Sega's UK and digital boss John Clark predicts that the digital games market will match or even surpass boxed games in terms of revenue by 2015.
Speaking at London Games Conference today, Clark says that although we are seeing a shift from the packaged goods business to digital business, digital needs retail alongside it to grow.
"We are moving from a linear industry," he said. "There are new business models. And every time a new content delivery method appears, a new business model appears.
"The more questions that you ask, the more questions that you get."
He used his own franchises to demonstrate what he has learnt about the boxed sector. Citing the Total War PC franchise, Clark said that retail sales have been erratic, but thanks to DLC the franchise has grown.
But it needed the boxed game in the first place to grow it. He revealed that the boxed versions of Total War still sell more than the digital ones.
"If you don't have a DLC strategy, you probably need it," he told attendees.

Zynga, PopCap, Rovio, EA and Gameloft are among the companies publishing games on Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet device.
The Kindle Fire launches on November 15, and will also support apps from Netflix, Rhapsody, Pandora, Twitter, Facebook, and "several thousand" others.
"We started talking to app developers everywhere the day we introduced Kindle Fire, and the response has been overwhelming," said Dave Limp, vice president of Amazon's Kindle division.
"And this is only the beginning - we're adding more apps and games every day across all categories."
All Kindle Fire apps are "Amazon-tested" to ensure quality. They will be available through the Amazon Appstore, and can be used on any other Android-based device.
Games available at launch include Words With Friends, Plants Vs. Zombies, Cut The Rope, Fruit Ninja and Doodle Jump.
Public interest in the Kindle Fire, which is widely seen as the first credible competitor to the iPad, hasexceeded Amazon's expectations. In October, the company announced that it was "building millions more than we'd already planned."

A new study that shows thanks to the rise of the smartphone, Apple and Android now has the largest share of the portable gaming market, ahead of traditional devices like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.
In statistics provided by analytics firm Flurry, iOS and Android had a 58 per cent share of the revenue from US portable game software. The Nintendo DS had only 36 per cent, with Sony's PSP trailing at just 6 per cent.
In 2009 mobile games took just 19 per cent of the market, rising to 34 per cent in 2010, while Nintendo has seen the opposite, falling from a dominant 70 per cent in 2009.
The study calculated the changing revenue totals for the portable gaming market at $2.7 billion for 2009, $2.5 billion in 2010 and $3.3 billion in 2011. Those numbers, combined with cheap and easy access to games through App Stores, and the rise of free-to-play revenues, appear to make for a profitable combination.
Flurry also points out the there are around 250 million iOS devices and 190 million Android devices currently in circulation.
What the study doesn't make clear is whether or not the figures take into account the recent 3DS release, nor does it acknowledge the relative age of the Sony PSP, which is soon to be replaced by the PlayStation Vita, a factor that could stop consumers investing in software for a machine they're planning to replace.
The figures were compiled by Flurry from NPD reports, public data and information from mobile devices. Figures for November and December 2011 were estimated, based previous performance ratios.

Bookies are already paying out on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as the UK's Christmas number one game - only twelve hours after it went on sale.Modern Warfare 3 went on sale in the UK at midnight last night, and Activision is yet to announce sales figures, but that hasn't stopped Paddy Power from paying out on the FPS, which was the clear 1/5 favourite to be the best-selling game over Christmas in the UK.So inevitable was Call of Duty's dominance that Paddy Power shortened the odds of it being Christmas number one to "practically unbackable" 1/16."At odds of 1/16 this contest is well and truly over," said Ken Robertson from Paddy Power. "On its day of release we are happy to crown Call of Duty: MW3 this year's undisputed champion!"As an alternative, you can now bet on the best-selling game over Christmas that isn't Modern Warfare 3. FIFA 12 is the odds-on 10/11 favourite ahead of Gears of War 3 at 2/1 and Pro Evolution Soccer at 9/1.Will Modern Warfare 3 be the best-selling video game of all time? It looks likely. Both Game and Amazon say it was their most pre-ordered game ever.

The cold, wet London weather couldn't dampen the spirits of Infinity Ward last night as it celebrated the launch of Modern Warfare 3 at the stroke of midnight. The game releases after months of verbal warfare between publishing executives at EA and Activision, as the former threw its weight behind Battlefield 3 in an attempt to see Call of Duty, in the words of CEO John Riccitiello, "rot from the core".But speaking to Eurogamer TV on the green carpet, Infinity Ward exec producer Mark Rubin hit out at the "silly publisher talk", insisting: "When both games succeed it's better for the industry as a whole. It's not just us - we want the gaming industry to succeed because the better the gaming industry does the better we all do. We root for everybody."He added: "Honestly, it's the fans you want to listen to. They're gamers, they're going to play both games, both games are great. Much respect for everyone involved on the DICE side and I think they feel the same way with us. We're friends with them. It's not what they portray on the EA side."Rubin also touched on the turmoil that rocked the early days of the project, which saw Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired by Activision over alleged breach of contract, prompting a mass exodus of over 40 IW staff."That's what makes this whole event so much sweeter," he said. "We really did struggle through a very difficult time, we powered through it, we got a lot of great help from the Sledgehammer guys to be here not only with a finished game, but a game we feel is the best we've made yet."Rubin also defended Modern Warfare 3 against the latest controversy to be sparked by the series, following the leak of footage depicting a young girl and her mother being killed in an explosion."It's out of context so it's hard to say," he said. "When you play the game you'll realise why it's there and where it sits. When we design our single-player we've always gone for movies as our inspiration and not necessarily other games and so everything we do is geared around storytelling, and that sort of cinematic experience and the 'No Russian' level and anything you've seen in the leaks is the same thing."

Pro Evolution Soccer has "definitely lost ground" to FIFA in the UK, Konami has admitted to Eurogamer. However, statistics as eye-popping as FIFA 12 outselling PES 2012 by 25:1 here - as quoted by EA man Keith Ramsdale - "don't give us the full picture"."In the UK we've definitely lost ground," Murphy told Eurogamer this afternoon. "But that doesn't give us the full picture across all territories."I think right now, there's been a fair bit of manipulation of statistics to suit people."When you say 'on the back foot', I totally disagree," he added. "We're now on the front foot in terms of quality of product and in terms of innovation. We believe sales will follow."Philippe Rapin, head of mobile development at Konami Europe, said the mobile version of PES 2012 was "the most downloaded game in 50 countries upon launch and for several weeks after that".Eurogamer's FIFA 12 review awarded 9/10, while Eurogamer's PES 2012 review awarded 8/10.FIFA 12 sold 3.2 million copies in one week. PES 2012 only managed to debut fifth in the UK games chart - two spaces behind FIFA 12 in its third week on sale. But as Murphy implied, the UK is not the only territory PES competes in. PES has a strong following in mainland Europe, and historically dominates in Japan. But how long can Konami afford to keep annually stepping into the ring with EA? Does Konami have the financial reserves to slug away at a seemingly invincible FIFA, year after year?"For the time being I don't see a change in the way that PES is released," answered Murphy, when quizzed about the annual release strategy. But, he added, "That may change as the market develops."

American gamers buy more used and digitally distributed games than their European doppelgangers, according to a study released by market analysis firm NewZoo. The organization's statistical findings show that 23 percent of console games purchased in the U.S. are used; slightly more than the European market where used games account for 20 percent of total console sales.
Digitally distributed titles rank lower in both regions, taking up 12 percent of the console market in America and 9 percent in Europe. That 12 percent, by the way, represents approximately $960 million, on account of 54 percent of American console owners reportedly spending an average of $49 a year on console downloads.
American PC gaming culture appears to have adopted the idea of digital distribution much faster than the console market, as an estimated 58 percent of all PC gaming dollars are spent on digitally distributed games or DLC. Now, we're no market analysts, but we think the disparity between PC and console download shares has a lot to do with PC gaming's readily available plethora of hats.

The man who is credited with fathering the modern video games industry has delivered a damning verdict of the modern games market.
Ralph Baer, who in the ‘60s designed the prototypes for went on to become the world’s first console, the Magnavox Odyssey, is displeased with the violent nature of today’s triple-A titles.
“I think it’s a disgrace,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune. “What I created got abominated.”
That’s not to say that Baer regrets the part he played in the video gaming revolution, however.
“All I did was come up with what I thought was a fun idea that was the result of a little box that was attached to a television set,” he added. “It just grew and grew and grew. Nobody realised, even at that time, that we were on this geometric curve that would go straight up to heaven.
“It was unforeseeable; it was fantastic. I’m glad it happened. And if I hadn’t had started it, someone else would have.”

November 7th, 2011, 22:02 Posted By: wraggster
Feargus Urquhart, the CEO of developer Obsidian, has criticised the use of the Online Pass in the industry’s battle against pre-owned video games.
“One of the recent issues is not putting the full game in the package and requiring downloadable content to move on. Also, including DLC in the package that will have to be repurchased for secondhand buyers,” he told GameSpot.
“I think you have to go in and forget those gimmicks, and say, ‘How do I make them want to keep the game on the shelf?’ I think each genre has a way to do it. Battlefield and Call of Duty have it in multiplayer with maps, rankings, leveling up, and unlocks. There are different things, but the idea is making people feel, ‘I want to keep on playing it’.”
Urquhart goes on to note that this is a particular challenge for genres such as the RPG, which don’t have hugely popular online multiplayer modes to fall back on like an FPS or sports game.
But that’s not to say it can’t be done.
“We come up with things to make players want to keep on playing it. It was never developed this way, but it's funny how it has become a way to do this,” he added.
“By having a good and evil track, like Knights of the Old Republic II, I can play as a light or dark Jedi. I may play through as a light Jedi, but I know that I could play through as a dark Jedi. So I put it back on my shelf and I don't take it back to GameStop.
“If I play Fallout: New Vegas for 50 hours, but there are all these other quests, and there's this whole other area I didn't go to, and online there are people talking about all these things that you could have done all these different ways, I'll feel like ‘Wow, I could play this game again’, because there is all this stuff I didn't get.
“And knowing that, publishers announce DLC plans the day the game comes out. And now, as a player who hasn't experienced everything yet, I know there are these new stories, and I'm going to be able to level up my character and get better stuff, be more of a hero. The game is going to go back on my shelf, not back to GameStop.”

Best Buy Europe, the joint venture between Best Buy Inc. and Carphone Warehouse, has been shuttered after just 18 months in business. In that short amount of time, it lost £80 million ($127 million), largely due to consumer belt-tightening and increased competition from cheaper online retailers. Up to 1,100 jobs will be lost at the eleven UK stores currently open in Thurrock, Bristol and Wolverhampton, among other locations, bringing to an end the company's ambitious plan to open 200 stores across Europe. At the same time, the US giant declared it would buy out its European partner's stake in the Best Buy Mobilechain as it continues to pull out of unprofitable foreign operations.
Update: We've got some more on what this deal means. Buying out Carphone Warehouse is gonna cost $1.3 billion plus $8 million annually for five years. The two aren't splitting up for good, since they're also starting another joint venture called Global Connect (good luck with that one, fellas). Separately, the company announced it was grabbing mindShift technology, a cloud service provider for small and medium-sized enterprises for a cool $167 million.

Limited edition games sold only in GAME and HMV are a restrictive trade practice, say indie retailers.
This includes products such as the £59.99 Forza Motorsport 4 Limited Edition exclusive to GAME and Gamestation, and the Assassin’s Creed: Revelations Animus Edition – which is for sale in the UK only via GameStop online.
Simon Mitchell from Eclipse Home Entertainment told MCV: “I was annoyed with the Forza 4 Limited Edition which had extra cars. When my customers found out I didn’t have it, it turned a lot of people away. They left.
“I would’ve liked the opportunity to buy it. But what I really do want is a level playing field.”
A leading indie retailer added: “I was disappointed that GAME Group’s prediction for a good Christmas was based upon how many titles they had as exclusive special editions. This effectively stitches up all the other retailers, and as far as I’m concerned this is restrictive trade.”
Sam Semaan from N1 Games is more optimistic.
“It doesn’t bother us,” he told MCV. “We had the opportunity to stock the Gears of War 3 Limited Edition game. We ask our customers what they want first.”

Rockstar has for the first time spoken about the recently announced Grand Theft Auto V.
The first ever trailer for the game was released late yesterday afternoon.
As we know, the game returns to many of the locations found in PS2 hit GTA: San Andreas. Rockstar describes it as “the largest and most ambitious game” it has ever created, offering a “bold new direction” in open-world freedom and storytelling.
Online multiplayer has also been confirmed.
Little else about the game is revealed in the new press release, with Rockstar simply saying that “Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California”.
There’s no word yet on platforms or release dates, though Xbox 360, PS3 and PC are the likeliest bet with a possible release date of Q3 or Q4 2012.
"Grand Theft Auto V is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe," Rockstar founder Sam Houser stated. "We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans."

Battlefield 3 may already be sitting on the shelves of some 5m gamers, but EA knows that’s not the end of the challenge.
With Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 being released worldwide on Tuesday November 8th, it’s safe to assume that at least a proportion of this user base will trade their copies of EA’s shooter in against its rival.
Indeed, many retailers are banking on it.
Is there anything EA can do to stop it? Executive VP Patrick Soderlund certainly thinks so.
"We all respect what Call of Duty brings and what they're going to come with, and I think that we have an industry-leading multiplayer game that will make people want to stay with us, frankly," he told IGN.
"If you look at all the reviews that we've gotten, not a single one that I've seen has been negative towards the multiplayer. In fact, many state that the multiplayer is the multiplayer experience to have, the best in the world.
"And if I can continue to harness that and work on improving that and give the consumers more of that, then hopefully they're going to feel loyal to us and stay."

It was a big week for the UK games market, with the total value up by 36 per cent to £39.1m, and unit sales up by 31 per cent to 1,300,858.
The reason for the sales surge? Battlefield 3. The game is now the tenth fastest-selling game in Chart-Track history, and the most successful Battlefield launch to date.
Electronic Arts’ latest first-person shooter did so well, it outsold the week one performances of all previous Battlefield games combined. That’s 17 individual releases in total.
The blockbusters that will be included in next week’s sales data include Sony’s Uncharted 3, Sega’s Sonic Generations and Activision’s Goldeneye 007: Reloaded.

Ten of the 20 best-selling games in Europe this year have been published on Nintendo formats.
The platform holder revealed the top-selling games for the first nine months of 2011 in Europe, the US and Japan as part of its half-year financial results briefing. The data was taken from GfK International, NPD and MediaCreate research, according toGamaSutra.
In Europe, Wii and DS accounted for ten of the top 20 games and seven of the Top Ten, including six consecutive games between No.2 and No.7. The highest ranking title was Nintendo's Wii Sports Resort - second only to FIFA 12 on PS3.
Other Nintendo-based games included Pokémon Black and White, Wii Party, Wii Fit Plus, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros (both on Wii and DS), as well as third party hits Zumba Fitness and Just Dance 2. No 3DS titles made the Top 20.
Japan was the format holder's second best-performing market, with eight Wii, DS and 3DS titles in the Top 20, led by Square Enix's Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional on DS at No.3.
The US was only slightly behind with seven Wii and DS titles in the Top 20 best-selling games of January to September 2011. Ubisoft topped this chart with Just Dance 2 on Wii, followed by Nintendo's Pokémon White in second place.
