Electronic Arts is a mainstay in the game industry. From early days on the PC, pre-game consoles, to its current role as one of the world's largest game companies, the EA name's been synonymous with gaming. To stay in such a position, the publisher's had to adapt to changing trends in gaming, as games moved from home PCs to game consoles, and now to the internet. The next console generation is no exception, with EA promising two of its largest franchises -- Battlefield and FIFA -- for the launch of bothXbox One and PlayStation 4 this holiday. And that's to say nothing of EA's investment in a nascent game studio composed of the people responsible for the Call of Dutyfranchise, Respawn Entertainment -- a pretty major coup considering that those folks previously worked at EA's main competitor, Activision.
It's with all this in mind that we sat down to speak with EA Chief Operations Officer Peter Moore at Gamescom 2013, not long after Moore held press attention captive inan hour-long presentation. He said his company's current dedication to online functionality in its games is unmatched: "We don't ship a game at EA that is offline," he told us, an echo of his competition's claims about the next generation of game consoles. Head below the break for a lengthy discussion with Moore on all things gaming in 2013.

Execs say FIFA 14 Xbox One giveaway wrongly perceived as a strategic tilt toward Microsoft
[h=3]Electronic Arts[/h]ea.com
A rash of recent exclusivity deals and cross-promotions between Microsoft and Electronic Arts is not indication that the publisher is throwing its weight behind the Xbox One maker, according to multiple reports out of Gamescom this week. Speaking with CVG, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau stressed the publisher remains platform agnostic.
"One of the things that struck me this week is how a tactical deal with one of our platform partners has been blown out and perceived as strategic tilt - that's a messaging error on our part. There is no strategic tilt," Gibeau said.
He added that Sony is executing well on its PlayStation 4 promotion to date, praising the company for its indie outreach, as well as being "clear and disciplined and consistent with their policies." And while there may not be much right now in the way of EA-Sony cross-promotions, Gibeau noted "it's a long cycle," and said both the PS4 and Xbox One are important to EA.
While Gibeau didn't extend that importance to the Wii U, EA Sports executive VP Andrew Wilson discussed the publisher's relationship with Nintendo in a separate interview with IGN.
"We're not building for Nintendo right now, but we have a tremendous relationship with them and have had a long relationship with them, and should it make sense for us to do so in the future we'll absolutely roll that into the plan," Wilson said.
Wilson also addressed the perception that EA has been leaning Microsoft's way, and like Gibeau, stressed the company's neutrality in the console wars.
"You know I think we'll have a great relationship with Microsoft for the foreseeable future," Wilson said. "But I also don't think that means we won't have a great relationship with Sony. I mean at the end of the day we're a platform agnostic company. We have great relationships with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. There's different things we do with different partners on different titles and different franchises."
This week, EA announced that it would be giving away a copy of FIFA 14 with every Xbox One sold at launch. Beyond that, the FIFA Ultimate Team Legends mode will be exclusive to Microsoft's consoles this year, Xbox One will receive timed exclusivity on Battlefield 4 DLC, and Respawn's much-anticipated Titanfall will be coming to PC and Xbox One, but not PS4.

About 600 students will enter Lynn University's freshman class this year, the largest since 2007, and they will all be using iPad Minis instead of textbooks. The iPads will cost $475, saving students up to 50% of what a semester's worth of textbooks would cost, estimates Lynn. Students will be able to access core curriculum classes on their iPads that are 'enhanced with custom multimedia content,' and will come with 'at least 30 education, productivity, social and news-related iOS apps — some free and some paid for by the university.' This seems to be the beginning of a new era for American colleges. The Boca Raton university is not the first to give iPads to students instead of textbooks. Back in 201,0 New Jersey-based Seton Hill University announced it would give students the tablets rather than books.

"Star Trek veterans such as Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov), Tim Russ (Tuvok), Robert Picardo (the Doctor) and others are busy in pre-production of a professionally produced pilot episode for a suggested new online Star Trek series named Star Trek: Renegades, which will be faithful to the original Star Trek canon. The events of the series are placed a decade after Voyager's return from Delta Quadrant. When the pilot is complete, they'll present it to CBS in the hopes that it'll be picked up. They have also opened an Indiegogo campaign, seeking more funds from Star Trek fans to help make the production even more professional. They've already reached their primary funding goal."

The acquisition king answers for 87.2 per cent of the 225 million internet users.
Yahoo's leadership of the internet traffic charts comes as a surprise to some, however, what with all the acquisitions over the last year, it is no surprise that the search engine has come back into the limelight.
The number of startups - mobile or otherwise - taken on by Yahoo is astonishing. Recently, social web browsing company Rockmelt was embraced, before that mobile ad group Admotive slipped into its clutches - and mobile management startup Xobni was drafted in prior to that.
If this hasn't affected the amount of web traffic Yahoo received then God only knows what did.
Also in the line up for most traffic was blogging site Tumblr - placed at 30th - who became a part of the Yahoo umbrella back in May this yearfor a whopping $1.1 billion.
Considering the two companies are under the same roof, if you add the 38,367 million visits to Tumblr onto the 196 million to Yahoo, compared to Google who received just over 192 million, then busybody Yahoo's spending spree has certainly paid off.

To some, Google Glass is nothing more than a notification machine, but there are others who see Glass as an AR headset waiting to happen. OpenGlass is among those looking to give Glass augmented reality powers, and it's figured out how to implement simple AR in real-time. The trick was accomplished by sampling the imagery pulled in by the headset's camera and extracting the portion of that feed that corresponds to the size of Glass's display. That feed is then sent to an OpenGlass server that overlays digital annotations provided by another users onto the video feed to augment the wearer's reality.
There's a video after the break demoing the AR functionality, but it's rudimentary and laggy in its implementation. Essentially, the system serves as a telestrator that superimposes scribbles into your field of view. It's a good proof-of-concept to show that Glass can do real-time AR, but there's a lot of work to be done before Glass can become a fully-fledged augmented (or mediated) reality headset.

3DS games now account for 9 of the top 10 best-sellers
Disney Magic Castle held the top spot in Japan almost by default last week, with no new releases to challenge its dominance.
This is the third week that Namco Bandai's 3DS title has charted at number one, though it has had precious little competition in that time. Last week's chart also reinforced the dominance of the 3DS in the Japanese market: 9 of the top 10 games were on Nintendo's handheld, the exception being Pikmin 3 on Wii U.
It was also a good week for 3DS hardware, with both models making significant gains over the previous week's sales totals.
The software top 10 is below, with lifetime sales in parentheses:
- 1. [3DS] Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life (Namco Bandai, 08/01/13) - 41,679 (206,627)
- 2. [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Nintendo, 07/18/13) - 39,809 (244,638)
- 3. [3DS] Tomodachi Collection: New Life (Nintendo, 04/18/13) - 28,361 (1,379,177)
- 4. [3DS] One Piece: Romance Dawn (Namco Bandai, 08/08/13) - 15,711 (40,498)
- 5. [3DS] Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (Capcom, 07/25/13) - 13,447 (322,764)
- 6. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) - 13,222 (3,377,938)
- 7. [3DS] Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Nintendo, 03/20/13) - 12,501 (870,745)
- 8. [3DS] Yokai Watch (Level-5, 07/11/13) - 11,133 (136,711)
- 9. [Wii U] Pikmin 3 (Nintendo, 07/11/13) - 10,956 (165,660)
- 10. [3DS] Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (Nintendo, 06/13/13) - 10,322 (253,454)
The hardware chart is below, with previous week's sales in parentheses:
- 1. 3DS XL - 47,005 (38,822)
- 2. 3DS - 23,992 (18,949)
- 3. PlayStation Vita - 19,363 (17,639)
- 4. PlayStation 3 - 14,331 (12,228)
- 5. Wii U - 12,047 (9,950)
- 6. PSP - 7,616 (6,303)
- 7. Wii - 1,772 (1,373)

Retailer will have "significant increase" in launch quantities over last gen, PS4 "first-to-know" list twice as long as Xbox One
[h=3]GameStop[/h]gamestop.com
This holiday season will see "the largest console launch in history," GameStop CEO Paul Raines proclaimed on the company's post-earnings investor call today. While Raines didn't say whether the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 would be claiming that title, the company is clearly expecting big things from both machines.
Speaking on the call, GameStop president Tony Bartel said the retailer's launch allocations from both Sony and Microsoft are "much stronger" than they were for the release of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Bartel said the company expects a significant increase in launch-day quantities of both machines compared to the previous generation. While he wouldn't give specific numbers, he did say GameStop has increased its supply chain capacity for the launch by 60 percent using contracted distribution centers.
Bartel also declined to mention which system had more preorders, but he did reveal other GameStop numbers gauging consumer interest in the new consoles. GameStop has "first-to-know" lists for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, allowing customers to receive updates on preorders, game announcements, and other deals related to each system. Among the company's PowerUp Rewards program members, Sony's system appears to be drawing the lion's share of interest. GameStop currently has 1.5 million members on the PlayStation 4 first-to-know list, with 700,000 on the Xbox One list. The PowerUp Rewards program boasts more than 25 million members in the US, and GameStop refers to them as the heaviest spenders in the category.

Chris Morris talks to devs about F2P and how it may actually be better suited to consoles than the PC
Consoles, traditionally, have been centered around the traditional retail model. Pay for a game. Take it home. Enjoy. (And, lately, pay again for DLC.)
But the rise of mobile has made free-to-play titles one of the fastest growing segments of the industry. And Microsoft and Sony are attempting to position their current and next generation systems to capitalize on this growing segment.
So far, for Microsoft at least, there has been a definite learning curve.
Wargaming.net, which is currently in the midst of a public beta for its World of Tanks on Xbox Live, made waves last month when its outspoken CEO Victor Kislyi called the quality assurance and certification processes for the Xbox 360 "totally unacceptable".
"Since these are dedicated gaming systems, you're more predisposed to try something, whereas when you're on the PC, you might get distracted by, say, Facebook or something"
SOE's John Smedley
Some news sites ran with that sound byte to imply Wargaming was fed up with the console manufacturer. However, Kislyi was making a larger point - and the team that's working directly on World of Tanks for Xbox 360 says that while there have certainly been hiccups, Microsoft has been working hard to accommodate the free-to-play gaming giant.
"I'd be lying if I said this is clear and precise," says Denny Thorley, head of Wargaming's Chicago-based studio and former president of Day 1 Studios. "What we're trying to do is something Microsoft hasn't attempted to do before, but they've been terrific partners in trying to be flexible where they can."
For instance, he notes, incremental changes to the game are now being certified faster than they have previously - as testers are already familiar with the game.
While Microsoft is working through some issues, Sony has a bit more history in the space. Its Sony Online Entertainment unit has been the internal torchbearer for free-to-play games - and it has seen notable success.
"The single fastest growing segment of our business is DC Universe Online on the PS3," says John Smedley, president of SOE. "70 percent of our revenue [on that game] comes from the PS3 and 70 percent of our players come from the PS3."
Because the company has been offering deep free-to-play experiences longer, it also has worked out a system to more quickly approve updates - something that could aid it in the next generation.
"One of the advantages we have had is we were the first with Free Realms," says Smedley. "With that, we've helped the QA group set up the system. What happened is there's a trust level that builds up. They do certain checks every time - but over time, if you don't screw up, they start to trust your [internal] QA."
Consoles, he says, actually have some notable advantages over the PC when it comes to free-to-play. There's consistently stable hardware and software and the installed base is constantly growing. Most importantly, though, the barrier to microtranscation purchases is lower.
"There's a higher likelihood of having a payment system on file," he says. "And since these are dedicated gaming systems, you're more predisposed to try something, whereas when you're on the PC, you might get distracted by, say, Facebook or something."
When it comes to monetization of free-to-play titles, Microsoft and Sony approach things differently. While both take a cut of microtransaction sales, Microsoft gets two bites at the pie, since players hoping to play World of Tanks for more than a one-week trial must be Xbox Live Gold members.
(Wargaming, Thorley notes, will not begin monetizing the game until it is out of its beta period - something that will happen "real soon now".)
"They're looking at what we're doing on the [Xbox] 360 to understand all the issues and I'm convinced it will get easier and easier on the next platform"
Wargaming's Denny Thorley
While the console audience is certainly vast, not all free-to-play game makers are interested in pursuing that audience. Kabam, for instance, says there are no plans to work on a console version of any of its games at this point.
"Sure, there are games you absolutely want to play on the console, but there are plenty that people want to play with convenience [in mind]," says Chris Carvalho, Chief Operating Officer of Kabam. "They want to play in the living room or the kitchen or wherever. ... There's a huge growth factor in the table market - and consumers are saying loudly that they want the convenience."
The factor that's driving that decision is less about the longer certification process - and more about growth forecasts of platforms. Juniper Research estimates there will be 64.1 billion games downloaded to tablets and smartphones in 2017, which is more than triple the 21 billion downloaded last year.
Those are impressive numbers, to be sure. But it's certainly too early to count out consoles. Both Microsoft and Sony have shown in their pre-launch maneuvering that they plan an all out war against each other - and other platforms - to retain their strength in the gaming world.
"They are a very sharp group of people and are clearly paying attention to the questions we ask - which usually begin 'why can't we?'," says Thorley. "They're looking at what we're doing on the [Xbox] 360 to understand all the issues and I'm convinced it will get easier and easier on the next platform."

Palmer Luckey's team are building a brave new world - but it's up to you to fill it
You don't usually find a queue at GDC Europe unless it's for the buffet, but Oculus VR's Rift headset had developers and executives queuing alongside its booth just to strap it on. Tucked away in a small office just metres away were Palmer Luckey, the intimidatingly young founder of the company, Nate Mitchell, the VP of product who was previously senior product developer at Gaikai, and COO Laird Malamed, an industry veteran with Activision, Sony, LucasFilm and a professorship on his CV.
The trio were at GDCE to talk to developers, share their latest HD headset prototype and launch a new sharing platform but ended up talking to GamesIndustry International about their new work colleagues, why they'd welcome competition (or a phone call) from Sony or Microsoft and jetlag.
Q: What's the latest update on the company?
Nate Mitchell: A lot of good things going on. We're working on the Oculus Rift, the consumer version. Other than that things are going really well, we continue to update the SDK, we've shipped over 20,000 development kits so far, 7,500 were ordered during Kickstarter, everything else was post. And those are shipped, not just ordered. We have over 25,000 people signed up for the developer centre, downloading, using the SDK which is super exciting. Integrations with Unreal Engine 4 now, Unreal Engine 3, Unity 3, Unity 4, all out of the box, so a lot of exciting stuff happening. Someone tried to count the number of Oculus Rift demos that were out there and there were like over 200 different demos that you could download and play.
"I would say that all the coolest demos we've seen in VR have been from indie developers, not established ones"
Palmer Luckey
And we're in the midst of a VR jam. We have over 300 teams signed up and we estimate it's between 900 and a thousand people participating, which is pretty awesome. We had milestone two on Friday where they had to submit gameplay videos, and we knew there was a question of 'so a thousand people signed up, how many people will actually finish?' and for milestone two we had 250 teams complete milestone two with video.

[gbg] put together a neat little project to get people familiarized with Bitcoins. A lot of techies know what Bitcoins are, but the impetus to download the Bitcoin client and start mining is a bit too much for some. [gbg] has a solution for this – a Bitcoin vending machine. Just dump your pocket change in the coin slot, and out comes a QR code that allows you to add Bitcoins to your wallet.
Inside this Bitcoin briefcase is a Raspberry Pi that connects to a local WiFi connection. Every five seconds, the Raspi looks at the current conversion rate of USD to Bitcoins. Once coins are deposited into the briefcase, a receipt complete with a scannable QR code is printed on a small thermal printer.
When [gbg] took this to the latest DEFCON, a lot of people were interested in the project and started shoveling change into the machine. So many people were interested that [gbg] and his compatriots are planning on turning this into a proper open-source device, complete with a bill reader and possibly an ASIC miner so the Pi can sell the coins it produces.

Publisher EA has said it wants to mimic the successful reinvention of the Batman video games franchise with its fresh take on the Star Wars universe.
"The most important thing for me is that we take the Star Wars license and come up with games where peoples' jaws drop," EA's games label Patrick Soderlund toldPolygon. "We need to do with this what [Batman: Arkham Asylum] did for the Batman license.
"It's going to take awhile. We just announced the license and showed a sneak peek of Hoth. The speeder and the AT-AT will be in [the game] for sure."
It was revealed in May that EA had grabbed the rights to produce Star Wars games for the brand’s new owner Disney.
Patrick Soderlund later admitted that EA-owned Battlefield developer DICE had “begged for the chance" to make a Star Wars Battlefront game.

As Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PS4 both near release, PCR is taking a look at the latest news and details about both.
The Release Date
Sony announced at this week’s Gamescom that the PS4 would be launching in the UK on November 29th. Meanwhile, Microsoft has stayed vague about the Xbox One, with the console known to be launching the same month as the PS4 – November – but with no exact date yet.
The Price
Both Sony and Microsoft announced prices at this year’s E3 convention. Sony’s PS4 comes in the cheaper at £349, but doesn’t include Sony’s Kinect-like camera and motion-controlling device - the Playstation Eye. You might struggle to find a PS4 on day one though, as Sony reported this week that the Playstation 3’s successor was outselling both PS2 and PS3 preorders. Meanwhile, the Xbox One sits at £429, but includes the Kinect - despite the device no longer being necessary to operate the Xbox One. For those who preorder the Xbox One, Microsoft is also offering a free copy of FIFA 14.
The Specs
In terms of weight, the first thing you'll notice when you "pick up" either console, the Xbox One is the slightly heftier black box of the two, weighing in at a solid 3.1kg over the PS4’s almost-as-solid 2.8kg.
Despite almost similar weights, however, the Xbox One is much larger dimension-wise than the PS4, coming in at 10 per cent bigger than the Xbox 360. Both have a more straight-edged design than their respective curvy predecessors; the PS4 adopting a ‘laid-back’ rhombus position compared to the Xbox One’s attentive 90-degree corners.
Inside the boxes, both the PS4 and Xbox One have very similar AMD 8-core Jaguar x86-architecture CPUs, although the PS4’s 2GHz processor is clocked slightly above the Xbox One’s 1.6GHz offering.
The Graphics
Graphics capability - a popular detail to butt horns over for Xbox 360 and PS3 fans – for both the PS4 and Xbox One at first appears to be almost equal. Both use GPUs comparable to Radeon HD 7000-series offerings, but the PS4’s GPU actually clocks in at 50 per cent quicker, despite Microsoft’s efforts to speed up the Xbox One’s graphics processing following the initial announcement of the consoles.
To assist the GPUs in making games more beautiful than ever, both consoles are equipped with a serious amount of RAM – 8GB each, with the Xbox One also holding 32MB of eSRAM in reserve to buff up the framerates of games. Again, initial similarities are dissolved by closer inspection, as the PS4’s RAM is high-bandwidth GDDR5, while the Xbox One’s is the more common DDR3.
What is common between both is that either is roughly ten times more powerful than the last generation consoles, with the chief technology officer at EA, Rajat Teneja saying that both the PS4 and Xbox One are a generation ahead of high-spec gaming PCs, despite what PC manufacturers say. Both also come equipped with bluray drives, and following Microsoft’s changing of DRM policies, have similar approaches to online requirements, which includes the requirement of Sony’s monthly subscription ‘Playstation Plus’ to play online on the PS4, which was free on the PS3.
The Games
What we’re all here to play. The PS4 has exclusive offerings of Victorian-era steampunk shooterThe Order: 1886, free online racing game Drive Club and sequels inFamous: Second Son andKillzone: Shadowfall.
The Xbox One, on the other hand, is the only place to find multiplayer mech-battler Titanfall, the mysterious next game from the Alan Wake and Max Payne creators titled Quantum Break, as well as popular racing series followup Forza 5 and, naturally, the next Halo game; Halo 5.
The Verdict
The true winner (if there is one) of the next-gen console race might be revealed in November, or it might take a year or two to truly recognise if the games and services offered by Sony or Microsoft are bettering their rival. Regardless, for gamers on either side November is going to be a very exciting time.

'We see games with multi-millions of unit sales going on for a very long time'
Consoles still generate the majority of the money in the game industry despite the rise of other platforms, says Phil Harrison.
Speaking to CVG, the Microsoft exec said there was still a substantial economy around the console business, and one that involved various stakeholders such as publishers, developers, retailers and manufacturers.
He also said that Xbox 360 “continues to make a profit”, and said the hardware itself was important because of the money consumers were spending on Xbox Live and games for its console throughout the year.
He declined to offer specifics however on whether the Xbox 360 business had made a lifetime profit.
“Well the Xbox 360 continues to make a profit, and we hope a substantial contribution not just to Microsoft but to the industry as a whole,” said Harrison.

Google Glass - Google's tech glasses that can take pictures and record videos - could be launching in Best Buy stores next year in the US.
Google Glass user Robert Scoble heard the rumour, as reported by Digital Trends. Scoble claims Google will rent 6,000 square feet inside every Best Buy store next year to sell Google Glass.
"This makes sense, since you really need to try Glass before buying it to see if it's for you, and you also need to have it fitted to your face," he said.
"And, if you are like me and need prescription lenses you'll need all that taken care of too before you can order yours."
Google has previously stated it is planning to launch Glass in 2014. Whether the product will launch exclusively with Best Buy or not, however, remains to be seen.
Best Buy already sells Google Chromecast and Google Nexus 7 tablets in its US stores.
Best Buy UK ceased trading in early 2012 due to poor sales performances. Best Buy in the US has just reported a profit of $266 million (£170 million) during Q2 2013.
