Benjamin J. Heckendorn is nostranger to game pads designed for people with disabilities, but the macro controller he just whipped up for Patrick Crowley (pictured above) might be his most impressiveaccessibility hack yet. On the latest episode of his show the modding extraordinaire crafts a breakout box that allows a complex set of commands to be triggered with just the touch of a button or foot switch. The box at the heart of the project is powered by a PIC microcontroller that takes inputs from a series of modular switches (up to eight) and turns them into virtual button presses that are fed to an Xbox 360 through a standard controller. In addition to being able to swap in eight different inputs, each one can be programmed to perform a different macro. We won't ruin all of the fun -- check out the PR and full episode after the break to watch everything from Ben Heck's holiday epiphany through the final testing.

December 21st, 2011, 23:42 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's president of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida, believes that Japanese gamers are now more open to Western games.
Speaking to the European PlayStation Blog, Yoshida revealed that Everybody's Golf and Uncharted: Golden Abyss were the most pre-ordered games ahead of the Vita's Japanese launch last week.
According to Yoshida, the prominence of the US-developed Uncharted in a line-up dominated by Japanese games is indicative of a larger trend in the region.
"Japanese people traditionally have a strong local preference, particularly with the Manga style look of characters that they love," he said. "But as technology and presentation advances in games like Uncharted and Call of Duty, they are rightly seeing their quality."
The Japanese launch of the PlayStation Vita was accompanied by 24 games at a range of different price-points. Yoshida claims that this variety in software is a key focus for the Vita, and Sony developed the hardware with ease of development in mind.
"When I saw new developers coming in and getting straight to work on those systems when they had matured, I could not believe how quickly they were getting their games up and running. I have never seen anything like it before."
This also extends to dev teams of different sizes. Yoshida admitted that his personal favourite Vita game is Sound Shapes, an experimental music game almost entirely created by Everyday Shooter developer Jonathan Mak.
"I'm a fan of these small developers," Yoshida added. "The best thing is that they have experience in every part of planning, developing and releasing. It's not like they have left school and gone to work in a team of 100, only ever working on one particular aspect of their game."
"They don't follow the traditional game conventions; some of them are very vocal about trying to break those rules. They are the next generation and they will be changing the landscape of gaming long after I have retired."

Digital sales and new payment methods outpaced new physical software retail sales in the US in the third quarter.
According to the NPD Group's US Games Market Dynamics report, consumers spent $1.3 billion on new physical video and PC game software in Q3.
However, a further $1.64 billion was spent on digital game downloads, DLC, social games, mobile games, used games and game rentals.
"New physical retail sales had a rough third quarter," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "Increases in sales from some of these other monetisation methods, and full game and add-on digital downloads in particular, only partially offset the decline seen in the new physical retail channel."
The total spend on hardware, content and accessories for the period was $4.2 billion, around 11 per cent less than Q3 2010.

The Kindle Fire and Barnes and Noble Nook tablets are similar enough and close enough together in price that they ought to be fighting market share and one-upping each other in terms of features they offer users. But the latest OS upgrades to both gadgets claims to be an 'upgrade' while actually taking functionality away: both remove the ability to root the device."A more balanced way of looking at it is that the updates fix known local privilege escalation vulnerabilities. This might be more of an issue for people wanting to hack on the Nook Tablet: its bootloader is confirmed locked, but reports lean toward the Kindle Fire having an unlocked bootloader letting anyone flash their own software without needing to gain root first.

This time of year, you can count on two things: long lines anywhere you can purchase goods and/or services outside of your home, and sales at those capitals of consumerism. Sega's hitching itself to the sales star now by slashing prices on its digital wares across PSN, XBLA and iOS starting this week.
PSN's lineup includes healthily discounted classics, added savings for PlayStation Plus subscribers and a smattering of newer stuff on the cheap until January 3: Daytona USA, Sega Rally Arcade, Sonic Adventure, Renegade Ops and more. On the iOS side, classic titles make up the majority of what's on sale for $0.99; Golden Axe 2 and 3, Chu Chu Rocket, Streets of Rage 2 and 3, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, and Sega's newest iOS game, Brick People, are on sale until January 9.
Xbox Live Arcade users get the least amount of variety -- only Renegade Opsand After Burner Climax are on sale. You can download each at their reduced price of 800 MS Points ($10) and 400 MS Points ($5) respectively until January 2.

Just when you thought it was safe to root your Kindle Fire with a single click, Amazon has clamped down on homebrewing enthusiasts. The company has begun pushing out an update for the $199 tablet that breaks the root, disabling the SuperOneClick utility in the process. If you've rooted your tablet and are still running a version of the Amazon-flavored Gingerbread, you're susceptible to the update any time you're connected to a WiFi network. However, if you've already made the leap to another version of Android, such as CM7, you can bypass this and any future software updates. There are some improvements with 6.2.1 though, as smoother scrolling, password protected WiFi use and the ability to remove recently used items from the home screen carousel are among the upgrades. If you're looking to read up on the issue before taking action, roll up your sleeves and hit the links below.

December 20th, 2011, 23:10 Posted By: wraggster
MCV is reporting that UK game retailers took £73.9 million during the past week on game sales alone.
The total number of games sold hit 2,978,493, which represents an increase over the previous week's figures. Year-on-year, however, sales were down compared to the same week in 2010.
Unsurprisingly, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which became the Christmas number one this week, was the biggest seller. Increased sales of Just Dance 3, Modern Warfare 3, Saints Row: The Third,Battlefield 3 and Need For Speed: The Run were also significant contributors.
The total means the week was the second biggest for the year so far in terms of sales, only beaten by the week in November during which Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 launched helping to net £120.8 million and a total of 3,289,421 sales.
The figures discount digital sales, so Skyrim's record breaking performance on Steam has not been included.

Strong review scores, a big marketing campaign and a recent price cut that saw prices for the game dropping to below £15 have all helped to secure Bethesda the number one spot on the UK software chart for Christmas.
This is a break in traditions for the charts, which has seen EA or Activision secure the top position since 2003.
Skyrim was secure in the top spot, but the two and three positions were a closer race with family title Just Dance 3 just edging out Modern Warfare 3 to secure Ubisoft i's best Christmas chart position since 2007.
Price cuts have helped boost sales of Saints Row: The Third, and similar offers and new DLC have also helped Battlefield 3 retain its position at number 6.
The only new entry in the top 20 was the Moshi Monsters spin off Moshling Zoo, published on Nintendo DS by Activision.

December 19th, 2011, 21:32 Posted By: wraggster
Consumer electronics vendor Mad Catz has launched a new stereo gaming headset for the Xbox 360, called the Trigger.
Distributed by Enta in the UK, the headset includes precision balanced 40mm neodymium drivers and an in- line audio controller allowing gamers to separately adjust volume and in-game chat levels, and includes all cables necessary to connect to any Xbox 360.
The microphone can be bent into a position that's optimal for picking up the user’s voice. The design also allows the mic to fold up and out of the way when not in use.
The set has a padded, adjustable headrail which extends an extra 1.25 inches on either side to accommodate a wide range of head sizes and features soft, pliable earcups which swivel to provide a comfortable around-the-neck resting position.
A dial on the in-line audio controller can cancel in-game chatter from other players, while game volume can be adjusted separately.
Darren Richardson, the president and chief executive officer of Mad Catz Interactive stated: “The Trigger is the second of our co-branded headsets to be released for the Xbox 360 and we are excited to bring high quality professional gaming audio to a mass market consumer in time for the holiday season.”

December 17th, 2011, 01:21 Posted By: wraggster
Rockstar has revealed why Grand Theft Auto 3 had a silent protagonist - ten years after the ground-breaking open world gangster game launched.GTA 3's infamous protagonist, Claude, kept his mouth shut throughout the entire game. Rockstar said this was mostly because it had other things to worry about during development, and "this did not seem like a major issue"."It may now seem obvious that people should all talk in games, but this was not necessarily the case in 2001, certainly not in an open world game," wrote the studio on Rockstar Newswire."We were making up a lot of procedures as we went along, and we decided that the NPCs (Non Playable Characters) should talk and we would have to figure out how to make them talk (using motion captured cutscenes, something that had never really been done before, at least not on the scale we were doing it)."So we decided that the game's protagonist would not talk, partly to aid people identifying with him, but mostly because we had so many other problems to solve and this did not seem like a major issue."Rockstar introduced a talking lead character for Grand Theft Auto Vice City, its 2002 follow-up. In that game you play Tommy Vercetti (voiced by Ray Liotta), a member of the Liberty City mafia."We started to discuss introducing a talking lead character when working on Vice City, but it was a lot of work," Rockstar said."While the structure of GTA3 may seem obvious or natural now, and the use of cutscenes made in the game's engine that look and feel like the game may seem simple and easy, it really was not the case back in 2001 when we had to figure out all of these things for the first time."Oh and in San Andreas, CJ calls Claude a mute because he does not talk and CJ finds this unnerving."This week Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto 3: 10 Year Anniversary Edition for iOS and Android devices. Grand Theft Auto 5 is expected to launch next year.

Remember that Vengeance line of gaming products that Corsair outed a few months back? We'll forgive you if not, and we'll also take this opportunity to refresh your memory while affirming that the company is shipping the bulk of 'em out just in time for the holidays. The Vengeance K60 and Vengeance K90 gaming keyboards and the Vengeance M60 and Vengeance M90 laser gaming mice and all clad in aluminum, with the K Series aimed at first-person shooter loyalists and the Ms aimed at those who just generally want to be awesome. You can catch up on the nitty-gritty just after the break, but here's the bad news: the K90, K60, M90 and M60 will go for $129, $109, $79 and $69 in order of mention.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is six years old. The Nintendo Wii is five years old, and so is the Sony PlayStation 3. All three are due for an overhaul (can you imagine gaming on a PC that's half a decade old, or more?), and while they're still popular gaming platforms, consoles are really starting to shine as streaming media centers. According to market research firm Nielsen, streaming video on game consoles is up over last year. Xbox 360 owners now use their consoles to stream video 14 percent of the time, which is almost as much as PS3 users (15 percent). But it's the Wii that sees the most time as a streaming device, with Wii owners using their consoles to stream video a third of the time.

It's been a long, long time since I posted console hardware sales stats from old Japan but anyway here are the latest set of figures. This covers sales between December 5th to 11th of last week:- [*]

Wow, it's astounding that the PS2 is still selling out there. Perhaps Sony is still making new ones? Or perhaps it's used sales, I don't know. DS Lite, that used to sell hundreds of thousands each week, now it's a low of 14. No surprise though, the 3DS is the latest today and could sell more if more good games for it continue to come in.

Black Friday may be long gone, but that's not stopping Toys R Us from offering some last minute Christmas doorbuster deals this weekend. This Friday through Sunday, customers will receive a $60 gift card with the purchase of an Xbox 360 Kinect console bundle. You can also snag a $25 gift card with the purchase of any two video games priced $29.99 or higher.
Next week, from December 20 through 10pm on Christmas Eve (sorry Toys R Us employees!), the retailer will also offer a pair of deals on Skylanders and the 3DS.
First up, those who purchase a 3DS (in-store only) will snag a $35 gift card. Second, purchasing the Skylanders starter pack will net customers a free 3DS game worth up to $39.99. It's worth noting that the offer is valid only for "select" 3DS titles, though the press release makes no mention of which titles are exempted. Regardless, there's potential for some serious holiday savings if either of these things are on your list.
Just remember, once you buy Skylanders, you will keep buying Skylanders.

Contributions to Child's Play Charity have reached $1.95 million this year, following the Child's Play Gala and Auction. The event raised another $351,000 for the charity that donates toys, games and cash for hospitalized children.
Standout bids from this year's event were $21,000 for the life-sized Half-LifeGravity Gun, the rare Nintendo World Championships Grey #60 for $11,500 and a guest spot in a Penny Arcade strip for $10,000.
"The gala and auction always brings in a lot of donations, but it is just one part of Child's Play," remarked Child's Play Charity's Jamie Dillion. "The real heroes are all the gamers who organize local events and send in individual donations that account for the vast majority of what we raise every year. We couldn't do this without all of their support."
Child's Play brought in $2,294,317.53 in 2010, a record for the organization. After surpassing the $1.5 million mark earlier this week, the charity is on track to crack the $2 million mark again.
You can donate by heading to the Child's Play site.

Amazon tends not to be all that specific when it comes to Kindle sales figures, so it's always nice to see a number from the retail giant, even if it's as broad as the one it released today. According to the company, Kindle products have moved at a rate of "more than one million per week" for the past three weeks. That number includes the currently available members of the e-reading family, including the fourth generation Kindle, the Kindle Touch (both the WiFi and 3G versions) and the Fire. According to Amazon, the latter is "the most successful product we've ever launched," having topped the company's sales charts for 11 weeks. Press info after the jump.

Argos may have thrown in the towel, but other mass-market retailers insist their own used games ventures are fighting fit.
MCVuk.com broke the story that Argos had completely withdrawn from the pre-owned video games market last week.
And critics told MCV last month that mass-market retailers – including the supermarkets – have failed to make an impact in used games. But Asda and Tesco have dismissed the concerns, telling MCV that their customers demand pre-owned.
“I would not read anything into Argos pulling out of pre-owned having any bearing on how the model is performing in the generalist sector,” said Asda’s head of games Andrew Thompson.
“Although pre-owned is a very small part of Asda’s games business, our customers like the fact that during such tough economic times they can trade in to save money and buy more new games.”
Games buyer Mark Burgess affirmed that Tesco was still committed to its used games offering, adding: “Argos pulling out of pre-owned will have no effect on our current plans.” Thompson added that Argos’ trade-in business model wasn’t suited to the second-hand market.
“I thought that the Argos model was very different to the normal trade-in operations in the UK,” he said. “Products that could be traded in were limited in range and the traded-in stock was ultimately sold online.”
Selected Argos stores first began trading in pre-owned titles back in March 2010. The company later rolled this out to all outlets in July 2010, offering store credit when consumers traded in selected titles.
Asda, Tesco and Argos were among the first mass-market retailers to launch pre-owned offerings.

UK videogame retailers are slashing prices of software due to poor sales of new releases.
According to MCV, UK retailers have sold 8.77 million games since the launch of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on November 8 - 1.4 million fewer than were sold during the same period last year.
This has led to some eye-catching deals, such as Game Group's reduction to £22.49 of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which propelled the Bethesda RPG to the top of the UK chart earlier this week, its sales rising 145 per cent.
The head of one global publisher's UK wing said: "A lot of games are not performing as they should. And so retail wants to cut prices to shift stock. It's the reality in the UK. But when you see big sellers like Skyrim discounted, you do end up scratching your head. It doesn't make sense."
"It's like the January sales have started early," one retailer said. "It could have a negative impact on how consumers view pricing."
