Samsung and Oculus, the firm behind the Rift virtual reality headset, are working together on a new headset, rumours have claimed.
Engadget, citing “sources close to both companies”, reports that the deal will benefit both companies – Oculus will provide Samsung with early access to its mobile software development kit and will help develop the user interface for the headset, while Samsung will provide Oculus with early access to its upcoming high-resolution OLED screens, which the latter firm plans to integrate into its future headset models.
The screens, which provide a resolution higher than that of Full HD 1080p, will also be used in Samsung’s future smartphone models, the sources added.
The sources also teased some details of Samsung’s rumoured VR headset.
The headset is said to require a connection to a smartphone, which doubles as the display for the device.
The device also includes multiple sensors, including an accelerometer, with the processing power for motion tracking provided by the connected smartphone.
The headset is said to support use with a game controller, or can be controlled instead using motion tacking and voice recognition. Physical control buttons are included on the outside of the device.
The sources added that the headset’s rear-facing camera supports for video pass-through, meaning that the user can choose to “see through the phone using the rear camera, which shows a video feed of the outside world to your eyes".
Unlike the Oculus Rift, Samsung’s VR headset is said to be focused on media experiences rather than gaming, but some games are reportedly in development for the platform.
As well as its new-found partner Oculus, Samsung also joins Sony in the virtual reality marketplace, with Sony’s Project Morpheus VR headset announced earlier this year.

Last week we told you about Samsung's unannounced virtual reality headset: a peripheral that enables VR interaction for flagship phones from the world's largest phone manufacturer. This week we've got far more details. First things first, Samsung's headset is the fruit of a collaboration with Oculus VR, the Facebook-owned virtual reality startup that both literally and figuratively kickstarted the current wave of VR products.
Oculus is handling the software side of the product, while Samsung handles the hardware. The deal is a swap: Oculus gives Samsung early access to its mobile software development kit and helps develop user interface software, while Samsung gives Oculus early access to its next-gen OLED screens. And yes, Oculus is still making its own, gaming-focused, PC-based virtual reality headset; that's why it needs next-gen, high-pixel-density OLED screens from Samsung. Join us below for new details about the device itself, as well as more on the unlikely partnership between two tech giants.

Apple's reportedly working on one, Google's developing an entire ecosystem and hundreds of smaller companies either have products already on the market, or currently under development. The question isn't who's building a smartwatch, it's who isn't building one. And as expected, you can count Microsoft out of that latter camp. The software giant turned computer manufacturer is working on its own wearable concoction (not pictured above), according to a Forbes report, withKinect engineers even pitching in with the project.
The unannounced device will reportedly collect health data day and night, such as your heart rate, and will work with Android, iOS and Windows Phones alike. It's also said to sport a design similar to Samsung's Gear Fit, a color touchscreenfacing a wearer's wrist and a two-day battery. Opening the device up to multiple platforms would be a key selling point, and continuous monitoring could make the Microsoft wearable a fit for casual users and fitness buffs alike.

3D virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift are often lauded as the next big thing in entertainment, but they're also helping to change the way we learn. To mark the anniversary of the Allied invasion of Western Europe on June 6, 1944, French 3D specialists Dassault Systèmes have painstakingly rebuilt D-Day relics in high-definiton VR using the original blueprints of vehicles and devices used in the assault on Normandy 70 years ago. In contrast to million-dollar gaming franchises like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty, which give players a first-person perspective of the fighting, Dassault Systèmes wanted to recognize the engineering prowess and technological advancements that helped soldiers to liberate France. To do so, a team of 30 specialists recreated the Allied forces' Higgins' landing craft, Waco gliders and Mulberry Harbor, the first (floating) deepwater port of its kind. The resulting animations are perfect for viewing on virtual reality headsets like the Oculus, digitally preserving innovations that have since been lost to the sea.

A new patent application by Samsung reveals that firm’s plans for a smartwatch that lets users perform tasks by waving their hands in front of the device’s built-in camera.
The recently published patent demonstrates how the built-in camera could recognise movements and the position of the wearer’s fingers to trigger specific commands.
The patent suggests that flicking a finger could push content from the smartwatch to a smart TV.
Other gestures include making a fist, pinching and crossing one arm over another.
Another part of the patent looked at a rotating ring around the edge of the smartwatch’s circular display, which could be used for scrolling through web pages or settings options.
The clock face will also feature a touchscreen, and the device will include Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity.
A recent report on wearable technology revealed that global smartwatch shipments grew by 250 per cent in Q1 2014, with Samsung’s Galaxy Gear making up 70 per cent of the market.
Last month a patent filling for Samsung's Google Glass rival ‘Galaxy Glass’ was discovered.
The patent shows a headset with a single display in front of the wearer’s right eye.

An article at Wired takes a look at two multiplayer survival games, DayZ and Rust, and at the behavior of players when their actions are freed from a civilized moral code. 'Violence wouldn't bother a psychopath, [Dr. Adam Perkins] says, but they might have another incentive to avoid violence: the consequences of getting caught. Most psychopaths are logical people, he says, and understand that actions bring consequences. The threat of repercussions — say, for example, prison — might keep them from acting out. Such disincentives do not exist in virtual worlds. Absent a sense of empathy, you're free to rob and kill at will.

Digital may be the industry’s biggest market, but consumers still prefer to buy games in a box.
Analysts Kantar WorldPanel revealed that two-thirds (72 per cent) of consumers are buying boxed products only. It follows estimates from Screen Digest, which showed that digital games last year generated more revenue than physical ones.
Just ten per cent of UK gamers have made the switch from physical to exclusively buying digital games. That’s compared to 18 per cent of gamers who are buying both.
Consumers still enjoy physical products due to the high cost of digital games and the ability to trade-in boxed games at stores.
Kantar also revealed that the console gaming population of adults in the UK is six times larger than that of kids. Yet, 76 per cent of children aged seven to 14 play console games – well ahead of the 55 per cent of UK adults playing consoles.

Pot and video games have long been bound together in hazy, wedded bliss—as well as in compulsion and codependency. Many a World of Warcraft binger has been found in the darkest hours of the night with clouds of sweet, milk-white smoke curling around him, a bong next to the keyboard. But the way these lovers, games and weed, commingle has only rarely been studied, and when done so, usually exclusively in the context of substance abuse and how it relates to what is known as PVP: 'problem video game playing.'"

The zeitgeist for wearable technology is to cool down within the next two years, an analyst has predicted.
Market tracker The NPD Group forecasted that the market will grow to reach 48 million unit sales this year, before peaking at 91 million units sold in 2015.
Following this, NPD said that it expects the market to contract in 2016 as hype for wearables wears off, before returning to growth in 2018 – but at a slower rate than the sector is currently experiencing.
"We expect that the dynamics of the wearables market will be similar to DVD, LCD TV, smartphones and other digital consumer markets with commoditsed hardware," said Paul Gray, director of European TV research for NPD DisplaySearch.
"The arrival of Samsung, LGE and other large, cost-efficient manufacturers to the wearables market would bring prices and margins down."
NPD divided the future of wearables into three possible outcomes: ‘forward into the past’, in which growth is driven by wealthy, fashionable early adopters then influencing the lower end of the market; ‘incidental to essential’, where utility-driven devices lock users in an iOS-like ecosystem with the right service offering; and ‘persuasive and pervasive’, where wearable health trackers and bio-sensors drive the essential adoption of devices for health and well-being reasons.

Galaxy maker looks to outfit mobile devices with cheaper alternative to Sony, Oculus VR efforts
[h=3]Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.[/h]
Samsung is the latest mainstream tech company whose name is being thrown about in relation to virtual reality, as Engadget is reporting the Galaxy mobile device maker is working on its own VR headset. What's more, the company reportedly is hustling to announce the peripheral this year, with the goal of beating Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus to market.
Despite the near-term launch, the Samsung VR headset will reportedly require as-yet unannounced new Galaxy phones and tablets. Engadget said some developers have already been given early versions of the tech, which at the moment is running on Samsung's flagship (already released) Galaxy efforts. The hardware is also said to feature an OLED screen at least as good as what Oculus put into the second Rift developer kit, and Samsung is aiming at a price point lower than either the Rift or Project Morpheus.
While it's unclear exactly what the headset will be, it won't be a play in the wearable computing market. Samsung is said to be focusing on the headset as a gaming peripheral first and foremost.

It’s almost 2015 and still don’t have the futuristic technology promised to us by Back to the Future Part II. Where are the flying cars, Mr. Fusions, or 19 Jaws movies? Most importantly, where are our hoverboards?
[cratesmith] got tired of waiting around and decided to take matters into his own hands. He combined the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset with the Wii Fit Balance Board to create a virtual hoverboard experience. He used the Unity3D engine (a favorite among Rift developers) to program the game engine. It’s a very rough demo right now, but the game comes complete with a simulated town to float around in and of course includes a model DeLorean.
Before you try to play this demo, you should know that it’s not without its faults. The primary problem [cratesmith] has experienced is with simulation sickness. His virtual reality system has no way to track body motion, which means that leaning back and forth on the Wii Fit board does not get translated to the equivalent virtual movement. The game must assume that the player stands straight up at all times, which is not an intuitive way to control something similar to a skateboard. The result is an off-putting experience that can break immersion and lead to a feeling of nausea.
A possible solution to this problem would be to use a camera style motion detector like the Microsoft Kinect. In fact, another Reddit user has recently posted a of another hoverboard simulator that uses the Oculus Rift, Wii Fit Board, and Kinect. Not much information is available about this second project, but we look forward to seeing updates in the future.
[createsmith] has not published the code for his demo because it’s still in the very early stages, but he has stated that he’s been giving it out to anyone who goes out of their way to ask. The hoverboard is probably the most coveted fictional technology from the 1989 adventure film. We know this because we’ve seen multiple projects over the years that were inspired by the movie. We’re excited to see it come to fruition in any form.

BBC Reports: 'Computer and Video Games, which in 1981 was the world's first magazine dedicated to gaming, is facing closure. The title, which has been online-only since 2004, may stop publishing at the end of a 45-day consultation period that began on 14 May, sources said. However, its publishers, Future, are also believed to be looking into selling off the brand. The magazine is behind the gaming industry's Golden Joystick Awards, a yearly event held since 1983.

ZeniMax Media and its subsidiary, id Software, filed suit against Oculus VR and the company's founder, Palmer Luckey, claiming that Oculus illegally misappropriated ZeniMax trade secrets and infringed on ZeniMax copyrights and trademarks while developing the Oculus Rift. ZeniMax filed the suit in federal court in the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
The suit claims that Oculus exploited ZeniMax IP, code and "technical know-how" (that is the technical term) regarding VR technology. ZeniMax said it gave Oculus "valuable intellectual property" under a strict NDA, and that Oculus illegally used its IP to create the Oculus Rift.
ZeniMax said it sought compensation from Oculus but was repeatedly denied. In May, The Wall Street Journal reported that ZeniMax asked Oculus for compensation after developer John Carmack left ZeniMax to become Chief Technology Officer at Oculus VR. At the time, ZeniMax said in a statement, "The proprietary technology and know-how Mr. Carmack developed when he was a ZeniMax employee, and used by Oculus, are owned by ZeniMax."

Palmer Luckey can hardly take a step without being stopped for pictures, questions or just friendly handshakes. I'm not surprised; we're at the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Expo, and Luckey just closed a speculative panel on the future of VR. Here, he's a celebrity, and with good reason -- the Expo floor is littered withOculus headgear, almost without competition. As we make our way to a more quiet area, Luckey tells me that his hardware isn't enough. "What we have that's impressing all these hardcore gamers and technology enthusiasts isn't good enough to be a consumer product."
