Researcher comScore claims mobile gaming is on the rise as 42 per cent of smartphone owners – or 46 million –in the EU5 – the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain – used the platform in February, a rise of 55 per cent year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the UK has the highest penetration of EU5 mobile gamers with over half of all Brit smartphone owners playing a game on their device.
Hesham Al-Jehani, mobile product manager, comScore Europe, said: "The rise in mobile gaming is being propelled by the rapid adoption of smartphones and the vast ecosystems of game apps they provide.
"As mobile games evolve from simple pre-loaded games to highly challenging and visually appealing games, their entertainment value has increased substantially. But another important – and perhaps less often reported – driver of mobile gaming is that many can be played without accessing the internet on people’s phones.
"This means that gaming is an easy way to fill idle time on the underground or in other locations where internet access is spotty.”

Chart-Track director Dorian Bloch reveals the Top Ten games on single platforms, in terms of both unit sales and revenue, and takes a look at how controller sales have altered since 2007...
Basic analysis on Chart-Track’s CUBE online data warehouse solution could start with a simple list of best-sellers, either all-time, by year or any custom financial reporting period.
You could pick certain titles, genres, age ratings, developers, or any combination of factors. For example, in terms of all-time All Formats, Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 are the current Top Two for both units and revenue. But leaving aside the multi-format juggernauts, the individual SKU best-sellers (in terms of units) shown here have been dominated by Dr Kawashima on DS for three years (162 weeks), which fell to No.2 in January, to be replaced by Mario Kart Wii.
The Top Four unit best-sellers are all Nintendo titles, but you may be surprised to learn that No.5 is a title from 2004, GTA:?San Andreas on PS2. In terms of money generated, Wii Fit is No.1, even without the revenues from its Balance Board accessory. PS2’s San Andreas is No.3 by revenue, followed by three Call of Duty titles on Xbox 360. At the time of analysis, Modern Warfare 3 on 360 is close to overtaking Modern Warfare 2 on 360. Black Ops overtook MW2 in just 11 weeks on 360 – a stunning achievement. But it’s worth noting that Black Ops was much more of a step-change in sell-though over MW2 than MW3 is over Black Ops.

Restricting sales of second-hand games 'would be awesome from a business perspective'
A lead developer at Crytek has publicly supported the concept of console manufacturers blocking access to second-hand games.
Rasmus Højengaard, the Swedish director of creative development at Crytek, said “from a business perspective that would be absolutely awesome” if a next-generation Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony console restricted access to games bought pre-owned.
“It's weird that [second-hand sales] are still allowed because it doesn't work like that in any other software industries, so it would be great if they could somehow fix that issue as well,” Højengaard (pictured) told CVG.
Amid a craze of speculation regarding PlayStation 4 (codenamed Orbis) and Xbox 720 (codenamed Durango), it has been rumoured that Sony and Microsoft are both considering technologies that will reject pre-owed discs.
Neither Microsoft nor Sony has confirmed any details regarding their next generation systems.

The PlayStation Vita may not have the electric longevity to replace your portable music player, but Nyko figures there's no good reason it can't take up the role of rocking your bedroom. The accessory outfit's stereo speaker charging dock for the Sony's fledgling handheld hasn't changed much since we saw it at CES, save for the fact that it's available now. $30 turns your Vita into the most overpowered alarm clock (assuming you download the upcoming app from the PSN store) your nightstand has ever seen. What of the PS Vita Power Grip? A Nyko representative tell us it's on the way, but doesn't have anything to announce at this time. Read on for the charging dock's official press release.

A misleading hatchet job in the tabloid press shouldn't distract us from genuine risks to children who play online, says Johnny Minkley
"Xbox paedophile predators 'move in on prey within two minutes of contact'", screamed the Metro last Wednesday, the story making the front page of its dead-tree edition.
The morning commuter-bothering freesheet has form here, as the games industry well knows. A stable mate of the Daily Mail, it is after all the same publication that brought us the shocking news: "Video gaming lead to surge in rickets". Which proved as fair a reflection of the facts as one might have expected.
Signaling its intent to treat the latest games-related research it had no intention of reading properly with its customary bulletproof standards of accuracy, the paper illustrated the piece with an image of an original Xbox.
Gamers and the games press reacted to it not with self-righteous anger, but wearied resignation. Conditioned as the industry is to hysterical tabloid scapegoating, our Pavlovian response is to sigh then sneer.
But even if we feel we have good reason to resist taking the Metro's account at face value, given the seriousness of the issue it shouldn't be allowed to distract from an examination of the source.
The European Online Grooming Project Report was produced by a team of researchers at London's Kingston University. It seems the Metro based its piece solely on the press release that accompanied last week's publication - which features the word "paedophile" in the headline and "Xbox" and "PlayStation" in the body - jackpot, in other words, for hacks desperately scanning the wires for something to cut and paste.
In the release, one of the authors of the report, Professor Julia Davidson, explained that predatory online chat can "become sexualised within two minutes". The release added that "the report highlights how gaming platforms, such as Xbox Live and PlayStation Network are also used to target children, particularly boys."
Kingston Uni's press office told me last week that the Metro's "headline was very misleading", but added: "The report focuses on all online gaming, not just Xbox Live, as well as social networking."
Indeed, the authors of the research revealed that they found evidence of online gaming services being used for grooming. Here's the key relevant findings taken from the full 152-page document:
"Online game platforms were used by some men that were attempting to groom young boys. Grooming via game platforms helped to reinforce the fantasy aspect of offending behaviour and gave the men credibility in the eyes of the young men being approached."
"In some respect, this approach represents a 'rational choice' for men sexually interested in boys, as the evidence suggests that young men tend to be online playing games more than young females."
"There are two dimensions of online gaming that made this method an attractive place to target young people. The first was that playing a game, such as online role- play, helped to reinforce the fantasy, or 'unreal' aspect of what is clearly offending behavior."
"The second dimension relates to online gaming performance reinforcing the credibility of the offender as somebody worth talking to. That is, being competent at online games and 'leveling up' by gaining experience points means a great deal to some online players. Consequently, some offenders talked about how they could use their considerable online scores as a way to 'attract' and open up conversations with some young boys."
Horrible stuff. And while none of us is likely to be surprised that gaming - as with any other connected service - is being exploited by sexual predators, these details stand out: that would-be groomers are somehow able to delude themselves into believing what they're doing is harmless because of the "fantasy" aspect of gaming; and that having good game stats facilitates contact.
Grooming via game platforms helped to reinforce the fantasy aspect of offending behaviour and gave the men credibility in the eyes of the young men being approached
The European Online Grooming Project Report
The games industry has been ahead of the tech curve in taking measures to protect children. All modern gaming systems feature parental controls as standard - sensible, well-designed means with which to prevent kids from accessing content inappropriate for their age and from engaging in online contact.
And there's good practical advice and information out there, from organisations including the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, The UK Council For Child Internet Safety (formed in the wake of the Byron Review), and UKIE - if you know where to look for it.
But, as I wrote here recently in relation to age ratings, the real problem remains that too many parents either don't know parental controls are there or don't bother to use them, and see video games as inherently harmless virtual babysitters.
It's all too easy to be knee-jerk dismissive of the sensationalist anti-gaming agenda that persists in the tabloid press, which usually has little interest in the facts of the story itself beyond a trolling headline. But that doesn't mean there's no story.
Rapidly evolving technologies, playgrounds full of smartphones and a preponderance of confusing social networks give parents plenty to worry about. Meanwhile, the sheer number of children allowed to play 18-rated games highlights how interactive entertainment is viewed and treated differently to other media.
And so the disturbing details of Kingston University's research send out a strong signal to the UK games industry as it prepares its awareness campaign to support the legal switch to PEGI, now due this summer: it must also be used to raise awareness of the potential risks of online gaming. That's the responsibility not just of the games industry, but also bodies such as UKCCIS. The advice needs to be clear, the message visible.
Because if mature-rated content alone isn't enough reason for parents to pay closer attention to what their kids are doing on games consoles, this snapshot of an interview with a paedophile, quoted in Kingston's research, ought to give pause:

The games sector will 'live or die based on whether it can find new ways to make users happy', says Newell
Bad games are one of the biggest problems facing the industry as they can deter customers away from future purchases, Valve’s co-founder Gabe Newell has claimed.Newell said that potential users would likely turn away from the sector altogether, and not just away from a single publisher’s releases, if they had bad experiences with poorly designed games.
“The real question is, are people going to spend time playing games or browse the internet or watch movies?” he said in a podcast interview with Seven Day Cooldown.“We’re really still at the phase where there are so many more people who aren’t playing games than those who are. The reality is, anyone who plays a great game and has a great time is more likely to buy another game. Our biggest issue is that shitty games are much worse for us as an industry overall. “It’s not like you go ‘oh good that customer has dollars in their pocket, they can spend them on my game’. It’s more like they just aren’t going to buy games in general, or go do something else with their time, [if they play a game they don’t enjoy].”

'The closer developers are to their users, the more the line blurs between both'
Fan feedback and customer interaction is the games industry’s great advantage over other entertainment fields, Valve’s managing director has said.
Gabe Newell stated that developers were in a unique position in being able to engage with users about their projects, with the ability to make changes in a matter of hours.
He explained that other sectors such as the film industry did not have the same opportunity to make customers happy, as once a movie had released, there was little that could be done to change it.
“What I think is best for the industry is that games developers used to be very far away from their customers,” said Newell in a podcast interview with Seven Day Cooldown.
“Nowadays you can have a game developer talking to a customer while they’re playing a game and fix an issue, or improve the experience, and do that in a matter of hours, if not minutes.

With JoyToKey it is possible to map keypresses and mouse movements to a gamepad.
Quote:
Version 5.1.0 includes the following improvements:
Mouse cursor emulation is now much smoother with analog sticks, by using a continuous acceleration without a threshold.
In case analog stick input has been wrong, axis mapping can be manually specified. (Menu: "Preferences" -> "Configure joysticks")
In case you have multiple joysticks and want to always use one of them as "Joystick 2" (or any other joystick number), you can define a priority/preferred number for each device. (Menu: "Preferences" -> "Configure joysticks")
Miscellaneous bug fixes.

ZX Spectrum, the microcomputer launched in 1982 by Sinclair Research (Cambridge, UK) turns 30 today. The launch of the machine is seen by many today as the inspiration for a generation of eager young programmers, software and game designers in the UK. The events surrounding its launch, notably Sinclair's well-known rivalry with Acorn, later helped to inspire the design of the ARM architecture and most recently the Raspberry PI (based on ARM), in an effort to reboot the idea of enthusiastic kid programmers first captured by the Spectrum and Acorn's BBC micro. Happy birthday Spec!

Springer Science and Business Media has discovered that during 2010, almost 70 per cent of the overall power draw of the world's consoles was thanks to idling. This total came to over 10.8 TWh of energy, equating to well over a billion dollars in wasted power. The biggest culprit for the trio of main consoles of this generation was the PlayStation 3, with its first edition having an active power draw of 180 watts and an idling draw of 167. As the report states, the Xbox 360 wasn't much better however, with active/idle draws of 172/162w respectively. Both of those consoles have got far better with their hardware revisions, more than halving the idle power consumption, but the Wii has been ahead of the curve the whole time. Its active/idle power draws were as low as 16/11w. The only real difference with the Nintendo console was whether its WC24 was enabled or not. With it on, standby power jumped from 2w to 9w."

Sim City 5 is just the forerunner of always online, multi-platform games
EA has decided to stick to its guns on the controversy over Sim City 5's always online requirement, announcing that all its franchises are to recieve simliar "online universes".
A company often accused of playing the safe bet at the expense of innovation, EA has opted to chance lost sales in order to bring players an unprecedented level of connectivity by taking all its franchises online.
This despite a Pew Internet report released last week revealing that 38 percent of Americans don't have high speed internet access.
Eurogamer reports that Keith Ramsdale, the head of EA's Northern Europe division made the announcement at the publisher's UK showcase.
Citing Fifa as an example, Ramsdale said this meant more than simple online play, but the ability to access a game brand across multiple devices, with each contributing to the same goal and profile.

Amazon is now shipping preorders for its Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G in both the UK and Germany, a week ahead of schedule. While eager e-reader... readers in the likes of <strike>France, Italy and Spain have to wait a little longer</strike>, Germans and Brits can expect their orders to arrive starting tomorrow, with stock also available in bricks-and-mortar options including John Lewis, Dixons, Argos, Carphone Warehouse, Currys, PC World and Tesco. Alas, there's still no news of a Eurozone arrival date for the Kindle Fire. We assume our European readers are still willing to wait, right?
Update: Amazon has contacted us stating that the devices have actually "started shipping to customers in France, Italy and Spain from the respective sites (Amazon.fr, .it and .es), as well as the UK and DE."

Activision will on Sunday hold what it is describing as a “live outdoor advertisement” for upcoming action title Prototype 2.
Taking place at “an iconic London location” at 9:00pm on Sunday 22nd April, the game will recreate a “gruesome and bloody confrontation” between the game’s stars.
The performance will last around five minutes and will be streamed on the game’s Facebook page. Furthermore, as the ad nears its conclusion viewers will be able to vote on which outcome they would like to see.
“Due to the nature of Prototype 2’s content, the game has been rated by the BBFC and PEGI as certificate 18,” Activision’s Minneapolis business unit EU general manager David Tyler said.
“This live action advertisement reflects the game in its hard-hitting, fantasy nature and whilst we’re excited to bring this new game to our legions of fans, it would be inappropriate for under 18s to view it” commented David Tyler.”

Chemicals, TV, sales and marketing to bear the brunt of global cut-backs
Sony will not bury the axe into its games division as the company prepares to slash some 10,000 jobs from its global entertainment empire, Develop understands.
Information of the company’s restructuring operation suggests that the television, marketing and chemicals business will bear the brunt of the cut-backs.
Sony declined to comment when approached by Develop.
Targeting a six per cent reduction of its workforce (about 10,000 employees), it is believed that Sony will remove about 5,000 workers through the sale of its chemicals and LCD business.
New CEO Kaz Hirai, who has a mandate to slash operating expenses by a third within twelve months, said that Sony’s focus will be on three divisions: Digital imaging, phones and games.
