PSP exclusive Final Fantasy Type-0 sold close to 500,000 copies in its debut week to comfortably top the Japanese software chart.
Square Enix’s title shifted 472,253 units in just four days, a figure comparable to other high profile PSP releases from the publisher.Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII sold around 470,000 units during its launch week and the original Dissidia Final Fantasy sold 500,000, Andriasang reports.
Kirby Wii and Idolmaster 2 were new chart entries at numbers two and three, shifting 137,000 and 65,000 copies respectively.
On the hardware front, 3DS sales fell from the previous week’s Mystic Pink model-driven heights to 65,000 units, but the system still outperformed its closest competitor, PSP, by more than two to one. At 25,200 units, PS3 sales more than doubled Wii’s 11,700 too.

The PlayStation 3 version of FIFA 12 sold more copies in Europe from January to September 2011 than any other game, according to GfK sales data extrapolated by Nintendo.As seen on Gamasutra, the chart, which formed part of Nintendo's recent bi-annual financial report, sees Wii Sports Resort at two, followed by Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Zumba Fitness.The US top five looked a little different. There, Just Dance 2 came out on top, followed by Pokémon White, Gears of War 3, Pokémon Black and Call of Duty: Black Ops.Over in Japan, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd was first, followed by PS3 RPG Tales of Xillia, DS franchise spin-off Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, Rhythm Heaven Fever and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.

 Mad Catz has some competition for Capcom fans' branded-controller budgets, in the form of two Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 arcade sticks from Hori's Real Arcade Pro V series.
Announced at an event in Japan, the stick features splash artwork of a bunch ofUMVC3 characters, and will be released in Japan on November 17. The PS3 version will sell for ¥13,800, with the Xbox version costing ¥2,000 more.
Both the Hori RAP V series and the Mad Catz Tournament Edition S sticks feature genuine Sanwa internals, so the choice of whether to import one of these or a Mad Catz stick is basically personal. Do you want the lighter Hori stick, with a panel made to closely resemble a Vewlix arcade cabinet, or the more easily moddable FightStick? If that's too fiddly a distinction, of course there's always the distinction of "which stick looks nicer to you."

After seeing a writeup online that demonstrated how to build an “Emergency Party Button”, [spikec] knew that he had to have one of his own. He happened to have a USAF B-8 stick grip from an A-10A aircraft laying around, and figured it would be perfect for controlling the A/V system in his basement.
The control stick was mounted to the top of a cheap cigar humidor, and crammed full of any electronic component he could get his hands on. It contains not one, but two Arduinos. The first is tasked with reading the flight stick’s inputs and the IR control of his various appliances, while another triggers the overhead lighting in his bar along with the X10 controlled Emergency Party System. He contemplated combining all of the functionality into one device, but splitting the tasks in two was easier for this self-declared electronics novice.
The various buttons on the control stick can be used to power all of his A/V appliances on and off, control volume levels, and select which songs stream from his digital jukebox. If the action ever starts to wind down, a quick turn of his “arming” key and the flick of a switch sends his basement into full-on party mode, which includes more lighting and lasers than any one person should be allowed to own.
[spikec] says that his wife’s eyes were rolling like “uncaged gyros” when he unveiled his controller for the first time – a sign of a job well done. Don’t take our word for it though, check out a video of his control stick and Emergency Party System in action after the jump.

The boxed retail model is no longer viable for the development community, according to Playdead boss Dino Patti.
Speaking to our sister site Eurogamer.net, Patti suggested physical distribution is outdated, and he hopes that future consoles will take download models much further than current offerings on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.
"The retail model has always been and still is broken, from a developer's point of view," said Patti.
"Driving discs in a big van all over the world is really inefficient. I don't understand how anyone can make money out of this. Driving a truck to Japan just to get it delivered to people when they can get it from the net? Hopefully the new consoles will embrace the download space even more."
Playdead's Limbo was a smash hit on Xbox Live Arcade, before being ported to PlayStation Network and PC this year.
Consumers have shown they are embracing downloadable games and content, but recent demands for console players to install games before playing is a step back, according to Patti.
"There will be discs for a long time from now, but the world has adopted download. When your mum and dad start to download things, that's when it's everybody who does it.
"I only buy the disc if I want a console game, but everything else I download from Steam. And all the new games today also need to be installed. Why did I get a console if the games need to be installed? That really sucks. That's a PC," he added.

A new study by Common Sense Media shows that 17 per cent of children aged between 5 and 8 years old play games everyday, while 81 per cent have played games during their lifetime.
For the wider age range of birth to eight year olds, that figure dropped to around half, at 51 per cent.
74 percent of children's screen time is still television based, compared to 10 percent with video games and 13 percent at a home computer.
The study, which surveyed 1,384 parents in the US, also saw a difference in the habits of boys and girls.
"Boys are more likely to have ever played a console video game than girls are (56% vs. 46%), to have a video game player in their bedroom (14% vs. 7%), and to play console video games every day (14% vs. 5%)"
67 per cent of those children in the survey had a console at home, with 24 per cent having their own gaming handheld, and 29 per cent have some sort of educational gaming device.
The survey was conducted by Knowledge Networks for Common Sense Media, and too place between May 27 and June 15 this year. The questions were offered in both English and Spanish, and the full study is available here.

EA's Battlefield 3 charged straight to the top of the week's charts, pushing Batman: Arkham City and and FIFA 12 to the second and third spots respectively.
The launch was the ninth biggest all formats week one seller by revenue, and tenth by units. It's also outsold last year's Medal Of Honor at a ratio of two to one for week one sales.
Otherwise it was a quiet week for new entries, with Kinect Sports: Season 2 debuting at 18. The week's other release, Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi, entered at 23.

Indie title Minecraft has fended off competition from Portal 2 and LIMBO to win the GameCity prize.
"We're very excited to have won the first GameCity Prize, especially since the nominees contain some of our favourite games recently," said creator Markus Persson, as known as Notch.
"It's a great honour to be compared to those games. Winning this award helps motivate us to try to make Minecraft the best game it can be."
The award, which organisers referred to as the "Turner Prize" of industry awards, was judeged by a panel that included Charlie Higson, Tom Watson MP, Dave Rowntree and actress Frances Barber are all part of the jury.
The ceremony marked the end of the GameCity 6 event on October 29.
"The GameCity Prize, like the GameCity festival, is about exploring and celebrating videogames as being at the vanguard of inclusive, contemporary creative arts," said event director Iain Simmons.
"As an invitation to everyone to explore and express their own creativity, our 2011 winner is a remarkable achievement. I'm thrilled that Minecraft is the recipient of the first GameCity Prize. "
Other nominees included ilomilo, Pokemon Black, Child of Eden, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, LIMBO and Portal 2.
The prize will return next year for GameCity 7.

[Ryan] sent in a he’s been working on. After he got his hands on a pair of DJ Hero controllers, he figured he needed to pull controller data off them.
After plugging in his two DJ Hero controllers to a breakout board, [Ryan] discovered the turntables communicate on an I2C bus. A Teensy was thrown into the mix, and work began on decoding the turntable output. [Ryan] figured out that by pulling 23 bytes from the turn table, he was left with the necessary data. Byte 20 is the state of the green, red, and blue buttons, byte 21 is the distance traveled, and byte 23 indicates clockwise or counter-clockwise. After [Ryan] figured out how to pull data off his DJ Hero controllers, the only thing left to do was build a giant Etch A Sketch on a 55 inch TV.
By the time the Etch A Sketch was completed, [Ryan] figured out that he had a gigantic rotary encoder – perfect for some classic MAME action. He started up MAME and loaded up Cameltry and Off The Wall. The DJ Hero controllers seem to work just fine, even if the hunched-over [Ryan] can’t beat the levels.

"Have you ever wanted to play a new PC game, but weren't sure where your PC falls between the minimum and recommended system requirements? I don't have a whole lot of time to game these days and with new hardware perpetually coming out and component vendors often tweaking their model numbering schemes, knowing exactly what kind of experience I'm buying for $60 can be difficult. Luckily, somebody benchmarked Battlefield 3'scampaign on a wide range of hardware configurations and detail settings. If you've purchased a system in the past few years you should be in luck. The video cards tested start with the AMD Radeon HD 4670 and Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT, and go up to the brand new Radeon HD 6990 and GeForce GTX 590. Last year, Argos, Asda and Tesco made headlines by accepting trade-ins.
For years, second-hand was the domain of the specialists – GAME’s way of coping with the aggressive pricing of online retailers and those pesky grocers.Suddenly this was under attack. Tesco would accept used games in its Extra stores, Asda rolled out ‘Buy, Play, Trade’ in 234 outlets, while Argos customers could check prices online.
Yet in the months that followed, these pre-owned offers have floundered. MCV has received numerous complaints from customers who have been unable to trade their games in because of unwilling staff. One dumbfounded consumer even told us of how he was questioned by security for bringing in a bag of games.It doesn’t sound like specialist retailers have much to worry about.
SPECIALIST?POWER
“If you look at our pre-owned business over the first six months of the year compared to last year, it is broadly the same size,” GAME CEO Ian Shepherd tells MCV.
“That’s even as we have seen the rest of the market go down, so pre-owned as a proportion of our business has increased to just over 30 per cent for the first six months of this year. And that’s despite the noise from the competition.
“A measure of just how resilient our pre-owned business is that the margin has gone up during the first six months. And that tells you it is very difficult to do trade-in well. We have been doing it for a long time, and we have a lot of skills and expertise.”
But this doesn’t mean the generalists have had no effect on the pre-owned sector, as the editor of used game bible Game Guide,
Chris Ratcliff explains: “Non-specialist activity in the used games market has had an impact, if only to publicise the culture of trading-in games. “There is a general atmosphere that this experiment has faltered and watching the supermarkets over the last 12 months, I get the impression that their foray into used games was more about the headlines than the service.”
NOT GIVING UP
Earlier this year Tesco admitted to MCV that its pre-owned offer “had yet to take off” and that it needed to improve the interaction between staff and the customer.
Asda says its main focus for now is on new games, but that pre-owned remains a small but important part of its business.Why have they found it so hard?
“Poor databases, infrequent maintenance of used pricing and an absence of monitoring and comparing their trade-in and re-sale prices against a rapidly changing market,” lists Ratcliff.
“Generally, supermarkets’ used games shelves are stale with haphazard pricing. I have seen used games up to twice the price of the new one on an adjacent shelf.”
So has this been one big failure for the generalists? No, at least the grocers don’t think so. In reality these retail giants have barely got started in pre-owned. Asda and Tesco both say the ability to trade-in is something customers want, and so they will offer it. There just needs to be a few changes if they want to compete with the specialists, Ratcliff adds.
“With modern technology, centralised systems and good pricing information, non-specialist staff can easily update prices.“I see no evidence of similar systems in use at supermarkets.”
It’s too early to dismiss the generalists’ push into pre-owned. The growth of supermarkets in games over the past two years only highlights what these talented teams can do given time.
But as it stands, GAME, HMV and indies have little to worry about. For the time being at least.

Publisher EA has countered the belief that digital will eventually cannibalise the packaged games market.
The evidence, EA’s boss claims, comes from its FIFA series. FIFA has been a cornerstone of the console market for nearly 20 years but has in recent times expanded onto new platform such as iOS and Facebook.
Yet this year’s FIFA 12 has been the series’ fastest selling boxed instalment yet.
“The telemetry data is pretty clear. When we extend our brands in the new platforms, we actually create more users for our packaged goods games,” he told investors.
“So it's actually a very virtuous cycle that drives frankly a stronger brand and a stronger revenue opportunity. And without putting too sharp a point on it, FIFA's development costs have not been escalated in line with this type of growth in revenue opportunities so it's a margin expander.”
It’s a healthy cycle for all markets, of course. More boxed sales means more consumers for the digital side of the business.
“We're seeing over 2m people now already engaged in FIFA Ultimate Team. I think it's fair to say when I look at the projection going forward, we could get as much as 25 per cent more digital revenue on top of the core packaged goods business,” EA COO Peter Moore added.
“Last year, we did over $100m with Ultimate Team, which was FIFA 10 and FIFA 11 combined. So as I said in the statement it's already at $13m, I think approximately 25 per cent on a go forward run rate feels like a good figure for me.”

French publisher Ubisoft clearly sees 2012 as being a huge year for digital games sales, unveiling a huge number of new digital games at a US trade event yesterday.
Several Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network titles were announced which the firm hopes will build on the success of 2011 hits such as From Dust, Outland and Beyond Good & Evil HD.
God-game Babel Rising sees players assuming the role of none other than God, who is tasked with preventing humans from building the Tower of Babel. It will support 3D visuals as well as Kinect and Move functionality.
Also announced is a brand new ATV-style racer from Dead Island developer Techland, which for the time being is going under the codename Project Haste.
I Am Alive and Shoot Many Robots are also slated for a release next year.
A host of the Ubisoft’s triple-A brands are making the move to iOS, too. Michael Jackson: The Experience and Tom Clancy: Ghost Recon are both heading to Apple’s platform, while there will also be new titles in the Assassin’s Creed, Rabbids and Prince of Persia franchises.
“Continued advancements in mobile phones and tablets are bringing new audiences to gaming, and Ubisoft has the well-known brands and experience as an innovator on new platforms to bring quality games to mobile customers,” VP of digital publishing Chris Early stated.
“We’re excited to directly bring Ubisoft’s well-known brands and quality games to these players.”
As if that weren’t enough, Ubisoft also has three Facebook games in the works based on the CSI: Miami, NCIS and House IPs.

David Emery, manager of applications at the Australian Classification Branch, has warned of a two year delay before the country finally sees the much needed R18+ rating.
"There is legislation that's been put to Parliament about the changes," said David Emery in a Politics of Play debate.
"What happens next is a long process again. It's probably going to take another couple of years before you're actually going to get an R18 that you can apply for, like a conventional classification that you have today."
It was July when the Australian federal government voted to introduce the rating, and federal minister for home affairs Brendan O'Connor stated it "would only take a couple of months."
Emery disagrees, pointing out the obstacles to a a quick introduction.
"It's got to go to Parliament, then there's changes that have to be made subsequent to that - to the Classification Act - to allow for people who have had a game that has gone to the classification board and been refused classification to then be resubmitted in some form," he explained.
"There also needs to changes made to each state and territories classification act, that needs to go through the exact same process that I've just described, except on a state level. All of those things take ages, there are lots of delays."
"The answer is that it'll probably be another couple of years before we'll be able to accept an application for an R18 game."
Australia's strict rating laws, which only allows games to be classified to a MA15+ rating, and anything about that to be refused classification, have seen a number of games heavily censored or denied shelf space at all. Left 4 Dead 2 was heavily edited while Mortal Kombat was banned for its gory action.

Indie Royale, a site that offers independently developed titles in bundles, and uses an innovative pricing schemes, has just launched.
The site offers four indie titles for PCs, starting at $1.99 for the bundle, with prices increasing as more and more bundles are sold.
Consumers can also pay a higher price if they desire, knocking down the price for other users and getting them a mention of the site and helping to support the independent developers involved.
The Launch Bundle, available now, features games from Wagjet Eye Games, Noumenon Games, Extend Studio and Coffee Stain Studios.
So far the highest price paid for the bundle has been £186.11.
There are currently three days left to purchase the launch bundle, which for now is priced at £3.16. 27312 have been sold so far.
The site is the creation of the UBM TechWeb Game Network, which runs Gamasutra.com and hosts events like the Games Developers Conference.

Rockstar creative vice president Dan Houser has told Famitsu the GTA maker is intentionally avoiding developing in the FPS genre.
"We're deliberately avoiding that right now," he said, according to a 1UP translation. "It's in our DNA to avoid doing what other companies are doing.
"I suppose you could say that Max Payne 3 is something close to an FPS, but there are really unique aspects to the setting and gameplay there, too, not just in the story.
"You have to have originality in your games; you have to have some kind of interesting message. You could say that the goalpoint of Rockstar is to have the players really feel what we're trying to do."
Houser went on to say that Rockstar has "made new genres by ourselves with games like the GTA series. We didn't rely on testimonials in a business textbook to do what we've done.
"I think we succeeded precisely because we didn't concentrate on profit... If we make the sort of games we want to play, then we believe people are going to buy them."

Like an inattentive uncle, Unreal Engine 3 didn't visit this current generation of consoles until it was around a year old. But if Epic's Mark Rein has his way, Unreal Engine 4 will be right there in the birthing room to catch the Xbox 720 and PS4 from their ... electronic womb.
"I want Unreal Engine 4 to be ready far earlier than UE3 was; not a year after the consoles are released," he told Develop. "I think a year from a console's launch is perfectly fine for releasing a game, but not for releasing new tech. We need to be there day one or very early. That's my primary focus."
When asked what he wants from that next gen, Rein focused on giving developers and publishers more pricing freedom rather than pure horsepower. He wants a beefy GPU as well, but it's telling to see the acknowledgement that the next wave of consoles will be as much about how games are delivered as what they look like.

You'll be able to 8-way-run in style next year, as Mad Catz is introducing aSoulcalibur 5-themed version of its Tournament Edition FightStick, shipping for Xbox 360 and PS3 to coincide with the launch of Namco's latest. Fittingly, it's called the "Soul Edition," though it thankfully doesn't claim to take the soul of its user in exchange.
Like the Soul Edge, however, SC5's fight stick is composed of mythical, unknown parts (Mad Catz isn't telling just yet). The "Soul Edition" fight stick will launch in January 2012 alongside Soulcalibur 5, though we've yet to receive an official price.

Sales of the 3DS rose by more than a third in Japan last week following the release of the new pink model, which will launch in Europe next month.
Nintendo's handheld was the best-selling hardware of the week, selling 73,933 units compared to the previous week's 55,025, according to Media Create data passed along by Andriasang.
Namco Bandai - which Famitsu yesterday named the highest-grossing publisher in Japan in the last six months - takes the top two spots in the software chart, with PS3's Macross F Hybrid Packat number one, followed by Naruto Narutimate Impact for PSP. The publisher's games occupy half of the top ten, including the magnificently named AKB1/48 If I Loved An Idol In Guam.
Two western games make their debuts in the top ten this week:Dead Island in third, and EA's FIFA 12 at number seven.

Electronic Arts will soon start selling games made by its competitors.
The company's new Origin platform for digital distribution will offer games from Warner, THQ and Capcom with the first first games out next month.
Batman: Arkham City and Saints Row: The Third are two of the triple-A games destined for the service.
EA says having more publishers use its rival to platforms such as Steam add "to the extensive library of more than 100 EA PC games already available, and giving PC gamers even more choice for the latest and greatest gaming content on Origin".
"Since launch, we've had overwhelming support from both publishers and developers across the gaming industry, recognising Origin as an opportunity to deliver more of their great content straight to consumers across the globe," said David DeMartini, senior vice president of Origin at EA.
"We're excited to welcome Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, THQ and Capcom as the first publishers to offer their games via Origin."
The full list of games of games on offer is still to be published, however, with EA's statement saying it will offer "some" games from these partners - but this is still a first step in beefing up the Origin platform and putting pressure on market-leader Steam.
Earlier this year contract and DLC disputes saw EA games taken off Steam as the publisher and developer Valve disagreed on how content should be sold to consumers.
EA says Origin already has six million registered users - recently the service added live streaming demos, free-to-play games and cloud storage alongside traditional download and social elements.
The firm published testimonials from its three rivals-turned-partners with today's announcement:

Interactive Entertainment. "In growing our digital offerings for consumers we want to give fans increased access to critically acclaimed titles such as Batman: Arkham City."
"THQ is excited to work with Origin and to offer players another new, innovative way to experience the over-the-top fun of Saints Row: The Third," said Terri Schiek, senior vice president of publishing, Americas at THQ. "We look forward to building our relationship with the Origin team, and to continue to deliver great content for the platform."
"When we met with the EA team and discussed their long-term vision for Origin, we were excited to lend our weight to their efforts," said Christian Svensson, senior vice president at Capcom Entertainment. "We hope to expand our PC fanbase for our legendary brands on Origin."
