The UK digital sales charts have been a long time coming, but Sega’s John Clark is confident the industry will be satisfied.
The managing director for Sega’s UK arm also heads up the publisher’s digital projects, and has been involved with the creation of the digital charts from the beginning. While there is still no word on an official launch outside of ‘early 2012’, Clark promises that “significant progress” has been made.
“Asking companies to share their precious digital sales figures with their closest competitors was an ambitious objective,” he said. "But UKIE has managed to get support from a substantial number of publishers and digital distributors and I am confident that the results will be worth the wait.”
The publisher boss went on to re-emphasise the importance of introducing such sales metrics, claiming they are “vital” to better understanding the changing games market.
“It is no exaggeration to say that many businesses use the current charts as a key business planning tool,” said Clark. “But their weakness is that they do not include any digital sales. As this channel grows, it is vital that we measure performance of the whole market, our own products and also our performance against other companies’ products.
“There are also a plethora of firms only on digital platforms that are not getting the much-needed exposure they deserve.”

The latest Call Of Duty game outsold high-profile new Japanese releases to debut at number one on the country’s weekly sales chart.
Published by Square Enix in Japan, the subtitled shooter shifted 180,000 copies on PS3, while the Xbox 360 edition placed at number seven with 30,000 sales.
It comfortably outperformed Japanese developed new releases Ni No Kuni and One Piece Gigant Battle, which entered at numbers two and three with 116,062 and 67,032 sales respectively, as well as 2010’s Call Of Duty: Black Ops, which topped the Japanese chart in its first week with 128,922 sales on PS3, Andriasang reports.
Saints Row: The Third for PS3 debuted at number five, with the Xbox 360 version at number 14, one spot ahead of fellow new release Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary. The only other new title to make the top 20 was the PS3 version of Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 at number ten.
On the hardware front, 3DS retained the top spot, managing to outsell PSP and PS3 combined, despite sales of the handheld dipping below the 100,000 mark for the first time in three weeks.
Sales of the two Sony systems almost doubled week-over-week, with each topping 40,000 units aided by the release of new colour models.

N-key rollover (NKRO) is the gaming equivalent of musical polyphony, except it's less about creating beautiful harmonies and more about meleeing that camper in the corner while taking evasive maneuvers, reloading your AK, barking orders at your unit, checking the map, calling in a chopper and emailing the office -- all at precisely the same time. If that sounds beautiful to you, then you might consider picking up QPAD's new MK-85 mechanical gaming keyboard, which delivers full NKRO, USB and audio hub functionality and individual blood-red LED backlights over a single USB cable. It also has non-tactile, non-audible Cherry MX Red switches and, of course, plenty of programmable keys. The MK-85 will be available from December priced at €149 ($200). Alternatively, you can opt for a stripped-down MK-50 for €80 ($106), which plays the same core melody but without some of the trills.

In the market for a new fight stick? We know a guy -- well, okay, it's not so much a guy as a big, faceless corporation, but you get the point.
Come December 8, you can snag Hori's custom Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 rig for $149.99, Capcom-Unity has revealed. There will be three different versions: the one with the colored buttons above, another with white buttons and a super deluxe edition with built-in cup holder and FM radio.
Okay, fine, we made that last one up, but how awesome would that be? So awesome.

The UK Government has amazingly admitted that it made no attempt to gather its own evidence when formulating its anti-piracy plans that were included in the controversial Digital Economy Bill.
Instead, the decision to implement a “three strikes” rule and demand that ISPs play a role in internet censorship was based only on information supplied by copyright holder lobbyists.
Worse still, civil servants working on the proposed legislation were not granted access to data from said lobbyists.
“It is reasonable to acknowledge that the Open Rights Group have something of a point about the evidence used for the Digital Economy Act,” Adrian Brazier, who was formerly of the DEA team, told a hearing a hearing for the Parliamentary Select Committee for Business, Innovation and Skills, as reported by IPtegraity.com.
“It was somewhat opaque. The impact assessment was not based on new research or evidence. We had no independent source of information. It is probably fair to say that the evidence we had, had been offered by the rights-holders, they were unwilling to lift the bonnet and let us see the engines, if you like the workings and methodology.”
Confirming that the team were not privy to any of the methodology behind the stats, Brazier added: “We were trying to make the best brick we could with what straw we could find.
“In those circumstances, I would say however, that we were always clear as to the provenance of the sources we were quoting. We never claimed they were government figures. We were clear that these were figures that were provided by the rights-holders.
“We were as transparent as we could be in those circumstances, but we could not be transparent about the workings themselves.”

The Homebrew community needs a new games console for our developers to get their handson after the demise of homebrew on just about every console and the commercial failure of consoles such as Caanoo and Pandora (both good consoles but sadly will never go true mainstream despite the best of intentions).
Today the Gamegadget was announced :
GameGadget announced today the launch of their first “Go Anywhere - Play Everything” games console, The GameGadget 1.0. Built alongside a revolutionary software service (GameGadgetGames), GameGadget offers Gamers, Game Developers and Game Publishers, unrivalled choice and flexibility in how they play, create and sell games.
GameGadget will make its worldwide debut at the end of 2011. Jason Cooper, the creator of the GameGadget said:
“GameGadget has been designed with the ultimate goal of playing every game on a single device, just as the “iPod” was for music. Hundreds of thousands of games are currently “archived” and no longer being enjoyed by Gamers, with no value being generated for the Developers and Publishers. The launch of GameGadget creates a market for gamers to play the games they want to play. The GameGadgetGames service, just like “Apple’s App Store”, allows the owners of these games, to re-market their back catalogue, in their original format, set the appropriate pricing and gain incremental revenue, BUT with no additional investment”.
The GameGadget 1.0 will be available exclusively from www.gamegadget.net SRP £99.99. GameGadgetGames is scheduled to launch January 2012.
GameGadget for Gamers
GameGadget has been created to allow Gamers to purchase legal and secure downloads of their favourite games through an iTunes style application onto a single portable device.
GameGadget for Game Developers and Publishers
Through a simple and secure platform, programmers, publishers, developers, rights and license holders can monetize existing games instantly. GameGadget ensure the rights of the original owners of the content are protected. All games played on any GameGadget that are delivered via “GameGadgetGames” are encoded using a unique DRM (Digitial Rights Management) system.
Publishers can establish a brand new and unique digital revenue stream without any further investment by simply uploading games in their original format to GamesGadgetGames. Operating on a revenue share model, publishers are able to set and manage pricing in line with their commercial goals.
Anyone interested in licensing their games for download on GameGadgetGames should register their interest at www.gamegadget.net
Interested in a Career in video games? GameGadget is also an Open Source development Platform.
GameGadget provides all the tools to help users to create their own games - even if they have no experience in video game development! GameGadget hardware has also been developed to be freely programmable, to encourage individuals and small developers to create exciting new content, just as Sony Computer Entertainment did for the PlayStation One with Net Yaroze and with the Linux Platform for PlayStation 2,
GameGadget 1.0 uses a Linux based Operating System which has been highly optimized for handheld consoles. This allows programmers to develop content just like they would do for any other Linux based system.
Popular game development libraries such as SDL and DirectFB are fully compatible, creating a cross compiling environment. GameGadget provides all documentation, start-up guides for developers, lists of available libraries and specific platform notes.
Anyone interested in developing games for GameGadget should register their interest at www.gamegadget.net
Jason Cooper further commented:
“We have developed GameGadget to restore the video gaming experience to how it should be, for both gamers and developers. GameGadget is a unique gaming device, a bespoke software application and digital store. Our catalogue is ever expanding; allowing users fast and secure downloads all supported by an online community, giving gamers the total gaming experience.”

The European Union's digital agenda commissioner has said that money spent on pursuing those found guilty of breaching copyright has not helped to decrease piracy.
Aggressive legal tactics from certain rights holders has simply created an air of resentment and distrust for the whole copyright system, Neelie Kroes argues.
"Is the current copyright system the right and only tool to achieve our objectives? Not really," she argued. "We need to keep on fighting against piracy, but legal enforceability is becoming increasingly difficult; the millions of dollars invested trying to enforce copyright have not stemmed piracy.
"Citizens increasingly hear the word copyright and hate what is behind it. Sadly, many see the current system as a tool to punish and withhold, not a tool to recognise and reward.
"The life of an artist is tough: the crisis has made it tougher. Let's get back to basics, and deliver a system of recognition and reward that puts artists and creators at its heart."
Sadly, Kroes offers little in the way of alternative suggestions for a better alternative to copyright enforcement.

Nine new titles have entered the UK All Formats charts this week, although none have been able to shift Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as the best-seller in the region.
Sales of the first-person shooter dropped 87 per cent over its week one debut but it still claims the number one spot despite a strong opening week for Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Revelations at number two.
The latest in the Assassin's Creed franchise saw unit sales up 4 per cent on last year's game and revenues up 8 per cent, arriving on a Tuesday and selling 61 per cent of sales during its first 24 hours.
Sales of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim have fallen 62 per cent although it still takes the number three spot, ahead of THQ's Saint's Row The Third which saw sales up 43 per cent compared to the debut of Saints Row 2 in 2008.
With FIFA 12 at number five, the next new entry is Microsoft's Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary at six followed by Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword at seven.
Battlefield 3 sits at number eight with sales down 40 per cent and then the last new entry in the top ten is Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS at nine, with Just Dance 3 at ten.
New releases that didn't break the top 10 include Need for Speed: The Run at 11, Warner's LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 at 13, Sega's Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games at 20 and Kinect Disneyland Adventures at 39.

'I can't speak to the motivations of the company, as they are not a pure research firm'
Reggie Fils-Aime, the Nintendo of America company president, has cast doubts over the impartiality of a recent study that claimed mobiles are dominating handhelds.
Research published by Flurry concluded that iOS and Android control a 58 per cent majority of the portable gaming market. It reached the claim by comparing iOS and Android-based game revenues with two aging handheld systems – the PSP and Nintendo DS.
Fils-Aime said Nintendo looks at data from a range of analysts – specifically ones which it trusts and “have a methodology that makes sense” – and explained that the Flurry study hasn’t been considered.
“Flurry is a company that consults app developers,” he told AOL.
“I can't speak to the motivations of the company, as they are not a pure research firm,” he added.

The Call of Duty franchise might have made more money than the likes of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings at the box office, but it still has a long way to go before it overtakes them as a brand. That's the verdict of one of the UK's leading brand experts, who said most people struggle to tell military shooters apart.Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 last week enjoyed the biggest entertainment launch of all time.Backed by an unprecedented advertising campaign it generated an incredible $750 million in sales in just five days. After 24 hours on sale it had sold 6.5 million copies in the US and UK alone.Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and in the UK, the money made by Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops in their opening weeks was greater than the combined opening weekends of all eight Harry Potter films. But according to Stephen Cheliotis, chief executive of The Centre for Brand Analysis and chairman of the UK Superbrands and CoolBrands Councils, Call of Duty cannot compete with the biggest brands in film because most people think games in the same genre all look the same."If you look at awareness they're not quite up there with the likes of Star Wars or Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings," he told Eurogamer. "Outside of the real keen gamers there's a bit of confusion between different types of game franchises."For those that are part-time gamers or loosely interested but not necessarily real keen players, they mould a little bit into one. With the latest release, they say, is that part of that franchise or is it that one? I can't really remember."There aren't many people who struggle to tell the difference between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter and Twilight. They're all clearly defined, different propositions. They might be in the same genre, fantasy adventure, but they're clearly distinguished and differentiated."With games, unless you're a real follower, you say, I can't remember really. It's just one of those big franchises and it's a military shooter, and they're all kind of the same. I don't think people say, Call of Duty is this, and this other one is that. That's the difference. They blur. That's where you've got a brand issue. There's not much to distinguish them for the average player that's just jumping in and out."Cheliotis said if he were commissioned by Activision to analyse the Call of Duty brand, he would work on cultivating the personality of the series and focus on one or two areas of the brand proposition."Maybe one series is continuously about MI5, or one's consistently about the Royal Navy. Something that says, this is what it is. You can't go, well, I'll be the US today and I'll be Russia tomorrow. Is there a thread that holds that series together that says, this is who we are? Whether that's a person, a unit, a country or a fight, maybe set in different times or scenarios, you're always the same side having the same fight. That could be the glue."I still think [games] all blur into one. For your casual gamer walking into Tesco, and just buying their game alongside their milk and veg, there's a bit of, oh, I don't know if that's for me."Stephen Cheliotis, CEO, The Centre for Brand Analysis
"How do people say, that's clearly that game? If you've got a still of one of those films, straight away you say, that's that. If you have a still from Call of Duty versus another military franchise, unless you are a real discerning follower, you'll probably say, oh, I don't know. It could be Call of Duty or Battlefield."Call of Duty is, by a huge margin, the most successful franchise the industry has to offer. It is the fastest-selling, best-selling and highest grossing video game. But there is still plenty of room for growth, Cheliotis said, if Activision works on the brand and expands its social aspects. However, he warned Activision against trying to make Call of Duty a catch-em-all brand, appealing to all types of people. This, he said, could have a negative impact."There is a danger that it becomes so generic it's a bit of everything for everyone," Cheliotis said. "When you're doing brand analysis, it's good that some people don't like you. It means you have a point. It creates longevity and doesn't mean you're a jack of all trades. If you've got something that's so generic and bland and dull that everyone might like it, then you're in the longer term in danger of being so catch-em-all that you're not creating long-term followers."They might be better off focusing on what they're really good at and hone that down and be known for that."The game industry faces a difficult job improving its brand awareness, Cheliotis said. Only Nintendo with Mario and Sega with Sonic have achieved anything approaching success in this regard."It's a real struggle with games. You've got Sonic. You've got Mario. You haven't got a lot of other brands that are truly distinctive and stand out. You might have a few point in time ones, but generally, as long term brands that have longevity and true differentiation, there are not many examples."When you think that the industry is bigger than music and film, it's quite surprising."They're clearly massive successes, and they've got decent awareness and familiarity. They do cut through more than they used to in terms of across the board different demographics, but I still think they all blur into one. For your casual gamer walking into Tesco, and just buying their game alongside their milk and veg, there's a bit of, oh, I don't know if that's for me."

It is repellent.
A Reddit user discovered a document [PDF] hosted by the Global Intellectual IP Center ("Global"), from before the introduction of SOPA, urging Congress to enact such a measure. Among those corporate sponsors is Nintendo, who is demonstrably and justifiably upset about piracy, and committed to taking all the wrongsteps to stop it.
Other companies signing off in favor of this anti-"rogue site" legislation, in the interest of protecting their IP online include Sony -- Sony Electronics, Sony Music, and Sony Pictures, separately. EA is also listed, along with Rite Aid (what?) and Zippo (what?)
Okay, so you already know how we feel about this thing. If you feel the same way, you can write or call Congress. November 16 saw concerted "Stop Censorship" efforts (Tumblr black-barred everyone's dashboard in protest, for example), but you can, of course, still contact your representatives. If you're outside of the US, uh, cross your fingers and hope you don't lose all the US-based visitors to your sites.

Time to face the facts -- your tiny apartment just doesn't have room for a fancy wheel and pedal setup, but clunky gamepads aren't getting you any closer to the winners circle. What's a racing fanatic to do? SteelSeries has an idea: keep the wheel, kill the pedals. Boasting enough buttons to make an authentic F1 steering wheel blush, the SteelSeries Simraceway SRW-S1 steering wheel swaps the traditional foot petal peripheral for a quartet of finger ready paddles saddled on the controller's rear. A motion sensor gives the wheel a tinge of Mario Kart flair, and eliminates the bulky, mountable steering column. The SRW-S1 will set you back $120, and score you just enough room for that La-Z-Boy you always wanted. Check out the wheel's official press release and a demo video after the break.

It may not top the record-breaking performance of the UK games market last week, but Today is set to be one of the busiest days of the year for games retailers.
Eight top-tier games will all be released tomorrow drawing in fans from across a range of genres.
The headline act is the long-awaited Nintendo pair of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii and DS outing Super Mario 3D Land.
How the Wii title will perform in today’s market is hard to predict, but expect big things from Mario – and a healthy boost to 3DS hardware sales.
Also on the way Today are EA’s Need for Speed: The Run, Warner’s LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 and THQ’s Saints Row: The Third.
That’s not it, either. Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games is also arriving, as are Microsoft’s Disneyland Adventures and Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.
And don’t forget that on Tuesday of this week we had two other triple-A blockbusters arrive at retail – Ubiosoft’sAssassin’s Creed: Revelations and Microsoft’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.
Here’s within UK retail a good night’s sleep. Today’s going to be busy.

Online auction giant eBay is to open its first bricks and mortar store in the UK.
The one-off five-day experiment will be located just off London’s Oxford Street and will trade between December 1st-5th.
Interestingly, the shop itself will have a very limited selection of stock and no tills. Instead, upon inspecting the goods on offer customers will be encouraged to scan a QR code that will log onto eBay using their smartphones and bid for goods.
PCs will also be available in-store for those wishing to check out the eBay website.

Call of Duty triggered its customary retail surge, but the games that dared go up against it were also victorious.
Last week was the UK games market’s biggest week ever in terms of revenues, bringing in £120.8m. More than 3m games were sold. While Modern Warfare 3 accounted for most, GfK Chart-Track also heaped praise on Bethesda’s Skyrim.
“For the first time we had Call of Duty with another big new release,” games director Dorian Bloch told MCV. “They both helped achieve the record-breaking market figure of £121m.”
Bethesda’s European PR and marketing director Sarah Seaby added: “We’re delighted with Skyrim’s success. In the same week as the incredible launch of Call of Duty, we saw a huge amount of people queuing for the midnight opening.”
One unsung hero was Mind Candy’s DS title Moshlings Zoo, the first Moshi Monsters boxed game. It sold over 30,000 copies in its first weekend, took No.1 in the DS chart and No.7 in the All Formats Top 40.
“It’s fantastic to be seen in the same light as some amazing mainstream titles,” said senior brand marketing manager Andrew Matjaszek.
And this sales surge isn’t about to stop. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Halo Anniversary were released earlier this week, while today (Friday, November 18th) sees the arrival of Saints Row, Need For Speed, Zelda, Mario, LEGO Harry Potter and Mario & Sonic.
“Of course, it remains to be seen whether the current crop of triple-A titles will turn the market round the corner,” Bloch said. “What I can say for sure is Q4 2011 is the most concentrated Q4 that we’ve ever seen.
“The last thirteen weeks of 2011 will probably account for 50 per cent of the entire year in terms of games software by revenue, which has never happened before.”

November 18th, 2011, 11:37 Posted By: wraggster
The Arvon Foundation has launched a dedicated games writing course, featuring the likes of Heavenly Sword writer Rhianna Pratchett.
The five-day, residential course will be tutored by Naomi Alderman and David Varela, both of whom have worked on Mind Candy's ARG Perplex City, with Alderman also writing for The Guardian.
"Gaming is now the largest entertainment industry in the world - it covers everything from FarmVille to Call Of Duty, from Wii games to alternate reality adventures," Alderman said. "Increasingly, gamelike ways of telling stories are bleeding through to older forms too - theatre, TV and even novels are becoming more interactive.
"So it's a perfect moment for any writer to start to learn what's going on in the world of games, and how to use those skills and techniques."
Pratchett added: "Game writing is the latest cresting wave of the narrative world and this course will ensure you have the knowledge to ride it."
The first course starts on January 30 at The Ted Hughes Arvon Centre in West Yorkshire, with prices starting at £575. For more, follow the source link below.
