Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 both entered the Japanese charts this week and secured three of the top five spots between them.
Japanese gamers favoured PlayStation 3 versions of both franchises, with Advanced Warfare securing the top spot and PES 2015 coming in second.
- [PS3] Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare - 79,586 (New entry)

- [3DS] One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X - 35,098 (New entry)
In hardware the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 saw significant boosts in unit numbers, no doubt tied to this week's new releases. Sony still had to settle for second and third behind the New 3DS XL, which is still the top selling hardware this week.

Blake Jorgensen points to Christmas price cut as a big opportunity for Microsoft
[h=3]EA[/h]
EA CFO Blake Jorgensen believes the gap between the sales of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One is rapidly closing.
Speaking at the UBS Global Technology Conference, Jorgensen pointed to Microsoft's seasonal $50 price reduction as a critical next-step in levelling the field - a process that Jorgensen indicated is already underway.
"Clearly, Sony has jumped out to a lead with a great console and I think a great pricing strategy," he said. "But Microsoft is catching up quickly. And pricing actions that are taking place, particularly within this Christmas season, driven by Microsoft around reductions plus a lot of bundled software, I think will continue to help pull the consumer into the new consoles."
Crucially, that $50 price reduction makes the Xbox One cheaper than the PlayStation 4 for the first time since both consoles launched a year ago. Earlier this month, Microsoft reported that Xbox One sales had tripled in the aftermath, with 10 million consoles sold-in to retailers. Last week, Sony confirmed that it has sold-in 13.5 million units.
In terms of games, Xbox One would seem to have the edge heading into the holiday season. Titanfall may be available on PC, but Xbox One and Xbox 360 are the only consoles where Respawn's excellent debut is available. Since then, Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive and Halo: The Master Chief Collection have also received high praise from critics.
By contrast, Sony's major exclusives haven't fared quite so well, with critics largely divided by or lukewarm on Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Infamous: Second Son and, most recently, Driveclub. LittleBigPlanet 3 is Sony's most prominent remaining exclusive this year, though the series has never sold in the same quantities as tentpole franchises like Uncharted, Gran Turismo and God of War.
Sony will seek to remedy that in Q1 2015, with Ready At Dawn's The Order: 1886 and From Software's Bloodborne both scheduled for release. For now, though, Microsoft has a major opportunity to seize in terms of both price and product.

You've probably had a moment or two where you wanted to live vicariously through a friend, but artist Mark Farid wants to take that concept to its logical extreme. He's planning an art installation, Seeing-I, where he'll experience another man's life through a virtual reality headset for 28 days straight. This other person won't be connected in real time (everything will be recorded six days in advance), but he'll have to share everything he records through a clandestine camera, no matter how private the situation might be. Mark's only direct contact with humans will be an hour with his psychologist each day, and his schedule is chained to that of his "input;" he'll eat, sleep and take bathroom breaks when this distant subject does. Ideally, the project will answer whether or not you lose some of your own identity by taking on someone else's for a long time.

The easiest way to connect a GSM module to a Raspberry Pi would be to buy a breakout module, install some software, and connect to a mobile network with a Pi. Need GPS, too? That’s a whole other module, with different software. The guys behind RasPiCommPlus are working on a better solution – a breakout board for breakout boards that takes care of plugging a ton of modules into a Pi and sorts out the kernel drivers to make interfacing with these modules easy.
Right now, the team has a GPS and GSM module, digital in and out modules, an …Read more

But CoD retains top spot as Halo, Batman, WoW, PES and 2 AC games debut
Six new entries in the UK retail top ten couldn't displace Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare from its number one spot this week, with the combined powers of Masterchief, Batman, PES and two Assassin's Creed titles unable to shift Activision's shooter.
AC: Unity was the highest challenger in second, followed by Halo: The Masterchief Collection in third and FIFA 15, the second highest-ranking survivor from last week's top ten, coming in fourth. LEGO Batman 3 took fifth, followed by PS3 and Xbox 360 exclusive Assassin's Creed Rogue in sixth. Minecraft PlayStation sits just below that, propped up by PES 2015 and the Warlords of Draenor expansion for World of Warcraft, coming in just above Destiny's tenth place.
All charts are courtesy of Ukie, as compiled by GfK Chart-Track. Sales data relates to physical sales, not digital.

Rockstar game hangs out with James McAvoy and David Tennant
The British Academy Scotland Awards took place this weekend and it was Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V that took home the golden mask.
The game beat Outplay Entertainment's Monster Legacy and Firebrand Games' Solar Flux HD to claim the honour.
"The British Academy Scotland Awards are a reflection of the massive depth of Scottish talent in film, television, animation and the gaming industry," said Director of BAFTA Scotland Jude MacLaverty.
"The breadth of content on display here tonight is truly inspiring and we offer our warmest congratulations to all of our worthy winners."

In a world where 52 percent of gamers are female, it seems odd that women get such arough treatment in so many games. That's what prompted Dataspelsbranchen, Sweden's game industry trade group, to ponder adding a sexism rating next to age and content ratings on newly-released titles. According to The Local, the organization has received a grant from the country's government to work out the idea. So far, the plan is to take an approach similar to the Bechdel Test to examine if women are given fair treatment in video games, but also to look at how publishers deal with the issue of gender equality given that Sweden's game industry only employs a female workforce of 16 percent. If you were wondering, there's no word on if the ratings would apply to all games or just those made in Sweden, but given that the country is the home of Minecraft, Just Cause, Hotline Miami, the Battlefield series and Goat Simulator, you can be sure that it'll be pretty visible.

The Samsung Gear VR, a mobile virtual reality headset powered by Oculustechnology and a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, will be available in North America starting this December at a pricepoint of $200, Oculus has revealed. The first-run "Innovator Editon" can also be bundled with a Bluetooth gamepad for an additional $50, and you can pre-register for more news updates directly through Samsung.
If you lean more toward being a virtual reality developer rather than a virtual reality consumer, there's still good news to be had, as Oculus has released their mobile software development kit (SDK) for you to tinker and play with. The current SDK is geared (no pun intended) specifically for the Gear VR and the Note 4, and includes the full source code for Oculus Cinema, Oculus 360 Photos and Oculus 360 Video.
Unfortunately, there's still no official release date for the PC version of Oculus' VR headset, the Rift. However, reports suggest a mid-2015 window for the consumer beta.

Xbox One and PS4 sales add up to a great first year
The NPD results for October are in and marked a successful first year of sales for the Xbox One and PS4.
"October 2014 marks the first 12 months of sales for the Xbox One and PS4; and after the first year, these consoles have had a great start as cumulative sales are currently over 70 percent higher than the combined first year totals of Xbox 360 and PS3," said The NPD Group's Liam Callahan.
"Hardware sales of eighth generation consoles represent close to 80 percent of dollar sales this month driving overall consoles sales to increase by 186 percent over October 2013."
When it came to games NBA 2K15 took the chart top spot. The Evil Within was the highest-selling first month of sales for new survival horror IP, while Sunset Overdrive was the ninth-highest seller when sorted by SKU, rather than by title.
“Declines in software this month were driven by further declines of seventh generation software, which were not fully offset by gains in eighth generation consoles. New launch performance was also soft as games that launched this month sold 42 percent fewer units than the games that launched in October 2013. Despite, however, the declines in sales this month of seventh generation software, research from our quarterly Games Market Dynamics: U.S. showed that usage of seventh generation consoles across Q3'14 is still larger than that of eighth generation consoles.”
In accessories (gamepads, headsets/headphones, and video game point and subscription cards) sales were up 22 percent year-on-year thanks to the new consoles. Point and subscription card sales alone were up 24 per cent to achieve the best October on record for that category.
"Overall sales across hardware, new physical software, and accessories were essentially flat in October 2014 compared to October 2013. Hardware and accessory growth, at 59 percent and 22 percent, respectively, was enough to offset the decline in new physical software of 28 percent."

Doug Creutz says shift away from physical purchases is hurting NPD totals, retailers' market share
Yesterday, the NPD Group reported October's US game software sales were down 27 percent year-over-year. Today, as reported by VentureBeat, analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen and Company told investors that's bad news, but not necessarily for the people who make games.
"[Sales were down] driven by tough comps and the drag from a significant percentage of next-gen software units being sold digitally," Creutz said, adding, "This is not so much a problem for the publishers as it is for brick-and-mortar retail."
With the NPD tracking only US retail game sales, Creutz said it is missing out on the increasing amount of sales that happen directly from platform-holders' storefronts.
"Given the strong shift toward new-gen games that is apparent from recent data, and the fact that digital currently appears to be taking as much as 25 percent share of total new-gen sales depending on the game, we continue to expect total Q4 physical unit sales to be down double-digits year-over-year," Creutz said.
The NPD Group has been attempting to incorporate digital sales into its reporting for years. In February, it confirmed it had a group of publishers participating in a pilot program where they exchange such information, but as yet has not made that information available to the public.

When Oculus VR hired away legendary programmer John Carmack from id Software, there was a specific intention: Carmack's commitment to virtual reality, specifically as it pertained to mobile VR. The first major fruit of Carmack's work over the past year is now available for you to download, as Oculus VR today announced the release of its mobile software development kit. So, what can you do with it? You can make stuff for Samsung and Oculus VR's joint venture: Gear VR. Specifically, the SDK is meant for use with the Note 4, which powers virtual experiences in Gear VR.

Moments after Samsung announced that you could get a Gear VR as early as next month, Oculus released an all-important detail: its price. Oculus and Samsung are selling two versions of its Gear VR Innovator Edition -- the headset alone is $199, but if you want the Bluetooth gamepad as well, you'll have to pony up $249 for the bundle. It's worth noting that this particular Gear VR is designed for the Galaxy Note 4, which you will have to supply yourself in order to get that whole virtual reality experience. Seeing as a Note 4 will likely cost you around $300 on contract and upwards of $800 without, the total Gear VR experience is looking to be quite expensive -- starting at around $500 and almost $1,000 if you decide to go off-contract. That's considerably more than the $350 Oculus Rift DK2, though bear in mind that Oculus has yet to announce the consumer retail price of its Rift headset.

We love re-purposed consumer gear. [Tobias] sent us the link to his project to that uses a cheap, discontinued cellphone gadget to create a Raspberry Pi controlled FM radio transmitter.
The Sony-Ericsson MMR-70 radio transmitter apparently used to connect to a cell phone and broadcast music. But the Walkman cellphones in question are a little bit old in the tooth, so one can buy the transmitter units for cheap on the resale market. What makes the transmitters even more interesting is that you can activate and deactivate the radio, change frequency or output power, and even send RDS station … Read more

Good news for the virtual reality types as Oculus makes the SDK for its mobile collaboration, the Samsung Gear, available on its developer site.
"The initial version of the Oculus Mobile SDK is specifically designed for the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition on Note 4, and includes everything you need to get started developing for mobile. We've been working on the Mobile SDK for over a year in collaboration with Samsung, optimizing the Note 4 tech stack to deliver the first ultra-low latency, mobile virtual reality headset."
The download and technical information can be found at the official site but features include direct front buffer rendering, GPU context priorities and real-time CPU threading. It also includes full-source code for Oculus Cinema, Oculus 360 Photos, and Oculus 360 Videos under an open license.
Today Samsung also opened a site for its Gear VR Innovator Edition for Note 4, with two versions on the tech available for delivery to the US in December.
Mobile was a major component of the Oculus Connect conference back in September, just check out the keynote given by veteran developer John Carmack.

November 12th, 2014, 22:19 Posted By: wraggster
Samsung has just unveiled a sneak preview of a new camera called Project Beyond, which is a 3D-capturing 360-degree camera designed to capture videos and stream them on the Gear VR. Pranav Mistry, Samsung's VP of Research, says that Beyond is a "new kind of camera that gives a new kind of immersive experience." The camera (which apparently houses 16 full HD cameras) shows a 360-degree panoramic view and captures everything in 3D, collecting a gigapixel of 3D data every second. It promises high-speed connectivity, adaptive stitching, ultra wide-angle optics and stereoscopic depth. And, this isn't just a concept. It's actually a fully working device. This, Mistry says, is really important for Gear VR, as you can feel as if you're "literally there." You can also have it set up so that every Gear VR user that's connected will be able to see the video stream, with "no lag whatsoever." Samsung says that it's "the world's first true 3D 360 degree camera" and captures and streams "omniview videos in stunning high-resolution 3D." We're still finding out more about this, but until then, here's the product page for more info.

If you've been eyeing Samsung's Gear VR headset to pair with that Galaxy Note 4, you might soon be in luck. The company announced today that the Innovator Edition of the virtual reality gadget will be available stateside in December. Of course, the Gear VR is powered by Oculus tech, using that super-sized smartphone's 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display to sort the "fully immersive" experience. In order to properly show off the device, Samsung and Oculus teamed up with the likes of Marvel, DreamWorks, Cirque du Soleil and others to craft VR offerings in hopes of convincing you to commit your funds. We're talking things like a tour of Tony Stark's Lab in advance of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The first time a Note 4 is connected to the Gear VR, Oculus software will automatically download to the handset for wrangling purchases, watching movies and more. Unfortunately, there's no word on pricing, but while you wait, you can opt forupdates from Samsung in the meantime.

Activision's latest sold more in week one than Titanfall, Destiny and Wolfenstein combined
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare beat COD: Ghosts' week one sales in the UK, though it was only the fifth biggest launch in the series' history.
According to data from Gfk Chart-Track, Advanced Warfare outsold Ghosts by a "convincing" margin, and moved more units in its first week on sale than Titanfall, Destiny and Wolfenstein: The New Order combined over the equivalent period - 14 per cent more, to be precise.
The next highest new entry was Sports Interactive's Football Manager 2015, which nestled behind the long-time number one FIFA 15, now residing in second place thanks to the release of Call of Duty.

Everyone's favorite minicomputer has just gotten even smaller. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is today introducing the Model A+, a revamped version of its low-end Model A board priced at just $20 (£20 in the UK). While the processor and RAM -- a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC and 256MB, to be specific -- remain the same as its predecessor, the new model is far smaller at just 65mm (2.6 inches) in length versus the old model's 86mm (3.4 inches). It also draws less power and has improved audio circuitry.
