"In an interview with Massively, Illyriad Games developers Ben Adams and James Niesewand predict the death of Flash, the rise of HTML5, and a long-term shift away from installed games. Quoting: 'The major advantages that boxed set or download games have had over browser-based games are local storage and direct access to the graphics and audio engines. Those barriers are being smashed apart by HTML5. ... Especially for MMO game developers, I personally don't believe that developers have any real long-term choice about embarking on this path or not. Ultimately, I believe it's either browser-based or obsolescence. If you don't do it, your competitors will, and they'll be making games that work identically on more device platforms, on more browsers, on more operating systems. It's going to take a very long time to get there, though, but this change has begun now, and we firmly believe that HTML5 is the future.' With Microsoft joining the ranks of Apple and not supporting Flash in Windows 8, there's definitely a risk to Flash. But will browser-based games really replace installed games?"

The man behind the report that formed the basis of Metro’s absurd anti-gaming story this morning has slammed the paper’s reporting of it.
Of the headline claiming “Gamers ‘can’t tell real world from fantasy’”, Nottingham Trent University’s Professor Mark Griffith toldSpong: "For one thing, we never said that in our paper and for a second thing, the findings don't even hint at that.
“The press release I put out yesterday regarding this study was completely neutral, not one negative thing in there.
"The Metro, they obviously had an agenda – because all [the reporter] said was that he just wanted to know about the negative stuff. I told him that the paper was primarily positive, or at least neutral.
“He said 'I don't want to know about that, I want to know the negative stuff.' So I just went through what we did, what we found and what we are doing next."
Griffiths also criticised the reporting of the study in one of the UK’s other game-loving papers, The Daily Mail.
"I've been doing this for 25 years – you learn to take the rough with the smooth,” he admitted. “But I stand by the research.
“That paper has exactly what we said and what we didn't say. The Daily Mail had an advance copy of that paper for about 48 hours, in fact, and the journalist was reading back sections to me. So she knew what was in it, but decided to just write her own story anyway."

Adobe has predicted that over one billion smartphones and tablets will be able to play Flash content by 2015, either natively or via the company's Air conversion system.
Air is predominantly used to play Flash content on Apple devices, which prohibit the use of Flash.
The prediction comes alongside the launch of Flash 11 and Air 3, in the face of a increasing market challenge from HTML5, which allows single code builds to be used across multiple operating systems, giving developers increased options for sales with no extra development time, albeit with the cost of a slight performance hit.
Currently, 200 million smartphones and tablets are Flash enabled, with 70 per cent of browser games utilising the technology, while 98 per cent of desktop computers have Flash installed.
Far from seeing that grip on the market as reducing over the coming years, Adobe's director of product marketing, Anup Murarka, believes that his company can increase its share.
However, the developer had to ride out something of a snub from Microsoft, which decided to keep its new 'Metro' edition IE 10 browser completely plug-in free, sidelining Flash completely. Murarka doesn't see it as a setback.
"We are going to keep the pace of innovation on Flash," said the director. "Microsoft was clear that the use case for Flash is on the desktop. Flash will run just fine on the Windows desktop."

Ex-Capcom producer Keiji Inafune has said that Capcom's attempts at creating new IP at the end of the last decade failed because collaboration between Japanese and Western companies leads to each party blaming the other for mistakes, resulting in sub-standard products.
Speaking to Joystiq, the Concept founder explained that both Dark Void and Bionic Commando failed to achieve success because the disparate arms of development meant that nobody took responsibility for fixing errors.
"[It's] very, very simple: The publisher was Japanese and the developer was foreign," the Megaman creator claims. "Even inside Japan, when you work in two different companies, they always blame each other for any small mistakes, so that's pretty much what happened in those two games - blaming each other."
Inafune also claimed that he had made a conscious effort to prevent this sort of ruction when creating Dead Rising for Capcom - a game which went on to be developed by a Canadian studio.
"When I was making Dead Rising, I told my staff, 'Don't ever blame the other guys. Do your best, and just keep doing your work'." However, since leaving the publisher, Inafune says that he has heard that "it's getting back like before - blaming each other," telling Joystiq that "I'm kind of hoping that someone will come forth and say, 'Okay, I'm gonna take over from here.'"
Earlier this year, Inafune revealed that, at the end of the PlayStation 2 era, Capcom instigated a policy of making 70-80 per cent of all new titles sequels to existing franchises in order to control financial risk.
With recent forays into frsh IP having gone somewhat awry, and new iterations of Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Dead Rising all having performed well, another round of restriction on IP experimentation may well be underway.

September 20th, 2011, 00:15 Posted By: wraggster
EA may be investing heavily in digital businesses, but that doesn’t mean retail will be left out.
It’s a familiar message, but one reiterated by EA Europe head Jens Uwe Intat during an interview with MCV – and it’s all the more relevant in a year where EA bought casual online game giant PopCap, turned The Sims into a powerhouse Facebook brand, and launched new digital services such as Origin and EA Sports Season Ticket.
In fact, he told us, physical product and online services can work together to secure growth.
“For now [digital products and boxed product] are very additive,” he said. “And for the foreseeable future the journey for many consumers starts with a boxed product.
“Yes, you can also download games on PC or console, but most just want to have a physical copy, or give it away as a present – a gift is better than a voucher or a code. And impulse purchases, too, are very important.
“Over time those models might evolve, but the journey still starts with the boxed product.”
Pundits have often said making boxed products introduces more costs, hence the attractiveness of digital distribution, but Jens Uwe Intat says it’s not that simple.
“To put a boxed product into retail is creating another opportunity to buy and an opportunity for retail to sell. So the ‘value chain’ doesn’t necessarily mean you eliminate parts to get more percentage for – you have to look at the size of the pipe. And by putting boxed products out there you increase the size of the pipe and the overall market.”

Players of the online game Foldit have helped discover the structure of an enzyme that had the scientific community stumped for a decade, representing a significant step forward in attempts to cure retroviral diseases like AIDS.
The enzyme, a Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (MPMV) retroviral protease, was accurately modelled by Foldit players in just three weeks, and opens the door to development of antiretroviral drugs.Foldit makes use of players' 3D puzzle-solving abilities and competitive nature to solve problems that computers alone have been unable to do.
A report, published by the University Of Washington and crediting gamers as well as researchers, says the discovery "provides new insights for the design of antiretroviral drugs."
Firas Khatib, of the university's biochemistry lab, said: "We wanted to see if human intuition could succeed where automated methods had failed. The ingenuity of game players is a formidable force that, if properly directed, can be used to solve a wide range of scientific problems."
Foldit co-creator Seth Cooper added: "People have spational reasoning skills, something computers are not yet good at. Games provide a framework for bringing together the strengths of computers and humans.
"The results show that gaming, science and computation can be combined to make advances that were not possible before."
Foldit, a collaboration between the University Of Washington's computer science and biochemistry departments, was launched in 2008. The University says it has two further discoveries - one algorithmic, the other a brand-new protein - which it intends to publish in the near future.

Perfection is an undeniably lofty goal, but that's exactly what Shogun Bros. is striving for, with a freshly announced update to its Chameleon X-1 gaming mouse. Available in three different colors, the company's "Perfect Version" of its gamepad / mouse boasts an enhanced rubberized coating for better grip, a new layout for remote control operation and, perhaps best of all, extended battery life. Other than that, it's essentially the same device we saw way back in December, with a 5-stage adjustable 1600dpi optical sensor, a full slate of 16 buttons and force feedback support. Shogun Bros. won't be releasing this perfected peripheral until October 1st, but you can pre-order one now at Amazon, for $60. Hit up the source link to make the purchase, or slice past the break for a very succinct press release.

September 18th, 2011, 00:11 Posted By: wraggster
When Nintendo president Satoru Iwata delivered the keynote back in March at this year's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, he spoke of the "commoditization" of gaming, and the resultant devaluing of games. But given his position as head of a company leading the charge in the dedicated gaming portable market, it was difficult to see past his highly vested interests in this stance. To put it more bluntly, Iwata is a man who relies on people buying his portable console's games for $30 to $40, and thusly his ideas on the subject are tainted by his own vested interests.
But when Mega Man creator and ex-Capcom head of production Keiji Inafune feels similarly, we can't help but take note. I asked him during an interview this week at the Tokyo Game Show how he felt about Mr. Iwata's keynote, and if the Nintendo 3DS -- as well as the PlayStation Vita -- stand a chance against the rise of the Smartphone.
"I think it's very similar between cell phone cameras and professional digital cameras [DSLRs]. You don't use a Smartphone camera for an interview, and you don't use a really professional camera to take some small pictures when you're going to work," he told me, drawing a comparison between the DSLR my colleague was holding and the iPhone 4 I was recording the interview with. "I think that's the same thing that happens with game consoles as well," he continued. "If you want to play a good game, you get a PS3 or Xbox or that kind of thing. You don't stay on your iPhone or on a Smartphone game for three or five hours, nobody would do that. So I think the needs difference is happening here."

Tokyo seems to attract a more friendly and human-looking calibre of model than the likes of other shows, and that's mostly because they're not all (allegedly) part time strippers with dead looks in their eyes. Ahem.

Video games — especially violent ones — are constantly under scrutiny from parents concerned about negative effects. Now, research suggests that those worries should focus more on the player's personalityrather than the content of the games. 'If you're worried about a video game turning your son or daughter into a killer, don't worry about that,' says psychologist Patrick Markey of Villanova (Pa.) University. 'But is your kid moody, impulsive, or are they unfriendly? It's probably not the best idea to have that child play violent video games.' ... Markey found slight increases in hostility for those with certain personality traits: extremely high on neuroticism and extremely low on agreeableness and conscientiousness. ... 'We found — irrespective of violent content — the two highly competitive games produced more aggressive behavior than the two less competitive games,' [Markey said.]"

We may have two emerging, powerful handhelds and the phenomenon of smart phone gaming under the spotlight right now, but legendary PC developer Valve is turning a blind eye.
When asked if gaming on the small screen tickles the Portal-maker's fancy, write Chet Faliszek told Kotaku: "We're about people sitting on their couches or at their desks."
The message is clear - Valve does PC and console games. That's it. But Faliszek went on to clarify anyway: "We haven't forayed into that space," he said of handheld gaming.
"It's just not a space our engine has been looked at or optimized for," he added.
So no hopes of Portal (and Steam) on Vita then. Soz.
It's okay though because Vita has been dominating headlines at this week's Tokyo Game Show anyway.

It’s the best performance for the boxed games industry in the past month, with Dead Island and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine debuting at No.1 and No.2 respectively.
Driver: San Francisco continued to sell well, dropping to No.3, while new PS3 release Resistance 3 reached No.4 and Star Fox 64 3D came in at No.9.
It’s a quieter week for new games next week, ahead of the big release of Microsoft’s Gears of War 3 on Tuesday, September 20th.

The latest in Namco Bandai's Tales series, Tales Of Xillia, is the new Japanese all-formats number one.
The PlayStation 3 RPG sold over half a million units in its first week on shelves, outselling its nearest competitor, Resident Evil: Revival Selection, by almost six copies to one. Sales of PS3 hardware got a predictable boost, with almost 65,000 units sold. 3DS sales slowed slightly week on week to just over 49,000 units.
Sony's Resistance 3 makes a strong showing in its first week on sale, debuting at number three. Last week's number one, VanillaWare's Grand Knights History, slips to fifth behind Monster Hunter Portable HD, the PS3 remake of the enormously popular PSP title.

Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz at GDCE, Carl Jones, director of global business development for Crytek, voiced his concerns over the current enthusiasm for cloud gaming.
"It's maybe that the concept has come before we were ready for it as an industry," he said in an interview published today.
"We're just trying to throw things at it right now and I'm not sure if that's going to make people money. And whether or not the consumer needs it."
He agreed that OnLive and Gaikai were doing great things, but identified one very practical issue at the heart of the cloud gaming problem.
"You talk to anyone whose been in the online gaming business for the last five years and they'll tell you that server costs have not gone down," he argues.

"Because if you just take Crysis or Crysis 2, run it on the cloud, every extra gamer you add in needs a lot more processing power and that costs a lot of money."
He was hopeful for the future though, predicting games being distributed to multiple devices via the cloud, and designers coming up with new ways to use the service.
"I think what's going to happen now is that we're going to start seeing people designing games for the cloud, designing technology for the cloud and making the best use of it."
