We've seen some pretty nutty uses (and a very sentimental one) for the Oculus Rift so far, but a Swedish ISP's might take the cake. For two days, Umea Energi had four people strap on one of the VR headsets rigged with a webcam and aRaspberry Pi, in an effort to illustrate what it'd be like if internet lag invaded real-life activities. The outfit had the lab rats do everyday stuff like go to aerobics class, make breakfast and play ping-pong while wearing the get-up and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. It's bananas; we know! The results are pretty hilarious -- failed attempts at cracking eggs and dropping crêpe batter onto a griddle, in particular. There's a first-person view of the shenanigans too, but if you're prone to motion-sickness it's probably best to steer clear. The Oculus dev kit's second version features a powered USB port on top of it, so let's hope that this type of experiment isn't the last.

Google isn't done upgrading Glass this month just because the KitKat update is out the door. It's rolling out another release this week that should be huge for frequent callers and photographers. You'll no longer miss a phone call just because Glass took control of the audio; the eyewear is now smart enough to route sound to your handset when you're using it to hold a conversation. It'll also be possible to back up photos and videos when away from WiFi, and you can clear those shots from your timeline with one swipe when you're done. There should bemore voice commands to accommodate third-party apps, as well. It's not clear exactly when the update hits, but it should give the surge of new Glass ownersone more thing to look forward to.

Word was leaking this week of some familiar faces in London hanging out together. Finally today an official cast listing for Star Wars Episode VII was handed down from on high to us mere mortals (Google Cache and Onion AV recap available). From the short release, 'Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.' Let's not bicker and argue about who shot first but instead come to an agreement on expected levels of almost certain disappointment. No, this willnot feature the Expanded Universe (EU) — you can now refer to those tales as 'Legends' which are not part of Star Wars canon. Instead prepare yourself for what will likely be the mother of all retcon films."

"If you play games online against other people, chances are you've come up against somebody who's obviously cheating. Wall hacks, aimbots, map hacks, item dupes — you name it, and there will always be a small (but annoying) segment of the gaming population who does it. Many of these cheating methods are bought and sold online, and PCGamer has done some investigative reporting to show us rule-abiding types how it all works. A single cheat-selling website manages to pull in $300,000 a year, and it's one of many. The people running the site aren't worried about their business drying up, either — game developers quickly catch 'rage cheaters,' and players cheating to be seen, but they have a much harder time detecting the 'closet cheaters' who hide it well. Countermeasures like PunkBuster and VAC are sidestepped quickly and easily."

Microsoft Research has developed a motion-sensing keyboard which can sense hand swipes and other gestures performed on and above the device.
The 'augmented mechanical' keyboard boasts a low-resolution matrix of infrared (IR) proximity sensors interspersed with the keys of a regular mechanical keyboard.
Users can swipe above the keyboard to scroll through documents or steer an imaginary wheel above the keyboard to control a driving game, for example.
Microsoft says it is experimenting with 'a large set of gestures' designed to be performed from the device, is testing accuracy and is gathering qualitative feedback from users.
"We propose the use of motion signatures - a technique that utilises pairs of motion history images and a random forest classifier to robustly recognise a large set of motion gestures," it said in a statement. "Our technique achieves a mean per-frame classification accuracy of 75:6% in leave–one–subject–out and 89:9% in half-test/half-training cross-validation."

The UK High Street is optimistic about the success of virtual reality headsets.
The new hardware from Oculus Rift/Facebook and Sony is expected to arrive at the back end of the year or early 2015. And leading buyers and store managers have told MCV that if the price is right, then these devices would fly off shelves.
“Like most new technologies and platforms in gaming, if our wonderfully creative development community support and get behind it, and if the hardware is competitively priced, customers are more likely to feel reassured and we’re sure VR will be a great success at retail,” said Darren Cairns, marketing boss at Green Man Gaming.
Robert Lindsay MD of Game Centre added: “Virtual reality could be the next big thing. With Microsoft and Sony both working on their own versions there’s obviously a push in that direction. Virtual reality has been touted for a number of years now and I suppose someone will have to get it right eventually.“
There are still members of the industry skeptical over the potential for VR. And Dixons PC gaming category manager Simon Urquhart says that going hands on with the products will help win consumers over.
“It’s great to see new and exciting gaming accessories and we will keep an eye on their development as they get closer to a retail release,” he said. “We want to make sure interested customers get all the right information on VR devices so it meets expectations.
“Dixons is a leader in new tech and we look forward to engaging new manufacturers prior to launch to see if we can bring their products to life. Allowing gamers to experience VR before buying will be the key to its success.
“The Facebook acquisition of Oculus is a strong indication that VR may have more mainstream, non-gaming applications and this will should add to the market potential of any VR devices”

The market may not be ready for the Omni VR treadmill just yet, but Jan Goetgeluk would rather his company be early than late
Last week, Virtuix announced a $3 million round of seed funding to complete its flagship product, the Omni virtual reality treadmill. While a far cry from Facebook's $2 billion acquisition of Oculus, the Virtuix investment is yet another indication that investors believe in the potential of virtual reality.
Speaking with GamesIndustry International after the funding was announced, Virtuix CEO Jan Goetgeluk stopped short of crediting the Facebook deal with drumming up investor interest, but nevertheless called it an exciting endorsement for the entire VR field.
"Haptics are fairly complicated; it's very difficult to make it work in a way that's affordable for consumers and accessible for a mass market."
"It certainly validated the message that we've been presenting to investors when fundraising, which is that VR is set to become a mass market new medium, with applications that stretch way beyond gaming," Goetgeluk said. "Social activites, health care, fitness, you name it...VR is not set to stay a niche; it's set to be a mainstream platform."
Facebook isn't the only company trying to turn VR into a mainstream platform. Last month's Game Developers Conference was a coming out party for a number of VR headsets, including Sony's Project Morpheus.
"I think investors now believe and see that given all these headsets coming to market, and given how compelling the experience is--not just for the headsets but the Omni--the bottom line is it's an excellent experience, and it's here to stay," Goetgeluk said. "It's not a fad. It's not just a fun thing to try out. It's an incredible experience and a new medium that will impact various aspects of our daily lives. And investors that tried the experience were convinced, and that's why they invested."
Even with the rush of companies looking to stake their claim in the VR field, the preponderance of activity seems to be in the headset market, with fewer companies looking to tackle the haptic part of the VR equation. Goetgeluk suggested two main reasons for that.
"One, the visual aspect of VR is certainly a crucial part," he said. "If there's no visual element of the VR system, then there's no virtual reality at all. It's also a problem that is easier to solve than haptics. Haptics are fairly complicated; it's very difficult to make it work in a way that's affordable for consumers and accessible for a mass market. The visual problem is an easier nut to crack, and certainly with immediate applications."
Of course, the Omni only addresses one element of that haptic problem. But when asked if Virtuix had plans to tackle other elements to complete the illusion of VR for players, Goetgeluk said the company had more pressing concerns in simply getting Omni to market.
"That's our focus right now; we don't have the resources to do much beyond that at this point," Goetgeluk said, adding, "The pressure is on to deliver a top quality product in a timely manner."
The Omni is set for a release this summer, which poses a potential problem. Virtuix is creating a $500 VR peripheral that is largely reliant on the user having a VR headset as well, but the two biggest names in the field, Sony and Oculus, have yet to even announce commercial release windows for their VR headsets. The idea of being a product "ahead of its time" doesn't really bother Goetgeluk.
"In tech, you're either early or you're late. So we're certainly early, but that's not necessarily a bad place to be," he said.
Given Virtuix's production capacities, showing up to the party early might not be the worst course of action. Virtuix has already sold 3,000 Omni treadmills, and new preorders placed through the company's site aren't estimated to ship until September. The company might not mind arriving a little earlier than the VR headsets, but it definitely needs them to arrive.

In the midst of themind-boggling Nico Nico Chou-Kaigi, an event hosted by one of Japan's leading video streaming sites, there was no shortage of Oculus Rift demos for attendees to drop their jaws at. Our allies at Engadget Japanese touredmilitary carriers, controlled robot arms... generally did a load of fun things and pretended like it was work. The Hashilus horse riding simulator looked to be the most intriguing, however. It combined a horse riding exercise machine with an Oculus Rift set (oh and a fan, for immersion), to offer a relatively straightforward no-bad-guys-to-kill race, up and down a few hills. It's a simplified experience, there's no steering here, but players can use the tambourine-ish controller to speed up, or slow down, their steed, all while drinking in that Rift-provided 360-degree view. Bikes, schmikes.
Extra: It looks like Oculus Rift founder Palmer Luckey even got the chance to try it out earlier this month. You can see his reaction after the break -- he seemed to like it.

Titanfall is the UK's best-selling game for the third week in a row.
EA and Respawn's Xbox-exclusive FPS once again saw off the threat of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil to retain its number one position, although it did so with a 41% drop in sales.
A lack of new entries mean the rest of the chart is merely a reshuffling of existing titles, with Call Of Duty: Ghosts climbing up from fifth to take bronze.

An opinion piece at Polygon raises an interesting question about how we perceive video games: why does so much effort go into having the plot make perfect sense? Think about games you've played that have a story. How much do you actually remember? You can probably name the protagonist and antagonist, but do you really know what they were fighting about? The article says, [Developer Jake Elliot] talked about the difference between a puzzle and a mystery. He argued that a puzzle has a solution, while a mystery may never be solved. A puzzle must make sense, but a mystery may well not. In the context of a game, the mechanics are the puzzle, while the theme is the mystery. The game play must be predictable, or the player will never master it. But the theme can be evocative and open-ended. A theme evokes the horrors of war; the mechanics remind you to reload your gun. The plot is stuck in the middle. It wants to make sense of a game, but the game play is already doing that. If we were watching a movie, the plot would provide the backbone, but games don't work like movies, and the plot can get in the way. It can feel awkward and unwelcome, while a looser thematic layer can be the most memorable part of the game.'

Many bothans died to bring us this information: The Star Wars Expanded Universe - or EU for short - is getting cut from Star Wars canon like hands get cut from the Skywalker family. In a news post on the official Star Wars site, Lucasfilm announced that only the six Star Wars films and the Clone Warstelevision show will be considered canon. In other words, as far as Luke, Leia, Han and the gang are concerned, there were no knights of the Old Republic, nor was the Force ever unleashed.
The Star Wars universe was previously structured under a multi-tier hierarchy system, where some events were considered more canon than others. For example, The Clone Wars' explanation for the origins of the Rebel Alliance weremore true than The Force Unleashed's. How does that make sense you ask? We dunno. Cosmic bacteria or something, probably.
In any case, according to Lucasfilm, "all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected." So from here on out, what you see is what the Star Wars universe gets. While that might be distressing for fans of things likeKnights of the Old Republic or the Jedi Knight games, Lucasfilm is still keeping the EU around - in a sense. Stories from the EU will be printed under the Legends banner, and the teams creating new content are still drawing inspiration from the EU.
Elements first created for Star Wars tabletop roleplaying games will be seen in the upcoming Star Wars Rebels TV show, for example. So who knows, maybe Kyle Katarn - a character who made his debut appearance in a Star Wars video game - might still show up, albeit in a way that fits with Lucasfilm's new creative direction.

The Oculus Rift and other virtual reality devices might be gaming's future, but who says we can't use them to enjoy a bit of our past, huh? The Sonic GDK for the Rift gives players a chance to see the world from the Blue Blur's point of view, and it looks ... pretty cool, actually. But then, there's a reason The Sonic Cycle exists.
Chadtronic, the Rift owner , warns that those who get woozy on rollercoasters and other such rides may want to steer clear, and we can't say we disagree. It's one thing to watch someone play the game on a single screen - we can't imagine what it would be like to have the game completely take over our vision via virtual reality.
Well, at least we learned one thing today: despite having two irises and pupils attached to one eyeball - which you would think would mess up depth perception, at least - Sonic seems to have perfect vision. We always wondered about that.

Ladies. Gentlemen. Look to your left. Now look to your right. Data from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) suggests that nearly 2 out of 3 Americans - 59 percent, to be exact - play games. That's right. One of you is a non-believer. .
Yes, the ESA's data for 2014 has been released, and there's plenty more numbers to be read, analyzed and scrutinized. For example, 68 percent of respondents reported they they play games on consoles, making them the most-played dedicated gaming device. Smartphones are catching up, however. The ESA's data reports that 53 percent of Americans play games on their smartphones, an increase of 22 percent since 2012.
While, according to the ESA, 95 percent of parents pay attention to the content of the games their children play, only 56 percent of parents found video games to be a positive part of their child's life. That may not be too big of an issue however, as the average gamer is 31 years old, and has been playing games for 14 years.
There's plenty more data to be found in the ESA's full report, if you're feeling so inclined.

March is typically when big releases coming to stores. This year was no different with EA’s Titanfall andSony's Infamous: Second Son hitting shelves.
Last month £64.5m was generated from software sales – 8.6 per cent less than last year. 2.1m units were sold in this time, a 19.9 per cent drop compared to March 2013.
Both Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite were released last March, which explains these higher figures.
Though the market is down year-on-year, it is charting as you would expect month-on-month. In 2013, there was a 55.9 per cent rise in revenue between February and March. This year the increase is to the tune of 53.3 per cent – so not too far from where it was last year.
This rise was helped by a number of new titles. In fact, six of the Top Ten games are titles released in March.
At the head of the Top 50 is Titanfall. EA’s blockbuster shooter debuts ahead of Square Enix’s Thief, Ubisoft's South Park: The Stick of Truth and Second Son.
The launch of Titanfall had a huge impact on Xbox One’s software market share. More money was made from Xbox One games in March than any other console.
This is also the first time since November that more games were sold for Microsoft's console than PS4.
The releases of Dark Souls II and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes also contributed to the increased market share held by Bandai Namco and Konami respectively.

Photographer and software engineer Dave Hunt has posted an article about his most recent project: a DIY cellphone based on a Raspberry Pi (he calls it a PiPhone). It has a touchscreen dialing interface for making calls, and it's built with off-the-shelf components. The total bill of materials clocks in at about $158: $40 for the rPi, $35 for the 320x240 touchscreen, $15 for the LiPo battery, $48 for the GSM module, and about $20 for miscellaneous other minor parts. Hunt says, '[The GSM/GPRS module] allow us to send standard AT commands to it to make calls, hang up, send texts, data etc. Overall a very clever module. Towards the bottom of the white PCB, you can see the SIM Card, which allows the module to associate with my local GSM network, and it’s using a regular prepaid SIM card, bought in my local phone store for €10. Below the GSM module, you can see the on.off switch and a DC-DC converter, which converts the 3.7volts from the LiPoly battery to 5volts needed by everything else.' He points out that the phone is not terribly practical, but it's a neat project. Hunt has done several others, including turning the Raspberry Pi into a controller for time-lapse photography. He'll be publishing the code he wrote for the PiPhone next week.

Since China temporarily lifted its ban on foreign video game consoles inJanuary, it was a matter of time before the government offered new rules to regulate console and game distribution. According to a Shanghai government release translated by Games in Asia, those rules will dictate the kind of content that won't be allowed to be sold in the country, such gambiling-related game features.
Additionally, anything deemed threatening to "China's national unity, sovereignty, or territorial integrity" and content that "instigates racial/ethnic hatred" won't be distributable in the country. Games also may not promote "obscenity, drug use, violence or gambling," as well as cults and superstitions. Approved games cannot violate China's constitution, nor can they harm its culture, traditions and public ethics.
The policies state that foreign companies must work with a local company to produce consoles within the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, such as Sony's PlayStation 4 or Microsoft's Xbox One, the latter of which arrived in 26 more regions just last month. Plus, games in China must go through an approval process with Shanghai's culture department, which will take "no longer than 20 days." This applies to game updates with new content, such as DLC, even if the game itself was already approved. Lastly, all console games will be required to have a simplified Chinese version, so publishers won't be able to simply re-sell Hong Kong and Taiwan versions of their games.

Google offered Glass to the public as part of a one day sale not long ago. Now it seems that anyone can order one again without an invite. There's been no announcement so far, no fan fair -- a few Redditors just happened to discover that you can head straight to the order page and add one to your cart. We've tried it from multiple accounts that we can confirm did not sign up for the Explorer program, so it appears that Glass is legitimately available to anyone with a Google account. We've reached out to Mountain View for comment and we'll let you know as soon as we hear back. In the meantime you can go order your own Explorer Edition unit now. So long as you're comfortable coughing up the $1,500 asking price, of course.
Update: Well, it appears that Glass is not available to everyone after all. Google just never pulled the URL for the shop down following the April 15th sale. The company told Android Community it would be pulling the site down soon. And, sadly, if it seemed like you successfully put in an order today chances are that won't be honored. According to the statement customers not already "in the pipeline" won't be getting Glass.
