The new Gamers Club Unlocked membership will cost $119.99 and last for two years, during which the big blue retailer will allow customers to save 20 percent off new games, as well as a host of additional benefits. The change is slated to go live November 10.
A Best Buy representative told Polygon that the cost of Gamers Club Unlocked is equivalent to the savings a customer would earn buying 10 games over the course of the membership's two-year length. This calculation assumes said games cost $59.99 each, thus saving the hypothetical customer $11.99 per game. Those who opt into the program will also receive double My Best Buy points for every dollar spent on games, accessories and DLC, as well as double points for every dollar received for trade-ins. Similar to GameStop's PowerUp Rewards card, the Gamers Club Unlocked membership will also save customers 10 percent on pre-owned games, and earn them 10 percent extra when they trade in.
Gamers Club Unlocked memberships will also be part of an "Epic Gaming Package" deal for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Packages consist of one system, an extra controller, two new games, a two-year subscription to either PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live, a two-year Geek Squad protection plan, and a Gamers Club Unlocked Membership. The PS4 package will cost $800, for a total savings of $89.92, while an Xbox One package will run you $880, and save you $109.93.
That's a lot of information to take in, but we expect you'll hear it again the next time you stop at your local Best Buy. In the meantime, if you've got questions about the packages, Best Buy has an FAQ page to help you out.

Now that anyone (well, anyone with an invitation) with a spare $1,500 can get their very own Google Glass, the folks in Mountain View have thoughtfully released a software update for the famous wearable. We're frankly surprised Glass owners weren't able to do this before, but you can now look up your calendar directly from the headset. Simply say "ok glass, google my agenda" or "ok glass, what am I doing next week?" to see what's up next on your busy schedule. Another new feature is the ability to customize a location as either "home" or "work" so you can easily ask directions for either of those places.
Interestingly, the update also removed a feature. After finding out that people were long-pressing their touchpads by mistake, the company has turned that functionality off. Instead, Google recommends tapping the touchpad three times to initiate a search. Other upgraded goodies include a new tutorial setup and a screencast shortcut. So if you're lucky enough to own one of these headsets, go on and download the update from the thing on your noggin. And while you're at it, maybe figure out a way to invite us onto that Google barge.

November 9th, 2013, 00:03 Posted By: wraggster
On its earnings call today, Activision Blizzard was asked a number of questions about the industry's market conditions, the console transition, and how it's handling its own franchises during this stretch. Interestingly, in a comment near the end of the call, CEO Bobby Kotick noted how Activision is actually encouraged that console installed bases could grow more quickly this time around because both Microsoft and Sony are better prepared and have improved manufacturing capabilities.
There are "lots of efficiencies in manufacturing that could drive hardware prices down sooner in the cycle," Kotick said. He didn't elaborate beyond that, but added "There's no indication from our perspective that you're going to see anything other than a very successful 7-8 years."
For the current generation, it took only eight months for Sony to reduce price on PS3, but that was partly out of need since consumers weren't willing to pay $599. Microsoft's first price cut on Xbox 360 came in August 2007 after launching in November 2005. With both PS4 and Xbox One using similar off-the-shelf PC architectures, it likely will be easier for both companies to reduce costs more quickly and, if they choose, pass on those savings to consumers in the form of price cuts.
Elsewhere in the call, Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg addressed the difficulties publishers are having with AAA console games. "Today market fundamentals are mixed. Demand for many annualized AAA titles are down as consumers continue to show hesitation ahead of the launch of next-gen consoles - in fact, some games based on top selling franchises are significantly down versus last year. While we don't expect to be immune to these industry-wide patterns... purchase intent and awareness for our key titles is strong," he said.
"We're also seeing increased supply and demand for next-gen consoles and we believe consumers will reward those who have breakthrough next-gen games ready at launch and we do. Historically, at console transitions the top titles have emerged stronger than when they entered the cycle. We believe our two top five franchises, Call of Duty and Skylanders, are well positioned and will emerge stronger over the long-term."
He continued, noting the incredible success of DLC for Activision's games: "One of the keys to our success has been the ability to keep players engaged with new content all year long. Year-to-date, Call of Duty digital revenues set new franchise records. The franchise also set a new record for online engagement with over 4 billion hours played online. Players are spending more of their time and money online on Call of Duty than ever before. In the last 12 months, Black Ops 2, including digital sales, has generated more revenue than any other console game ever has in a single year. If you took Black Ops 2 digital revenue alone this year as a standalone game it would be the third largest retail game behind only GTA V and Skylanders Giants (including toys and accessories)."
Importantly, for the just launched Call of Duty: Ghosts, Hirshberg added that on the Xbox 360 "we're seeing average sessions for Ghosts which are longer than Black Ops 2 or Modern Warfare 3 during the same time period," and "historically more engagement has meant better monetization over time because people are more willing to do things like purchase DLC or a season pass."
As for Skylanders Swap Force, Hirshberg acknowledged that Skylanders is "not immune to the effects of a console transition year." Sell-through is down versus last year, but the vast majority of sales have been in November and December for the franchise, so Activision is optimistic. In fact, the company has invested in the largest marketing and retail campaign for the franchise yet and retail space for Swap Force is actually 20 percent higher than it was for Giants.
Looking ahead to 2014, Hirshberg also talked about how excited Activision is to get Bungie's Destiny out the door. He said that the game is already "on track for most pre-orders for any new IP in history."

Christmas is coming, and if you have nieces, nephews, or ankle biters of your own roaming your house, you’re probably wondering how you’ll be subsidizing Santa this year. it looks like Toys R Us will be selling the Leapfrog LeapsterGS for $30 on Black Friday this year. It’s a Linux device running on a 550 MHz ARM 9, with 128 MB of RAM and 2 GB of Flash. Overpowered for a children’s toy, but perfect for when the kids forget about it in a month, because now you can replace the firmware with a proper Linux install and run classic emulators.
Putting Linux on these cheap handhelds made for children isn’t anything new; we’ve seen it done with the Leapfrog DIDJ and the Leapfrog Explorer. Those consoles, however, had rather anemic CPUs and not a whole lot of RAM. Moore’s Law finally kicked in for stocking stuffers, it seems, and the Leapster GS is powerful enough to play all those Nintendo, Game Boy and even MAME games.
All that’s needed to flash the new firmware is soldering a few wires onto the LeapsterGS’ board for a serial connection. The new LeapsterGS firmware even has an MP3 and movie player, so even if the recipient of one of these machines grows tired of it in a week, there’s still a lot of life left in it.

Think the LEGO franchise is just for kids? Warner Bros is spending more money than ever before on LEGO Marvel and are targeting older gamers.
The game has already featured ahead of the TV show Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, which targets the 16 to 34-year-old male audience.
It has also been pushing the game over social media and has delivered over 2m pre-rolls on video on demand services such as You Tube.
Warner Bros launches biggest LEGO campaign for Marvel
Traveller’s Tales latest will also appear in national press advertising.
Of course Warner is not forgetting its core kid audience, with coverage in the kids press, including front covers and competitions.
“LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is our biggest LEGO video game launch to date with continuous above-the-line and experiential support throughout the campaign,” said Warner Interactive’s UK sales and marketing director Spencer Crossley.
“This game not only appeals to our traditional kids audience, but also reaches a broader and older generation of Marvel superfans. We’ve seen a considerable broadening in the demographic of the market for LEGO video games since the huge success of LEGO Batman 2 and LEGO The Lord of the Rings and with the wider and deeper appeal of the LEGO Marvel licence, we’re looking forward to appealing to a much bigger market."

For £5,500 consumers can now buy an altogether different video gaming collectible from UK retail GAME.
The chain has teamed up with STA Travel to offer ‘The Epic Gaming Adventure’, a four-week holiday visiting 13 different cities all of which are historically significant to the history of video games.
Described as a “pilgrimage across the globe”, the trip includes visits to Edinburgh, Seoul, Tokyo, LA, San Francisco and New York.
Here’s the full list:
· Edinburgh: The trip kicks off in Edinburgh, home to Rockstar North, creators of the Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Revolver and Max Payne franchises
· London: Whilst stopping over in London, visit the Loading Bar in Soho, modelled on the famous gaming cafes in Tokyo
· Phuket: Gamers will then hot foot it to Phang Nga Bay to bask in the sunshine of the beautiful Ko Tapu Islands, a setting frequented by Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Underworld
· Seoul: Visit Seoul, home to the world’s premiere online gaming e-Sports Stadium where professional gaming is taken to a whole new level - join thousands of fellow spectators to watch as top gamers take to the stage to battle
· Tokyo: Once you’ve made it to Tokyo, drop by legendary developer Konami’s headquarters. Whilst here, the must have visit for any gaming fanatic is the Taito Station - whilst arcades have all but disappeared from the UK, this famous Japanese location arguably offers the world’s best arcade gaming experience with fans from across the country flocking here
· Los Angeles: Now it’s off to the US for a cross-country trip. Kick off in L.A., the home of the annual E3 Games Conference and see the landmarks that inspired classic locations in L.A. Noire and Grand Theft Auto’s Los Santos.
· San Francisco: Take a trip to Santa Clare, the home of retro gaming just outside San Francisco, and the reputed birthplace of gaming, where the iconic Pong was developed by Atari Games in 1972.
· New Hampshire: The next stop on the gaming pilgrimage is a trip back in time to the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in New Hampshire, a classic gaming museum and arcade haven, open since 1952.
· New York: While in New York, visit various locations featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Crysis 3 before experiencing the typical Western landscape of Bandera County in Texas, which inspired the settings in titles such as Red Dead Redemption and Gun
“The Epic Gaming Adventure is an all-out celebration of gaming,” Game Retail MD Ailsa McKnight stated. “This ambitious trip will take gamers on a journey through the rich history of videogame culture, taking in the birthplace of modern gaming, to Seoul where it something of a national pastime, whilst taking a look at the exciting developments still to come.
“We understand gamers and want to offer the gaming community something more than the standard beach holiday. We think this will be a highly desirable Christmas present for any gamer.”

There are several elements of predictable crowd behaviour when it comes to the highly anticipated launches of huge-budget videogames. First, the game is liable to receive generally high reviews, with minor variations among outlets. Second, the outliers on that narrow range will be subject to scrutiny – the perfect score must have been ‘bought by PR’, while the ‘half-point lower than the median’ score is a travesty whose text Internet commentators must analyse line by line to unveil certain discrepancy and conspiracy.Beyond that, there are other certain triggers: if the outlying review score is written by a woman, the proportionate fervour increases. If the woman dislikes some element of the game readers can correlate to her gender – the portrayal of female characters in the game, to use an obvious example – that objection will become shorthand for her entire opinion, even if the review is generally good.A release the size of Grand Theft Auto V is the perfect showcase for this reliable crowd behaviour, and the gaming community met its launch exactly as expected. Carolyn Petit’s disappointment with some of the game’s misogyny only moderately affected her highly scored Gamespot review, but attracted close to 20,000 comments, most of them outraged, some even abusive. Readers were so eager to disprove misogyny, or censure any complaint thereof, that they surely committed it.It’s strange: a corporate giant publishes a game with a budget of over $260m (that swiftly earns more than $1bn), and gamers act like it needs protection from pesky ‘social issues’. In a recent column I said I find it weird that game fans, once creative outsiders, now demand such frenzied loyalty to expensive tech and corporations. I also find it troubling that the word ‘misogyny’ is such a reliable trigger for consumer rage and defensiveness.

Dixons, Argos and several independent retailers have told PCR they'd relish a retail launch of the Google Glass smart glasses.
Google's UK country sales director recently told PCR that Google is hoping to get a consumer version of Google Glass to retailers "very soon", following the launch of the Glass Development Kit (GDK) to developers and the Explorer Program for early testers.
“We’d like to stock Google Glass, we think it’s great technology, it depends on whether Google wants to bring it to the UK," Dean Kramer, Head of Computing Category at Dixons Retail, told PCR.
Simon Barry, Trading Manager for Computing at Argos, added: "I hope to have the opportunity to trial Google Glass for myself at some point in the near future. As a major electronics retailer in the UK, we are of course exploring stocking the product as customers will expect us to offer it, although it’s too early to say for sure."
Gavin Holder, Director at GHI Computers, thinks Glass will be a great boost to tech retail.
"The eagerly anticipated Google Glass will no doubt be a winner due to behemoth’s ability to make all things succeed," he said. "For a retailer I have little doubt this will put masses of margin in the tills."
Members of the PCR Retail Advisory Panel also said they're excited about the wearable tech space approaching 2014.
Dixons' Kramer added: "This is certainly an emerging category – we will bring it to life and begin to understand what consumers are looking for over the next 12 months. Once there is a device at a mass market price point with a clearly focused usage, we think wearable tech will be big.”
Argos' Barry commented: "Wearable tech is exciting but evolving. We have a number of options on offer at Argos and we are seeing steady interest from customers.”
A consumer version of Google Glass is expected to arrive in stores in 2014.
In the meantime, a cheaper, more simplistic set of smart glasses - the ION Glasses - is preparing to rival Google Glass.

Playing video games might not rot your brain, but instead boost it, a new scientific study has shown.
Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the St Hedwig Hospital in Berlin found that adult participants in the study who played Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo DS for half an hour per day for two months showed a “significant gray matter increase.”
The study, which was published in Molecular Psychiatry, stated that the areas of improvement were the “right hippocampal formation (HC), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and bilateral cerebellum”.
"GM increases in HC and DLPFC correlated with participants’ desire for video gaming,” added the report, “[with] evidence suggesting a predictive role of desire in volume change.”
“Video game training augments GM in brain areas crucial for spatial navigation, strategic planning, working memory and motor performance going along with evidence for behavioral changes of navigation strategy.”
The study suggested that the beneficial effects of video gaming could be used to “counteract known risk factors for mental disease such as smaller hippocampus and prefrontal cortex volume in, for example, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and neurodegenerative disease”.
Mario isn’t the first game to be said to be great for the mind – a previous study found that fast-paced RTS games such as StarCraft can boost players’ cognitive flexibility.

Brits now spend £9 billion on new tech devices each year, carrying around £22 billion worth of gear around with them. That's equivalent to £500,000 of merchandise on a tube at rush hour.
As gizmos become increasingly popular, cross-platform discount company VoucherCodes.co.uk – who isnominated for an ME Award – has found 55 per cent of Brits will ask for a gadget for Christmas this year.
The top ten tech list comprises the iPad Air, PlayStation 4, iPhone 5S and more, but it's Apple and Sony devices that secured 25 per cent of requests.
The top ten is as follows:
1. iPad Air
2. Playstation 4
3. iPhone 5s
4. Basic Kindle
5. Tesco Hudl
6. iPad Mini with retina display
7. Kindle Fire HDX 7
8. Google Nexus 7
9. iPhone 5c
10. Xbox One
Men are eight per cent more likely to add tech to their Christmas lists than women, but their desires change significantly as the former are more hopeful for a console, while women desire Apple products or a Kindle.
23 per cent of Brits hope to update their tech this year, and the £119 Tesco Hudl will bag one in 12 people who base their selections on value.
Additionally, tablets are particularly popular among older consumers, as the iPad Air and Kindle Fire are the top devices wanted by those aged 55+.

Despite the cries for updated hardware, the Raspberry Pi foundation has been playing it cool. They’re committed to getting the most out of their engineering investment, and the current board design for the Raspi doesn’t support more than 512Mb of memory, anyway.
What you see above isn’t a Raspberry Pi, though. It’s the Carrier-one from SolidRun. All loaded out, it has a system-on-module with a quad core ARM Cortex-A9, 2GB of RAM, 1000 Mbps Ethernet, USB host ports, eSATA, and LVDS display connector, a real time clock, and everything else you get with a Raspberry Pi, header pins included. It’s all the awesomesauce of the newer ARM boards that will still work with all your Raspberry Pi hardware.
If you’re thinking this is a product announcement, though, think again. The folks at SolidRun are merely using this Raspberry Pi form factor board as a prototyping and development platform for their CuBox-i device, In its lowest configuration, the CuBox-i1 is still no slouch and would be more than able to keep up with the most demanding Raspberry Pi applications.
Still, though, a hugely powerful board with lots of I/O is something we’d all love, and if SolidRun gets enough complaints praise, it seems like they might be willing to release the Carrier-one as an actual product.

Implementation of the wearable technology into US companies is expected to increase from one to ten per cent in the next five years.
Smartglasses such as Google Glass, are giving CIOs a new vision into how the technology could impact their businesses, says Gartner.
The technology research company said that the use of the wearable devices has the potential to improve worker efficiency in markets such as manufacturing, field service, retail and healthcare.
The devices are still an emerging technology, being used in less than one per cent of US businesses, however it is predicted that this figure man increase to around ten per cent in the next five years, especially for companies with offsite workers, like field service personnel and inspectors.
Angela McIntyre, research director at Gartner, said: “In the next three to five years, the industry that is likely to experience the greatest benefit from smartglasses is field service, potentially increasing profits by $1 billion annually.”
Initial adoption will most likely be slow largely due to the lack of apps and services, as well as general benefits that they could provide. However once prices are lowered and more consumer based versions are available, device adoption will be much higher - possibly with half of companies being able to supply the gadgets to employees in need of them.
One of the most obvious uses for the Google Glass is its traffic app possibilities, which could be used by delivery drivers - as well as what it could offer emergency services, making the way they do their jobs safer and with increased efficiency.
Basic functions of the glasses will help being better efficiency to companies with how-to instructions and illustrations on the display saving money on training sessions and meaning that jobs will be done the highest standards with no cutting of corners.
Tuong Nguyen, principal research analyst at Gartner, commented: “Classroom training and tests on the content of manuals can be reduced since much of the partial training can be done ‘on the job with assistance of smartglasses.
“However, training must always include safety and employees should continue to know how to use equipment for routine tasks.”
