If you'd rather that your non-game Oculus Rift experiences be nonfiction, it looks like that wish is coming your way rather soon. Next week, Zero Point hits Steam and it offers full 360 degree views of a Department of Defense military training camp, a beach scene and even the extremely crowded LA Convention Center during E3 2013. The rub of the video is that it's the first of its kind -- a documentary about virtual reality, filmed in VR and made for the platform. It's very meta. Each scene is explorable, with either head tracking, a game controller or a mouse running the action. It's apparently compatible with all past-and-future Oculus dev kits, and will cost $15 come its October 28th release. However, IGNnotes that if you purchase before November 4th it'll only run you $12. Want a preview before you buy? Of course you do; just head past the break for that.

Old cassette players were used to tape music, however, this player features a Raspberry Pi, which can play tunes from Spotify via tapes.
British developer and maker Matt Brailsford is responsible for designing the device, which combines a Raspberry Pi – a mini PC – Spotify and NFC tags.
The cassette features a Raspberry Pi, which runs a version of MusicBox that has all the Spotify streaming features built in.
Brailsford has also created a custom module, which reads the NFC tags that are stuck inside the cassettes to select the playlist to play.
When the player is turned on, MusicBox loads up the custom module, which then waits for Spotify to connect and loads a variety of spotify playlists into memory.
When a cassette is also inserted, the custom module reads the tag's ID and looks for a playlist associated with that ID.
The analogue buttons on the recorder, including volume, play, next and stop, also all work too.
Plus, each cassette is double sided, so users can have Side 1 and 2 playlists for each cassette.

Raspberry Pi founder [Eben Upton] recently sat in an uncomfortable chair in London to discuss all things Pi. Having sold about four million units over the last 2.5 years, he feels the future is bright for his original vision of inspiring and helping kids to learn programming.
[Eben] is quite pleased with the Pi-Top, a B+ based laptop kit that’s pulling in backers left and right while completely unaffiliated with the Pi foundation. The kit includes a 13.3″ HD LCD screen, keyboard, trackpad, and an injection molded case, though you can print your own with the included STL files. Kits start at $249 without a Pi and $285 with a B+ included. Robot and home automation HATs are also available separately or bundled with the Pi-Top kit.
The most exciting news is that the $600,000 spent on DSI connectors for those four million Raspis is about to pay off. [Eben] hopes that an official touchscreen will be available for purchase before the end of 2014 or in early 2015. He showed off a 7″ capacitive touch panel that will attach to a display board stacked on a Pi, effectively turning it into a tablet.
[Eben] said that they will not be making a Model C and instead are working on revision A+. He hopes to make an official announcement in the near future.
Finally, [Eben] discussed the importance of community, which played a large part in the birth and evolution of the Pi. He also spoke of Pi Academy, a sort of professional workshop for teachers in the UK who’ve recently been tasked with teaching computer science as demanded by changes in the mandatory UK school curriculum. He hopes that these 2-day seminars will help educators achieve the high expectations recently laid out for students to achieve by age ten.

EEDAR survey of consumers finds cost is still the biggest factor despite high level of interest in VR headsets
While there's no concrete launch date yet for a consumer product, Facebook's Oculus Rift and Sony's Morpheus are slowly but steadily heading towards the finish line. Most developers GamesIndustry.biz has spoken to about virtual reality headsets have been enormously excited about the opportunities, but how do consumers feel? In the first of a series of contributions to our Insights section, research firm EEDAR asked consumers about their awareness and excitement around VR and how much they are willing to spend.
Awareness of various VR devices at this point is quite high at 75 percent, but purchase intent of current PC and console gamers is very low - only 8 percent said they'll buy a VR headset in the next 12 months (assuming one's available). Part of the problem is that the majority of consumers still haven't had a chance to try out VR in any capacity. 17 percent have tried it and when they do, they're much more likely to want to buy.
EEDAR pointed out, "This need to personally experience VR stands in stark contrast to typical discovery methods within the gaming industry - where discovery is largely driven by word-of-mouth recommendations (only 22 percent said they would purchase a VR device based on a friend's recommendation)."
Consumers who have shown an interest in VR made it clear that they want fresh experiences, not simply the latest shooter converted into a VR-compatible game. The desire for made-for-VR games aligns well with Oculus' intent to provide a real sense of presence and immersion in its games. While new experiences are crucial to driving enjoyment, cost is still the most important factor impacting purchasing decisions, EEDAR found. Players are willing to invest in high-quality experiences, but are wary of the potential price tag (especially since, for most, adding VR would necessitate additional upgrades and peripherals).
On average, gamers indicated they would be willing to spend between $100-$200 on the headset itself, and up to $376 total (on the device, peripherals and necessary upgrades) to add VR capabilities to their gaming setups.
"Virtual Reality is a hot topic in the games industry right now, but consumers are still mostly undecided about whether they will purchase VR devices when they become commercially available. Most console and PC gamers are now aware of the VR devices, but only a small percentage have actually experienced the technology. It is a positive sign for VR that those that have tried the devices are still interested in purchase. The key for the industry will be making sure as many people as possible get a chance to try the device and that their experience is as high in quality as possible," commented Patrick Walker, EEDAR's Head of Insights and Analytics.

FIFA 15 again held off competition from a number of high profile new releases to retain the No.1 position on the UK all formats chart during the week ended October 18.
The game has now matched FIFA 13's feat of holding the top spot for four consecutive weeks since launching in late September.

A low-cost virtual reality headset that is compatible with a range of smartphones has been revealed by Archos.
The Archos VR Glasses will work with any smartphone with a screen of six-inches or less and a quad-core processor, and is apparently compatible with a range of over 100 VR titles available across iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
And it’ll cost just £24.99.
“Consuming digital content has gone through lots of revolutions lately,” CEO Loïc Poirier said. “Virtual Reality is another one that we help sharing with people by providing high quality yet attainable devices.”
The Archos VR joins what is an increasingly crowded market which at the one end has the entry-level Google Cardboard, followed by the mid-level Samsung Gear VR and then at the premium end the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus.

The fixation on Nintendo's hardware reaches new heights
Nintendo's New 3DS and New 3DS XL sold a combined total of more than 240,000 units in their first week on sale in Japan.
Along with the standard versions of the hardware - which sold a further 27,000 units - it meant that the 3DS occupied four of the top six places in the hardware chart. By contrast, the eight non-3DS gaming platforms on the chart sold a combined total of just over 33,000.
That was reflected in the software chart, where Capcom's Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate romped to the top spot with 1.4 million units sold. The nearest competitors were both 3DS games: Super Smash Bros. and Yokai Watch 2.
The new generation of consoles, so dominant in Europe and North America, scarcely troubled the software chart at all. FIFA 15 on PlayStation 4 sold a little over 16,000 units, just scraping into the top five. Driveclub, meanwhile, charted at number seven with 8,600 units.
Here's the software top ten, accompanied by lifetime sales:
- 1. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Capcom, 10/11/14) - 1,446,289 (New)
- 2. [3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo, 09/13/14) - 76,392 (1,557,829)
- 3. [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke (Level-5, 07/10/14) - 57,583 (2,712,909)
- 4. [PS3] Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix (Square Enix, 10/02/14) - 21,158 (106,093)
- 5. [PS4] FIFA 15 (EA, 10/09/14) - 16,719 (New)
- 6. [PS3] FIFA 15 (EA, 10/09/14) - 16,149 (New)
- 7. [PS4] Driveclub (SCE, 10/09/14) - 8,620 (New)
- 8. [PSV] Danganronpa: Another Episode (Spike Chunsoft, 09/25/14) - 7,184 (93,113)
- 9. [3DS] Nazotoki Battle Tore! Densetsu no Makyuu o Fukkatsu Saseyo! (Bandai Namco, 10/02/14) - 6,106 (102,905)
- 10. [PSV] The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki II (Falcom, 09/25/14) - 5,021 (102,905)
And the hardware chart, accompanied by the prior week's sales:
- 1. New 3DS LL - 164,756 (N/A)
- 2. New 3DS - 70,050 (N/A)
- 3. 3DS LL - 19,727 (16,130)
- 4. PlayStation 4 - 11,697 (7,350)
- 5. PlayStation Vita - 8,561 (13,510)
- 6. 3DS - 7,340 (6,360)
- 7. Wii U - 6,309 (7,805)

October 18th, 2014, 00:48 Posted By: wraggster
Bungie's latest topped the charts and hardware sales soared; Sony says September was biggest month in PS Store history
The NPD Group's report for September is in, and while overall software (including PC) declined 35 percent to $501.6 million, hardware sales climbed by 136 percent to $432.7 million, helping to bring the industry sales total to $1.1 billion for the month, or up two percent. Accessories increased 33 percent as well, coming to $189.5 million.
With the new hardware continuing to attract customers, it would appear that new purchasers of the PS4 or Xbox One flocked to Bungie's Destiny or sports titles from EA like Madden or FIFA. Shadow of Mordor also performed well, placing fifth on the top ten chart, while Nintendo continues to see global success with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. In a separate press release, Nintendo noted that Smash Bros. 3DS sold 705,000 units in September (135,000 of which were sold digitally through the Nintendo eShop); this led to over 140,000 units of the 3DS family of systems being sold (an increase of 55 percent over sales in August).
Destiny in particular was huge for Sony, as the company noted that PS4 has been the lead platform for the game in terms of units sold through October 4. Additionally, while NPD doesn't provide specific digital sales yet, Sony boasted that Destiny helped the PlayStation Store set a new record for the month. And the limited-edition Destiny PS4 bundle drove PS4 hardware sales to its biggest month in 2014 - Sony said PS4 hardware numbers "nearly tripled" those of August.
“September 2014 was a record-breaking month for PlayStation's digital business, thanks in large part to the success of Destiny,” said Eric Lempel, vice president of Sony Network Entertainment International. “Last month's PlayStation Store revenue increased nearly 90 percent compared with Sept. 2013. Working closely with Activision and Bungie, we wanted to make the launch of Destiny a special experience for PlayStation fans. We're thrilled to see this high engagement from PS4 and PS3 owners.”
NPD industry analyst Liam Callahan added, "The launch of Activision-published and Bungie-developed Destiny in September 2014 proved successful in a number of ways: year-to-date through September data it is the top-selling video game on a unit basis, making it the most successful launch of the year so far as well. But an even more prestigious feat was the fact that Destiny had the best launch month of all-time for any new IP in video game software.”
While software sales were down quite a bit compared to last September, Callahan remarked that it's not a truly fair comparison: "It is important to note that September 2013 was the best performing September on record for new physical video game software sales, driven by the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, therefore making for difficult comparisons for this September to last.”
Here's the NPD's top 10 chart for September:

You've probably heard of Google Glass owners who seemingly can't put the wearable down, but there's now at least one reported instance of genuinely addictive behavior. Doctors at Naval Medical Center San Diego claim that a 31-year-old Navy serviceman is the first person to be diagnosed with a Glass-related internet addiction disorder. The patient wore the head-mounted computer for up to 18 hours a day, and was so attached to it that he would instinctively reach for his right temple (to activate Glass) whenever you asked him a question, whether or not the device was there. He's getting better after having spent 35 days in on-site treatment, according to doctors; that reflexive movement doesn't come up so often, and the man is both less irritable and more focused.

Last night an apparently refreshed model of Google's Chromecast streaming dongle popped up in FCC filings (as pointed out by Zatz Not Funny), just like the original did in March last year, but don't get too excited. Unfortunately, the documents don't show any real difference that we could find, and missing features like support for 5GHz WiFi will still be absent whenever the H2G2-2A hits the streets. Need more confirmation? Six members of the Chromecast team took part in a coincidentally-timed AMA on Reddit this afternoon, and according to Google Jacky Hayward "we don't have any new user-facing features planned for this device." Whatever changes there are in the new model "it will have the same features as the original and most users won't notice a difference."

 Jeri Ellsworth is moving.
Though she was born in Georgia, the former Valve engineer and all-around hardware guru was raised in Oregon and has always called the Pacific Northwest her home. Even during the seven or so years when she would travel regularly to Silicon Valley as a computer chip consultant, her base of operations never deviated. Now, however, it will. Technical Illusions, the company that she founded with fellow former Valve co-worker Rick Johnson to create a projected augmented reality system called castAR, is uprooting from Seattle and moving to Mountain View, California. And she -- along with the rest of the company's 10 or so employees -- is following suit.

Eben Upton's reboot of the spirit of the BBC Micro in the form of the Raspberry Pi would have been an interesting project even if it had only been useful in the world of education. Upton wanted, after all, to give the kind of hands-on, low-level interaction with computing devices that he saw had gone missing in schools. Plenty of rPis are now in that educational, inspirational role, but it turns out that the world was waiting (or at least ready) for a readily usable, cheap, all-in-one computer, and the Raspberry Pi arrived near the front of a wave that now includes many other options. Sales boomed, and we've mentioned a few of the interesting milestones, like the millionth unit made in the UK and the two-millionth unit overall. Now, according to TechCrunch the Raspberry Pi is getting close to 4 million units sold

Alien, Drive Club, Skylanders and NBA 2K15 all breach charts
Four new entries in the UK's top ten retail sales chart have failed to topple EA's FIFA 15 from a third week at number one, despite the football sim shedding another 60 per cent of sales this week.
The highest new entry was SEGA's Alien: Isolation, coming in at second. Shadows of Mordor holds on to third below that, whilst Forza Horizon 2 staves off a challenge from Drive Club to keep fourth just ahead of its rival's fifth. In sixth, Destiny precedes two more new entries in the shape of Skylanders Trap Team and NBA 2K15.
Super Smash Bros. and the PlayStation edition of Minecraft close out the top ten.

Virtual Reality isn't quite here yet, but it's starting to look like consumers will have plenty of options when it arrives: Gear VR caters to Samsung smartphone users, the consumer Oculus Rift is currently under development and Google has even fashioned a bottom-dollar solution that's compatible with almost any smartphone. That said, cardboard is a bit flimsy -- maybe you'd like something fancier, but not locked into Samsung's product line? Take a look at Carl Zeiss' VR One: a $99 smartphone VR headset for the rest of us.

[alexandros] works for resin.io, a website which plans to allow users to update firmware on embedded devices with a simple git push command. The first target devices will be Raspberry Pis running node.js applications. How does one perform alpha testing while standing up such a service? Apparently by building a monster tower of 120 Raspberry Pi computers with Adafruit 2.8″ PiTFT displays. We’ve seen some big Raspberry Pi clustersbefore, but this one may take the cake.

The tower is made up of 5 hinged sections of plywood. Each section contains 24 Pis, two Ethernet switches and two USB hubs. The 5 sections can be run on separate networks, or as a single 120 node monster cluster. When the sections are closed in, they form a pentagon-shaped tower that reminds us of the classic Cray-1 supercomputer.
Rasberry Pi machines are low power, at least when compared to a desktop PC. A standard Raspi consumes less than 2 watts, though we’re sure the Adafruit screen adds to the consumption. Even with the screens, a single 750 watt ATX supply powers the entire system.
[alexandros] and the resin.io team still have a lot of testing to do, but they’re looking for ideas on what to do with their cluster once they’re done pushing firmware to it. Interested? Check out their Reddit thread!

3DS title is still Japan's number one
It's Mickey Mouse versus Mario in the race for the top of the Japanese charts and it's Nintendo's Super Smash Bros for 3DS that holds fast at number one. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix enters at two, 20,700 units behind Super Smash Bros.
Super Smash Bros has now sold close to 1.5 million units, while at three Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke has now surpassed 2.6 million units sold.
- [3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - 105,619 (Lifetime - 1,481,433)
- [PS3] Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix - 84,935 (New entry)
- [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke - 62,887 (2,655,326)
- [3DS] Forbidden Magna - 23,250 (New entry)

Like comic books? Then you're probably familiar with the style of Bruce Timm, the father of the DC animated universe -- a specific era (and style) of DC Comics animation projects that started with the 1992 Batman: The Animated Series. If you missed it, it was a fantastic series: Batman had an incredible voice, Robin didn't deal in cheesy catch phrases and Mark Hamill was the Joker. Seriously. Now, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment is bringing Timm's vision of Batman back as an interactive holographic video designed for virtual reality displays: they're building an animated Batcave for the Oculus Rift.

Nearly every tech company wants in on the wearables game, but they can't all be Google Glass or Apple Watches -- not that they have to be. But hey, here's Toshiba -- and it's got a Toshiba Glass prototype to show off. We'll say this right at the start: this remains a reference product that the company's showing off at CEATEC in Japan this week. And yes, technical specifics (let alone a price) aren't being discussed yet, but the vision for Toshiba's eye-based wearable prototype is a gentle, predictable one. The hardware is the combination of a tiny projector, attached to admittedly normal-looking frames. However, there's actually a special kind of one-sided reflective glass to catch the projection. The projection module itself is kind of bulky, but actually lightweight... which is great, until you realize that this prototype requires a constant wired connection to work.
