An ambitious new Kickstarter surfaced today that shows off a new way to play touchscreen games. The Ringbow is a ring you slide on your finger, with a large button that performs various functions in-game.
In a concept video, an example was presented where instead of simply touching a dragon to pop them - which is the kind of complexity we’ve seen in plenty of touchscreen minigames - you hold onto its tail, and then zap it by pressing your finger to the button.

UK retailer Game Retail has warned of additional store closures in the near future, while also suggesting that a number a new stores could be opened.
“We are currently in negotiations with all of our landlords over leases,” a Game Retail spokesperson explained. “In the vast majority of cases we are reaching satisfactory agreements.
“In a very few cases this may not be possible and a handful of stores may close. Conversely, where we have positive negotiations we may well have the opportunity to open new stores.”
Affected staff have been informed, and the retail group expects to maintain its current 333-store footprint once the closures and openings have been completed. Presumably, there will be opportunities for staff from closing stores to move to new ones.
The group is currently in a dispute with the landlord of Game's flagship store on London's Oxford Street over unpaid advance rent.
In addition to the store reshuffle, Game Retail also hinted at a scaling down of its support centres in-line with its smaller retail representation.
“We are proposing some changes to our support centre structure to reshape Game Retail for success in our evolving markets,” the spokesperson added.
“We are proposing a reshaping exercise where we will invest in areas such as community, digital, pre-owned, CRM and brand, and we will make this possible by removing costs in some other areas.”
Game Group entered administration in March, closing 277 stores at the cost of 2,100 jobs.

"If you think playing endless hours of Dungeons & Dragons will create a desire to get into the information technology, think again. A new study by CompTIA of teens and young adults shows that only 17% want to pursue a technology career despite the fact that 97% say they 'love' technology."This can't be any more surprising than that most concert-goers don't intend to be professional musicians, can it? 17% actually sounds like a pretty high figure to me. The article goes on to soften even that number, though: "[I]nterest levels jump when teens and young adults are presented with options for specific jobs. Nearly half of the respondents can see themselves potentially designing video games; 41 percent envision creating applications for mobile devices; 39 percent, designing web pages; and 34 percent, applying technology in fields such as healthcare or education."

A 20-year-old Brit has been formally charged for hacking into a number of sites in the US.
Ryan Cleary, from Essex, has been accused by US prosecutors of breaking into various websites, including the US X-Factor site – he could face a maximum of 25 years in jail if convicted.
He is also facing similar charges in the UK after allegedly hacking into the website of the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
He is also accused of conspiring to steal the confidential information of people who singed up for info about the US X-Factor show. This was the first hack to have been claimed by LulzSec, a group suspected to be linked with hacktivists Anonymous.

UK games trade body UKIE will launch a massive media campaign to promote the new PEGI age ratings system before it becomes enforceable in July.
As part of this, the organisation will be relaunching the AskAboutGames.com website, which will once again provide parents with information on video games, the industry and the PEGI ratings.
UKIE has enlisted family gaming expert Andy Robertson (known for Family Gamer TV and Geek Dad) to run the website.
"Working with UKIE on AskAboutGames.com and the Control.Collaborate.Create campaign is an excellent opportunity to broaden how video games are perceived," said Robertson.
"Through videos, blogs and reviews AskAboutGames will engage families of all shapes and sizes with information and tools to better understand and get more from the games they play."
Meanwhile the main campaign has been entitled Control.Collaborate.Create, and will run from July to December.
Control refers to educating parents about how they can check what games their children are playing, with the help of PEGI ratings when purchasing and the parental controls built-in to various consoles.
Collaborate will encourage parents to engage with and understand the games their children are playing, in the hopes of dispelling certain myths.
Create messages will promote video games as a creative and beneficial activity for people of all ages.
A video will be circulated to the national and parenting press and bloggers, raising awareness of what the industry does to promote responsible gaming.
Meanwhile, a competition will run to find the UK's "most collaborative and creative game-playing families", who will become Family Ambassadors for the campaign. This kicks off at Games Britannia Festival in July, and prizes include personalised games characters created by a top UK developer.
UKIE CEO Dr. Jo Twist said: "We know games are played by more and more people every day but there continue to be myths about them and it can be confusing for parents to know what games their children should be playing and how they should be playing them.
"That's why UKIE is creating the national Control.Collaborate.Create campaign and relaunching the AskAboutGames website, to promote tools like PEGI and to encourage people to have honest and open conversations about games, and how they can be enjoyed responsibly as part of our everyday entertainment experience."

June 13th, 2012, 01:50 Posted By: wraggster
The absence of new business models and platforms is the least of E3's worries - the press conferences were a brutal and troubling experience
Does E3 still matter? By now, you no doubt have your own view on the subject, and we here at GamesIndustry International have made no secret of our own, but this year's expo moved me in ways I didn't anticipate.
A week before the madness started, we published an article questioning the relevance of a show like E3 to an industry that seemingly changes with each passing month, expanding rapidly in every conceivable direction. This question is more relevant now than ever before, but unless you have a very short memory you'll know that this isn't the first time it has been asked.
Each year the same discussion begins, and each year it develops along very similar lines. And for all the compelling arguments that E3 is little more than a lumbering relic from a bygone era, the most convincing response is always the same: exposure. E3 is the one moment that those with no vested interest in the games industry give it more than a cursory glance, and this, we are told, really matters.
"This year, more than any other in memory, the act of watching the E3 press conferences was a truly discomfiting experience"
Exploring whether that notion holds any water would require a column of its own, but for the purposes of this argument I'm taking it at face value. E3 - and specifically the E3 press conferences - are the mask that the industry's biggest companies wish to present to the world, yet this year, more than any other in memory, the act of watching those presentations was a truly discomfiting experience: hour upon hour of elaborately choreographed mayhem and violence, interspersed with infrequent moments of quiet that only served to amplify the gleefully gruesome spectacle.
Goons were impaled by arrows, engulfed in flames, savaged by tigers, strangled, bludgeoned, shot and stabbed, mostly in the neck - E3 2012 was either the year of the bow or the year of the neck-stab, depending on who you ask. The stifling majority of demos were defined by or culminated in acts of loud and glorified violence, often accompanied by enough "****s" and "mother****ers" to make Quentin Tarantino blush.
I don't much mind that the Far Cry 3 demo opened on a pair of painted breasts, or that Crystal Dynamics believes that the ugly threat of rape is necessary for its new take on Lara Croft - as always, I'll put my faith in the creators, and allow the work to justify their decisions. But taken as a whole, the texture of this year's press conferences struck me as deeply unpleasant, and far removed from the endlessly diverse, creative and fascinating industry I write about every day.
We're so preoccupied with justifying E3 as the one moment that everyone's attention is on video games that we haven't stopped to consider what those people are actually seeing, and the thoughts that must wander through their minds as they turn away for another year. Violence has been a selling-point in games for as long as I can remember. I'm not so naive that I expect that to change, and I accept that others may see things differently, but I can't recall a time when it felt so dominant, so unapologetically central to how these companies see their audience and judge the value of their products.
"We're so preoccupied with justifying E3 for grabbing everyone's attention that we don't stop to consider what those people are actually seeing"
This was never more clear than during the climactic demonstration of The Last of Us at the Sony conference. Naughty Dog's next project is as beautifully rendered, richly atmospheric and skilfully performed as we can rightly expect from the creators of Nathan Drake and Uncharted. It is also stark and unflinching in its brutality; violence so immediate and forceful it left me breathless. But the crowd responded differently: they applauded as one assailant's windpipe was crushed between a wall and the protagonist's muscled forearm; they whooped and cheered as, moments later, his face was pulverised against the edge of a wooden desk.
The demo ended abruptly, as a human head was vaporised by a point-blank shotgun blast. The lights came up, the focus returned to Sony's Jack Tretton for his closing remarks, and in the brief moment before his unflappable professionalism kicked in, I swear I saw a look of utter confusion in his eyes. He clapped, he smiled, he said something along the lines of, 'How about that, huh?', but there was a glimmer of recognition that, in the world of AAA games in 2012, this is how you leave them wanting more.
What did Naughty Dog think of its game being used so hopelessly out of context, as the climax to so much amped-up, slo-mo destruction? I'd very much like to know. It seems clear to me that the intention behind The Last Of Us is not to whip crowds into a state of frenzy, but to create a sense of unease, a creeping disquiet at the unvarnished, punishing reality of a punch to the ribs or a lead pipe to the head.
Indeed, part of me hopes that it will prove to be Naughty Dog's final farewell to violence as a cornerstone of its work, so it can devote more of its time and attention to all that character, dialogue and storytelling stuff for which it so justly praised. But it's the same part of me that believes SimCity was the stand-out game of the show, and regards David Cage as a shining beacon upon the rocks; the same part of me that wished Watch Dogs' many impressive tricks were at the service of something more interesting than making a clean and efficient kill; the same part of me that hopes this grim parade of violence is not necessarily what we want, only what we are given.
A few years ago, the talented, thoughtful programmer and designer Chris Hecker gave a talk in which he warned of the very real danger that games will end up in the same "pop cultural ghetto" as comics books. As that medium developed, the comic publishers became so fixated on regurgitating the same profitable superhero characters they effectively destroyed their own credibility. Even a Pulitzer Prize winning exploration of the Holocaust couldn't remove the negative stigma entirely, and only now is that veil beginning to lift.
"E3 is supposed to be the best we have to offer, but it felt like the same familiar meal served over and over and over again"
The worth of any form of entertainment, Hecker said, can be judged on four metrics: revenue, units sold, cultural impact, and diversity of content. This year, E3 spoke of an industry with a laser focus on the first, an over-inflated sense of its own success in the second, and barely a passing thought for the others. I won't pretend that I like every movie at the cinema or all of the songs in the charts, but even at their worst the film and music industries have rubbish for every taste, and that is what allows them to endure.
But E3 is supposed to be the best we have to offer - there's no denying the skill and craft on display - but it felt like the same familiar meal served over and over and over again. The next generation of technology that so many of us wanted to see will give us higher fidelity explosions, more realistic bullet wounds, and better particle effects on exploding heads, but I suspect the problem runs deeper. I've seen what Unreal Engine 4 is capable of and it won't save us from a lack of ideas.
I am now in my Thirties. I cannot remember a day when there wasn't a computer or console waiting on the desk or under the television. I expected the friends I played with as a child, a teenager, and a young adult to retain their interest in gaming, but with only a few exceptions they all willingly left it behind. They aren't prudes or snobs or prigs; just people for whom snackable mobile games hold no interest, who demand more substance than a game of motion-controlled bowling can provide, and have no stomach for endlessly shooting the same five guys until the credits roll. They love the look of Bioshock, they love the ideas, they love the world, they want those production values, but do we really have to kill all of those bad guys?

People have so much more choice on mobile platforms and Facebook today', says Livingstone
Mid-tier console studios will cease to exist in future as triple-A games become bigger and consumers look to mobile and browser platforms, Ian Livingstone has said.
Speaking at Bafta’s question time, the Eidos life president said that with large developers constantly raising the bar with investment and pushing graphical boundaries, double-A studios will likely go away as they struggle to compete.
He also said that with a plethora of platforms such as mobile and browser, the huge amount of cheap apps would mean smaller console developers will not be able to compete to get their titles noticed.
“It’s certainly a case of the rich getting richer,” said Livingstone.
“The bar is being raised in every sequel that the mid-tier developers haven’t got a hope in hell of surviving. Everyone is buying the same games like Call of Duty and FIFA. The mid-tier is going to go away because people have so much more choice on mobile platforms and Facebook today.

Online e-book retailer Anobii, which has more than 600,000 global users, has been bought by Sainsbury’s for a mere £1.
Sainsbury’s bought HMV’s stake in Anobii, meaning the British supermarket will have a majority stake of 64 per cent in the e-book retailer.
“The investment in Anobii is a further step in Sainsbury's strategy to deliver digital services to support the growth of its online channel and commitment to multichannel retailing,” said Sainsbury’s in a statement.
The acquisition comes after the launch of Sainsbury's Entertainment in November 2010, the acquisition of online entertainment company Global Media Vault Ltd in October 2011 and the launch of its music download service earlier this year.
Anobii is a social e-books platform, which enables people to discover titles and purchase them to read on mobile and tablet devices.

The pan-European PEGI games ratings will be made legally enforceable in just a matter of weeks.
An update from trade body UKIE today says the ratings will become law on July 23rd.
There has been a number of delays around getting the self-regulation marks to become a legal requirement - abolishing the BBFC's remit over games - for sometime.
It was first recommended that the PEGI labels were made law five years ago.
But the UK Government started to process to legally endorse PEGI when parliament reconvened last month.
UKIE - previously known as ELSPA - and its members have been on a campaign to see the legal process through.
Not only that, they will also kick off a range of promotional efforts to raise awareness about the ratings to the public.
Making PEGI law would mean that retailers could face prosecution or a fine if selling 12, 16 and 18 rated games to those under those ages.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier maintained its UK all-formats chart domination for the third week in a row, even after a 48 per cent drop in sales compared to the prior week.
Max Payne 3 also clung on to its position, sticking at number two (though it, too, saw a significant drop in sales, falling 36 per cent).
Electronic Arts' FIFA 12, meanwhile, benefited from Euro 2012, fighting its way back up to number three after a 48 per cent boost in sales.
Battlefield 3 also made a return, reaching number four, perhaps bolstered by the launch of DICE's premium service for the game.
The only new entry this week was Game Of Thrones, which debuted at number six.

June 11th, 2012, 23:04 Posted By: wraggster
The UK government has today officially announced its intentions to replace Information and Communications Technology (ICT) with a "fresh approach to teaching technology in schools" from September 2014.
The announcement follows the completion of the government's consultation on the UKIE-led Next Gen Skills Computer Science coalition's proposal to reform ICT, based on recommendations from the Next Gen report.
"Overall, there was a broad consensus amongst respondents that the existing Programmes of Study and Attainment Targets for ICT were not fit for purpose," reads the Department for Education's consultation document. "Over half of respondents were in favour of disapplying the Programmes of Study and around half were in favour of disapplying the Attainment Targets and statutory assessment arrangements."
In the interim, schools will still be required to teach ICT, but from September 2012, teachers will be able to introduce greater computer science content and tailor courses to suit their pupils' needs.
"We welcome today’s announcement from government as it broadly follows the approach outlined in our response to the ICT consultation," says Next Gen report co-author and Next Gen Skills coalition chair Ian Livingstone. "We welcome the disapplication of ICT in its current form and the opportunity that this gives schools to teach children rigorous computer science.
“Creating an education system where Computer Science is taught is fundamental for our economy and future competitiveness. We believe that the Government should set out a vision for Computer Science so that every child learns the concepts and principles of Information Technology and Computer Science from primary school age onwards, and later to specialise in Computer Science if they wish.
Michael Gove announced the government's plans to wind down ICTin January this year.
“Since January all the major awarding bodies have now announced their intention to offer a GCSE in Computer Science, thereby removing a massive roadblock to the introduction of Computer Science in schools," Livingstone continues.
"Ultimately Computer Science should be an option on the English Baccalaureate, to ensure that it is seen by teachers and parents as a high status ‘fourth science.’ Next Gen Skills is currently working with professional bodies to ensure that new qualifications are sufficiently challenging and engaging enough for pupils, schools and industry.”

During E3, we met with Atlus to check out Persona 4 Arena, among other things, and upon sitting down at the small table in our private presentation room we were surprised to find a P4A arcade stick waiting for us. Immediately, our hearts were all a-flutter with the prospect of a nice limited edition arcade stick.
"There is an official HORI stick in Japan," Aram Jabbari told us, "but this is a Mad Catz that we've customized. There is no official North American stick at this time," and as quickly as they had arisen, our hopes were quickly dashed. Jabbari, who is Atlus' Manager of PR and Sales, said we could post about the stick so long as we promised not to insinuate that it was a real product, or that it was ever going to be released. So! Expect to see it on store shelves before the end of the month.

It's unfair to judge the games businesses that effectively run E3 based on the presentation for its products.
But you can collectively judge the products themselves. And the broad theme across those pushed to the front was loud and clear.
Grunts, gunfire, and girl characters often getting short thrift; these games get pulses racing, adrenaline surging. It’s stuff for core gamers.
‘Core’ these days means the committed spender. And although E3 is a big, expensive trade show, it was these reliable players that the event went all out to please. This show was designed not for the waves of media or the retailers who went – it was for gamers watching via streams on console or PCs, ready to pre-order.
The message comes at the expense of some of the good work this industry has done to make its content more diverse. Games popular with families and the casual female audience took a backseat. Those areas of the market haven’t gone away, but format-holders and big publishers don’t want to talk about them as much.
As a result, talk of any company strategy was next to non-existant.
Just two or three years ago an Xbox, Sony or Nintendo press conference began by reminding you of market share gains and demographic cut through, with swishy CG graphs and charts. This is, after all, supposed to be a business event. Now the budget is spent on a funny Miyamoto intro. Or paying Usher to sing for his supper.
Yes, a market slump means there may be little to boast about. But a market slump means people want some solutions. The console companies kept their fans well-fed this week, but they underestimated how starved the industry is for some direction.
NO NEXT-GEN, BUT PLENTY OF GAMES FOR IT
Retailers and third-parties alike told me they were disappointed there was no talk of an Xbox successor or a new PlayStation alongside Nintendo’s bold vision for Wii U at E3.
But behind closed doors you could find plenty of technology and content for such machines, whether they exist or not.
Square Enix’s Final Fantasy real-time demo, Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs from Ubisoft and Unreal Engine 4 all showed a desire by developers to make the Next Big Thing.
Kudos to them for pushing forward and filling the void here at a time when Microsoft and Sony are happy to wait – and may have handed an early victory to Nintendo.

Perhaps E3 2012 will be remembered as the year that even Nintendo acknowledged the existence of smartphone gaming -- if only begrudgingly so, dragged kicking and screaming into the early '10s. It's a brave new world here, a strange one in which everyone and their grandmother has become a gamer by default, carrying high powered portable computers in their pockets at all times. But even as all the major players took time out to give a nod to the ever enlarging juggernaut that is mobile gaming, its an element that still feels like a bit of a redheaded stepchild inside the Los Angeles Convention Center, where console gaming is still far and away the dominant force -- it's a presence relegated to brief mentions in larger press events and pushed to the sides of the convention floor.
It comes as no surprise, of course, that Nintendo didn't dwell on the matter during its show opening keynote on Tuesday. The mere fact that company president Satoru Iwata made reference at all to mobile operating systems is something of a sea change for an executive who has thus far stubbornly refused to even "consider" developing for the Androids and iOSes of the world. And the news from Sunday doesn't do much to shake that stance. While mobile operating systems were name checked, it was only in reference to users' ability to access social information from the Wii U on their browser.

If you're serious about your sound when it comes to gaming, chances are you've at least heard of Astro Gaming. Back in 2008, the company introduced its pro gaming-focused headset solution, the A40 audio system, and since then it's been actively adding to its lineup with lifestyle headsets like the A30, and various improved refreshes of the A40 itself. In the lead-up to E3, the company announced the $300A50 wireless audio system, marking its second major push away from the competitive gaming scene and into the living room. If you'll recall, Astro first dabbled in specifically bringing its tournament headset chops to the living room last year with its first wireless solution, the MixAmp 5.8.
Although we were pleased with the 5.8's performance and versatility -- namely that it worked with any 3.5mm-equipped headsets across the Xbox, PS3 and PC like the wired MixAmp Pro -- we worried some users would be put-off with having to deal with the three-piece setup. Basically, you had a wired headset that plugging into a belt pack, which wirelessly connected to a transmitter base. It appears that Astro took note as well, opting to get rid of the belt pack and cram its controls and radios inside of an A40, along with some other tweaks, including KleerNet lossless audio, to create the A50 -- something we'd been hoping to see for a very long while. We spent some time with Astro's Marketing Director, Aaron Drayer, to talk about the headset and try it for ourselves, and you'll find it all detailed just past the break.

If you're a mobile / tablet gaming enthusiast, you may get tired of swiping your fingers across the Retina display or using the on-screen controls. Snakebyte is looking to lend a hand with its upcoming game controller for Android slates and the iPad, so we went hands-on here at E3. The accessory plays nice with tablet PCs running Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich and Apple's portable device outfitted with any iCade-compatible apps. Dressed in a soft-touch coating, the peripheral feels great in the hand and the base is much like a PS3 controller. The unit connects via Bluetooth and pairing it with your mobile gaming device of choice is a breeze. When performing said set-up, you can select from five different modes to suit your needs including gamepad / controller, keyboard and mouse, solo keyboard, solo mouse and iCade mode (iOS-only). You'll always know which setting you've chosen thanks to an LED indicator on the front side of the kit. Touting eight hours of battery life, the gaming accessory charges via USB and will include a simple stand for your slate. Interested? You'll be able to snag one for $40 at the end of July. For now, though, take a peek at the gallery below for a closer look.

Electronic Arts says that it's looking to make several new IP for the next generation of consoles. EA Labels president Frank Gibeau says this will happen despite the preponderance of sequels at this year's E3.
"The introduction of new hardware from the big three is going to allow us to reembark on a bunch of new IPs, because it's the better time to do it, because you can really explore new ideas and do different things," Gibeau told CVG.
"In a market this massive, launching new IPs is very risky and it's a big investment to make these games. So it's a natural thing to see in this point in the cycle a little bit more emphasis on the knowns, but in the new cycle you're going to see a lot of new IP from Electronic Arts," he added. "If you're running a studio organization, the moment you stop creating new IP , your creative organization dies. Because you have to constantly innovate and try new ideas and people within the organization want to do new things."
"I can tell you right now there's between three and five new IPs that we're working on that we're thinking about for the next-gen. Some of them might come to market, some of them might not," detailed Gibeau. "It's really one of those things where I'm consciously looking at introducing new IPs into the portfolio over the next several years as the new hardware comes into the marketplace that we can refresh."
Gibeau said that if they were to release new IP right now "it would be very difficult to get the mindshare of gamers. You might get really good press for introducing a new IP, but to sell a couple of million units to break even on it at this point in the cycle... discretion's the better part of valor, to hold it a little bit so you get a whole new market refresh."
