Cross Assault, Capcom's online reality show about a Street Fighter X Tekken tournament, should have been a straightforward promotional device - a dog whistle inaudible to all but fighting game fanatics. But Capcom's PR wheeze backfired spectacularly this week. Cross Assault won't be remembered for whoever wins the $25,000 prize money tonight or the game it was trying to sell. Instead it will forever be associated with sexual harassment and gaming culture at its worst.Miranda Pakozdi and Aris Bakhtanians.
In case you missed it Giant Bomb's coveragehas all the detail but here's a summary. Aris Bakhtanians, the coach of Team Tekken, made numerous and persistent sexist remarks to Miranda Pakozdi, the sole female member of his team. Lewd, sleazy comments about her breast size and thighs plus requests for her to take her t-shirt off and chat about how he wants to smell her. Pakozdi's contract obliged her to stay in the competition so she had little choice but to endure it. Eventually, to escape this unpleasant situation, she stopped trying to win matches and got herself knocked out of the competition. When Bakhtanians was challenged about his behaviour he showed no remorse. "This is a community that's, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it's not the fighting game community," he explained as if it was Pakozdi's fault he was a jerk.Quite rightly his comments sparked a firestorm. Capcom distanced itself from Bakhtanians and "addressed" the issue by reminding those taking part to behave better. The games media coverage outraged many. Some because they felt his behaviour was unacceptable, others because they believed that daring to challenge Bakhtanians' lack of decency was some politically correct conspiracy to censor them. So, before we move on, let's get one thing straight: Bakhtanians' behaviour was vile. This is not about political correctness - it's about rudeness. He showed a complete lack of empathy for his teammate. Context matters. If friends want to talk to each other that way then fine, but this went way past a few trash talk jibes. But his idiotic comments did shine a light on the darker side of gaming culture, a side reflected in the abuse directed at those who criticised him and the journalists who reported on the matter. It's a side of gaming that too often we pretend isn't there, but the truth is there's an undercurrent of sexism, racism, homophobia and other forms of bigotry in some parts of the gaming world. It's not anything more than in real life of course, but the problem with gaming is that such behaviour is rarely challenged.Of course few people want to mix politics with their fun but sadly I don't think those of us who feel such behaviour is repulsive can continue to turn a blind eye to it. I've done it. I've found myself playing online with homophobic assholes and simply muted them. It's the easy option, silencing them without any awkward confrontation. It's the gaming equivalent of sticking fingers in my ears and shouting 'I can't hear you' over and over again. I also know I'm not the only one. Some people mute these players, others retreat to the safe warm cocoon of private matches, and many give up on online gaming altogether."When unchallenged these attitudes fester like cancer. When those who object don't act, those who behave this way are validated and encouraged to continue acting like pricks."
But when unchallenged these attitudes fester like cancer. When those who object don't act, those who behave this way are validated and encouraged to continue acting like pricks. In short, I and others who feel the same about this but do nothing have been ceding ground to these people and that is a big problem. You only need to look at racism in football to see where this could lead. If the industry and - above all - the players don't tackle this, it should surprise no one if gaming's image becomes tarred with bigotry in a few years' time.I don't want that. The industry certainly wouldn't want that and - I suspect - those of you reading this wouldn't want that either. Hell, I don't even think Bakhtanians would want that.So here's what the Cross Assault incident means for me: the next time I play online and encounter some bad-mouthed bigot, I will take him or her to task and I hope - no, I want - others will do the same. How you challenge it doesn't matter. Maybe you'll train your firepower on them in the game, maybe you'll stop playing and start arguing, or maybe you'll rate down their reputation on Xbox Live. It doesn't matter how they react either. What matters is that you did it and in doing so reclaimed a piece of gaming for those who aren't rude arseholes. I doubt it'll be an enjoyable experience but I'm sick of seeing an entertainment medium I love being dragged down into the gutter by the behaviour of this tiny but vocal group of players. It's not that I want to see Bakhtanians and others like him pushed out of gaming altogether but it's important that they understand where the line between banter and abuse is. Bakhtanians says he didn't mean to offend and maybe he didn't, but he clearly lacked the ability to judge where that line was. So let's correct him and all the others who behave like him by ramming home that 'this, this right here, that is the line'.

This article at the Verge claims that Valve is currently working on a way to bring Steam to the living room with its own gaming console. Quoting: 'According to sources, the company has been working on a hardware spec and associated software which would make up the backbone of a "Steam Box." The actual devices may be made by a variety of partners, and the software would be readily available to any company that wants to get in the game. Adding fuel to that fire is a rumor that the Alienware X51 may have been designed with an early spec of the system in mind, and will be retroactively upgradable to the software. Apparently meetings were held during CES to demo a hand-built version of the device to potential partners. We're told that the basic specs of the Steam Box include a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. The devices will be able to run any standard PC titles, and will also allow for rival gaming services (like EA's Origin) to be loaded up. Part of the goal of establishing a baseline for hardware, we're told, is that it will give developers a clear lifecycle for their products, with changes possibly coming every three to four years. Additionally, there won't be a required devkit, and there will be no licensing fees to create software for the platform.'"

Walt Williams, writer of 2K shooter Spec: Ops The Line, has said he thinks the industry can't claim video games are an art form and then at the same time say aspects such as violence have no impact on players.
<figure style="border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px; padding: 0px; width: 300px; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-transform: none; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; clear: both; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: inherit; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; float: right; display: block; white-space: normal; position: relative; orphans: 2; widows: 2; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); border-image: initial; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;" class="article-image article-image-alt article-image-300"></figure>Speaking about graphic violence in an interview with CVG, Williams was asked whether Spec Ops was consciously leveraging gratuitous content to emotionally connect with players. He responded by saying "absolutely", but was quick to say the studio is acutely aware that it needs to be tactful."The last thing we want to be is exploitive, because then what you're doing just becomes childish. You're just being shocking for shock's sake," he said.
Williams continued by saying the industry can only be considered a legitimate art form if games endeavour to engage the player emotionally as much as possible.
"For years and years, as an industry, we've all been waving our hands and going, 'we're art! Respect us art!' but the moment the whole violence debate comes up, we go, 'oh, violent games don't affect people'. Now, I'm not saying violent games make people violent, but, at the same time, you can't say in the same breath that we are art and we don't have any affect at all. To be art, you have to be affecting."
2K Games has announced Spec Ops: The Line will release in North America on June 26 and internationally on June 29. Keep an eye out for the full interview later today.

In the increasingly complex world of gaming mice, we'd be happy with one that doesn't scrape the paint from the top of our desk. Still, if your ambitions are a little loftier, Roccat's unveiled the Savu gaming mouse in anticipation for its big day out at CeBIT. Named after an Indonesian province, its the first mouse to include a trophy system (nope, us neither) that rewards "gaming feats" when you reach the milestone of having clicked your right button a thousand times in an hour, or something. The 4,000 DPI optical sensor device has the company's usual clutch of features including Easy-Shift+ and customizable colors and it'll be available in May where you can customize it to your whimsy for an as-yet unspecified price.

A rash of new entries has dominated the Japanese top twenty this week, with the top six titles all newly released.
Once again, the PSP takes top spot with Namco Bandai's Tales of the Heroes Twin Brave, selling over 85,000 units to pip the newest Harvest Moon title, a 3DS exclusive, to the top of the chart.
Namco Bandai took third and fourth too, with a new PS3 Naruto title and I Have Few Friends Portable for PSP. Capcom's Asura's Wrath managed fifth, whilst Namco bracketed the new releases at the top of the chart with another PSP title, Nendoroid Generation, in sixth.
Hardware positions remained unchanged except for the 360 overtaking the PS2 after last week's resurgence for the ageing platform. 3DS is still the clear market leader for the territory, selling nearly three times as many units as nearest rival the PS3.

Credit card-sized computer sells out in hours
A British microcomputer with ambitions to revitalise computer science sold out yesterday just hours after release.
The Ł22 Raspberry Pi went on sale 6am Wednesday morning and just hours later its reseller RS and Farnell was battling a crashed website due to over demand.
A BBC News article on the device drew in 1.2 million views, the most of that day, according to a journalist working for the broadcaster.
The credit card-sized Raspberry Pi is conceived primarily to ignite enthusiasm in programming and computer science at schools.
Created over six years by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, of which Frontier boss and Develop columnist David Braben (pictured) is a prominent member, the computer is designed to be as open as possible, so as to a give students access to a fully fledged PC experience and, crucially, provide them with the opportunity to cut their teeth on creative computer programming.

The good news is that Raspberry Pi's highly anticipated teeny-tiny Linux computers are on sale now, just barely making the promised February launch window (good thing it's a leap year). The better news, is that the $25 Model A version has gotten an upgrade from the planned 128Mb of RAM to 256Mb matching the Model B, which still throws in an extra USB port and an Ethernet hookup for $10 more. Unfortunately there is some bad news as well, while the Model A is going into production "immediately", cheapskates will have to hold off a little, as the Model B is the only one on sale right now. Built on a Broadcom BCM2835 700MHz ARM11 processor, they're intended as a cheap computing option that require only a keyboard and RCA or HDMI-connected display to give a full desktop experience including gaming and HD video playback . The team also announced it has secured manufacturing and distribution agreements that should guarantee a steady supply, without the previous limitation of 10,000 at a time batches. Need more technical details? Hit the FAQ page below, or put down a few Hamiltons -- they can be ordered directly from distributors Premier Farnell / Element 14 and RS Components -- and find out how it runs (Fedora, Debian and ArchLinux are currently supported) for yourself.
Update: It appears the servers of both retailers are completely crushed by traffic at the moment, and we're told RS will ship in the UK only. Good luck in your struggle with that most difficult of questions: Keep mashing F5, or get some sleep and try again in the morning? Raspberry Pi's Twitter account reports Farrell appears to have already sold out, so keep that in mind. A press release and video demo from the BBC follow after the break.

Have you considered that if a secretive governmental cabal seized control of your Kinect, it would be able to spy on you as you lurched awkwardly to Just Dance? Such is the price we pay for abrogating our right to privacy, or at least it was until Catalyst Components came up with a solution. Connect Pritect to Protect Kinect is a high-gloss plastic shield that clips over your device to block the sensor bar's cameras from prying eyes. The only opening is a tiny hole for the Xbox logo -- the efficacy of which is shown after the break. Freedom from surveillance will cost you a meager $15 from Target, Microcenter, Best Buy and Amazon.

In an exclusive Transatlantic Skype conversation with Slashdot editor Timothy Lord recorded on Feb. 22, Raspberry Pi project leader Eben Upton talks about the state of Raspberry Pi, and tells us that yes -- finally -- they now have distributors in the U.S. and other countries instead trying to ship every unit from the U.K. Even better, instead of buying a batch of boards, selling them, and only then ordering another batch, the new distribution agreements mean they can keep a steady flow of orders coming in and going out. One slight downer is that people who have donated to the project may not get their Pi(s) right away; the distributors have spoken for all of the current order. Eben talks about this, and about how Raspberry Pi is going to take care of contributors, starting at about 4:15 in the video. You can also look at an in-person interview Tim did with Eben in January -- or wait until the end of today's video for a list of other Raspberry Pi videos.

The Raspberry Pi has seen huge demand on its launch day and the level of interest in the low-cost micro-PC has brought down the websites of its retail partners.
The device, which reportedly sold out almost immediately, is the size of a credit card and retails for just Ł22. It was created by a charity foundation based on an idea from UK video game legend David Braben, and was designed with the aim of developing a cheap PC that would give children an avenue to learn programming.
This first run of devices is aimed primarily at software developers in the hope that they in turn will create more software for the Debian-based device. However, it has been widely reported in the media and at the time of writing is trending on Twitter, so interest is probably coming from a much wider range of customers than was originally anticipated.

Google’s ‘smartphone’ glasses are expected by the end of the year, reports The New York Times.
The glasses will have a low-resolution built-in camera that will be able to monitor the world in real time. Data about the wearer’s surroundings can then be overlaid onto the screens, displaying information about locations, surrounding buildings and nearby friends.
According to several Google employees familiar with the project who asked not to be named, the glasses will go on sale to the public by the end of the year and will cost the current price of the average smartphone.
The New York Times also stated that the Google X team has been actively discussing the privacy implications of the glasses. With the built-in camera recording what the wearer is looking at, the company wants to ensure that other people will be able to know if they are being recorded by the specs.
Users will be able to view text messages and may possibly rely on an Android smartphone to connect to the web. The glasses are reported to have motion-sensing capabilities, 3G or 4G wireless connection and Google Goggles augmented-reality software.

Source: http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/89...-mario-party-9
[h=2]GAME has confirmed that it will not be selling Mass Effect 3 when it's released next week or Mario Party 9 on Friday, with some rumours suggesting they will also not be stocking any other new EA or Nintendo games.[/h]
SSX may be the last Electronic Arts game that GAME ever stocks, if the latest rumours are to be believed. With GAME releasing the following statement just moments ago:
'We currently have a supply issue with regards to Mass Effect 3, which means that GAME and Gamestation will not be able to fulfil orders for Mass Effect 3 at this time. We want to give customers as much notice about this as possible and provide them with a range of options ahead of launch.
We appreciate that this is disappointing for our customers, and we apologise sincerely for the inconvenience that this will cause. We value the loyalty of our customers very highly and as a gesture of goodwill we are providing the following:
• Customers who have pre-ordered in store*, will have the opportunity to add Ł5 worth of Reward points to their card if they visit us from 1st March through to 16th March 2012
• Customers who have placed a deposit for the title* will receive a refund as well as the Ł5 worth of Reward points between 1st - 16th March 2012
• Customers who have pre-ordered online, will be provided with an online voucher to the value of Ł5 to be spent on any purchase on our sites
For more information we would advise customers to visit EA www.ea.com/uk/masseffect3update on how to get hold of Mass Effect 3.
*All customer must be able provide valid proof that they have placed a pre-order or deposit'
According to website Eurogamer things are even worse than they sound, as they claim no EA game beyond SSX will be stocked by GAME. SSX is due out this Friday, so that means no Mass Effect 3 the week after, no FIFA Street, and no Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13.
They also claim that no other Nintendo distributed games will be sold either. We can't confirm that but Nintendo has just sent us a long list of shops that will be selling Mario Party 9 on Friday - and it doesn't include GAME.
Mario Party 9 will be third Nintendo distributed game in a row not to be sold by GAME, after The Last Story and Tekken 3D Prime Edition.
Nintendo and EA have refused to comment on the situation further, although EA has referred us to the same page on their website mentioned by GAME.
The page warns that the Mass Effect 3 N7 Collector's Edition will only be available at Amazon.co.uk, Play.com, Zavvi.com, and ShopTo.Net. GAME are not listed, even though the Collector's Edition (and the standard ones) are still on GAME's website.
EA are advising customers who have pre-ordered the N7 Collector's Edition to re-order it through one of the above stores. An update about the N7 Warfare Gear in-game weapons pack is promised for later today.
Ever since its credit rating changed at the beginning of the year GAME has had trouble keeping new games in stock. Wii game The Last Story still isn't being stocked by them and they didn't have any of Ubisoft's PS Vita games at launch.
If the problems with Mass Effect 3 aren't resolved very quickly then the future is looking very grim for both GAME and Gamestation.

With just days before Google's new unified user privacy policy comes into effect, the French data protection agency (CNIL) warned the internet giant that the policy was likely unlawful in Europe.
The French CNIL had been appointed as the lead investigator by Europe's collective privacy commissioners following Google's announcement that a myriad of individual Google service privacy policies would be condensed into a single policy.
Google said the simplified policy was "clear and transparent" but concerns have been raised that the policy makes it easier for Google to share user data across services for the purpose of offering more 'customised' advertising to users.
A letter to Google CEO Larry Page and posted on the CNIL website said: "Our preliminary analysis shows that Google’s new policy does not meet the requirements of the European Directive on Data Protection."
Google's privacy boss Peter Fleischer said that the company was opposed to European calls for a delay for the introduction of the policy, pointing out that Google services have been prolific and obvious about notifying users of the upcoming changes.
"To pause now would cause a great deal of confusion for users," Fleischer said.

Generation Media reveals the best performing video game TV ad campaigns of last year, including marketing for 3DS and THQ's uDraw.
As 2011’s only major hardware release, it’s no surprise that Nintendo’s campaign for the 3DS was the largest of the year. Spreading the campaign across 22 weeks, however, meant that it had one of the lowest weekly TVR weights in the Top Ten.
This was not Nintendo’s only strategy, as the Pokémon Black & White, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land campaigns demonstrated. Nintendo’s willingness to mix up their strategies contributed to having six campaigns in the Top Ten.
Sony was a last gasp entrant into the Top Ten, beginning their Christmas-themed campaign for the PS3 on December 2nd.
The PS3 and 3DS were not the only hardware that made the chart. uDraw and Kinect meant that hardware made up four of the Top Ten.
Kinect ads was on air for 23 weeks – longer than any other 2011 campaign. The campaign actually averaged fewer TVRs per week than any other campaign in the Top Ten. A TVR represents one per cent of a target audience. This number can go over 100 if a viewer saw an ad more than once.

Sony's new handheld the PlayStation Vita has dominated the UK software charts this week. Not only did Uncharted: Golden Abyss take the number one spot, with FIFA Football securing second place, but together they accounted for 50 per cent of Vita games sales.
When it came to the hardware 79 per cent of Vita sales were of the wifi version, as opposed to the more expensive 3G model.
The Vita effect was also felt further down the chart, with a new entry for Wipeout 2048 at 11, and boost for Rayman Origins that pushed it up from 36 to 5 despite it not being stocked in specialist retailer GAME.
It's worth noting that the charts don't cover digital sales, which are a large part of the Vita offering, and so don't give a complete picture of the machine's overall software sales.
Core console titles Syndicate and The Last Story also made their debuts on the chart, at 7 and 15 respectively, while RPG Fallout: New Vegas returned to the chart at 17 in the form of a new Ultimate Edition.

Charity SpecialEffect, which helps disabled gamers find ways to play a range of titles, has seen a massive rise in demand for its services.
"There's been a big change since we saw you in autumn," said director Dr Mick Donegan.
He says there's been a rapid increase in requests for help, from children, war veterans and the general public, thanks to recent appearances in the games press and consumer channels like PlayStation Access.
"When that went out there were a lot of people who got in touch as a result as a result of that wanting support, and wanted it on a one to one basis."
SpecialEffect give disabled gamers all types of support, from simply modifying controllers to allow someone with limited movement to use them, to building and supplying more complex devices for those that barely have any movement at all.
"In other words a process that takes time to get the device just right, and that time requires people to do it. We're working extremely hard but the numbers are going up, so we need to increase the support that we give."
As such they'll soon be introducing a regular giving scheme to allow people to make donations to the service beyond one off events, something that Dr Donegan says will be vital to expanding the team and the number of people it can help.

"Regular giving will help us plan ahead, it will enable me to take on additional staff. For example we need some more occupational therapists because at the moment we only have one day a week, and the requests for visits are far higher than that."
He also reported that while demand has gone up, so has support. For instance the numbers involved in the British 10K London Run for the charity have doubled to 40, with teams from companies like Splash Damage, Eurogamer, Namco Bandai, Audio Motion and Future Publishing taking part.
They're also working more closely than ever with developers to collaborate directly with game production to make sure they're as accessible as possible. Dr Donegan is currently in talks with Spash Damage about its games, as well as Microsoft's Soho Studios about making its Kinect titles a viable option for children with disabilities.
Splash Damage's Paul Wedgewood and Sports Interactive's Miles Jacobson have also signed up as vice presidents to support and promote the charity.
"We've had such incredible good will from gamers and people who work in the games industry that it has been really overwhelming."
