Turtle Beach announced a duo of new XBOX 360 and PS3 gaming headsets on day one of CES, and we were able to spend a bit of time with one of them, theXP400, on the show floor. It's Turtle Beach's flagship gaming headset, featuring adjustable Dolby 5.1 virtual surround sound, a non-A2DP dual-pairing Bluetooth radio for picking up phone calls during gaming sessions, a 15 hour rechargeable battery and dual-band 2.4/5GHZ built-in WiFi.
The actual over-the-ear pieces have a much better layout from previous models, though there are almost as many buttons as there are on the controller you'd be wielding -- with volume up / down, chat volume up / down, mute, Bluetooth pairing, limiter button and tone buttons. The included dual-band WiFi adapter that connects to your gaming console of choice is small and pretty minimalistic in design. The adjustable surround angles feature seems useful but we can't help but to feel it's a bit gimmicky -- we have a hard time figuring out which setting is better. One feature that we really like is the new Limiter function, which allows you to keep the volume relatively high to listen for those footsteps (lower in volume) but won't blow your ear drums out when a RPG rocket (explosion-like volume levels) hits you in the face. The sound was also crisp and loud as we completed our spec-op mission at the Turtle Beach gaming booth, where the headset's noise-blocking abilities proved to be particularly handy. Hit up the gallery below for a close look at the $220 gaming headset set to be available this quarter.

UK retailer Game Group has denied reports that its game.co.uk website has been hacked.
Earlier today Softpedia reported that attackers had breached Game's website security by exploiting a shell injection vulnerability, and posted email addresses and passwords in plain text of 200 users on the Pastebin website. In a statement, however, the retailer has denied any such breach had taken place.
"At Game we guard our customers' details very carefully," the company told us. "We have thoroughly investigated the hacking claims made today by the website Pastebin, and can confirm that they are entirely false.
"The published email addresses are not registered users of game.co.uk, and there has been no breach of our database security.
"We would like to assure all our customers that their details are well-protected, and advise anyone who has any questions to contact our customer services team via the website, our Facebook page, or Twitter account."

Normally the holidays are good to video game sales. This year, though, not so much. According to NPD game sales in December were down 21 percent over the same time last year, to just $3.99 billion. Hardware sales took an even larger nosedive, plummeting 28 percent, and accessories dropped 27 points. For the full year, video game sales were down 8 percent compared with 2010, and even digital sales suffered. Downloadable content, in app purchases, subscriptions and other non-physical media gaming sales totaled between $16.3 and $16.6 billion -- down 2 percent from last year. And, in case you're interested, the best selling game of the year was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 -- shocker!

The industry as a whole still managed to bang out $3.99 billion in combined new sales of hardware, physical software and accessories between November 27 and December 31, 2011. This is, however, a 21 percent drop year-over-year, as the industry pulled down a combined $5.07 billion during the same period in 2010.
"Overall industry results are not entirely surprising given that we are on the back end of the current console lifecycle, combined with the continued digital evolution of gaming," said Anita Frazier, an analyst with The NPD Group. "Core gamers continue to be engaged and spend on established franchises across both the digital and physical format using multiple devices for different gaming occasions."
A smooth $2.04 billion of that $3.99 billion total was caused entirely by new physical software sales, a dash for the cash that continues to be lead byModern Warfare 3. The pseudo-medieval allure of November's second place podium finisher, Skyrim, was not enough to keep its throne for a second term; the Dovahkiin has been usurped by Ubisoft's compulsory neon-dancing simulator, Just Dance 3.
Comparatively, Skyrim got off easy: Uncharted 3, Saints Row: The Third and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, are all absent from December's Top-10 list, just weeks after their respective releases. Skyward Sword wasn't Nintendo's only horse in this race, however, as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Landclosed out December in fourth and ninth place, respectively. Overall, Nintendo, Ubisoft and Electronic Arts claimed more Top-10 real estate than their competitors, each publishing two of the month's best selling titles.

Assassination and dancing has proven to be a lucrative mix, as Just Dance 2and 3 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations helped Ubisoft to lead this year's best seller's list with three entries. That's according to the NPD Group, which also estimates the video game industry's profits, comprising "new physical video and PC games, used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile games," reached sales of somewhere between $16.3 and $16.6 billion in 2011.
Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 took top honors (it's kind of a big deal), while Just Dance 3 and Skyrim occupied the second and third spots, respectively. NPD also says that, despite sales growth in the digital sector yet again, physical copies offered at retail outlets still accounted for the majority of sales coming in at $9.3 billion, "an 8 percent decline over the $10.1 billion in 2010."
That decline was "partially" offset by increases in digital, mobile, and used game sales, which NPD expects to be a focus moving into 2012. "Our overall estimate of the market continues to point toward the increased imperative for deeper visibility into digital distribution than is available today, not only in the U.S. but globally," said NPD prez David McQuillan. Our waning shelf space agrees.

January 13th, 2012, 01:29 Posted By: wraggster
Today’s copy of UK newspaper The Independent carries word of new research that suggests an addiction to the internet and online gaming could actually alter the brain.
Researchers used MRI scanner to examine the brains of adolescents who spent excessive amount of time online, often playing online games.
These images suggested that subjects suffered an impairment of the brain in areas that involve the processing of emotions, attention and decision making. The changes were similar to those observed in alcoholics or drug addicts.
"The majority of people we see with serious internet addiction are gamers – people who spend long hours in roles in various games that cause them to disregard their obligations,” consultant psychiatrist at Imperial College London Henrietta Bowden Jones stated.
“I have seen people who stopped attending university lectures, failed their degrees or their marriages broke down because they were unable to emotionally connect with anything outside the game.
“We are doing it because modern life requires us to link up over the net in regard to jobs, professional and social connections – but not in an obsessive way. When someone comes to you and says they did not sleep last night because they spent 14 hours playing games, and it was the same the previous night, and they tried to stop but they couldn't – you know they have a problem. It does tend to be the gaming that catches people out."
It is estimated that between five and ten per cent of internet users could be addicted.
Sadly, the paper lets itself down with one or two sweeping generalisations: “The majority are games players who become so absorbed in the activity they go without food or drink for long periods and their education, work and relationships suffer.”

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may have shattered records left, right and centre, but it fell far short of its predecessor in the UK.
As revealed by MCV this morning, ERA’s 2011 UK Entertainment charts reveals that Modern Warfare 3 sold 2,814,609 copies in the UK between its release on November 8th and the end of the year.
By comparison, Black Ops sold 3,266,298 copies in the same time period in 2010.
That’s a deficit of nearly half a million – 451,789 copies.
And Call of Duty wasn’t the only powerhouse gaming brand to suffer a slump. EA’s tremendous FIFA 12 fell 196,929 copies short of FIFA 11 with sales of 2,193,302 copies.
Perhaps the numbers aren’t such a big surprise, seeing as the 2011 UK games market finished 13 per cent lower than in 2010.

Production of the Raspberry Pi has begun! The what? The credit-card sized PC that costs either $24 (£16 - Model A) or $35 (£23 - Model B, has Ethernet port). The Raspberry Pi on paper.
"Raspberry Pis started being made a couple of days ago, but I was forbidden to tell you about it until signed contracts and receipts for payment had arrived - it's been killing me, especially since I've had tens of you asking me when manufacturing would start every day for the last few weeks," wrote Raspberry Pi Founation volunteer and spokesperson "Liz"."This means that the first units from the first batch will be rolling off the line at the end of January."Broadly, the Raspberry Pi movement hopes to revitalise computing among the young. In days of old, kids messed around with and therefore learnt about Amigas, Commodore 64s, BBC Micros and Spectrum ZXs because they were cool. But then along came consoles, and away went bedroom tinkering."We don't claim to have all the answers. We don't think that the Raspberry Pi is a fix to all of the world's computing issues; we do believe that we can be a catalyst. "The Raspberry Pi Foundation
And the dot-com bubble burst. And schools stuck by rubbish ICT lessons - see today's fabulous news about that. The result was a drop-off in computing skills and computing interest, something Cambridge lecturer Eben Upton noticed and then decided to change. So Upton and friends used their spare time to create the Raspberry Pi. Elite creator David Braben joined the movement along the way.The Raspberry Pi is an ARM GNU/Linux box that can be plugged into a TV and keyboard. It can handle spreadsheets, word-processing, Blu-ray quality video playback and even games. See the comments thread below for a video of the Raspberry Pi powering Quake 3.The Raspberry Pi in the flesh.
Its system on a chip (SOC) is a Broadcom BCM2835..The Raspberry Pi FAQ explained: "This contains an ARM1176JZFS, with floating point, running at 700Mhz, and a Videocore 4 GPU."The GPU is capable of Blu-ray quality playback, using H.264 at 40MBits/s. It has a fast 3D core accessed using the supplied OpenGL ES2.0 and OpenVG libraries."The Raspberry Pi is powered by a 5v micro USB lead or 4xAA batteries."We've had enormous interest, support and help from the educational community, and we've been delighted and a little humbled by the number of enquiries from agencies and people far away from our original targets for the device," reads the Raspberry Pi website."Developing countries are interested in the Raspberry Pi as productivity devices in areas that simply can't afford the power and hardware needed to run a traditional desktop PC; hospitals and museums have contacted us to find out about using the Raspberry Pi to drive display devices. Parents of severely disabled kids have talked to us about monitoring and accessibility applications; and there seem to be a million and one people out there with hot soldering irons who want to make a robot. raspberry pie, for reference.
"We want to see cheap, accessible, programmable computers everywhere ... We want owning a truly personal computer to be normal for children. The Raspberry Pi Foundation
"We don't claim to have all the answers," the blurb concludes. "We don't think that the Raspberry Pi is a fix to all of the world's computing issues; we do believe that we can be a catalyst."We want to see cheap, accessible, programmable computers everywhere; we actively encourage other companies to clone what we're doing. We want to break the paradigm where without spending hundreds of pounds on a PC, families can't use the internet. We want owning a truly personal computer to be normal for children. We think that 2012 is going to be a very exciting year."All the UK needs now is tax breaks. What?Incidentally, on that topic: Raspberry Pi manufacture has begun in Taiwan and China. The Raspberry Pi Foundation would like to make the computer in the UK, but crippling tax laws make this impossible. For now." Right now, the way things stand means that a company doing its manufacturing abroad, depriving the UK economy, gets a tax break," explained Raspberry Pi volunteer "Liz"."It's an absolutely mad way for the Inland Revenue to be running things, and it's an issue we've taken up with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills."

It would appear the "thing" at CES this year is iPhone/iPad controllers. Following the announcement of three such devices from iCade, SteelSeries has revealed the Ion Mobile Controller, a tiny control pad designed to work over Bluetooth with PCs, tablets, or phones. It has a full suite of buttons and analog sticks, and a rechargeable battery for up to 20 hours of use.
As is unfortunately the trend with these things, no list of compatible software has been announced. More details, including pricing, will be revealed as its Q3 release approaches.
Other accessories featured in SteelSeries' lineup include an "ultra-portable" headset and a bunch of different mice. It's CES! That's prime "here's a list of accessories" season.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was the best-selling game of last year at retail in the UK.
The 2011 chart released by UKIE contains few surprises, with Activision's shooter beating FIFA 12 to top spot, ahead ofBattlefield 3 and Zumba Fitness. This is the third successive year that a Call Of Duty game has outsold the competition in the UK.
Modern Warfare 3 was also the best-selling game on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Zumba Fitness topped the Wii chart, while Professor Layton And The Spectre's Call was the top-selling DS game andSuper Mario 3D Land topped the 3DS chart. Football Manager 2012 was the year's best-selling PC game at retail, ahead of predecessor Football Manager 2011.
New UKIE CEO Jo Twist said: "In a year when overall consumer spending was down, the launch of so many high-quality titles showed that there was still strength in the UK's boxed-product games market.
"However, digital is where much future growth lies and it is therefore vital that we understand the size of this market. UKIE's digital charts, launching this year, will be a step towards measuring digital revenues."

January 11th, 2012, 23:43 Posted By: wraggster
Several UK retailers have said they would be prepared to share revenue from sales of second-hand games with publishers.
Speaking to MCV, a number of stores said they would be prepared to pass on a cut of their lucrative pre-owned business if publishers were to cut them some slack in return, either by reducing trade prices or doing away with online passes.
"We all know the business model in the industry is changing," said HMV in a statement. "So if there is any merit in this idea then it may be worth looking into."
Surrey-based indie Gamepod said: "As a retail store we would happily share part of the sale from a used game if we get something in return. Perhaps new games at better prices and no more online codes."
Cheshire independent Bits And Pieces added: "If you want to stop these one-time codes then yeah, fair enough, we'll share revenues. If publishers gave me a better deal, then maybe. The publishers are not the poor man here."
Chris Muckell from Dover-based Xpress Games was sceptical about whether publishers would even be interested in such a deal. "We'd definitely like to do this, but I don't see it being something publishers would implement," he said.
"With new releases dropping in price after just the second week, I'd have thought their investments would be better made in making money from DLC."

It was a case of the usual suspects this week as the top 20 failed to see any new entries. FIFA 12 starts the year by holding on the number one spot, followed by Battlefield 3, which swapped places with Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
In a month that traditionally sees a rise in dieting and gym memberships it was a huge week for fitness titles, with Zumba Fitness shooting back up the charts from 19 to 6. Zumba Fitness 2 saw a similar push, from 28 to 12, and EA Sports Active 2 rose from 37 to 20.
