IBM is putting together a super powerful computer following the model of the human brain.
Once upon a time, IBM made normal things like computers and stuff – but has of late turned its attention to more ambitious projects like creating artificial intelligence type processors like this, using crowd sourcing to predict disease spreads, and last year it announced an adapted super-computer had successfully sent a server engineer back in time 4000 years.
Ok, the last one we made up – but IBM is working on a ‘human like’ artificial brain.
Now, the human brain is an incredible thing (in most cases) – and even the most powerful mega computational constructions that take up an office building can’t hope to emulate the intricacies of your thoughts.
They are still basically adding machines, even if they add up a hell of a lot faster than your abacus.
The principles of how they work hasn’t really changed in 50 years – the ‘if x then do y’ still underpins even the most sophisticated computer.
Not for long - IBM boffins argue that with mega-reams of data ever expanding, we need more complex foundations for our computers.
IBM said in its blog on ‘neurosynaptic chips’: “The cognitive capabilities of the brain includes understanding the surrounding environment, dealing with ambiguity, acting in real time and within context – all while consuming less than power than a light bulb and occupying less space than a two-liter bottle of soda.”
This new way of computing will apparently be more like the way we think – adaptable and contextual process in real time, rather than just straight up number crunching,
Sci fi is replete with human like robot intelligence – and while some are benevolent and curious, like Data from Star Trek, most end up on a murderous human killing spree.
Is that what you want IBM?

Every story has a beginning and an end – and giant, violent robots, according to Activision. A teaser for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Origins popped up on the today, offering no more information beyond its title and the video.
The video shows a series of close-ups on four men with grizzled faces from varying worldwide regions and wearing hardcore adventuring gear, along with what appears to be an ancient temple and a series of bunkers. Then the four men look up and surprise, it's a huge mech.
We reached out to Activision but it wouldn't provide any more information about what Origins is.

Publisher to make games based on Monopoly, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and more for current and next-gen hardware
[h=3]Electronic Arts[/h]ea.com
[h=3]Hasbro[/h]
Ubisoft unveiled another portion of its next-gen strategy today, as the publisher announced a deal with Hasbro to develop and publish console games based on many of the toy maker's popular brands for existing and future consoles. Among the brands confirmed in the deal were Monopoly, Scrabble (US and Canada only), Trivial Pursuit, Risk, Battleship, and Cranium.
Mark Blecher, Hasbro's senior VP and GM for digital gaming, released a statement on the deal, saying, "Ubisoft's leadership and expertise in the console gaming space will help support Hasbro's strategy of bringing consumers engaging play experiences with our brands across multiple platforms."
Ubisoft gave no indication as to when its Hasbro-based efforts would see release.
The previous rights holder to board games like Monopoly and Scrabble was Electronic Arts, which first obtained the exclusive rights to make games based on an array of Hasbro brands in 2007. EA hasn't released console games based on those brands since 2011's multiplatform Family Game Night 4: The Game Show and Trivial Pursuit: Bet You Know It for Wii. Last month, EA signed a new four-year agreement with Hasbro to develop mobile titles based on a number of its properties.

Microsoft’s former games VP Ed Fries has warned big publishers that a digital gaming future could result in their demise
He told [a]listdaily that the shift from physical to digital eradicates the very reasons large publishers were formed in the first place.
“Who knows if there'll be big publishers in the future? There don't have to be,” Fries said. “Maybe the world of the future doesn't look like that. Maybe it's just lots of small developers, getting together and then breaking up into little teams all over the world, that's where great games are going to come from.
“Big publishers were formed because games were really expensive, there were big distribution issues. Walmart didn't want to deal with a hundred companies, they wanted to deal with four or five. A lot of those things changed with digital distribution. Maybe what we'll see in the future isn't like what we've seen in the past. What does that mean? There are winners and losers all through that.
“It's not necessarily a better future for anyone. If you're at a publisher, it's 'Oh, maybe my future is not so good.' Even from a developer point of view, it might mean you get a hit and then you don't get a hit again. Angry Birds this year, next year it's Supercell, the year after it's Mojang. It's random little groups all over the place.
“Maybe that's where the most creativity is going to come from. Customers will just pick and choose, as they always do, whatever's hottest, most fun at that time. That's a very different world we have to think about.”
He was more complimentary about Microsoft, however, praising the platform holder for its response to the Xbox One controversy.
“I was impressed,” Fries added. “I was concerned that they wouldn't change, and I was impressed that they did change, and changed quickly. They clearly are responsive to feedback, and I think that's great.
“We all make products for customers, and it's important that we listen to our customers when they have things to say to us. It's a lot more true than it was in the old days. If you think about games, we used to spend three years making games and stick them in a box, and people liked them or they didn't like them.”
The comments make a pleasant change for Microsoft after two industry figures in the last weekaccused it of being too weak for its policy U-turns.

Organization says Congress is seeking to undermine games as protected speech
The Entertainment Consumers Association is voicing its opposition to the Violent Content Research Act, which asks Congress to fund research into the effects of video game violence on children.
The bill first appeared in December following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, but was not given a vote before Congress was disbanded.
It was reintroduced to the new congress in January, and last week the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation approved a plan to amend the bill.
While the Entertainment Software Association and other trade bodies have remained silent on the issue of further research, the ECA has called on its members to contact their representatives to convince them to oppose the measure.
"The ECA has numerous concerns about this and feels that this is a distraction to finding the real cause of these events," reads a statement from the group.

Virtual reality firm opens new Dallas office
Id software co-founder and technical director John Carmack has joined Oculus as its chief technology officer.
Carmack will work from the virtual reality company’s new office in Dallas, which the firm is currently in the process of staffing up.
A spokesperson has told Develop that he has joined the company on a full-time basis.
“I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming – the intensity of the first person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on,” he said.
“Duct taping a strap and hot gluing sensors onto Palmer’s early prototype Rift and writing the code to drive it ranks right up there. Now is a special time. I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer. The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message.

When I spoke to Ken Levine in Boston last Monday about BioShock Infinite DLC, I also wanted to get his quick take on the next generation of consoles. Levine, though, was more interested in talking about another piece of forward-looking technology."From a hardware perspective, the PC and the Xbox and the PS4 are very much similar beasts in a lot of ways now," he said. "It's more about the software on top of it and the services they provide."What I'm excited about - you saw that Google dongle that came out the other day? - is something like that for games."That Google dongle is better known as Chromecast, a $35 HDMI gizmo that plugs into your TV and allows you to stream from YouTube, Netflix and other media services via the cloud using a tablet or laptop as a remote.

Gaming business lags with no major releases as Walt Disney Company grows overall revenues, profits
[h=3]The Walt Disney Company[/h]
Disney's video game division is the company's odd one out lately. The multimedia giant today announced its third quarter earnings, revealing gaming as its only business segment running an operating loss over the first nine months of the fiscal year.
The three months ended June 29 were particularly difficult for the Interactive business, as it saw declining revenues as well as deepening operating losses year-over-year. Sales were down 7 percent to $183 million, while operating losses went from $42 million in the prior-year quarter to $58 million. Disney cited a lack of new console releases in the quarter and declining social gaming numbers as two contributors to the decline, noting they were partially offset by gains in its Japanese mobile efforts.
While the company didn't share projections, Disney's Interactive business may turn things around in the current quarter. That stretch includes the retail debut of the company's biggest bet in some time, Disney Infinity. The crossover game will feature characters from a variety of Disney properties, and arrive alongside a full line of action figures that can be used to unlock new content in the game.
The only other segment in Disney to see sales or operating profit declines year-over-year was the Studio Entertainment division, which benefited from hits like Iron Man 3 and Monsters University, but had trouble measuring up to last year's third quarter, when it released The Avengers. The Walt Disney Company as a whole posted quarterly revenues up 4 percent to $11.58 billion, with net income up 1 percent to $1.85 billion.

Here’s yet another example of well targeted advertising. This camera built around a Raspberry Pi is a giveaway from Sprite. The “lucky” winner of the camera will have the pleasure of seeing the Sprite logo as a watermark on all of the images they snap with it. But in the right hands it’s a simple hack to remove that “feature” (they published the Python script that adds the watermark) or to just scrap the parts for another project. Either way, Sprite got us to say their name three times in this paragraph so the campaign worked.
The most obvious part of this build is the custom cast resin case that they came up with which is a gaudy cartoon-like monstrosity. It protects the case-less Raspberry Pi board, and mounts the Pi Camera board so that the lens is positioned correctly. The lipstick-sized module mounted in the lower back half of the case is a 2400 mAh portable power supply with a USB charging port sticking out the side. This makes us wonder, do you have to wait for the RPi to power up before snapping a picture? If the size and color didn’t get you noticed by everyone the shutter sound will. it shouts the name of the soda company whenever you press the shutter release button.
If you’re more of a high-end photography enthusiast this DSLR wedded with an RPi will be of more interest.

Summer is well and truly upon us, with most of the UK basking in the first welcome rays of sunshine. The games industry, meanwhile, is prepared to sit beneath its traditional dark cloud as it enters its yearly quiet period.
The summer has always been the least important time of year for games, accounting for only 12 per cent of yearly spend. One of the main reasons for this is that big titles just aren’t released at this time of year. Blockbuster titles tend to launch around Christmas period, with two thirds of all revenue in December coming from people who buy games as a gift. This contrasts with only 19 per cents spent on gifts during August.
But it isn’t simply a lack of new blockbuster titles that accounts for the fall in sales. Last summer, sales of catalogue games, those which have been on the shelves for three months or more, fell by 23 per cent.
These are games that should, in theory at least, sell equally well across the year. The fact that they fall over the summer is an indication that fewer people are shopping for games. Even the most dedicated gamers, those who buy seven or more titles each year, tend to stay away from buying games during the summer – only one in three did last year.
But even within a quiet market there are opportunities for both publishers and retailers.
"For retailers, this presents a clear
opportunity. Console penetration in
Britain is higher than ever before,
with 62 per cent of all households
owning one. And there is a strong
inventory of older games, which
consumers may still look to buy."
A number of industry commentators have voiced concerns that the arrival of the next-gen consoles will bring the games industry grinding to a halt. The fear that gamers will start hoarding their spending money in anticipation of the PS4 or Xbox One.
But for the many gamers there won’t be an opportunity to enjoy the new consoles until the end of this year at the earliest, meaning gamers may look to buy existing titles to tide them over until then.
For retailers, this presents a clear opportunity. Console penetration in Britain is higher than ever before, with 62 per cent of all households owning one. And there is a strong inventory of older games, which consumers may still look to buy.
Shops may want to push the message that console owners need to experience the ‘greatest hits’ for low prices, before the next generation arrives.
Summer presents publishers with an opportunity to have their moment in the spotlight.
A top-quality title which is given rave reviews can become the talking point of the entire games market for months. Take Batman Arkham Asylum as an example. The action title launched in August 2009 and received top reviews from critics. As a result it became the seventh bestselling title of the year.
The Last of Us is a likely repeat contender this year. The game is the only strong release in what looks like an uninspiring summer period.
This year’s releases have every chance of performing well and will demonstrate why a summer launch can be beneficial under the right circumstances. And the more that these success stories happen, the less publishers will avoid releasing quality titles at this time of year.
With any luck, successful summer launches will become an annual event and help boost the market when it needs it most.

Total UK retail sales climbed 3.9 per cent year-on-year in July, against a two per cent rise in July 2012 - the fastest growth in the month since 2006.
Like-for-like sales rose 2.2 per cent over July 2012, according to the latest data from the BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor. Online sales increased 7.9 per cent year-on-year.
Helen Dickinson, Director General at the British Retail Consortium, said: "This is a very solid sales performance, the second best month this year and better than we've seen in any July since 2006. It has been driven by the warm weather and retailers working hard to offer deep discounts and great offers to their customers, with the reduction in shop prices we reported for July translating into more generous spending in UK stores.
"Food has performed very strongly, with summer barbecue ingredients and feel-good foods doing well during a month where the Lions, Murray, Chris Froome in the Tour de France and the start of the Ashes series all contributed to the positive summer feeling. Clothing has also had a very good month, which was down to good weather spurring summer fashion buys and some very good discounting.
"While we know that the picture is still variable and the High Street in particular continues to face considerable challenges, these positive results will be welcomed in town centres around the country that depend so much on retailers performing well."
David McCorquodale, Head of Retail at KPMG, added: "July was a golden month for retail sales and marks a return to form for British retailers. Hopefully this uptick in sales is another indication that the UK economy has turned the corner towards growth. Murray mania, summer sun and the arrival of the royal baby gave consumers that much needed feel good factor, encouraging them to leave caution behind and help retailers put in a champion performance.
"Sales of food and drink soared as consumers popped open the bubbly and held barbecues to celebrate the royal family's newest arrival, Murray's Wimbledon triumph and the warm delights of summer.
"With autumn ranges now hitting the shelves, retailers need some cooler weather to encourage consumers to treat themselves to some new winter woollies. If they get these new ranges right and suitable weather, it could be game, set and match."

Ubisoft Toronto head says big-budget devs should investigate new business models, improve efficiency, invest in tools
[h=3]Ubisoft Toronto[/h]
Ubisoft Toronto studio head Jade Raymond thinks there's still innovation in the AAA space, but sees it threatened in the future by the continually rising costs of development. In the lead up to this month's launch of Ubisoft Toronto's debut Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Raymond shared her concerns with Digital Spy.
"I think the big question to me, as the expectations of these big triple-As keep on growing and the consoles become more powerful and teams get bigger, is how do we keep the costs in line," Raymond said. "That's for sure one of the things that is going to stifle innovation eventually. Anytime you want to make a big triple-A, you're spending, let's say $100 million, you're not going to want to take a chance. It's got to be, I'm making the next Call of Duty or the Assassin's Creed and I know it's going to make 'X' amount, so we'll make money. I think that's the tougher thing."
Her solution for maintaining innovation in the AAA space is a two-pronged approach. First, bring development costs down.
"I think it depends on what type of game you're making, but all games I think we have to invest in tools to make people more efficient, to perhaps make 10 times the amount of content that we were making before with the same amount of effort," Raymond said. "That's the only way we're going to keep up. So there has to be a big investment there."
Next, investigate some alternative business models.
"The reality is the industry is changing, the way people are consuming games is changing, the expectations are changing," Raymond said. "More stuff is online. What does that mean? There are some games like The Walking Dead which are starting to have interesting episodic [content], but that doesn't apply to all games. What's the business model that makes sense to you? What's going on with free-to-play, what does that mean for the console market?"
Raymond name-checked Team Fortress 2 as one particularly effective treatment of the free-to-play business model. The game's microtransaction hats don't impact competitive balance, and Valve's decision to let players create and sell their own hats has made it so people in the community are making money off the game as well.
"I think that's a great business model to investigate for some games," Raymond said.

The English Football Association and Sony have joined forces for what is to be called the PlayStation Schools’ Cup.
Over 2,000 schools and 100,000 kids across England will a host of tournaments for the U12-U15 age categories that will be run between September and May.
Tottenham Hotspur captain Michael Dawson will be the face of the campaign.
Each participating school will receive a PlayStation Kit Bag that includes a football, training bibs and supporters flags. An e-reporter competition will be run in tandem where budding journalists can submit match reports online.
The final will take place at the PlayStation Schools’ Cup Festival in May 2014.
“I still had fond memories representing my school at sport,” Michael Dawson stated. “The PlayStation Schools’ Cup tournaments will provide an important learning curve, where youngsters can test themselves against quality opposition, playing under competitive circumstances.
“The main thing is that they go out and enjoy their football. I urge all kids to get out there and give it a go.”
PlayStation UK MD Murray Pannell added: "We are delighted to partner with the ESFA to deliver the PlayStation Schools’ Cup tournaments to close to 2,000 schools.
“PlayStation has a great tradition for supporting schools’ football. We recognised that working with the ESFA would help increase the number of schools that benefit from our support. It was important for us that both boys and girls teams from ranging abilities will enjoy the honour of representing their school, which is a proud occasion for them to cherish.”

Crysis developer Crytek has warned users that their personal details may have been accessed in a website breach.
The studio took four of its websites offline over the weekend – Crytek.com, MyCrysis.com, Crydev.net and MyCryenginge.com. Each carried the following message:
"We recently became aware of suspicious activity relating to some of Crytek's websites, and acted quickly to take those websites offline for security reasons.”
The developer subsequently said in a statement issued toEurogamer that users’ personal data may have been compromised.
"Our Crytek.com, Mycryengine.com, Crydev.net and MyCrysis.com sites were all subject to a security breach that may have resulted in some users' login data being compromised," a Crytek spokesperson stated.
"Although it is uncertain whether the incident led to the copying and decryption of email addresses and passwords, it is possible that users with accounts at these websites have had personal data copied. On Friday afternoon we started to contact all affected users via email and informed them of the potential security breach.
“We're currently doing everything in our power to ensure our sites and, more importantly, our users, are not affected by such issues in future.
"Once again, we would like to offer our sincere apologies to everyone affected by this incident, and thank our users for the level of understanding they have shown."

Ridge Racer: Unbounded, Bugbear’s bold reinvention of Namco’s racing series, was about taking chances. The world was disposable and destructible; the vehicles blunt, unglamorous instruments to be used to smash, crash and crush your way to victory and unlock the next set of stages. It was rough, rugged and understandably divisive, abandoning the brand’s established core pillars of smooth racing lines, sunset vistas and a forgiving learning curve. It was also divisive due to a lack of user-friendliness. Menus were bare bones, tutorials practically non-existent and the rules of the road – destroy scenery to fill the boost bar required to obliterate shortcuts – encouraged aggression and rewarded recklessness.Remixing and retro-fitting Unbounded as a free-to-play game – whose business model is all about accessibility and monetised customisations – can’t have been an easy task for Bugbear, then, and the pervading sense during our time in the closed beta is that Driftopia currently compromises what went before to cater to its new monetisation methods. The aim is still the same – earn points through victory, this time against other players’ ghosts, to unlock new stages – but there are tweaks to the Unbounded formula that muzzle its old bite. For a start, shortcuts no longer need boost to blast through; you’re free to smash through them as a means to generate boost rather than using them only as an avenue to expend it. And there’s now a garage and repair system that requires you to purchase new vehicles and upgrade them with randomly awarded perks such as more powerful boosts, greater airtime and more points for drifting.

After months of speculation since Matt Smith announced that he was exiting the long-running British SF show Doctor Who, the BBC has announced the latest actor who will be taking on the titular role. In a live television announcement, with several previous stars on hand, it was revealed that Peter Capaldi will be portraying the newest incarnation of The Doctor. Capaldi is 55 years old, ending a recent trend towards younger Doctors, and had been flagged by bookmakers as the odd-on favourite in recent days, to the extent that they had suspended betting on the issue. He is best known for his role as the foul-mouthed government bureaucrat Malcolm Tucker on the The Thick Of It and has in fact showed up on Doctor Who previously as a guest star. But now Capaldi is set to take his place in the iconic lead role. To help celebrate the 50th anniversary, and the naming of the next Dr. Who, an ice cream shop put up a 35ft straw Dalek sculpture."
