There's only one day left of E3, but fear not – the next big games show is only two months away.
Gamescom will return to Cologne's Koelnmesse on August 15th and runs until August 19th. And this time it will be even bigger – 140,000 square metres bigger to be precise.
"Gamescom is the world's largest games show, with 276,000 visitors in 2011," said project manager Tim Endres.
"It is the only games show in the world to cover all different segments of gaming, from the strong basis of PC and console to online and browser gaming. And in 2011, we added mobile and social games.
"So only in Cologne can retailers, publishers and journalists get to see the whole world of the international gaming industry. And on even more space than last year – we're adding another 140,000 square metres."
Endres also encouraged the games industry to begin preparing for the European show as soon as possible.
An international press conference will be held on Thursday, June 28th, providing information on exhibitors, program of the show and more. This will be livestreamed at gamescom.streamview.de.
Visitors can also use Gamescom's services when booking flights and tickets at www.gamescom.de.

And the next generation will have a long lifecycle, predicts the Id technical director
The technical director of Id Software John Carmack has suggested that traditional consoles may soon become a niche product for highly dedicated, purist consumers.
His prediction came as he discussed the way cloud technology may soon see gaming proliferate across numerous devices, reportsCVG.
"Console gaming might morph" said Carmack. "You can certainly see cloud gaming being built into every display device and traditional consoles could become more like the audiophile niche of people who want the extreme experience there."
He added: "I hesitate to predict anything five, six years into the future, but the next generation should last a long time."
The 'audiophile' stereo-buying demographic sees consumers pay vast sums investing in high end audio equipment, which is often customised with meticulous effort.

It's not the mouse we expected to see here at E3, given what slid through Uncle Sam's FCC fingers a few weeks ago, but Razer has unveiled its new Taipan gaming mouse here at E3 2012. Apparently, Razer has learned to love lefties from the jump with its most recent rodent, as the Taipan is an ambidextrous unit suitable for any gamer. The outside of the Taipan is swathed in tactually-pleasing matte black plastic, with a glowing Razer logo in the palm rest and a clickable scroll wheel ringed in similar neon green lighting. It's got nine programmable buttons in all: right and left click, the clickwheel, plus two buttons just south of the scroller and two more embedded in each of the Taipan's flanks.

Industry image improves as gaming becomes more prevalent
Fourty nine percent of U.S. households own a gaming console, the Entertainment Software Association announced today.
In its annual factsheet "Essential Facts about the Computer and Video Game Industry", the ESA highlighted the growth of the industry into the mainstream of American culture.
"Games have evolved from a thing you buy to an experience enjoyed by a wide and diverse population everywhere, anytime, on any screen," said ESA president and CEO Michael D. Gallagher.
"The creativity of our developers and publishers produces an ever-expanding variety of games in different formats and across all platforms. Their innovations drive consumer demand for our products, solidifying our industry's position as one of the strongest and most cutting-edge sectors in the American economy."
Mobile gaming has doubled its exposure in the past year, growing from twenty to forty percent, and gaming on wireless devices also doubled, climbing from thirteen to 26 percent of the population.

Mad Catz is, quite literally, gearing up for the Wii U's impending holiday launch. Aligned neatly withNintendo's keynote at E3 today, the accessory maker's outing a host of peripherals intended to play nicely with the gaming titan's next gen, tablet-y splash. Prospective early adopters eyeing what the Big N's selling can look forward to a pair of Wiimote- and Wii U GamePad-compatible Power Up ChargeDocks, a FlipStand protective cover and a TRITTON Kunai headset which will also work across Sony's current gaming platforms. There's no pricing available yet for this add-on kit, but the lineup should make its market bow in step with the console's looming launch. Hit up the break to peruse the official pressers.

There's a great video game land rush happening on the mobile front, as developers and hardware manufacturers work map out precisely how users will play with their smartphones and tablets. We've seen plenty of peripheral makers give it a shot, hoping to transform decidedly clunky touchscreen gameplay into something more akin to devoted consoles. Some, like Ion, have taken a fairly whimsical approach to the process, giving the world the iCade, a tablet controller shaped like a small arcade cabinet.
Nyko's going a much more straight forward route with PlayPad and PlayPad Pro, Bluetooth controllers that intend on bringing console gaming over to the mobile side. The PlayPad is the smaller of the two devices. It ships in a spring loaded eyeglasses-style case. Also inside is a small stand that you can unfold to prop up your Android tablet in portrait or landscape. The controller itself is quite small and fairly light. It has two circle pads on the front, a d-pad, four face buttons, shoulder buttons and a giant home button in the center.

CGI teasers might make marketing sense, but publishers' continued reliance on the form disguises a worrying lack of faith in the medium
"Footage not representative of actual gameplay". It's the little badge of shame required to be worn by all video games ads on TV that use CGI instead of genuine in-game material.
That publishers are forced to flash this text up on screen, as tinily and briefly as they dare, is a reminder to them and us that the primary purpose is to deceive. It's a minor humiliation and one for which they should feel ashamed: but not for the usual reasons of cynical, sleight-of-hand shenanigans.
"The history of video games is one defined by the limits of technology - and the astounding feats produced by game makers fighting against them"
Don't worry, I'm not going to waste my or your time wailing with naive piety about the dark arts of marketing. It'd be pretty stupid, for instance, to suggest that Dead Island teaser - which resembled the game rather like Prince Harry resembles his father - was anything other than a PR masterstroke, a standalone work of brilliance that helped turn a middle-of-the-road zombie game into a major success story.
Rather, I think the main charge against third-party CGI these days is much more serious: it's selling the medium short, and in doing so exposes the creative insecurity of a multi-billion dollar global entertainment industry.
The history of video games is one defined by the limits of technology - and the astounding feats produced by game makers fighting against them. As soon as games starting coming on CDs, game makers and marketeers quickly realised that if the hardware wasn't yet up to realising the 'vision', well, no matter: a bit of FMV would do the trick.
What was perfectly understandable then, is less easy to excuse now. It's weird and pretty sad to think that in an age that has produced spectacles such as Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, L.A. Noire, Journey, Call of Duty, and sports games to rival TV broadcasts, more time and money than ever is spent on manufacturing material via a third-party to sell games.
In the vast majority of cases the need for it appears inexplicable - until you consider that a deep-seated lack of self-confidence is the root cause. As the arts critic Ekow Eshun remarked at a recent GameCity debate in London: "One of the primary motors of culture right now is gaming; but at same time that goes unacknowledged".
And there's the rub. Gaming now enjoys phenomenal mainstream reach and cultural impact, and yet is still viewed by significant chunks of society as, to use Eshun's word, a "cult".
Like an adolescent desperate to be taken seriously by grown-ups, it hurts us when our passion and vocation is too readily dismissed; and we react with Pavlovian, thin-skinned outrage at the slightest needling.
But as Rob pointed out last week, we really ought to be beyond this now. Gaming, in all its forms, is a force that can't be stopped and its influence can no longer be ignored by rival entertainment industries.
Any gamer can see how action movies have progressively become more game-like - because that's what the audience expect. Even literature has changed. Speaking at the GameCity debate, Charlie Higson, the British comedian and children's author, revealed: "I'm aiming my books at kids who play games. I've had to take on board that games are incredibly alluring and entertain in an overpowering way: why read this book rather than play this game? You've got to give them the same thrills and kicks in the book - while also getting across what they're not getting out of a game."
Yet while others adapt, gaming appears paralysed by its sense of worth. So, while we readily acknowledge how negative attitudes towards games have held back their broader acceptance, we seem as a whole far less well aware of how we continue to allow outsiders' perceptions to hold us back creatively and intellectually.
You can see it in the starry-eyed, needy worship of Hollywood and the feeble view that simply aping a more-established medium is an end in itself, rather than stealing the useful bits while exploring the amazing stuff only possible in interactive entertainment.
You see it most nakedly (and expensively), though, in the CGI trailers for big budget games designed to be awe-inspiring cinematic experiences. Some of these teasers, as I've said, are superb works in their own right, and can unquestionably boost sales; but when you consider what's possible with today's tech, all represent a failure of imagination and a disturbing lack of faith in a game to speak for itself.
"Think about the message it sends out about your confidence in a development team when, to announce a triple-A project you farm out the trailer to a separate CGI studio that has nothing to do with it"
Publishers, think about the message it sends out about your confidence in the talent of a development team when, to announce a triple-A project you farm out the trailer to a separate CGI studio that has nothing to do with it and no interest in using any of it.
Look what happened last week with the nuns-and-guns Hitman: Absolution fiasco. Whatever one thinks of its content, the implication that an eye-catching, exciting trailer could not have been produced using in-game material is absurd and painfully revealing.
And then consider a company like Rockstar. Its trailers are always an event in themselves and always, of course, in-game. How did the publisher reveal Grand Theft Auto V? With what was in effect an in-engine environment demo with a voiceover. Okay, so they hardly need to whip-up interest, but even so: that's confidence in your work.
So whilst I fully sympathise with the frustration of those gamers who feel they're being taken for fools by companies that peddle pre-rendered cinematics they know won't feature in the final product; and with those who actually rather enjoy a well-made CGI teaser for what it is; and, yes, with those whose job it is simply to shift more copies, what troubles me above all is the incapacitating belief - in 2012 - that games still aren't good enough to sell themselves.
If we aren't prepared to trust in the medium, why should anyone else be?

June 5th, 2012, 23:34 Posted By: wraggster
OnLive has claimed that it has “millions of subscribers worldwide”, but has once again decided not to reveal the number of gamers paying to use its service.
“OnLive went live at E3 2010 with just 19 games in its library on only PCs and Macs over Ethernet,” an official statement reads.
“OnLive faced a huge wall of skepticism as to whether the technology would ever work and if it did, whether it could scale, and even then, whether it could reliably deliver gameplay on a consistent basis over consumer broadband connections.
“Two years later at E3 2012, OnLive is celebrating its two-year anniversary with hundreds of games from over 60 publishers, and is not only available on PCs and Macs, but on TVs, tablets and smartphones over wired, Wi-Fi and cellular connections.”
The company also claims to have enjoyed “100 per cent uptime” since its launch last year, meaning that the service has never been unavailable.
Also confirmed are a number of new titles coming to OnLive:
· Aliens: Colonial Marines
· The Cave
· Darksiders II
· Hell Yeah!
· Hitman: Absolution
· Inversion
· London 2012 – The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games
· Metro: Last Light
· Ravaged
· Saints Row: The Third: Enter the Dominatrix™
· Sid Meier’s Civilization V: Gods & Kings
· South Park: The Stick of Truth
OnLive has also announced a deal with LG that will see its streaming gaming services integrated into its Smart TV range.
“It’s always been our mission to make top-quality gaming accessible to everyone, everywhere,” OnLive CEO and founder Steve Perlman stated.
“OnLive adds no cost to LG Smart TVs, but delivers a full console-class experience. We’re excited to make on-demand top-tier gaming an integral part of the living room entertainment system on LG’s state-of-the-art TVs.”

At this point, most people (in the tech world, at least) are quite familiar with Gaikai's cloud gaming platform, which lets users have a not-quite-console quality gaming experience on any device. The technology has found its way onto Facebook and in LG TVs, and now Gaikai's bringing gaming to Samsung TVs, too. Called Samsung Cloud Gaming (SCG), it'll be available via the Smart Hub on Samsung 7000 series and up Smart TVs in the US this summer. The technology powering SCG is the same as what's behind LG's service, but Sammy's customized the UI to suit its sensibilities. We got a chance to speak with Gaikai CEO David Perry about his company's latest partnership, so join us after the break for more.

OnLive launched in the summer of 2010 streaming games to PCs or Macs, and now two years later it has returned to E3 feeling pretty good about the state of cloud gaming and its place in it. Among a series of announcements going out are news that it will be demonstrating gaming on smart TVs for the first time on LG's G2 Google TVs with support for up to four universal OnLive controllers at once. The Google TV viewer app has been out, although OnLive gaming has been closely tied to Vizio's upcoming Google TV models in the past while LG showed off Gaikai access at CES. It's not available on retail units yet, but is expected to be added in a software update, with an eye towards adding support for Cinema 3D gaming later on. At the same time it's rolling out an update to its in-browser gaming clients that lets publishers and retailers launch players into games without creating a login.
Finally, we've got the new OnLive MultiView feature that lets players see the video stream of another player without exiting their own session. As suggested in the press release (all are included after the break), it can let you check in on a friend's game as it happens, or even see from a teammate's perspective during a co-op match. That feature is currently in closed beta and is set to launch later this year, read on for all the details about what OnLive is up to and a list of games coming soon that includesDarksiders II, Civilization V: Gods and Kings and more.

Next generation LG with Google TV brings cloud gaming direct to TV
OnLive has announced that it will be launching its cloud gaming service on LGs next generation of smart TVs.
A day after it was announced that rival cloud gaming service Gaikai would be powering its service through Samsung TVs, OnLive's partnership will keep competition fierce as cloud gaming services jockey for position in a market that may soon see consoles as a thing of the past.
LGs new range of Google TV powered displays, coulpled with OnLive's cloud gaming service, eliminates the need for a dedicated console, powering AAA quality games directly through the TV set.
The service will incorporate all of Onlive's current features, and future software updates will make a number of games available in 3D.

[Jake] took some cheap hardware and figured out a way to use it as a huge home automation network. He’s chose a Raspberry Pi board to connect the radio controlled power outlets to his network. He wrote about his project in two parts, the first ishacking the RC outlet controller and the second is using the Raspberry Pi to manipulate it.
These RC outlets are a pass-through for appliances that connect to mains (lamps, consumer electronics, christmas trees, etc). Often the protocol used by the cheap-as-dirt remote is difficult to work with, but [Jake] really hit it out of the part on this one. In addition to simulating button presses for up to fifteen devices on the remote, he replaced the DIP switch package. This lets him change the encoding, essentially allowing the one device to control up to 32 sets of outlets. Theoretically this lets him command 480 devices from the Raspberry Pi. Since that board is a web server it’s just a matter of coding an interface.
Some of the inspiration for this hack came from the whistle-controlled appliance hack.

If you thought Turtle Beach was only announcing its MLG-approved gaming headsets at E3, let us tell you that those are only a sliver of everything it plans to offer this fall. As per usual with most Call of Dutyreleases, you can expect a barrage of Black Ops II headsets from the company when it hits shelves, including the Ear Force Earbuds, Tango, Sierra, X-ray and Kilo and priced $80 to $300. You can expect LED lights, Bluetooth functionality, and virtual surround sound on some of the more expensive models. Moving along, TB has partnered with Nintendo to created licensed headsets for the Wii U that'll also work for the 3DS, and a we're told prototype model will be on display at the show floor.
As if that weren't enough, a new series of smaller "La" ear-blasters have also been detailed. You'll have choice between the USB-powered PLa (PS3) XLa (Xbox) which feature 40mm drivers, independent game and chat controls, microphone monitoring and bass boost functionality for when you need morewub. A computer version dubbed XLa will also be available, stripping away most of the aforementioned features in favor of 4-pole 3.5mm jack for easy compatibility between your devices. Lastly, the M7 has been added to the company's lifestyle lineup, featuring 50mm drivers, an inline remote / mic, a faux-leather headband and memory foam earcup pads for noise isolation. There's no word on pricing or availability for the LA and M-series headsets -- nor are any images available yet for the Black Ops II headsets -- but you'll find more details on everything mentioned in the press release after the break. We'll be sure to update you with more info when we have it.

Developers encouraged to submit proposals as Gambitious funding model readies for summer launch
A new games-specific equity-based crowdfunding platform has made a call for developers to submit proposals.
Gambitious is pitched as the first professional crowd funding platform exclusively dedicated to the games industry, and has now joined forces with a group of developers and publisher Mastertronic.
The platform, hailing from Holland, offers a hybrid model where both consumer donations and equity investment can be directed towards a given project. At E3 2012 Gambitious has asked developers established and newly-formed to prepare proposals.
“We are absolutely ecstatic to be working with guys who have been championing and empowering independent game developers for so long, as we all see the crowdfunding opportunity as something that, if handled properly, could truly change the industry for indies of all sizes," said Paul Hanraets, Gambitious co-founder.
The platform will cover funding across both the United States and the European Union, and will let developers indicate how much capital is required to fund a project, and the amount of equity in the project offered in return.

The duo of divisive D-words will be abundant at E3 this week – we expect to lose count of how many pitches and game demonstrations use the terms ‘digital’ and ‘download’.
But let’s not forget the three Bs: boxes are big business.
True, downloads have become a sturdier pillar of the industry than they once were, and current charts sadly neglect to account for digital sales when measuring a game’s success. But they have not outstripped those of boxed yet.
Earlier this year, MCV revealed that the UK boxed software market generated £1.42bn in 2011 – outperforming the combined revenues taken from browser and download games (£520m) and mobile games (£158m).
In the grand scheme of things, boxed games remain the best way to service consumers.
Yes, downloads may be more convenient for PC owners who wanted to play Skyrim within seconds of the game’s launch. But only dedicated gamers have a rig or broadband connection solid enough to make this process easier than picking up a disc at the shops. How many people would have preferred (or even known about) a digital version of Zumba Fitness? Would millions of Call of Duty fans buy a download code at a midnight launch?
With the next generation approaching, the size and complexity of games are inevitably going to increase. Surely, the disc will remain the most convenient way to access these new releases? Retail will always be needed to launch new consoles – and where there are consoles, there are games waiting to be purchased.
“Whilst we see a steady stream of new ways to deliver game experiences, there remains a large proportion of gamers – young and old, hardcore and casual – who are keen to purchase, enjoy and trade physical product,” says Gem’s group strategic development director Alex Croft.
“Boxed product is far from dead.”

Gearbox co-founder and CEO Randy Pitchford has praised Nintendo's Wii U GamePad for being the "best controller I've ever had from Nintendo".
While Gearbox has passed development of the Wii U version ofAliens: Colonial Marines to Shoot Many Robots developer Demiurge Studios, Pitchford has had regular contact with the project.
"When I play with the controller, I immediately realize that for the types of games I like to play and make, this is the best controller I've ever had from Nintendo," he told Gamasutra in an interview.
"For Aliens: Colonial Marines, it's really exciting to have that screen there because I can do things that are very unique to this universe.
"For instance, we have a motion tracker in this universe. Now our motion tracker can literally be in our hands and we can see and hear it –and scan the room in 360 degrees, since it's a motion device."
It's high praise for a controller that has yet to prove its hardcore credentials, and curious too given that Nintendo has just unveiled its Wii U Pro controller - a device much more in line with traditional pad design and one surely aimed at courting those players put off by Nintendo's idosyncratic interface designs.

Tablet PCs will conquer the market, says Crytek CEO
The next-generation of home consoles will be the last, the CEO of Crytek has claimed.
Speaking to German site Golem, Cevat Yerli said that tablet PCs would conquer the market as the market for hardcore gaming consumers gets “high in the minority”.
He added that he believed that customers are more interested in short burst games, with the quality of console no longer being a key factor for demand.
“The console will displace the PC, you hear it again and again,” said Yerli.

The ledgers of history are littered with the rotting corpses of well intentioned, but ultimately unsuccessful, attempts to put computers in the hands of the young, underprivileged or severely impoverished.
