Research from games analyst EEDAR shows that 51 per cent of HD console owners in the US downloaded digital content for their systems in the past 12 months - up from 40 per cent in 2010 and 34 per cent in 2009.
That DLC generated more than $875 million in sales in 2011, with EEDAR estimating that figure to rise to £1 billion in 2012.
The firm estimates that 20 million consumers in North America bought DLC in the past 12 months, up from 14 million last year and 9 million in 2009.
Drivers for DLC growth include earlier release timing and quicker downloads due to faster broadband speeds.
According to respondents, reason for not downloading digital content for console games includes concerns over privacy, no returns policy, high price and enough free DLC to satisfy the user.
EEDAR suggests that converting the 49 per cent of consumers who do not download digital content into active purchasers would generate another $600 million in revenue.
EEDAR collected data from 3500 respondents in the US and Canada.

If there was any remaining doubt that FIFA is the runaway market leader in the football genre, it has just been extinguished.
Speaking to Gamerzines yesterday, EA Northern Europe boss Keith Ramsdale claimed FIFA 12 has been outselling PES 2012 by a giant margin.
"When you look at Pro Evolution Soccer versus FIFA, only five years ago in the UK PES was outselling FIFA. On its first weekend like-for-like we've just outsold PES by 25 times.
"That's a sign of the momentum and the fan base and community behind FIFA, and let's be clear, an absolutely kick-arse game. It's unbelievable."
FIFA 12 shifted 3.2 million units in its first week on sale to break sports game launch records, and topped the UK chart during its first two weeks of availability. Meanwhile, PES 2012 debuted at No.5 on the chart on Monday, three places behind its rival.
Fair play to EA, FIFA 12's brilliant, but it's still a shame to see a once mighty competitor slipping down the league sales-wise, if that is indeed the case. Here's hoping for a closer match-up when the two series next collide.

The Opposable Thumbs blog covers a 48-hour-long "game jam" at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. Twenty teams of game developers — 16 indie and four professional — compete over a weekend to build a functional game based on a few deliberately vague keywords. This article documents the brainstorming sessions and the early prototyping work. Quoting:"The teams become less talkative as midnight draws near and the individual team members all settle down into their jobs. Everybody seems determined to not let sleep take over just yet. I take a tour of some of the other teams. Badgers are being animated, leg movements first with static bodies above them. Other teams have no art yet and just use colored rectangles as they get the mechanics down. Others are still sketching beautiful concept art and coding level editors.'To move around the room is to hear random snippets of creativity and math. 'If we move the z-axis, too, we can do this thing' or 'what if we procedurally generated that object.' In this one spot, sixteen games are coming into being that weren't even concepts eight hours ago."

October 20th, 2011, 00:06 Posted By: wraggster
EA's COO Peter Moore has revealed that 5 million people are now using the publisher's Origin digital distribution platform every day.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald following an appearance at last weekend's EB Games Expo, Moore responded to a heckler who had disrupted his presentation of Origin.
"Like any piece of software, and I worked at Microsoft for enough years to say this, you launch software and continue to polish it, upgrade it, get feedback and make it better," he said.
"That's where we are with Origin. We're only four and a half months in and already over five million people are using it on a daily basis."
Moore believes that the public currently sees Origin as an unnecessary hurdle that "gets in the way" of the gaming experience, and he expects the platform's early adopters to be the last group of people to "get" what EA is trying to accomplish.
"I think in its broadest sense they think it is just EA's answer to Steam, and it is much more than that. Like any great content provider, you want to provide yourself with a platform to talk directly with your customers... That's exactly what Origin is all about."
"The console first parties understand what we are doing. I think the fans, the people that have to use it in the early going, are the ones that get it last in regards to what we are trying to do."
Moore supported Origin's social functions in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, claiming that the platform, "will absolutely become a social network."

If the thought of spending $160 on Modern Warfare 3-branded peripherals appeals then twitch your trigger fingers at Logitech's new Gaming Keyboard G105 and Laser Mouse G9X. Both are slathered in MW3 logos (so you don't forget what you've consigned yourself to for the next year) and come with some essential FPS features. The keyboard has "night-vision green" LED backlit keys, six programmable "G" keys to record macros and a game/desktop mode switch for those rare moments when you're really not meant to be MacTavish. Meanwhile, the mouse has on-the-fly adjustable DPI, up to five different player profiles, a color display and 28g (one ounce) of extra weight to adjust the mouse balance against your hand. They're both available from the Logitech website and will set you back $80 each.

Peripheral makers often give their devices preposterous names -- remember when you asked your grandparents for that Thrustmaster? Hori has outdone itself with the Tactical Assault Commander 3, which won't allow you to command any sort of tactical assault outside of your PS3. Admittedly, when you settle down in front of the TV, you'll see it's got some pretty useful features. There's adjustable mouse sensitivity and a re-mappable keyboard that remembers your settings after the PS3 powers down. You also get a dedicated walk button to slow your movement, like the gentle tilt of an analog stick. It's available starting October 24th in black or the Best Buy exclusive digital camouflage edition you see above -- but it'll cost you the same $100 whatever style you go for.

Baroness Greenfield has spoken out against the dangers of allowing to children to play video games, arguing it has negative effects on both attention span and behaviour.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Greenfield explained that she believes gaming can physically alter the human brain.
"The human brain has evolved to adapt to the environment. It therefore follows that if the environment is changing, it will have an impact on your brain," she argued.
"If you play computer games to the exclusion of other things this will create a new environment that will have new effects ... every hour you spend in front of a screen is an hour not spent climbing a tree or giving someone a hug."
She also suggested the audience she addressed yesterday at the opening of a new science wing at Sherbourne Girls' school go outside "to climb trees and feel the grass under your feet and the sun on your face."
In 2009 Greenfield argued that gaming could affect the pre-frontal cortex of the brain.
"You use it or lose it. And if you don't use it, you are infantilising the brain, it won't come on stream as much, that's the hypothesis."
Until last year Baroness Susan Adele Greenfield was director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, and is a member of the House Of Lords.

October 19th, 2011, 01:26 Posted By: wraggster
Australian studio KMM Brisbane has closed less than a year after opening its doors, becoming the latest developer to shut down in the region following tough economic times.
The team of around 40 was made up of a significant portion of ex-Krome Studios staff which closed last year.
"The writing has been on the wall for a long time," Jason Stark, studio director at Krome told ABC. "But it's maybe a little surprising the extent to which it has happened.
"We've all expected the industry to be shrinking - it's been bad times. It's gone from being a mild contraction to being pretty much obliterated."
Stark blamed a lack of new projects, the poor Australian dollar and tax incentives in other regions for the decline.
Since 2009, console studios such as Pandemic, EA's Visceral, Krome and Team Bondi have all closed.
Stark claimed around 90 per cent of local developers are moving overseas to places such as Canada, "where streets are paved with video game gold."
"I'm personally not a believer in subsidising industries - I believe the free market should take care of it," he added.
"But having said that, we're losing a lot of talent, and your nation quickly gets to the point where if times do come good again, we're not going to have enough experienced people here to start the companies."

UKIE will take the lead in the formation of a cross-industry coalition to implement the recommendations of the Livingstone-Hope "Next Gen" report.
The Next Gen report highlighted a lack of computer science skills in the UK, and was recently discussed by Ed Vaizey, the Minister for Culture Communications and Creative Industries, on the BBC current affairs programme Newsnight.
The Next Gen Skills coalition will be composed of organisations with an interest in improving the UK's digital industries. UKIE will announce the first supporters over the next few weeks.
"I am delighted to see a cross-industry coalition coming together to support the recommendations in 'Next Gen', particularly the teaching of more relevant computing skills within the education system," said games industry veteran Ian Livingstone, who co-authored the report.
"This is a long term project which will ultimately benefit all UK creative and digital companies. Transforming the UK into the world's leading talent hub for the games industry and all other digital industries also sends an important message to companies considering inward investment here."
Google chairman Larry Schmidt also criticised the absence of computer sciences from the UK curriculum in his recent MacTaggart lecture. Schmidt said he was "flabbergasted" that the country would "throw away its great computer heritage."

Video game developer and novelist Tim Rogers exposes the underbelly of free-to-play games that use real-world currency. They're not trying to entertain you — they're trying to get you hooked. Every minute you play is being analyzed by men in suits reeling you into a cycle of addiction so they can keep you coming for more, and hopefully opening your wallet to buy premium points here and there. To do this, they intentionally give you an hour's worth of gameplay dragged out over the course of a week to keep it on your mind, dropping coins here and there for you to pick up, and playing on your own sense of work and profit to keep you coming back.

Drawing on every gaming cliché under the sun, the UK’s leading tabloid has this morning thrown yet another spectacular accusation at video games.
This time the claim is that video games and Facebook can lead ‘lead to temporary dementia’.
Neuroscientist Baroness Greenfield “urged youngsters to turn off their computers, go outdoors and enjoy fresh air instead”, according to The Sun. In a single year kids can, according to Greenfield, spend up to 2,000 hours staring at a screen.
This, she says, “poses risks such as computer addiction”.
Even more bewilderingly, she argues that “connections in the brain "can be temporarily disabled by activities with a strong sensory content – blowing the mind – or they can be inactivated permanently by degeneration — ie. dementia".
Baroness Greenfield is Professor of Synaptic Pharmacology at Lincoln College, Oxford, as well as a member of the House of Lords.

The total US physical video game market - videogames, consoles and accessories - fell by six per cent from $1.23 billion to $1.16 billion year-on-year in September, according to new figures from research group NPD.
Despite a number of high-profile game releases, such as Gears Of War 3 and Madden NFL 12, sales of new console and PC software slid one per cent year-on-year to $653.2 million, but were up three per cent over the previous month's figures.
Meanwhile hardware and accessory sales saw more significant drops, falling nine per cent to $349 million and 14 per cent to $154.8 million respectively.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the best-selling console during the month, reaching 438,000 (45,000 less than the same month last year).

Modern Warfare 3 has its London Underground level, and now it looks like Battlefield 3 has found its point of controversy.
The game’s listing on the website of American rating’s body the ESRB says that: "In one sequence, a restrained character's throat is slit (off-screen); in another, players shoot police officers to complete a mission objective. The words 'f***' and 's***' can be heard frequently in the dialogue.”
It adds: "The frequent combat is highlighted by realistic gunfire and large explosions; characters sometimes scream and emit large splashes of blood when shot. Players can also engage in hand-to-hand combat: repeatedly punching enemies in the face; stabbing soldiers to death with knives.”
The inclusion of such an event, no matter how justified it may be by the narrative, is almost an invite to the tabloid press.
The Call of Duty series has a particularly impressive track record of courting controversy. 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 included the infamous ‘No Russian’ level in which gamers were able – though not required – to gun down innocent civilians in an airport.
Then earlier this year The Daily Mail got its knickers in a know over the revelation that a level from next month’s Modern Warfare 3 will be set in London and feature a chase scene on the London Underground.

Non-gamers are now in the minority as over half of everyone in the UK play video games, a new report has revealed.
The UK’s resident population is estimated at around 62m, and 32.9m of those say they play iPad, Android, PlayStation and Xbox games online.
The findings were published in a report called ‘Gaming Britain’ by the Internet Advertising Bureau. It also found that 82 per cent of internet users aged between eight and 65 years old play games, while most players fall into the 25 to 45 years old category.
49 per cent of gamers prefer to play puzzle and quiz games, as opposed to 23 per cent who favour first-person shooters. Plus, 51 per cent of online gamers are male and 49 per cent female.
“This new research is fascinating because it blasts many people’s preconceptions about the game-playing audience out of the water,” said Jack Wallington, head of industry programmes for the Internet Advertising Bureau.
“It categorically proves that while very few would consider themselves an avid gamer, in fact almost 33m people do play video games and do so frequently – including eight in ten adults aged 16 to 65 years old. This makes playing games far too mainstream an activity to be classified as a niche.
“Over three quarters of players are now over the age of 24 years old and the male to female audience split is even. In fact, playing games is such an incredibly engrained behaviour within the UK that, contrary to the anti-social stereotype, games help build and maintain friendships and families.
“Over seven in ten adults have played games socially with friends, family or people they’ve just met either in person or online, while parents are three times more likely than players without children to give ‘spending time with family’ as a reason for playing games.”

GAME insists it has nothing to fear from digital retailers after backing Xbox Live, PSN and streaming service OnLive.
CEO Ian Shepherd dismissed the notion that he was giving away customers to these digital rivals by promoting them, and reiterated the firm’s strategy to become more than just a retailer.
“We’re moving away from just being a bricks and mortar retailer and into a multi-channel CRM business,” he told MCV. “Three and half million people walk into our stores every week, millions of people look at our websites, and our role is to take content and make it famous. OnLive was coming to the UK, it wanted to have its products presented to as many customers as possible, and we are a natural partner to help it do that.
“We have gone out of our way to make ourselves a friend of the digital company.”
When asked if he was worried about giving customers away to digital he said: “That is a foolhardy view for a retailer to take. You don’t hold on to your customers by not showing them the very best the games industry has to offer.
“My point about saying we are a CRM business rather an a retailer, is not that we don’t like operating stores, it is just that our role is to take content and present it to customers. And that means we have no fear of browser, mobile or casual gaming, we see those as opportunities.”
