We might not have chosen the above weird baby chick to pitch our autostereoscopic technology to the world, but at least it makes for some memorable imagery. The hatchling is a 3D image generated by projectors, overlayed on top of a real world object, which can be viewed by multiple people at multiple angles without the need for 3D glasses. Built-in sensors detect the viewer's positions and adjust the viewing angle accordingly. Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen this sort of technology -- heck, this isn't even the first time we've seen this sort of thing from Hitachi, but the company says it's continually getting better, with a marked depth resolution improvement over a technology shown off this time last year at CEATEC. The company is looking to implement the technology for both digital signage and entertainment purposes, eventually revolutionizing the way the world looks at 3D baby chickens.http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/30/hitachi-glasses-free-3d-technology-lets-you-view-weird-chicken-t/

The Independ Game Developers' Association (IGDA) is kicking off the 48 hour game-making challenge in Brisbane today as part of the Emulator event.
The event runs from 30th September through to 2nd October, and has 16 indie teams and 4 pro league teams signed on to compete to see who can create the best game in a closed environment in under 48 hours.
Judging for the event will commence at the end of the 4th of October, and will be at the Creative Industries Precinct from 4pm, and the winners will be announced at 6pm.
Truna (aka j.turner), Brisbane IGDA chapter auntie, told MCV: "It's all about the passion, jellybeans and helping each other to build a really strong Aussie game community!"
This is the fifth year the 48 hour game competition has run, and each year the teams have to make a game centred around three 'keywords'. This year, the words (as chosen by MCV's own Guy Blomberg) are 'badger', 'key', and 'suit'.
Emulator is a 10 day festival held in Brisbane, which is run by Bleeding Heart and used to contribute funds to the Starlight Foundation charity.

September 30th, 2011, 23:40 Posted By: wraggster
The UK games retail market generated £27.7m last week, a 136 per cent rise week-on-week and the second highest number this year.
Over 900,000 software units were sold last week, up 75 per cent over the seven days before.
It’s amazing what two games can do. The market was driven largely by Gears of War 3, comfortably the biggest seller of the week. F1 2011 also performed well, but had to settle for No.2.
The other big launch of last week was streaming service OnLive. There were special offers running for over 100 games on the platform, but these sales are not included in this week’s figures.
Can the market grow again next week? Retail and EA will expect it to, what with the arrival today of the UK’s second most popular game franchise – FIFA.

You may never get the chance to join Ferrari's Formula 1 team, but indulging your imagination is about to get a lot easier, now that Thrustmaster has unveiled its new Ferrari F1 Wheel Add-On -- a life-sized replica of the wheel you'd find within the 150° Italia. Announced yesterday, this rubber-textured wheel features a full slate of professional-grade rotary knobs, switches and action buttons -- including two rotary encoder switches, eight push-buttons and a set of "push and pull" sequential shifters that, true to form, are attached directly to the wheel face. Designed to seamlessly attach to your T500 RS, the accessory will be available in two models: a PC- and PS3-compatible mode, with 13 action buttons and three D-Pads, or an advanced PC-compatible mode, with 25 action buttons and one D-Pad. No mention, however, of that And if you look in the upper left corner, you'll even find your very own boost button. The Add-On is slated to start shipping in early October for $200, so buckle up and steer past the break for more details, in the full PR.

[Andy] came across this guitar midi controller project from way back and decided to send us a tip about it. The English version, translated from the original Russian, is easy to follow and documents the build process from first prototypes to the version you see above. It can connect via a standard MIDI cable and then be used to control anything you want. The only thing missing is the ability to transmit velocity data, but that’s certainly not a deal breaker.
The device has two sensory parts. The first is a set of pickups that can be seen underneath the strings near the bridge. These work like standard magnetic pickups but instead of extrapolating fret data from the pitch picked up on the string, there is a second sensor mechanism for every fret of each string. Since the strings are made of metal, it’s possible to detect which fret is depressed based on continuity sensing. Of course this means you need a conductor between every fret, and that’s why the fingerboard has been replaced with one made of printed circuit boards. All of this data is gathered, then sent to the MIDI device via a PIC 16F74 microcontroller.
If this leaves you wanting for more guitar hacks, don’t miss this one that adds addressable LEDs in between each fret.

September 29th, 2011, 23:31 Posted By: wraggster
Christmas came early for UK retail last week: physical game sales rose to its highest point since the first week of the year.
UK stores generated £27.7m from game sales for the seven days ending September 24th, 136 per cent up over the week before.
Renewed market momentum came thanks to the concluding part in Microsoft’s smash hit Gears of War series. Gears of War 3 enjoyed the biggest launch sales of any game this year. It’s the seventh largest launch for an Xbox 360 game.
“Gears of War 3, the biggest console exclusive of the year, has got off to a flying start,” Xbox director Stephen McGill told MCV.
“Xbox 360, without doubt, continues to be home for the best triple-A games.”
The market’s recovery wasn’t all down to Gears of War, Codemasters F1 2011 also contributed a chunk of revenue to the sector.

FIFA 12 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. If you’re looking for cut-price deals on triple-A games on the High Street this Q4, you need look no further.
But it’s EA’s turn first, with the release of FIFA 12 in the UK at midnight tonight.
Tesco appears to be leading the supermarket war with a tasty £25 offer for anyone who also purchases a chart title, PSN card or Xbox Live membership.
Sainsbury’s has a slightly more flexible offer. FIFA 12 can be had for just £28.99 as long as an additional £30 is spent on anything else in store. Morrisons has gone for a £30 plus chart game offer.
Asda seems to be skipping the circus this year with a straight-up £38.97 in-store and online price. Alternatively, the game is bundled free with any Xbox 360 250GB console purchase at £190.
On the High Street, HMV is selling the game for just £1.99 to anyone who trades in a copy of Codemasters racer F1 2011. And come October 7th those who buy FIFA 12 will be able to trade it in and grab a copy of RAGE for £1.99.
GAME is offering an extra 2- per cent on any games traded in against the purchase of FIFA 12.
Online, ShopTo.net is charging £37.85 for the standard edition SKU. Zavvi’s cost is £39.85 while Amazon’s in £39.99. Play.com has gone for an unusually high £42.89 and GameStop has gone for £39.97.
Note, of course, that this year’s FIFA has a premium £54.99 RRP.

September 29th, 2011, 01:02 Posted By: wraggster
Players of the browser game Planet Hunters have helped in the discovery of two possible new planets outside Earth's solar system.
Since its launch 2009, Nasa's Kepler space telescope has been taking images every thirty seconds of a group of over 150,000 stars near the Cygnus constellation in the hope of finding new habitable planets. It has collected far too much data for the Kepler team to sort through themselves, which is where Planet Hunters' 40,000 registered users come in.
In Planet Hunters, players discover new planets by monitoring the changing brightness of a star over time. As a planet passes in front of a star, there is a dip in the light it emits, with the extent of the dip dictated by the size of the planet.
After some four million games, players have discovered 69 possible new planets, which the Kepler team will now look into in more depth. Each user that helped discover the two planets has been named in the acknowledgements section of a report published in Monthly Notices Of The Royal Astronomical Society.
"While the human brain is exceptionally good at detecting patterns, it is impractical for a single individual to review each of the 150,000 light curves in every quarterly release of the Kepler database," the report reads.
"However, crowd-sourcing this task has appeal because human classifiers have a remarkable ability to recognise archetypes and to assemble groups of similar objects, while disregarding obvious glitches that can trip up computer algorithms."
It's a similar method to that used by Foldit, in which players use spational reasoning and puzzle-solving to recreate the structures of proteins. As we reported last week, players successfully modelled a retroviral protease which could help in the search for a cure for retroviral diseases like AIDS.

Those wishing to maximise their Forza 4 experience will want to see a brand new, officially licensed steering wheel that will launch alongside the game.
Fanatec’s CSR Wheel was constructed in conjunction with Forza developer Turn 1. It’s made from aluminium, offers force feedback via a silent belt drive and adjustment rotation between 90 and 900 degrees.
An LED display allows users to adjust an array of settings and, perhaps best of all, is also compatible both with PS3 and PC.
Consumers will have a lower price option, of course, thanks to Microsoft’s own £44.99 wireless (and baseless) racing wheel.
Forza 4 will be released in the UK on October 14th.

Development Unreal Engine 4 and technology for the next-generation of consoles now takes up the majority of Epic CEO Tim Sweeney's day.
"I spend about 60 percent of my time every day doing research work that's aimed at our next generation engine and the next generation of consoles," said Sweeney, who estimates we might see the fruits of this work in around 2014.
"This is technology that won't see the light of day until probably around 2014, but focusing on that horizon enables me to do some really cool things that just aren't practical today, but soon will be," he added.
"Some of our most productive work in the industry was on the first Unreal engine back in 1996, when I wrote a software vendor with a bunch of new features that hadn't been seen before. I feel like that's what I'm doing now on Unreal Engine 4 in exploring areas of the technology nobody else is really yet contemplating because they're still a few years away from practicality. But I see a huge amount of potential there and so it's very, very fun work."
Sweeney goes on to predict the two major innovations in gaming over the next 10 years. "Number one is achieving movie quality graphics and movie quality pixels on the screen, which mean no flicker in the visuals, no popping artifacts, no bulky character outlines on the screen at all.
"I expect I'll be actively programming at the time we've achieved full movie-quality graphics because that's really just a matter of brute force computing power and clever algorithm."
The other is all about AI. "The other area is simulation of human aspects of the game experience, simulation of gameplay characters, artificial intelligence, character dialogue and all of these other things which aren't really problems of brute force computing. They require increasingly sophisticated algorithms and simulation of human intelligence. I have no idea when those problems will be solved. I'm quite sure they won't be solved in the next ten years," Sweeney told IGN.
Epic's latest game, Gears of War 3, has enjoyed phenomenal launch-week success that's made it UK's biggest launch of 2011 so far.

Shortly after information started leaking out about the warmly-named Amazon tablet, gdgt offered up some supplementary details from sources explaining why the Fire looks an awful lot like the PlayBook. According to the anonymous informants, the thing was built using the same template as RIM's device. Apparently the product is more or less being rushed out the door to make it out in time for the holidays. It seems that there may be another pressing reason for the rush to bring the reader-friendly tablet to market -- namely a much improved second generation device, which is currently on-tap for the first quarter of next year. Why so close? Well, the newer tablet's release date has supposedly been secured for some time, while its predecessor was pushed back for various reasons. It wouldn't be the first time that Amazon launched two Kindle products months apart, with the Kindle DX arriving shortly after theKindle 2. It's not exactly the same thing, given that one device wasn't meant to replace the other, but it certainly doesn't bode well for the company's ability to schedule. There are still some questions here, of course -- even if the above is true (and that's certainly a big "if"), that doesn't mean that this second-gen tablet will hit its own mark. If it does, however, a lot of early adopters may get burned by the Fire.

Services like Call of Duty Elite will become a necessity for future blockbuster games, says Activision.
The publisher’s VP of digital Jamie Berger posits that, while Elite is currently positioned as an optional extra for consumers, social networks will one day be essential components to the biggest releases.
“We believe that a 24/7, year-round services strategy that broadens the game experience beyond just playing is going to be a necessity,” he told MCV.
“Right now, it’s an option but in three to five years, it won’t be. To support a diverse player base, you will have to have a services and ongoing content strategy. I don’t see how games are going to manage without that.
“Elite is about Call of Duty being bigger than ever five years from now and laying the groundwork for that.”
This shift has already begun, with rival EA readying the EA Sports Football Club for FIFA 12, as well as Autolog and Battlelog for Need for Speed and Battlefield 3 respectively.

A fascinating new war game in development at Australian studio Defiant Development will see gamers give up their guns and instead pick up their cameras.
Warco – short for ‘War Correspondent’ – tasks players with entering the battlefield completely unarmed aside from their camera. Once escaped from the conflict gamers must edit a video piece from the footage they captured.
The developer is working with filmmaker Robert Connolly and journalist Tony Maniaty.
"It's been a great partnership, with Tony giving the game a great grounding in the real world issues of war journalism, Robert lending his structural and cinematic eye, and Defiant helping to channel that into something that's interactive and engaging," Defiant’s Morgan Jaffit told Ars Technica.
"It offers a new perspective on a familiar theme, which enables us to use the tools and techniques of other FPS’ to build a completely different kind of narrative and experience. From a design perspective, that's what excited me."
"It's also about navigating through a morally grey world and making decisions that have human impact. It's about finding the story you want to tell, as each of our environments is filled with different story elements you can film and combine in your own ways. It's both a story telling engine and an action adventure with a new perspective."
However, as the case with any title that dares deviate from the established norm, Jaffit has admitted to some early troubles with publishers whom he hopes to get on board.
"It's a hard sell to executives to suggest an FPS with no shooting, but this is definitely the sort of game we should be making, as an industry,” he added. "We're optimistic that we'll find a way to make the project work as a commercial reality."

Social gaming is directly contributing to the global decline in console software sales, new data suggests, with masses of people playing and spending less on core systems in favour of Facebook games.
A survey of 1,400 qualified respondents shows that, contrary to popular belief, 69 per cent of social gamers have access to core platforms such as Xbox 360 and PS3.
Of that group, a third said they expect to play less on consoles as a direct result of the entertainment available on social platforms such as Facebook. Just seven per cent pledged to increase their console gaming habits.
The survey results fly in the face of the conventional wisdom that social and core audiences are factionalised with little cross-over.

Released as part of publisher Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 25th anniversary festivities, the Wii collection of the first three games in the series sold over 263,000 copies during the week ended September 18.
There were no other new entries in the top ten, Andriasang reports. Last week’s best-seller Tales Of Xillia slipped to number two, ahead of Resident Evil Revival Selection, Wii Sports Resort andEveryone's Rhythm Heaven.
Meanwhile, 3DS reclaimed the top spot on the hardware chart despite another weak showing on the software front, with just two titles making the top 20.
Sales of Nintendo’s portable jumped from 49,076 units to 58,837, helping the system leapfrog PS3, which suffered a significant week-on-week decline, from 64,786 units to 36,061.
PSP placed third with 25,122 sales and Wii fourth with 15,406. No other system topped 3,000 units.
