We’ve seen Arduino-based game controllers before, but the UnoJoy project wants to make it easy for you to plug them into a gaming console.
The project is targeted at the Arduino UNO. Why only that hardware… isn’t Arduino universal? Well yes, but in this case the bootloader needs to be overwritten so that the Arduino will enumerate as an approved controller on your game system. Here the device is being put into DFU mode in preparation for flashing.
Once that part’s done it’s time to get to work on your own hardware interface. The UnoJoy library provides all of the hooks you need to push controller data to the game console, it’s up to you to use the Arduino IDE to decide when these events happen. This would be a great opportunity to make the Pinball Stop controllers work with the Xbox Live Arcade games. Or take a look after the break to see [Alan Chatham] using the library to control Gran Turismo as if it were an NES Power Pad game.

John Riccitiello outlines his four major rules for the mobile games market
EA chief executive John Riccitiello was a keynote speaker today at CTIA Wireless in New Orleans, where he outlined the future of the mobile landscape as he sees it and how game publishers and mobile firms will become great partners in the years ahead.
"Games, more than any other type of application or function, are driving dramatic growth in the mobile industry. Mobile games will co-exist and even interoperate with games on consoles, PCs, and cable television," he began.
Riccitiello noted that 67 percent of all revenue generated on the App Store comes from games. He added that there are ten times the number of mobile devices as there are game consoles, and so "the inescapable conclusion is that mobile has become a game platform - it's a peer to PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo systems."
The thrust of Riccitiello's presentation was an overview of his four major insights or "rules" about the evolving mobile games industry.
Rule #1 - "When a CPU is introduced to a consumer electronics device, gaming quickly becomes the dominant application."
Riccitiello stressed that games were never projected to be the number one sales generator on iPhone but that consumers spoke with their wallets. "History shows that whether it's a PC or a tablet or a phone, when people are allowed to choose their preferred content, games win," he said.
Although this doesn't apply directly to mobile, he said the rule easily translates to television. Riccitiello anticipates big things for IPTV and gaming.
"You're about to see what happens again, this time on television. IPTV holds tremendous promise and some very unique opportunities for our combined industries. I'm biased but I'm betting that when cable consumers have the option to play games, TV will become less popular and gaming will go through the roof," he said, which is an interesting comment in light of our recent op-ed from Mark Sorrell. "The point is games win every time."
Rule #2 - "This is a branded world."
Riccitiello pointed out that out of the many hundreds of thousands of apps on the App Store, about 75,000 are games. The sad fact for many game creators, though, is that most of these don't make money. Riccitiello says that's due to game quality and brand recognition.
"What's interesting is that precious few of these games are ever played, and fewer still generate revenue. We call many of these 'lunch boxes' - colorful graphics that sit on top of a poor application. What's inside is often a disappointment," Riccitiello observed. "But gamers are very smart consumers... they gravitate towards games with the best reputation and highest quality."
He noted that dramatic improvements in mobile technology and top developers flocking to mobile platforms, with many creating versions of core IPs that are as good or better than what's on a PS2. "You're going to see the game brands known for quality rising up in the charts," he said, reflecting on the success of EA's own Dead Space for iOS.
26 of the top 100 games on App Store are brands that come from other media. The bottom line, according to the EA boss, is that mobile gamers are actually willing to pay if the content is very good. "Consumers want and expect to pay for quality; they really expect to pay." He noted that there will always be room for quirky independents with breakout hits, but "the trend is going to benefit publishers with globally recognized brands - some will be new like Angry Birds and some will have been tested by time like The Sims and Plants vs. Zombies."
Rule #3 - "The platform wars won't be an A or B or C, it's going to be A and B and C."
For Riccitiello, all the talk of mobile and social gaming ruining the hardcore console business is hogwash. He sees all the platforms ultimately widening the audience and complementing one another.
"Frankly, I compare this to predictions in the 1950s when people said television was going to destroy motion pictures... TV didn't destroy movie box office, YouTube didn't destroy TV and mobile games are not going to wipe out the console business; quite the opposite," he said.

UK retailers saw a year-on-year decline in sales as excessive rain deterred shoppers from venturing to the High Street.
Like-for-like sales across all sectors fell by 3.3 per cent when compared to the same period last year, according to data from the British Retail Consortium.
The BBC reports that the worst affected sectors included footwear, which recorded its largest decline since January 2008, and women's and children's wear.
BRC director general Stephen Roberston blamed the weather and the fact that the UK has re-entered recession.
"The wettest April since records began has put a dampener on retailer's fortunes," he said.
"Consumers, struggling to balance their household budgets, remain reluctant to spend unless they really have to and the weakening economy is likely to mean people are even more cautious about their finances."
April's rainfall passed the previous record of 120.3mm, set in April 2000. Met Office figures showed that temperatures across the UK were the lowest for April in 23 years.
Further bad news came when Clinton Cards revealed it would be entering administration. The retailer has asked for trading in its shares to be suspended.
It wasn't all bad news. Sainsbury's reported annual sales of £24.5bn, a rise of 6.8 per cent, and stronger-than-expected underlying profits of £712m.

It's fair to say we admire the Razer Naga MMO 'round these parts -- as much for its thumb-thrashing controls, as for its democratic diplomacy. Now the original is back, and updated for 2012. What's new? Well, there's a redesigned anti-slip, fingerprint-fighting finish, three interchangeable side panels and a re-optimized button placement. It's all designed to stop your fevered swipes from landing your mouse on the other side of the LAN, and help fend off a dreaded bout of "Warfare-wrist". Reckon you deserve an upgrade? US and EU gamers can get their $80 dollar-laden hand on it now, and the rest of the realm later in Q2.

Yet another retailer has made a new move for video games market share – Blockbuster.
Called Blockbuster VIP Gamer, the retailer boldly claims its new loyalty program will “provide gamers with the most rewarding experience in the gaming market”.
Unlike other schemes this new offer doesn’t just reward consumers for spending cash – although they will earn 100 points for every £1 spent in-store and online – but they will also earn points for watching trailers and rating gamers on the website.
Trade-ins will also be rewarded, as will entering competitions.
Rewards range from discount vouchers and free rentals to free hardware if enough credits are amassed. The rewards will be redeemable either in-store or online.
“We know gamers and are sure that they will find our reward scheme better than anything they have seen before,” head of marketing Cat Kebbeh stated. “In this competitive market, customers demand the best and we want to engage with them and reward their loyalty with us."
Customers can sign up to Blockbuster VI Gamer at www.blockbuster.co.uk/vipgamer – this alone will earn 2,500 points.

The company filed for the name "Star Wars 1313" for use with video games, as well as toys, trading cards, sticker books, pencil sharpeners, online social networking services, and anything else that can possibly bear the Star Wars logo.
The document contains no indication of what "Star Wars 1313" means; we knew the series was set "a long time ago," but don't know if that translates to 700 years in Earth time. However, a quick Wookieepedia search reveals "CT-1313" as a name used by Boba Fett in a Star Wars novel. So it could be a Boba Fett-focused thing. Dengar's still waiting for his big break.

Capcom sees sluggish sales overall for the fiscal year but Raccoon City beats projections
Despite drawing the ire of game critics everywhere, Resident Evil: Raccoon City managed to tally a total of 1.7 million units sold. Capcom said that the latest Resident Evil was the top seller of the year, beating out Street Fighter X Tekken by around 300,000 units.
The news comes as the Japanese publisher reported a sales drop of around 16 percent to 86.02 billion yen ($1.02 billion / 824 million euros)for the fiscal year ended on March 31. Operating income also took a hit, sinking to $154.1 million, with net income declined 13.2 percent year-over-year to 6.72 billion yen ($84.06 million / 64.4 million euros).
Capcom remains upbeat about the future, now that Resident Evil 6 is in development. The highly anticipated title is expected to bolster the company up to $1.31 billion in sales for the year ending March 31, 2013. Earnings are projected to hit $122.6 million in that same period.

Electronic Arts took to London last month to show the press its upcoming triple-A blockbusters.
And alongside the core console shooters, it demonstrated its latest PC, Facebook and iOS titles.
The biggest games on display were shooters including upcoming modern day blaster Medal of Honor Warfighter (October 23rd).
EA also fully revealed the upcoming sci-fi sandbox shooter Crysis 3, which isn’t available until spring 2013.
PopCap unveiled special retail bundles for Bejeweled 3 at the event, too. The DS version features Bejeweled 3 only (and will also be available over the Nintendo online store as well), while the PC, 360 and PS3 retail editions come bundled with different PopCap games. For example, Zuma and Peggle on PC and Zuma and Feeding Frenzy 2 on PS3.
There were a number of major digital properties showcased at the event for console, Facebook, iOS and PC, too.
The Battlefield 3: Close Quarters DLC (June 2012) was revealed at the showcase, as were mobile versions of Need for Speed, Battleship, Burnout, Shaun the Sheep and Mass Effect.
The customary new FIFA game must be due a reveal soon, too.

Pay attention. One of the most popular online ‘teen hangouts’ says digital games need to fight harder to battle brief attention spans.
The man in charge of Habbo says that the migration of games to the web is inevitable, but makes fighting for consumers’ time more difficult.
“10 years ago, in online games, the assumption was that people spend all their time looking at their computer screens,” CEO Paul LeFontaine told MCV.
“But today all of us spend less time looking only at a computer screen. We’re also looking at our phone screens and our tablet screens.
“So we have to adjust our product to match the time people have for us, when they use our service around TV, radio, online or other devices.”
Each month over 10m 13 to 15-year-olds log on to Habbo’s user-generated and branded chat rooms, which play host to browser games and celebrity ‘appearances’. The firm also recently launched a new mobile app.
“Fortunately we’re used to dealing with a segment that has a very short attention span, so we always think in terms of short interactions. For us, thinking about mobile is natural because short attention span is very much the audience we have.
“But attention span and time is probably the largest challenge for any media company wanting to move from one platform to another.”

I inherited this feature from Mike McWhertor, who has been gone from Kotaku more than six months, and who I hope to see again in San Diego at Comic-Con. "Mike," I would always say to him, "if we get fired, well, we'll finally have time to play all the video games we never got to play because we were too busy playing video games."
I have no clue what I'll be playing this weekend. I'm flat exhausted, and I get to mind the site for 48 hours unaccompanied. I recently modified my Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 settings to give me the hardest swing difficulty while still preserving my greens reads and caddie suggestions. It's produced a truer appraisal of what my golfer's skill would actually be at this point in his career. It's a difficult game.
I also want to finish up the first Prototype and jump back in for my semi-regular grind with DC Universe Online. And I have a righthanded screwballer languishing in the minor leagues of MLB 12 The Show, getting hosed on the outside strike every fifth day by that no-good son-of-a-bitch bastard Wally Hughes. By the way, I got an email from a guy at Sony San Diego today. He said my guess as to Wally's namesake was off. The umpires have more prosaic origins—Porter Callahan comes from a bar near the studio, which serves Sierra Nevada porter, for example.
I may also play nothing. Three wild turkeys like the one above came down off the butte today and hung out in my driveway. Watching them mate was entertainment enough.
What are you playing this weekend?

For the lucky few who have a Raspberry Pi board in their hands, you can now use the GPIO pins as a web interface (German, google translation). [Chris] is turning this magical board is turning a small device that can play 1080p video into something that can blink LEDs via the web.
The build started with an example of driving GPIO pins under Linux. [Chris] cobbled together a bit of PHP and Javascript on the Raspberry pi. Whenever he goes to the website hosted on the Pi, he’s greeted with the status and direction of a couple of expansion IO pins.
On a semi-related note, [Tony] is building a GPIO MIDI interface for his Pi. Yes, he could just get a USB to MIDI adapter and call it a day, but this is a far more professional looking solution to all the MIDI goodness the RasPi will deliver. If you’ve got any info on other RasPi breakout boards you’ve seen, send them in on the tip line.

Since the Arduino was launched years ago, many ‘shields’ or add-on boards providing additional functionality have been released. There are hundreds of different shields, from video capture shields to touch screen shields. Now that the Raspberry Pi is out in the wild, it was only a matter of time before a RasPi to Arduino shield bridge was created.
[Omer] calls his bridge ‘Ponte’ and it allows Arduino shields to be used with the incredible horsepower of an embedded Linux system. While [Omer] originally expected to write the RasPi to Arduino software converter himself, but foundWiringPi halfway through the build. Of course this build comes just a day after we saw a tutorial on controlling the GPIO pins on the RasPi, and we expect to see similar GPIO-hacking builds in the future.
Right now, the Ponte only supports Arduino Uno-sized shield, so the possibility of an all-in-one RepRap controller using the RAMPS motor driver is impossible for now. We expect that to change very quickly as more people get their RasPis delivered.

It has been six years in the making, with the original goal of the project intending to reignite computer programming in schools across the country. Despite those honorable intentions, the $35 ARM-based credit-card sized computer has captured the imagination of programmers, consumers and tinkerers alike, resulting in unprecedented demand for the product. Last month the first 10,000 credit-card sized computers were set to make their way to those who pre-ordered them back in February. TechSpot takes a look at the Pi Model B, covering the basic steps for setting up the computer, as well as basic post-installation tasks those first using it might encounter.

US analyst PiperJaffray has boldly claimed that "gamers are exiting the [console] market for alternative forms of entertainment and leisure activities".
The prediction comes ahead of NPD’s April numbers for the US video games market which the analyst belives will once again be down year-on-year.
"Consumers are increasingly demanding interactive media experiences that are social, mobile and free to play,” the firm stated.
"These activities include photo/video sharing and social gaming, all of which are activities that the current consoles and new handhelds do not support effectively."
Looking ahead to May, it thinks Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 will emerge as the monthly champ, outselling Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Future, Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma and Sniper Elite V2 combined.

Consumer research firm Kantar Worldpanel has said that HMV and Asda are “best-placed” to gain from this year’s spate of GAME and Gamestation closures.
“[GAME’s] customer requires a more specialist, in-depth range,” analyst Craig Armer told Retail Week.
“HMV had said it would trim its range of games but I suspect that will not happen now.”
Indeed, HMV this morning admitted that it anticipates growth in 2012 in part thanks to the increased business coming its way following GAME’s spell of trouble.
Asda were also highlighted due to what Armer describes as “a strong offer and heavy discounts”. For the 12 weeks ending March 18th Asda was the strongest supermarket in the entertainment sector, increasing its market share to 9.3 per cent.
Of course, both Tesco and Sainsbury’s have already made moves on former GAME customers.
