[Shawn McCombs] has been spending some time refining his Xbox 360 rapid fire hack. This time around he’s got a lot more features, many of which we haven’t really seen before.
When we looked at the original project he had added an ATtiny85 which read a potentiometer to set the rapid fire speed for one of the buttons. This time around he’s opened up settings for individual weapons in the game. For instance, if you have a hand-gun and a rifle, you can set different rapid fire rates for each to account for the reload speed for those guns. He patched into the ring of LEDs on the controller in order to indicate which preset is currently chosen. There are three tactile switches on the underside of the controller too. One of them is a reset button which gets you back to your primary weapon and the default rapid fire rate. Settings for each weapon are saved to the EEPROM so you won’t lose them when the controller goes to sleep. Check out [Shawn's] description of the project in the video after the break.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency has closed down music website RnBXclusive.com and says those who used it could be fined and imprisoned.
SOCA threatened users with an ‘unlimited’ fine and up to ten years imprisonment as it claimed the music site shared files that were ‘stolen from the artists’, resulting in losses of £15m per year to businesses and artists.
A man has been arrested for fraud and is currently on bail pending enquiries. SOCA says the website obtained music – including unreleased tracks – by hacking.
One other music site has already taken itself offline following the news, another is considering following suit and a third says it is now only dealing in ‘legal music files’ going forwards.
The news comes after MegaUpload was shut by US piracy officials last month. The site’s owner Kim Dotcom was arrested.
BBC reports a takedown notice on the R ‘n’ B website read: “The majority of music files that were available via this site were stolen from the artists.
“If you have downloaded music using this website you may have committed a criminal offence which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine under UK law.
“SOCA has the capability to monitor and investigate you, and can inform your internet service provider of these infringements.”

The High Street may be having a tough time, but the UK games market is still incredibly healthy, MCV research shows today.
For the first time, we can reveal the true value of the UK games market, showing that consumers spent over £3bn on their hobby in 2011.
It's proof that mobile, downloads and licensed toys are picking up the slack as other parts of the market soften.
This impressive figure – £3.226bn to be precise - includes data on online, mobile, and merchandising.
And it flies in the face of conventional wisdom which says market shrinkage hit during the last 12 months.
In fact, when you combine data from some of the most respected research agencies, as we have below, you see game brands are more powerful than ever, even if the core High Street is facing some of its most challenging trading weeks.
Add online revenues to boxed market data and it’s clear digital made up 30 per cent of a £2bn UK software market last year.
2011 was also a watershed year for spin-off toys, DVDs and soundtracks, making £70m in revenue last year.

Circulation figures for the UK's specialist games mags fell across the board, according to the latest figures from audit bureau ABC.
Future's NGamer – recently rebranded to Nintendo Gamer – and Imagine's Play suffered the worst declines, losing more than a quarter of their readership compared to the same period last year. Official Xbox 360 Magazine and PC Gamer saw only minor dips, dropping by around 2,000 readers each.
Interestingly, the Moshi Monsters magazine that launched last year outperformed all games magazines with a circulation of over 143,000.
These figures do not include digital editions made available by Apple's Newsstand and other online marketplaces. In fact, when you take these into account Edge's circulation comes in at 26,626, showing only a five per cent drop rather than 12.
Edge was actually the 15th highest-selling magazine across all digital products, with a circulation of 2,183. Three other magazines made it into the Top 72 digital magazines ABC listed: PSM 3 with 407 readers, PC gamer with 379 and Xbox World 360 with 244.
However, it is important to note that ABC's digital figures are a monthly average taken for the whole of 2011 – Future's magazines have only been on the Apple store for three months, so their monthly readerships are actually higher than listed.
Here are the December 2011 ABCs in full, as compared to December 2010:
MICROSOFT
Official Xbox 360 Magazine (Future) - 58,610 (-3.7%, 2010: 60,859)

The University of Colorado at Boulder has been granted a $1.5 million research bursary to develop educational games designed to engage students in computer sciences.
The money comes from the National Science Foundation and will fund an evolution of the iDreams program - which uses game programming to encourage students to produce models of STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths) based phenomena.
That program eventually included 100 teaching staff and over 8000 pupils, spreading to Alaska, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming after being founded in Colorado.
The team behind the iDreams program will be the recipient of the new funding and will implement the new methodology in the university's teaching.

Konami-published PSP mouthful Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen No Toki is the new Japanese number one.
With sales of just under 62,000 units, Suikoden prevents PS Vita from securing its first chart-topper. SCE's Gravity Rush debuts in second place with over 43,000 sales, according to Media Create data posted on NeoGaf.
3DS is, of course, the week's top hardware, with sales of 67,500. Vita sales improved slightly on the previous week, climbing to just under 14,000 units, but Suikoden's release means Sony's new handheld is outsold by its predecessor.
01. Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen No Toki (Konami, PSP)
02. Gravity Rush (Sony, Vita)
03. Resident Evil Revelations (Capcom, 3DS)

05. Monster Hunter Tri G (Capcom, 3DS)

New age classification for games due 'by end of year'
Australia is to introduce an 18+ rating classification from the new Federal Minister for Home Affairs, Gamespot has reported.
Jason Clare indicated that he believes the bill will become legislation by 1st January 2013, after introducing the bill into parliament today.
It was initially unknown whether the previous Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor's departure would stall the introduction of the new classification, however it appears that the cabinet reshuffle has not altered the trajectory or pace of the enthusiasm for its commencement.

It's still about two months out, but when the 8-bitty hits shelves it might just become our favorite member of the iCadefamily. At the moment the Bluetooth gamepad is little more than a hand-made prototype with some AA batteries taped to the underside and a sticker printed on the office InkJet slapped on the front. As a production quality controller, though, it should be the perfect handheld button mashers for those of you with a taste for the retro. The boxy, rectangular 8-bitty may be wireless and the final version will likely sport six buttons -- still, you can't help but be whisked back to your days spent blowing into dusty Contra cartridges and tapping out the Konami code. We gave the early prototype a quick try and the D-pad and red buttons feel just like their '80s inspiration. Unfortunately they're not quite as responsive yet, but we're figuring there's still some kinks to be worked out before it ships this Spring. The 8-bitty should be launching exclusively with ThinkGeek for between $25 and $30. Check out the gallery below and the video after the break.

Remember those old wireless controllers made for the consoles of our youth like the NES and Super Nintendo? They didn’t work well, mostly owing to the fact they were built using the same infrared technology that is found in a remote control. Now that all the modern consoles are wireless, [micro] over at the nftgames forum decided toupdate his classic systems for wireless control.
The transmitters and receivers are built around an nRF24L01+ radio module that operates in the 2.4 GHz band. [micro] has the process of converting his controllers down to a science. He cuts the cord and wires the controller up to an AVR running at 16 MHz. The AVR sends this to the receiver where the button presses are sent through the original controller port. Basically, [micro] recreated a WaveBird controller for his NES, SNES, Saturn and N64.
The controllers are powered by internal lithium batteries, but the charging ICs are too expensive to put in each controller. To solve this problem, [micro] crafted a smallexternal charging circuit that plugs into a 3.5mm jack on each controller. Check out [micro]‘s controller demo after the break.

While the future of UK specialist retailer GAME is uncertain, many in the retail community across Europe are beginning to ask where customers will migrate if the chain reduces its presence - or disappears entirely - from the High Street.
Data from analyst firm NPD suggests what many might expect - the average GAME consumer is more likely to shop online than anywhere else, with Amazon singled out as one of the most popular retailers for regular GAME customers.
"We were in Europe talking to folks and given some of the publicity that has been out about the struggles of GAME the retailer, we were asked, if GAME goes away, where do we think that consumer will go?" said Anita Frazier, analyst at NPD.
"We looked at GAME consumers and asked where else do they buy software? In fact the GAME consumer was very much more likely to shop at dot.com websites than other consumers of other retailers," she added.

After so many weeks of FIFA dominance there's another change at the top, as RPG Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning charged in to number one, pushing Final Fantasy XIII-2 down to second place. Another new entry, The Darkness 2, took third.
The only new entry in the top 20 this week was Catherine, which sneaked in at 20. Not a bad result for a niche puzzle-platformer.

Update: The Raspberry Pi Foundation has asked us to clarify the availability of the device. The developer version (essentially a Linux PC) should be going out to customers this month and details will be posted on the Foundation's website. The separate consumer version (which includes kid-friendly software and is intended for educational use) will be cased and be, essentially, a piece of consumer electronics. The Raspberry Pi Foundation hopes to release this latter device in Q3 this year. Both versions will be available for sale to anyone.Original story: Elite co-creator David Braben hopes the consumer version of the intriguing Raspberry Pi device - the $25 credit-card sized computer - will be made available to the public in the third quarter of this year.A pre-order system for the uncased, developer version of the Raspberry Pi will be unveiled in the near future, Braben told Eurogamer."We've not got a pre-order [system] for the commercial one yet because we need to determine the price, determine roughly when it's going to be," he said."We have a good idea that it will be sort of in Q3 this year, but we can't be certain. There are a lot of variables in terms of what we need to get ready. We don't know completely but we're moving very quickly."The Raspberry Pi Foundation hopes to offer children (of all ages), the opportunity to learn hands-on computing skills by creating software on the low cost, credit-card sized device. It's a venture that's well-timed given the UK government's recent commitment to teaching core practical IT skills in classrooms - rather than the use of word processors, and the essential Excel skills needed to perfect one's Eve Online trading spreadsheet.A full feature detailing our visit to Frontier Developments to look at the device will be published next week. In the meantime, we'll have a short reader Q&A appearing on our Facebook page later on today.

Children's social gaming sites such as Moshi Monsters accounted for almost ten per cent of all video game TV advertising last month.
From January 1st to 22nd 2011 there were just two of these sites advertising on UK TV, Moshi Monsters and Fight My Monster. These accounted for 5.9 per cent, or 45.7 TVRs, of all games and consoles TV advertising. In terms of children’s TVRs, this share increases to 24 per cent.
As the chart below demonstrates, from January 1st to 22nd 2012, activity in this sector has increased year-on-year. Five sites have been on air in 2012, which have accounted for 9.8 per cent of all games and consoles TV advertising. In terms of children’s TVRs, this share increases to 36.7 per cent. A TVR represents one per cent of a target audience. It can go over 100 if some viewers watch the same ad twice.
Overall, TV advertising in this market has risen 114 per cent (and 136 per cent in terms of children’s TVRs). This is well ahead of the games and consoles growth figure of a healthy 30 per cent, or 55 per cent in terms of children’s TVRs.

Both hardware and software video game sales were down by a great deal in January, according to the latest report from NPD. Both categories dropped 38% year over year in the US, and video games sales in total dropped from $1.14 billion in January of 2011 to $750 million this past month. NPD's Liam Callahan attributes the drops to a lack of new launches: Last January, Microsoft's Kinect propped up hardware sales, and Dead Space 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, and DC Universe Online did the same for software, but there weren't equivalent launches in the market this year.
The full list of the top ten titles is after the break. Just Dance 3 held down the number two spot, again landing in front of the very popular Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Zumba Fitness 2 also made it into the top ten, but Activision'sSkylanders: Spyro's Adventure is likely the most important game for January.
In addition to landing on the list at 8th, Skylanders is seeing huge sales in the accessories category, making up 22% of total accessory sales overall. The game's single character pack was also the best selling accessory during the month of January, and these numbers should bode well for the series and its future iterations.
Finally, despite that big drop in hardware sales, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg points out that the Xbox 360 has remained the highest-selling console on the market, selling 270,000 units with a 49% market share.

As a senior in high school, [Owen] has been waiting to hear from the colleges he applied to for months now. Some of his applications wanted a mid-year report to see if he didn’t come down with senioritis. [Owen] realized these colleges allowed additional materials beyond a high school transcript, so he built a tiny video game that shows his electrical and programming skills. The Demomite, as [Owen] calls his build, is an amazing piece of work. The entire system is based around an ATtiny2313 with a measly 2kB of program memory. Aside from a graphic LCD from Sparkfun and a repurposed NES controller, there isn’t much else to the build. As a study in minimalism and simplicity, [Owen] gets a big congrats from us.The entire game fits in the 2kB of flash on the ATtiny, mostly due to coding the entire thing in assembly. You can check out [Owen]‘s time-lapse construction video, software demo, and the video he sent to colleges after the break.
