This may run counter to what your common sense tells you but, a new paper out of Duke and Rice University says thatditching DRM could actually reduce piracy. The study, which relied on analytical modeling, showed that while copy protection made illegally sharing content more difficult it had a significantly negative impact on legal users. In fact, the researchers say, "only the legal users pay the price and suffer from the restrictions [of DRM]." Many consumers simply choose to pirate music and movies because doing simple things, like backing up a media collection, is difficult with DRMed content. Even the most effective DRM is eventuallybroken, and fails to deter those already determined to steal. Meanwhile, abandoning these restrictions could increase competition and drive down prices (as well as remove a serious inconvenience), encouraging more people to legitimately purchase content. You can check out the November-December issue of Marketing Science for more details.

Brian Chan, a senior designer at Harmonix, has dismissed the notion that the recent decline of the rhythm genre marks it out as a fad.
In an interview with GameSetWatch, Chan argues that the innovations in franchises like Guitar Hero and Rock Band prefigured some of the trends still taking root in the wider industry.
"Harmonix was an early pioneer of the 'game-as-platform' concept and continues to set the bar for volume and consistency with respect to our DLC business," he said. "I think that we've learned important lessons from that experience that we will bring to bear in our future products."
The success of the music genre was such that, in 2008, Harmonix founders Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy were offered $300 million in performance related bonuses following Viacom's $175 million acquisition of the studio.
However, the precipitous decline in the sales of rhythm games prompted Viacom to demand that thebonus payment be returned in February 2010.
This, in turn, led to Harmonix filing suit against Viacom for unpaid bonuses in December 2010. Later in the same month, Harmonix announced that it had collaborated with private investment group Colombus Nova to buy the company back from Viacom.
Despite these complications, Chan doesn't entirely reject the claim that music games have - up to this point - been based on gimmicks; it's just that most people fail to recognise the value of gimmicks to future progress.
"Gimmicks, so-called, are really just risky moves taken in the larger narrative of innovation. They are bold and sometimes stupid, but we should applaud such risk-taking. And sometimes they are thin at the start, but many good ideas mature over time and with iteration."
As the rest of the industry catches up to the concepts Harmonix pioneered, music games will enjoy an inevitable resurgence.
"Music is a ubiquitous and inextricable part of people's lives. In addition to being a powerful medium in isolation, it tends to go with everything else. With social media and the democratisation of music software, more people are making music than ever before."
"So, if, indeed, the future is casual, trans-media, and highly monetised, then popular music, as an expressive medium and a media format, seems about as flexible and future-forward as any genre or fantasy I can think of."

Five videogames will be included in an exhibition of classic British design at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, according to the Huffington Post.
The exhibition is intended to coincide with the Olympic Games, which will take place in London next year. It is called British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern Age, and covers the period since the last time the UK hosted the Olympics.
The games chosen for the show are Elite, Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider and Little Big Planet.
"We consulted plenty of people in the gaming industry, and it was clear that Lara Croft had to be in there," said curator Ghislaine Wood. "She was the first female and the first action character."
"Lemmings was a simple game from DMA in Dundee. Grand Theft Auto, who we're still in talks with, was the first environment you could drive through, and made DMA rock stars. While Little Big Planet brings new elements like social and photography into games."
The games will be exhibited among a total of 350 examples of classic British design including Concorde and the Jaguar E-Type.
British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern Age will run from March 31 to August 12 2012 at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Ofcom is investigating ITV's mistaken use of footage from the Arma 2 videogame, presenting it as an IRA film from 1988.
According to the Guardian, the broadcasting watchdog is examining the incident to decide if it breaks broadcasting codes.
The video was presented during current affairs programme Exposure as real footage showing the IRA using weapons provided by Muammar Gaddafi.
"The events featured in Exposure: Gaddafi and the IRA were genuine but it would appear that during the editing process the correct clip of the 1988 incident was not selected and other footage was mistakenly included in the film by producers," said an ITV spokesman at the time.
"This was an unfortunate case of human error for which we apologise."

Oh hey, Sony, how nice of you to join the party! The console gaming headset party, that is (no, Bluetoothearpieces don't count). Over a year ago the company had us yearning for a PS3-oriented headset after letting loose its duo of Ultimate Weapons headgear for PC gamers. Then in May, a glimmer of hope shone upon us when its PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset was announced for the DualShock-wielding gamers -- and priced at a modest $100.
There's no doubt that this playing field's been blanketed with a saturation of wallet-tempting selections (we're looking at you MadCatz, Turtle Beach and Astro), but Sony's official kit has a few tricks up its sleeve for a potential home run. Despite the moniker, it's capable of virtual 7.1 surround sound and displays onscreen status reports exclusively when used with a PS3. We spent a few fragging-hours over PSN to hear how well we could pin-point our enemies with sound to keep the kill streaks coming. You'll find out the answer by hitting that "read more" link below.

The market value leaped 94 per cent week-on-week to £53.8m following FIFA 12's release – the biggest week for games retail so far this year.
Units are up 73 per cent to over 1.5m. FIFA 12 beat FIFA 11's launch week with 18 per cent more games sold. And retail generated 34 per cent more revenue from this year's title.
As a rare treat for UK retail, the High Street took £6.5m more cash than it managed during the corresponding week in 2010. However, slightly fewer units were sold.
The market is likely to dip next week, but it should still be a strong seven days for retail. FIFA will continue to be a big seller, while Namco's Dark Souls and Bethesda's Rage should make an impact.

[Jamie] built his own USB connected arcade controller. We’ve been seeing a lot of these lately, and they usually involve soldering buttons to a keyboard PCB. But [Jamie] decided to go a different route and use his own microcontroller. This method always gets a bit hairy when it comes to deciding how to connect it to a computer. Dealing with the USB stack used to be quite tricky, but the LUFA project is slowly taking the pain out of the process.
The Lightweight USB Framework for AVRs is an open source project that handles the hard work associated with USB capable AVR microcontrollers. [Jamie] knew that they already had a sample implementation of a hardware joystick. He’s not using one of the supported boards and so wasn’t able to just compile and go. But porting the code to work with his minimus board was simple enough. With the code in place, the physical build was quite simple. The buttons and joystick were mounted on the surface of an overturned drawer. Each is connected to one pin of the controller board and to ground. LUFA makes sure that the device enumerates as a joystick, and [Jamie] was gaming in no time.

BT Openreach is rolling out a new 'fibre to the premises' cabling network in the UK which it promises will bring internet speeds of 300Mbs to homes by 2012.
The service launched commercially this week, giving homes access 'up to' 11Mbs immediately, but the 300Mbps download service will become available in spring.
The company is also doubling the speed of 'fibre to the cabinet' services to 80Mbps.
"These are significant announcements and good news for the UK, " said DCMS minister Ed Vaizey.
"High-speed broadband is essential for economic growth, which is why we want the UK to have the best superfast broadband in Europe by 2015.
"Improving the UK's broadband infrastructure will help our high-tech, digital industries grow. It will ensure the UK is an attractive place to start-up and base the businesses of tomorrow."
Openreach chief executive Liv Garfield was keen to stress that the service would not be limited to the UK's larger towns and cities.
"No-one is keener than us to extend these super-fast speeds to rural areas and so we will be bidding for public funds to help extend these services even further," she said.
"The challenge is a tough one but by working with the public sector it is within our reach."
Until now, nearly all UK broadband packages have been sold under an agreement of maximum speed, or an 'up to' rating. Over subscription and inferior infrastructure have meant that many of these connections never reach the advertised speeds, especially at busy times.
Recently, BT teamed up with OnLive as the streaming service's UK launch partner, offering discounts and special offers to customers. Connection speed is considered to be one of the major hurdles in streaming services' path to success.

Blame it on the economy, or simply chalk it up to a better way of earning revenue, but physical distributors of new video games are beginning to feel some major heat from the scrappy competition. While this mainstay segment still comprises the bulk of sales with $1.44 billion earned in the previous quarter, the combination of digital purchases, subscriptions, downloadable content, social network and mobile games -- along with help from rentals and used purchases -- now tops $1.74 billion dollars. This news comes from the NPD Group, and while we're still scratching our heads at the logic of combining second-hand purchases with electronic distribution, it provides a strong indicator of consumers' changing tastes and preferences (along with their willingness to spend). Does this industry titan simply need a new console or another Call of Duty to maintain supremacy? Perhaps a modest uptick in GDP? Or does this signal the changing of the guard for our favorite electronic pastime?

Market research firm NPD Group has today revealed that revenue from sales of new games at retail fell behind other channels in the second quarter of 2011.
Sales of new, boxed products in the three months to June 30 totalled $1.44 billion, while revenue from other channels - including second-hand, full-game downloads, subscriptions, rentals, DLC, social and mobile - reached $1.74 billion.
With hardware sales included, the US videogame market was worth $4.5 billion during the quarter, an increase year on year of one per cent.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier said: "While the new physical retail channel still generates the majority of industry sales, our expanded research coverage allows us to assess the total consumer spend across the growing number of ways to acquire and experience gaming, including mobile apps and downloadable content.
"Through a combination of point-of-sale and consumer research tracking, The NPD Group is providing an expanded, more comprehensive measure of a dynamic and rapidly evolving game industry."

EA Sports' FIFA 12 has sold through 3.2 million units in less than one week across all console formats.
That's according to official stats from the publisher, which claims the title is the biggest video game launch of 2011.
The sell-in numbers are 23 per cent higher than last year's FIFA 11. iOS sales of the game have topped 879,000 units.
"FIFA 12 is a stunning achievement by our team at EA Canada," commented Andrew Wilson, exec VP of EA Sports.
"The massive FIFA online community has overwhelmingly connected to the new live services in the game, including EA Sports Football Club, and we intend to keep them engaged all season long as FIFA 12 follows the heartbeat of the football season."
The game was released September 27 in the US and September 30 worldwide. On October 1 it registered more than 8 million game sessions, pushing total EA Sports game sessions above 10 million.

A report from e-skills on the needs and concerns of the UK technology industry has revealed that the gaming sector appears to be struggling to find appropriate graduates - something which isn't troubling other tech areas.
All other industries rated the availability of graduates very low on the list of concerns in the report, but for the games sector it was rated as the third biggest worry.
Two thirds of companies had problems recruiting staff this year, the report claims, with most predicting an increase in demand not only for the number of skilled staff required, but also their level of skill and experience.
"The UK has always punched above its weight globally in new technologies, and the digital economy is vital to the economic growth of the country in the future," said UK industry veteran and Blitz Games CEO Phillip Oliver.
"Video games will be the primary entertainment media of the twenty first century and growth in this sector and other digital sectors will only be powered by a constant flow of fresh, talented, highly skilled technical & creative staff."
Despite those concerns, the report paints a relatively positive outlook for the nation's development and publishing companies, with two thirds of respondents predicting a stable or increasing company turnover over the next twelve months.
The report estimates there being 100 UK workplaces related to the publishing of video and computer games, from 144,000 for tech industries as a whole.

UK games retailers are missing a trick by not stocking DVD and Blu-rays, Koch has told MCV.
The firm’s words come as GAME and Gamestation announced that it will be selling Blu-ray movies alongside PS3 hardware in around 300 of its stores.
“DVDs are much more mass market than games, and thus the more outlets that sell DVDs, the more DVDs will sell,” said Koch Media UK MD Craig McNicol.
“It does not cannibalise in the way that games do and the opportunity for specialist games retailers is clear – add-on sales of entertainment product whilst the more considered purchase of the video game is mused over in-store. The synergies are obvious for distribution and games retailers.”
As a complement to its core games business, Koch sells and distributes DVDs in the UK, Germany and Italy. It had a Top Ten hit with Super in August, and there are a number of major products on the way, such as Will Ferrell flick Everything Must Go and Jessie Eisenberg movie Holy Rollers.
“Our message to the trade is support both categories as the business processes associated with each are so similar. And in Koch you have an existing partner to help you.”
GAME head of PR Neil Ashurst added: “The PS3 is now under £200 and for that price gamers are getting a great Blu-ray player as well as one of the best consoles out there. We know gamers want to make the most of their console and use all its available functions.”

FIFA 12 has sold-through 3.2 million units across all platforms since its September 27 debut, making it the biggest release in the history of sports games and the number one global videogame launch of 2011, according to preliminary internal estimates from publisher Electronic Arts.
Sell-through is thought to be up 23 per cent over last year's FIFA 11 launch. The iPhone and iPad versions of the new game have shifted 879,000 units, with the former becoming the top-grossing app for Apple’s device on 30 worldwide storefronts.
EA also said FIFA 12 is the highest-rated sports game this console generation, based on Metacritic data from October 3, when the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions held ratings of 92 and 91 respectively (both had slipped by a single point at the time of going to press).
Additionally, the company said October 1 was the busiest day for online gaming in EA Sports’ history. Fans registered more than ten million EA Sports game sessions, including almost eight million games of FIFA 12. To date, gamers have already played over 200 million minutes of FIFA 12 online.
"FIFA 12 is a stunning achievement by our team at EA Canada," said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president of EA Sports. "The massive FIFA online community has overwhelmingly connected to the new live services in the game, including EA Sports Football Club, and we intend to keep them engaged all season long as FIFA 12 follows the heartbeat of the football season."
Released for PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Wii, PS2, 3DS, PSP, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, FIFA 12 has been localised into 18 languages and is available in 51 countries.
Earlier this week, EA's football juggernaut shot straight to number on the UK all-formats software chart after recording the third-biggest domestic game launch in history, ahead of Grand Theft Auto IV and beaten only by Call Of Duty titles Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2.

October 5th, 2011, 00:17 Posted By: wraggster
Children aged between 2 and 14 have increased their spending on digital games content by 17 per cent in the past two years, according to data from the NPD Group.
For every dollar spent on entertainment, 79 cents goes to physical formats while 21 cents goes to digital formats - growth on a 2009 survey which put the split at 85 cents and 15 cents, respectively.
"Kids are not skittish to use technology that is available to them, and the convenience and instant gratification afforded by downloading content is alluring to them," commented NPD's Anita Frazier.
"The ease and short downloading times associated with music downloads means that this is often the gateway activity to downloading for kids, but the large increase in digital games acquisition over the last two years points to how this is becoming a more mainstream way of acquisition across all types of entertainment content."
Music makes up the majority of content for kids, according to the survey, at 72 per cent, followed by movies, video games, TV and books and apps. Approximately 50 per cent of the 3343 children surveyed said they had paid for their first form of digital content by the age of seven.

The Battlefield 3 Worldwide Conquest Tournament helps EA compete with Call of Duty Elite, Activision’s social service which also includes a competitive gaming element with prizes up for grabs, according to Virgin Gaming.
“We don’t view Elite as a threat,” Virgin co-founder Zachary Zeldin told MCV.
“We view it as one of the top industry leaders taking notice of what Virgin Gaming is doing and trying to implement it themselves. Which is great. We wish them nothing but success. I wouldn’t be surprised if Activision was a part of Virgin Gaming next year.
"We are very excited to see how Elite is going to do and how the community is going to receive it, are they going to view it as too hardcore? Or too expensive? It is going to be trial and error for Activision in the first year and I am excited to see it.”
The compnay says it has hit the jackpot with its official $1.6m Battlefield 3 gaming tournament.
The online competitive games specialist claims its EA deal has opened doors for them, helping the outfit score major clients such as 2K Games, THQ and Codemasters.
The company will give away some £2.6m in prizes to its members over the next 12 months. And it promised that its service can help sell DLC and keep developers’ games out of the pre-owned bins.
“When a company like EA trusts you with their $1bn IP, people see that and say ‘If EA is willing to do this then they must know something we don’t,’” said Virgin Gaming co-founder Zachary Zeldin.
“We have been teaching developers about how we can be beneficial to their game, how we are going to keep users engaged in their product more, how we can roll out DLC for them and help sell more of this extra content, or how we can keep their games out of the second-hand shelves for six months longer.
“If Battlefield has a map pack that EA wants to release, we can run a $50,000 or a $100,000 tournament specific to that map pack. So now they have to buy that map pack.
“We are helping that community evolve.”
