down to one. We wonder it that would also be a good time to add his own rechargeable battery pack option? There should be enough room for an RC style pack.

A second game has succumbed to Australia’s Classification system.
Xbox Live hit State of Decay has been refused classification by the Australian Classification Board.
“We've run afoul of certain prohibitions regarding the depiction of drug use,” the game’s developer Undead Labs revealed on its forums. “We're working with Microsoft to come up with options, including changing names of certain medications in the game to comply with ratings requirements. Whatever our path forward, it's going to take a bit.
“I know this is frustrating — believe me, we're frustrated too — but each country has the right to set its own rules about content, and it's our responsibility to comply with them. Rest assured we'll do everything we can to find a way to get the game into your hands. Stay tuned.”
Only yesterday it was confirmed that Saints Row IV had become the first game to be banned since the introduction of a new supposedly mature-friendly classification system in January.

Mining bitcoins is becoming a fool’s errand, but there’s always some new piece of hardware coming out that allows those hard-core miners to keep ahead of the curve. One such piece of hardware are new custom ASIC devices that are just as fast as an FPGA while being much less expensive. A lot of these ASIC devices come in interesting packages that look just like a large USB thumb drive. Of course this is the perfect opportunity to show off what the Raspberry Pi can do by mining Bitcoins at rates comparable to the best graphics used in mining today.
The Raspberry Pi simply doesn’t have enough horsepower to mine bitcoins at any worthwhile rate. There are, however, USB ASIC devices that will mine for you at about the same speed as a high-end graphics card. Since multiple ASIC devices can be controlled through a USB hub, it’s simply a matter of plugging a USB hub into a Raspberry Pi, loading up CGminer, and letting your new PiMiner loose on a mining pool.
The Adafruit Pi Miner uses one of their really cool LCD character displays and keypad to display the current mining rate, accepted shares, and enough information for you to calculate how long it will take to break even with your Pi powered mining rig. How long that will be for this four device rig we’ll leave to the comments section.

Games consoles are becoming homogeneous appliances with few distinguishing features, argues Will Luton
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
[h=3]Sony Computer Entertainment[/h]Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese videogame company specialising in a variety of areas in the...
playstation.com
Following the Microsoft-Sony PR circus that was E3 a number of fairweather gamer friends asked me: "What's new about those new consoles?" That's a pretty tough question. "The games sort of look a bit nicer", I'd answer.
"So similar are these black electronic monoliths that the major focus of E3 was each system's DRM. And now even that's the same"
Traditionally the trigger to buy a games console has come from a feature over the past generation: CD sound, 3D graphics, online connectivity, DVD playback, HD graphics et al. However, the Xbox One and the PS4 seem at best to offer incremental updates on existing characteristics, such as TV and motion tracking, rather than sizable new features.
In fact, despite closely watching the E3 coverage I had to rebrief myself on what these machines actually did new. I struggle to find a clear (£350+ clear) distinction over the current machine under my TV or indeed a major distinction between the two consoles. So similar are these black electronic monoliths that the major focus of E3 was each system's DRM. And now even that's the same.
To me it's clear that games consoles are heading towards becoming generic appliances with little distinguishing features, like microwave ovens. Indeed in the current generation Xbox or PlayStation was a coin flip decision: ultimately they delivered the same content in the same way.
As budgets for AAA games continue to push upward, so to does the need for the widest possible audience. This financial risk makes betting on one platform, when there are two so similar with roughly equal audience share, a bad business decision. This is unlikely to change in the next generation, unless supporting both platforms is considerably difficult (looks unlikely) and one takes considerable marketshare over the other (ditto).
What does this homogenisation mean? Firstly the console market is unlikely to grow this generation by Sony or Microsoft's hand. Even as the best TV and movie experience, these machines are games machines and will be bought by self-identifying gamers. If you had no interest in the last two generations, you're unlikely to find this generation appealing.
Secondly, the uptake for this generation will be much slower. With ostensibly incremental feature improvements, the pitch falls on the shoulders of the content and with budgets increasing this content is likely to be incrementally more explosive, yet fewer. Whilst early adopters will early adopt, I expect the sales tail will be long.
Thirdly, with hardware and software so similar, like the previous generation, neither Sony nor Mircosoft are going to run away with the market. However, it's clear that consumers are concerned about the overall quality and convenience of the service (see DRM forum rage), which could well be how the platforms are able to distinguish themselves. This however is a long slow dance.
Finally, whilst I know that there's a great number of gamers to whom console gaming is important and to me that very much used to be the case, in writing this piece I have to admit something that I'd rather not: I'm no longer excited by games consoles. And I think it's not just only me.
The next generation of consoles are not only vying for my wallet, but also my time, against a backdrop of abundant free or very cheap fresh content on PC, web and mobile. Even board games. Whilst the titles on display at E3 looked pretty and deep, they also looked tired and generic compared to what new independent developers and startups (many of whom, as I wrote last month, are still locked out from consoles) are doing elsewhere.
Being so jaded by consoles makes me feel broken; I often drag myself to GAME looking for discs to feed my PS3. I meander the aisle hoping something will grab me, hoping that there's something on the shelves I can love. I look at the boxes of men with guns, the shiny cars and myriad sports and feel unable to part with £40. I'm pervaded by the sense that I've played these games before and they aren't for me.
"If you had no interest in the last two generations, you're unlikely to find this generation appealing"
And therein lies a truth: Console gaming is still a niche aimed at a slither of the population. Over 16 years Grand Theft Auto, one of console gaming's biggest titles, has sold around 120 million copies, whilst in only four years the Angry Birds series has seen over 1 billion downloads. That's roughly a 1:8 ratio.
Gaming is bigger than just consoles now; it's a mainstream media approaching the level of reach and cultural significance as movies, music or TV. Yet I can't shake the feeling that, despite the abundant enthusiasm of many vocal gamers, that the next generation of consoles will be met with a great deal of apathy from many more. It's a sector that many in the industry have predicted runs the risk of stagnating and stalling. I fear it already has.
Whilst I don't expect the complete disappearance of consoles, I think their golden age is drawing to an end, leaving them wide open to erosion from the varied, cheap and ever evolving content on platforms already in players' lives and those on the horizon.

The boss of EA Sports has warned his teams not to ‘screw up’ its next gen games.
EVP Andrew Wilson is wary of the impact new technology can have on the sports genre, describing new consoles as an ‘inflection point’.
“Our first objective for the next generation is not to screw up,” he told MCV. “We were here last generation and we screwed up. We must make sure we don’t lose the investment we have made to make great sports games. Don’t lose focus on the goal of making great games. Don’t let all of the ancillary fluff get in the way of making great games on these new platforms.”
He added: “A new generation is an inflection point. You can get distracted by things. You can fall foul of new technology. You can not plan appropriately. What we have done is establish EA Sports technology with EA Sports Ignite upfront and in advance so that we are ready and prepared.
“We are focused more than we have ever been. Especially more so than we were this time last generation. And we have teams now that are stronger than anything that we had back then. It is an inflection point, and it can be a positive one or a negative one.
“We are engineering it so it will be a positive inflection point for us and for gamers.”
As well as introducing a new Ignite engine, the publishing label is also set to re-launch its basketball series NBA Live for next-gen, and unveiled its first UFC title.
“We are going to give UFC a launch like it has never seen,” said Wilson. “When I look at the last generation, Fight Night became a platform-defining title. UFC has the potential to be the next generation’s platform-defining fighting experience. And we have got to live up to that.”

Xbox One, PS4 announcements doesn't mean publisher will reinstate program
EA won't be rebooting its Online Pass program despite the news that neither the Xbox One or PS4 will offer first party anti-used games restrictions.
The publisher had first announced the removal of the program, which charges those who bought used game an additional fee to activate it for online multiplayer, in the days before Microsoft unvieled a new console that was said to have its own anti-used game systems in place.
Since then Sony has revealed that its PlayStation 4 wouldn't have any such restrictions and Microsoft was forced to backtrack, but EA tells Polygon it doesn't plan on reversing course.
[There is] no change to our decision to discontinue Online Pass," said EA's senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg. "It is dead."
“As we said a few weeks ago, none of our new EA titles will include online pass, and we are removing it from existing games as well. Nothing else on today's news, but did want to be clear that our online pass decision was based on player feedback, and there's no change."

Microsoft and Sony will implement slow and subtle move to online on next-gen hardware
The shift to extensive digital offerings on the Xbox One and PS4 will still happen despite Microsoft’s recent U-turn on its online and used games policies, says Cliff Bleszinski.
In a new blog post, the Gears of War creator said however, given the backlash against digital on consoles, the move would be slow and subtle.
He stated consumers could expect to start seeing more downloadable content and more microtransactions in games as the transition to digital takes place. He also said games sold digitally at the same time as retail could eventually be cheaper and come with extra benefits to tempt users away from packaged retail.
“So here’s what’s going to happen now that Microsoft has largely matched Sony’s (well played) move at E3,” said Bleszinski.
“The shift to digital is still going to happen (FOR BOTH) but it’s going to be slow and subtle. Suddenly more DLC will be made available. More microstransactions will appear. And Day One Digital will (hopefully) be cheaper and will have so many added bells and whistles that consumers (with reliable enough bandwidth) will have a hard time refusing the tasty downloadable edition over the disc based one.”

A survey has found that wearable technology is proving popular amongst consumers, with many eager to adopt such devices.
Results of a new report from Forrester reveal 21.6 million US online consumers – 12 per cent of the country's population – would be willing to wear augmented reality eyeglasses, if they carry a trusted brand name.
In other words: Google Glass.
Following the survey, Forrester highlighted the demand for wearable tech, predicting such devices could experience the same success that the iPhone generated on its release.
"Not since Apple's iPhone debuted in 2007 has a computing device attracted as much attention as Google Glass," said Sarah Rotman, Forrester analyst, within the report.
"We have no doubt that in time, Glass will be the next iPhone."
Expected to be available to consumers in 2014, Google Glass combines augmented reality and wearable technology together, providing users with the ability to take photos, record videos, chat, receive directions, browse the web and other features commonly found on mobile devices.
