OC&C Strategy Consultants’ Christmas 2013 league table has named GAME and the UK’s big High Street winner.
The chain apparently boasted the largest growth of any UK retailer not only in-store but also online, Retail Weekreports.
While OC&C did note that the success story “is more generally about the wider video games market” it also credited GAME with successes relating to its loyalty card scheme, improving its supplier relationships and instilling its “by gamers, for gamers” identity with consumers.
Added the analyst: “Those who have a strong, clear, niche proposition that really resonates with the consumer are doing quite well. Many of these have been exploiting the fact that multichannel allows more of a targeted proposition to reach customers that they never used to reach that well.”

A Google Glass user was interrogated without legal counsel for a couple of hours under suspicion that he may have been recording a film in the AMC movie theater. Although the matter could have been cleared in minutes, federal agents insisted on interrogating the user for hours. So long for our constitutional freedoms."Hours of being detained that could have been avoided if they had just searched his devices (which he repeatedly suggested they do): "Eventually, after a long time somebody came with a laptop and an USB cable at which point he told me it was my last chance to come clean. I repeated for the hundredth time there is nothing to come clean about and this is a big misunderstanding so the FBI guy finally connected my Glass to the computer, downloaded all my personal photos and started going though them one by one (although they are dated and it was obvious there was nothing on my Glass that was from the time period they accused me of recording). Then they went through my phone, and 5 minutes later they concluded I had done nothing wrong." Update: 01/21 21:41 GMT by U L : The Columbus Dispatchconfirmed the story with the Department of Homeland Security. The ICE and not the FBI detained the Glass wearer, and there happened to be an MPAA task force at the theater that night, who then escalated the incident.

Earlier this week, SplashData released its annual list of the 25 most common passwords used on the Internet — and no surprise, most are so blindingly obvious it's a shock that people still rely on them to protect their data: '12345,' 'password,' 'qwerty' '11111,' and worse. There were some interesting quirks in the dataset, however. Following a massive security breach in late 2013, a large amount of Adobe users' passwords leaked onto the broader Web; many of those users based their password on either 'Adobe' or 'Photoshop,' which are terms (along with the ever-popular 'password') easily discoverable using today's hacker tools. 'Seeing passwords like "adobe123" and "photoshop" on this list offers a good reminder not to base your password on the name of the website or application you are accessing,' Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData, wrote in a statement. Slashdotters have known for years that while it's always tempting to create a password that's easy to remember — especially if you maintain profiles on multiple online services — the consequences of an attacker breaking into your accounts are potentially devastating.

Seattle-based designer Sam Matson developed a headset that tracks "gamer rage" and adjusts a custom game's difficulty to compensate for it. Dubbed "Immersion," Matson's headset uses an optical sensor that reads "minute color changes in the user's ear tissue to approximate a pulse."
Matson's prototype headset includes both audio input and output channels in addition to the heart rate monitor, relaying information via bluetooth to a hacked Xbox 360 controller. He developed a custom shooter game using Unity that ramps up the difficulty as the player's heart race increases, encouraging the player to stay cool and collected. The Immersion headset isn't a commercially available product, and it's uncertain if it ever will be, but Matson does offer a few glances at the prototype model on his website.

Rovio has let loose 2 billion copies of Angry Birds games since the series' launch in 2009 – that equals 28 percent of the world's population, for comparison's sake. Rovio CMO Peter Vesterbacka announced the number during London's Pocket Gamer Connects:
"If you look at Rovio and what we've done over four years, there are now 2 billion copies of Angry Birds out there. I thought I was super-ambitious in 2010 when I said we'll make $100 million and everyone else thought I was crazy, but it's very important people thought I was insane for saying $100 million back then."
Two hundred million people play Angry Birds each month, "the size of the Twitter audience," Vesterbacka said. Rovio reported 1.7 billion downloads in April 2013, and revenue of $195.6 million for the year. Vesterbacka noted that Rovio created 51 games before making Angry Birds, and now nine out of 10 people in both the US and China know the brand. An Angry Birds movie is due out in July 2016, produced and funded by Rovio alone.
"We're not building Angry Birds for a hundred days but for a hundred years," he said. "Mario is a great role model for anyone in games, it's been built for almost 30 years now. Hello Kitty is 40 this year and Mickey Mouse was launched in 1928 as a black-and-white cartoon, and that company is now building theme parks based on the character on every continent. We launched an iPhone game in 2009 and now 45 percent of our business comes from physical products, including drinks."
As for the competition: "Candy Crush's half a billion installs is a good start," Vesterbacka said.

Content to also be released for streaming on Panasonic’s smart TVs.
Tech company, MindGeek are in the process of developing an Android app that can be used to stream Playboy content with Google’s digital media adapter, Chromecast.
The content will also be available on Panasonic’s range of smart TVs, available in the coming months.
Google currently has not added any adult entertainment into the mix, and has only drafted in selected partners who are able to add support to their apps.
MidGeek plan to bean videos to TVs fitted with Chromecast, which is a $35 plug-in device that streams content to smart TVs via a wireless broadband connection.
Chromecast users can already access YouTube and Google Play services, along with Netflix, HBO Go, and HuluPlus – and will no doubt be looking forward to projected our favourite booby-bunnies onto their screens.

During a Steam Dev Days talk last week, Valve Research and Development leader Michael Abrash said he expects virtual reality to hit big in the coming years, and that it "could transform the entire entertainment industry," USA Today reported.
"Compelling consumer-priced VR hardware is coming, probably within two years," Abrash said. With Oculus VR leading the way, virtual reality headsets aren't anything new to those that have been watching their growth in recent years. The key words here are "compelling consumer-priced VR hardware" then, which Abrash thinks can be built to the following specs in 2015, per a slide (PDF) in his presentation: 110-degree field of vision, 95 Hz refresh rate, 1K x 1K resolution per eye, three millisecond pixel persistence and 20 millisecond latency.
Abrash said a VR headset with those specs is "doable with relatively minor tweaks of existing technology; no breakthroughs or miracles are needed, just solid engineering." In fact, Valve has built prototypes of head-mounted displays with those specifications already, and will "share what we've found with PC companies that want to develop VR hardware."
Valve has already built a working relationship with VR hardware manufacturers, working directly with Oculus VR on consumer-level virtual reality options and launched its SteamVR beta just ahead of its Steam Dev Days conference. We went hands-on with Oculus VR's latest internal prototype hardware "Crystal Cove" at CES 2014.

[John Ohno] has found what is perhaps the best possible use for steampunk goggles: framing a monocular display for a Raspberry Pi-based wearable computer. [John]‘s eventual goal for the computer is a zzstructure-based personal organizer and general notifier. We covered [John]‘s zzstructure emulator to our great delight in July 2011. Go ahead and check that out, because it’s awesome. We’ll wait here.
[John] has been interested in wearable computing for some time, but is unimpressed with Google Glass. He had read up on turning head-mounted displays into monocular devices and recognized a great opportunity when his friend gave him most of an Adafruit display. With some steampunk goggles he’d bought at an anime convention, he started on the path to becoming a Gargoyle. He encountered a few problems along the way, namely SD card fail, display output issues, and general keep-the-parts-together stuff, but came out smelling like a rose. [John] has ideas for future input additions such as simple infrared eye tracking, the addition of a chording keyboard, and implementing a motorized glove for haptic learning.
Want to make your own wearable display but have an aversion to steampunk? Check outthis homebrew solution with (mostly) 3-D printed frames. And it has servos!

Avid Hackaday reader [Matthias] told us he takes a lot of inspiration from our site. That’s quite a compliment, because his work is both inspiring and beautiful. [Matthias] wanted to build a UI using JavaFX, so he made a really nice-looking Raspberry Pi-based Internet radio. We featured his previous radio build a few months ago when he modified an old Bakelite unit.
The Mephisto III is enclosed in a handsome oak cabinet built by [Matthias]‘ father. Like his previous build, this one uses the Google Music interface to play MP3s and streams radio from the web. He also added weather and a clock, which is a nice touch. In addition to the Raspi and a USB WLAN stick, [Matthias] is using two relays. One relay powers the amplifier and the other enables the display. [Matthias] is impressed with the JavaFX API, but found that the performance of the Raspberry Pi is insufficient for smooth multithreading. He considered switching to a BeagleBone Black, but it has no component out.
If you want to be able to listen to vinyl, too, check out this killer media center. If you have lost your taste for Pi, build yourself a web radio from a tiny router.

"A California software developer dubbed an explorer by Google and a scofflaw by the California Highway Patrol appeared in court to fight over the purpose and usage of wearable electronics. Cecilia Abadie denies she was doing 80 mph in a 65 mph zone when she was pulled over by the CHP Oct. 29 of last year, but proudly admits wearing her early edition of Google's Google Glass augmented-reality goggles. She just doesn't agree with the CHP's contention that Google Glass is a television. Abadie, who works at virtual-reality sports software developer Full Swing Golf and was one of the first 'explorers' chosen by Google as early testers of Google Glass before they were released, wears the goggles for as long as 12 hours per day, using them both as a way to pull email, driving directions and other information into her view and to push pictures, Tweets, updates and other information out to professional and social networks in a process she describes as 'living in transparency.' The California Highway Patrol, unfortunately for Abadie, considered wearing Google Glass to be the same as watching television while driving. One of the two citations Abadie was given was for speeding; the other was for 'driving with a monitor visible in violation of California Vehicle Code 27602.' Fighting that perception in court is 'a big responsibility for me and also for the judge who is going to interpret a very old law compared with how fast technology is changing,' Abadie told the Associated Press for a Jan. 16 story."A court commissioner in San Diego dismissed the Google Glass ticket, saying he could find no evidence that the device was in use while Abadie was driving.

Gamer rage is a common phenomenon among people who play online, a product of the intense frustration created by stressful in-game situations and an inability to cope. It can have significant impact on the gamer's ability to play well, and to get along with others. To combat this rage and train gamers to deal with the stress, visual designer Samuel Matson of Seattle has created the Immersion project, integrating a pulse sensor tied to a Tiny Arduino with Bluetoothinto a headset to monitor the gamer's heart rate. The heart rate data is sent in real time to the gaming PC, where it is displayed in the game. Matson even created a simple FPS using the Unity game engine that varies the AI and gaming difficulty based on the user's heart rate. Using this system, the gamer is able to train themselves to recognize the stress and learn to control it, in order to make them a much more agreeable and competitive player.

Storage vendor Synology has told PCR it would like to integrate its DS Cam app for use with upcoming wearable tech Google Glass.
Users can currently access the app with a Synology NAS(network attached storage) product, which displays IP camera surveillance footage on-screen.
Synology UK MD Mike Chen would like Google Glass wearers to be able to view their surveillance feed while wearing the glasses, so for example while at work they can have a quick view of their living room, for example.
"I think wearable tech and everything that’s visual will be the next step in the game," he told PCR at the launch of Synology's DSM 5.0 OS Beta.
"I’d like to see more connectivity between devices - it’s all about sharing.
"We have DS Cam which lets you see a live view from your IP cameras. You could potentially put the Google Glasses on and view the feed from your CCTV camera using our DS Cam app. I think we would like to integrate this.
"Again – it’s about flexibility. Everybody likes to have options. It’s there if I need it, if not I have the option not to use it. Either way, it’s good to have that option."

Initially revealed just prior to E3 2012, Star Wars 1313 was to be a darker take on George Lucas' beloved space epic. Instead of cutesy ewoks and characters who clearly fit into either "good" or "evil" roles, Star Wars 1313 would have cast players as a bounty hunter stalking the crime-ridden alleyways of Coruscant. Little was revealed of the game before its development was suspendedfollowing Disney's purchase of LucasArts, but Star Wars 1313 was repeatedly described as "dark and mature" by its developers at LucasArts.
Now, a visit to the United States Patent And Trademark Office website reveals that Disney's trademark has lapsed. "Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued," reads the trademark status section, indicating that Disney made no effort to maintain its ownership of the title. While it is possible that some of the concepts seen in those early glimpses might make their way into future Star Wars games, it seems unlikely that we'll ever see Star Wars 1313 on store shelves.

Disney Infinity may have been named as a reference to its own potential revenue - The New York Times reports that Disney Interactive has sold three millionDisney Infinity Starter Packs, which include figurines of three Disney charactersand the game itself. Infinity was also the tenth best-selling game of 2013, according to data from the NPD Group.
Activision's Skylanders Swap Force, Infinity's main competition, was not one of the top 10 best-selling games of 2013, but the Skylanders series' revenue from retail sales surpassed $1.5 billion earlier this year. Consoles have received annual installments of the Skylanders franchise since its introduction withSkylanders: Spyro's Adventure.
Plans to expand Infinity's cast have resulted in new figurines for Disney'sFrozen, Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled films, with references to classic moments from past films being recreated in Infinity's Toy Box mode. With Infinity's introduction doubling Disney Interactive's fourth-quarter earnings, Infinity's play set is likely to keep expanding. Future additions might not be determined by developers though - only The Claw knows who will go and who will stay.

It's that game you like, and it's 20 percent off right now! Sales are great, aren't they? Well, The Castle Doctrine developer Jason Rohrer doesn't think so. Rohrer argued on his blog that rampant sales create a "culture of waiting," where players wait for a good sale before pulling the trigger on a game, which in turn makes launches weak and early adopters disappointed.
Take that hypothetical game from earlier. You're ready to bust out the wallet for the 20 percent off price. But wait, what if it goes down to 30 percent off? Or 40 percent? Even 50 percent? Potential buyers can wait indefinitely, which Rohrer argues hurts the developers. "Launch weeks become weak, and developers grow to depend on sales for financial survival," Rohrer posted on his blog last week. "This waiting game is likely decimating your player base and critical mass at launch by spreading new players out over time."
Rohrer also pointed out how he believes sales hurt early adopters: "To put it bluntly: sales screw your fans," Rohrer wrote. "Your fans love your games and eagerly await your next release. They want to get your game as soon as it comes out, at full price. But they are foolish to do that, because a sale is right around the corner."
To counter the culture of sales, Rohrer will be offering his own game, The Castle Doctrine, at a pricing scheme that is the "inversion" of the sales business model. The game, in alpha state, is available now for $8. When it comes to Steam on January 29, it will cost $12. One week after launch, it will rise to the full price of $16, which Rohrer wrote that it will remain forever. "Anyone feel burned by that plan?" he asks.

Released on September 17, Rockstar's acclaimed open-world titlegenerated $800 million in worldwide sales in a single day, with GTA V revenues reaching $1 billion after just three days.
By early November, GTA V was on its way to becoming the best-selling console game of all time, with about 29 million copies sold into retail. Further sales will likely come from additional DLC and the long-rumouredGTA V for PC, should it materialise.
The best-selling console game of all time (not bundled) is currently Mario Kart Wii, at 34 million units, meaning that Rockstar North has that record within reach.

Despite speculation, Steam and Half-Life house Valve is not building its very own virtual reality headset.Instead, it's working together with VR headset pioneer Oculus to "drive PC VR forward" with Oculus Rift, Valve revealed during day two of it's Steam Dev Days conference. The two companies go way back. That prototype VR headset people - a while ago - mistook for Valve's: that was Oculus Rift. Valve backed Oculus from the very start, even endorsing Rift for its Kickstarter pitch. An old picture showing Palmer Luckey (middle), inventor of Oculus Rift, with Valve's Michael Abrash (left) and some other guy who has a Reddit account.
Valve had been tinkering with head-mounted displays in-house, but the key thinkers behind the project were let go. They later popped up with their very own augmented reality and virtual reality glasses, CastAR.But, as two Valve slides pointed out, "there's a lot left to be done" with VR technology.Up to 100x resolution would apparently help, as would optimising the optics and sorting out head tracking and eye tracking. The wired tether is a pain, and there's need for 3D audio, haptics and body tracking, among other things.By 2015, Valve thinks it's "feasible" for a VR headset to have 20ms latency, 3ms pixel persistence, 95Hz refresh, 110-degree field of vision, 1Kx1K resolution per eye, high quality optics and very capable tracking.Presumably that headset is the consumer version of Oculus Rift that Oculus VR recently secured a gigantic $75m to develop - on top of a further $16m not so long ago. The consumer version had been earmarked for release this year."The PC will be the hotbed for VR," Valve told attending developers. Look at the creativity that's already apparent with Rift on PC: developers have freedom to innovate, Valve said, and PC is the most powerful platform - "and getting more so" - that's around. In other words, expect Steam to go big with Oculus Rift support. Fantastic.
