GameCity has launched a new award for videogames, the GameCity Prize, which it hopes will be the " Turner / Booker / Mercury Prize" of the industry.
"I'm bored of the debate of whether games are 'art' or not - the question isn't 'if' they're interesting, but 'how' and 'why'," explained GameCity director Iain Simons.
"The GameCity Prize is about videogames gaining cultural confidence and expressing their value in something other than financial terms. If games are worth almost £3 billion a year in the UK - then surely they're worth thinking about too."
Portal 2, Limbo and Minecraft are among the finalists that will be judged by a panel made up of specialists from fields out the industry. Writer and comedian Charlie Higson, Tom Watson MP, Blur's Dave Rowntree and actress Frances Barber are all part of the jury.
"I'm not a huge video game player - yet - but as an artist I'm very interested in all forms of cultural expression," said Barber.
"I'm thrilled to have this opportunity in the GameCity Prize to discover what the World of videogames might hold for me, what kind of worlds, characters and emotions they can create. I can't wait to start playing."
The GameCity Prize award ceremony will take place on October 29 in Nottingham, the final day of theGameCity Festival.

Figures reported by Screen Digest show that subscriber revenue from online games fell in 2010, a first for the industry.
"The 2010 decline in subscription revenue - the first annual contraction experienced by the market since our coverage of this segment started in 2002 - represents an inflection point for the industry," said Piers Harding‐Rolls, senior analyst.
In 2010 online multiplayer games generated $1.53 billion in North America and Europe, a fall of five per cent from $1.66 billion in 2009.
Screen Digest predicts a long term drop in subscriptions, falling to $1.33 billion by 2015.
"The focus of many PC game operators has clearly shifted to microtransaction‐based models - in part due to competition in the subscription market especially in the high‐end MMOG segment, but also because of the flexibility microtransactions offer operators in monetising gamers."
Microtransactions in the same global regions rose by 24.2 per cent, from $909 million to $1.13 billion in 2010.
Total revenue among Western online multiplayer games, including subscriptions and microtransactions rose by 5.3 per cent, from $2.57 billion to $2.7 billion for the same period.
Screen Digest forecasts microtransaction revenue to continue upwards reaching $1.8 billion by 2015.
The study also distinguishes between MMOGs, massively multiplayer online games like World Of Warcraft, and MOGs, non‐massive multiplayer online games like Moshi Monsters.
"MOGs continue to rise in popularity with operators because they can cover a wider range of game genres than MMOGs, are generally less expensive to produce than full‐blown MMOGs and are also being increasingly successfully monetised by the industry," said Harding‐Rolls.

It seems like the folks at Razer are taking the company's "for gamers, by gamers" motto to heart, today unveiling a new customizable PC / Xbox 360 arcade stick at Tokyo Game Show that won't even hit production until the fightstick community disassembles, mods, and judges the heck out of it. The yet-to-be-named arcade controller will first make its way to select applicants of a closed beta program, putting the rig in the hands of some 200-plus gamers who, after having their way with it, will provide the outfit with tips on how to fine-tune the final product.
Razer's TGS staff gave us a brief overview of the unit, and let us swap around wires, pop out buttons, and fiddle with the rig's faceplate. The prototype unit is built with Sanwa Denshi components, but Razer tells us that mod-minded gamers are free replace, modify, or otherwise tinker with any of the controller's major parts without fear of voiding its warranty -- only the stick's control board is off limits. Beta registration is already open, and the first test units should ship out sometime next month. Check out the gallery below for an eyeful, or point your peepers up top for a demo straight from the TGS show floor. Want more text? Hit the break for an official press release.

BAFTA has joined forces with the University of Abertay in Dundee to launch the Games Unpacked tool, a Unity based engine that allows children to make their own games.
"Every young person I know absolutely loves playing games, and Games Unpacked is a fun and easy way to take the next step into making their own games," said Paul Durrant, director of business development at Abertay University.
"By creating a simple 'digital toolbox' of all the elements of a game level, children of any age can build a brand new game and start learning about the fascinating process of games development."
EA and NESTA have also supported the project, which runs alongside the BAFTA Young Game Designers competition.
"Games Unpacked is an additional offering on the BAFTA Young Game Designers website, and we look forward to seeing how visitors engage with the package," said Niyi Akeju, BAFTA producer.
The tool was recently on show at the Dare ProtoPlay games festival in Dundee.

Game industry market research and analysis firm Newzoo has released new data showing burgeoning game markets in Brazil, Mexico and Russia. The data was collected by polling gamers local to each territory and shows parallels with more established sectors.
Mexico
Newzoo's reports claim that Mexico's 16 million active gamers' preferences and spending behaviour is highly comparable to that found in North America. 57 per cent of players spend money on games, a share higher than most western countries.
69 per cent of the total consumer spend in the region goes to console and PC or Mac games, equating to $825 million last year. Direct downloads, both on PC and console, are popular accounting for $155 million and $60 million of the total spend respectively.
60 per cent of gamers time is spent on online or mobile games and MMOG revenues from the region are expected to reach $115 million this year.
“Time and money spent on games in Mexico is much more in line with western countries than other so-called 'emerging' markets, such as Brazil and Russia," says Newzoo CEO and co-founder Peter Warman. "Together with the fast-rising internet penetration, Mexico will certainly show strong growth. Good news for the local Mexican games industry as well as Western and Asian companies seeking expansion."
Follow this link for a detailed infographic on Mexican gamers' behaviours.
Russia
Russia's emerging market, which totals 38 million players (a number higher than either the UK or Germany, and one split evenly between male and female gamers), sees consumer spend from more than half of those people.
Consoles take a back seat to PC games, which bring in $570 million, and MMOGs, which gross $270 million. Despite 75 per cent of PC and console players choosing to download free illegal copies, boxed revenues remain surprisingly high.
A whopping 48 per cent of Russian gamers' time is spent on social, mobile and casual games.
“Russia is a market different from any other Western or so-called “emerging” market such as Brazil," says Warman. "Although Russians share the passion for PC and MMO gaming with Germans, preferences and spending behaviour is different. With half of all gamers being female (49%), Russia also boasts a very successful casual market and industry. Russia might be the most game-crazy country of all.”
Follow this link for a detailed infographic on Russian gamers' behaviours.
Brazil
Free-to-play social, mobile and MMO games are propelling Brazil's gamers to an expected consumer spend of $2 billion in 2011. The majority of that revenue is spent online or through mobile devices, showing a markedly different market from Russia and Mexico.
MMOGs pull in around $320 million, while mobile payments account for $180 million.
It's not all online, though, and boxed console and PC games take 34 per cent of total spending. However, a considerable portion of that spend is directed towards second-hand sales and illegal copies, skewing the picture somewhat. Three quarters of console and PC gamers report that they go down one of these two routes for their games.
But despite the heavy used sales and piracy, Brazilians spend an identical amount on download games as they do on boxed PC and Mac games: $300 million each.
“In a way Brazil is leading Western countries when it comes to the popularity of new game platforms and business models," says Warman. "We should seriously reconsider calling Brazil an 'Emerging' games market.”

A columnist for Slate asks why there aren't any civilians in today's military shooting games. Quoting: 'Mostly, they don't want to face the consequences of players' bad behavior. In an interview with the website Rock Paper Shotgun, Battlefield 3's executive producer Patrick Bach explained that he doesn't "want to see videos on the Internet where people shoot civilians. That's something I will sanitize by removing that feature from the game." Bach believes that video games are serious business but that players' irreverence is holding back the form. "If you put the player in front of a choice where they can do good things or bad things, they will do bad things, go [to the] dark side because people think it's cool to be naughty, they won't be caught," he said.'"(Note that there are civilians in Battlefield 3, you just can't kill them, accidentally or otherwise. Despite this, the author's point stands: "By removing civilians from the picture, developers like Bach are trying to reap the benefits of a real-life setting without grappling with the reality of collateral damage."

September 14th, 2011, 00:26 Posted By: wraggster
A new report from DFC Intelligence forecasts that sales revenue from games distributed online will surpass physical retail sales in 2013.
Global sales of online games - including PC, console, mobile and tablet online games - are expected to rise from $19.3 billion in 2010 to $37.9 billion by 2016.
"On a global basis it looks like retail delivery of physical software peaked in 2008," said DFC analyst David Cole. "We expect a slow, steady decline for physical game sales, with a steady increase for online delivery of games and new business models such as subscriptions and virtual item sales."
The rise of online games will counterbalance the decline in physical retail, driving growth in total industry value from $66 billion in 2010 to $81 billion in 2016. The key drivers of that growth will be PC games and games for smartphones and tablets.
The report also predicts that the current generation of consoles marks a peak in the popularity of physical platforms.
"The dedicated console business is still the major driver of industry growth, but we feel overall it has peaked with the current console systems," Cole adds.
In a separate report, summarised by VentureBeat, DFC forecasts growth in game advertising, rising from $3.1 billion in 2010 to $7.2 billion in 2016. Advertising spend in North America alone will double from $1 billion in 2010 to $2 billion in 2014.
"Video games have reached beyond adolescent males into a mainstream entertainment medium that touches every segment of the population," said DFC's Michael Goodman. "Despite this, advertisers continue to under utilise video games as an advertising vehicle. This is slowly changing as more games go online."
DFC expects key growth areas to be advergames and "around-game" ads - much like advertising in Facebook games. These forms of advertising will comprise 78 per cent of of the total market by 2016.

Windows 8 may be embracing touch in a big way, but Logitech now also has a little something for those looking to make their Windows 7 PC a bit more multitouch-friendly. The company's just introduced astandalone trackpad of its own, dubbed the Wireless Touchpad, which will let you use a variety of two, three of four-finger gestures to scroll, navigate and switch between applications -- or simply control a cursor, of course. To cut the cord, the device uses a Logitech Unifying USB receiver, which will also accommodate up to five other compatible devices. Look for this one to be available sometime this month for $50.

The lawsuit filled by Infinity Ward co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella against Call of Duty publisher Activision has been given an official trial date of May 7.
The former Infinity Ward bosses are suing their ex-employer for alleged unfair dismissal. The pair claim their contracts were terminated weeks before substantial Modern Warfare 2 royalty payments were due to be made.
As well as damages, West and Zampella are seeking annulment of their Activision contract, which could amazingly see them part-owning the Modern Warfare brand along with rights to make new games in the series.
Activision is counter-suing the developers, claiming that they had been secretly negotiating a deal with EA during their days at Infinity Ward. The pair have since formed new studio Respawn Entertainment and agreed a publishing deal with EA.
38 current and former Infinity Ward employees are also suing Activision over alleged unpaid bonuses and royalties for Modern Warfare 2, and their complaint has been consolidated with West's, Zampella's and EA's case against Activision.
"I'm really looking forward to having our day in Court," Zampella told Forbes.

QA and localisation firms are generating more money from social and mobile titles than triple-A boxed games.
Several companies have told MCV they have had to expand their testing teams to cope with the strong demand for social, casual and downloadable games.
“Over the last eight months or so, digital, casual and social games have been around 65 per cent of our revenue,” Testology MD Andy Robson told MCV.
“What you find is that rather than having three or four big titles a week, you’re getting anything from 10 to 15 games per week from the casual and digital side.
“I think it is really refreshing for the industry and some great companies have come from this development like Rovio and Mojang. I just think the triple-A sector has become very stagnant and the same ingenuity is not being experienced in new IPs.”
QA and testing firm VMC has altered its team structure because of the increased demand, while Universally Speaking has even hired extra teams.
“It has increased the overall number of projects we work on at any one time,” added Universally Speaking MD Vickie Peggs. “We now have additional teams dedicated to managing the smaller titles on iOS, Android and other casual and social platforms.”
Babel’s VP of sales and marketing Keith Russell said:?“This sector has gone through the roof, broadly it splits into three phases – start-ups, big first successes and seasoned players.”

Despite the common preconception that digital distribution is detrimental to the health of bricks-and-mortar retail, GameStop International executive vice president Mike Mauler thinks there's a much bigger cross-over than many commentators believe.
"Retail globablly seems to be pretty strong, especially in the game industry. No matter what the economy is, no matter what the country is, if you’ve got a good game, it does well," he tells us. "In terms of where the industry’s going with digital, free-to-play etc, I personally don’t see it as cannibalistic. You’ll see a lot of articles giving the impression that a dollar spent on digital is a dollar lost from boxed product, and that’s absolutely not the case."
"I see it really as being additive, people are still spending on boxed product, new titles are doing well. Last fall Call Of Duty, Assassin's Creed and all the big titles did better than the year before. But then on top of it there’s now a digital piece. EA and some of the other guys are starting to take those franchise and do things on Facebook or browser games, and we really see it helping the industry."
According to Mauler, GameStop intends to have digital sales account for $1.5 billion of its revenue by 2014 (it was a little under $300 million last year), and he believes many of the increasing number of people being introduced to games through online social and mobile titles are also graduating to consoles - behaviour GameStop is hoping to capitalise on with the announcement of its gaming tablet.

"I'm interested in building an arcade machine, following the footsteps of Cmdr Taco among many others. Not being all that interested in piracy, I need to find somewhere to buy games. StarROMs used to be the kind of thing I was looking for, though with an incredibly short catalog. The MAME people have a few available for free(non-commercial), but this isn't going to sate my needs. There's an entire cottage industry supporting this goal. People are ready to sell me plans, kits, buttons, joy sticks, glass marquees, and entire machines. That's fantastic, but where can I get the games? I refuse to believe that this entire industry is built on piracy.

US retail spend on games dropped to $669.9 million in August, marking a 23 percent year-on-year decline, according to market research firm NPD Group.
It's the fourth decline in as many months in a year that has only seen growth at retail twice.
NPD noted that, despite increased unit sales, hardware spend fell 12 percent year-on-year. Handhelds, however, saw growth thanks to a significant rise in 3DS sales.
Meanwhile, software sales fell 37 per cent to $285.9 million, with Deus Ex: Human Revolution topping the monthly chart.
Despite the slump, NPD remains optimistic for the remainder of 2011. Analyst Anita Frazier said: "More than half of industry sales are still to be realised in the back four months of the year. Given the strong release schedule in the coming months, new physical sales could still be flat to slightly up once full-year sales are tallied."

September 10th, 2011, 00:10 Posted By: wraggster
A few days ago, the Opposable Thumbs blog ran a piece titled, "In gaming, everything is amazing, but no one is happy." The thrust of the article is that discussion about modern games focuses almost entirely on flaws, which are often blown out of proportion. "Every game is too short, although we never finish the games we play. Every game is too expensive, although we demand ever-increasing levels of interaction, graphical fidelity, and length. The same people who claim every game was 80 hours and a masterpiece 10 years ago are 10 years away from saying that today was the golden time, once they have the distance needed to scrub the bad games from memory." Today, gaming site Rock, Paper, Shotgun offers counterpoint, saying that video games need active criticism for the industry to improve. "Everything is amazing, and sometimes people are happy. That’s how it will always be. And we should probably make the most of it, and then strive to make it better."

Ten years ago i had a day off work and was posting Dreamcast Homebrew news when on TV the news was coming through that the twin towers had been hit by planes, there was mass hysteria in the USA and UK with planes being grounded on both sides of the atlantic.
The news that day left me stunned for life, it just seemed unreal, i was in floods of tears for the loss of innocent lives lost that day, even now listening to the events of that day has me in tears.

Rockstar and Take-Two are unlikely to release the still unannounced Grand Theft Auto V before holiday 2012 at the earliest.

"With the announcement, we are increasingly convinced that we will not see the next Grand Theft Auto title until (at least) holiday 2012," he wrote in an investor note.
"We doubt that Rockstar would launch two of its titles in close proximity to each other given the studio's elaborate marketing campaigns and the likelihood that GTA could cannibalize sales from MP3 if launched in late spring."
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said last month he expects GTA V "to sell at least 18 million units" and perhaps as many as 24 million.http://www.computerandvideogames.com/318198/gta-v-latest-movement-points-to-late-2012-release-at-the-earliest-analyst/

The UK games market slipped slightly this week, down six per cent in value to £13.7m and five per cent in units to 619,538.
It may only be a slight dip, but retail would have been hoping for better – particularly with the release of Driver: San Francisco (debuting at No.2) and Bodycount (which managed 36th place).
As Driver missed out, it meant that it's a second week at No.1 for Square Enix’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution. And that's despite the fact the RPG shooter fell 46 per cent in sales.
There’s a number of games out today that will surely impact next week’s Top 40, namely Resistance 3, Dead Island, Star Fox 64 3D and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.

EA's CFO Eric Brown, speaking at the Citi 2011 Tech Conference yesterday, told listeners that the publisher's Online Pass system has brought in around $10-15 million in revenues.
The system, which is designed to rake back some revenue from customers buying second hand titles by asking them to buy a one-time code to use online features, costs users $10 for each pass.
"The revenues we derive from that haven't been dramatic," Brown told the conference, via Gamasutra. "I'd say they're in the $10-$15 million range since we initiated the program."
Brown also revealed that EA's latest large-scale social venture, The Sims Social, has been a tremendous success - becoming the third most played game on Facebook, according to EA's own statistics, which put the DAU figure at 7.8 million. That figure leaves Sims Social just 200,000 daily average users short of second placed Farmville.
"What has made [The Sims Social] a success so far is the Playfish expertise...combined with the creative excellence of the core Sims team," Brown told the audience. "Those teams work together exceptionally well."
