As more and more people are stuck inside due to the spread of COVID-19, those who already play video games actively are increasing their playing time, social play, and spend.
Nielsen has shared data from a survey of 3,000 active gamers, defined as those who had owned at least a PC, PS4, Xbox One, and/or Nintendo Switch, play games at least one hour per week on average, and had purchased at least one game in the last six months. The survey covered the US, France, the UK, and Germany.
Of those, at least 20% of active regular game players in each country are now playing games even more often specifically because of COVID-19.
This is especially true in the US, where 45% are playing more frequently, with 38% of gamers in France saying they were playing more, and the UK with 29%.
Understandably, there have also been increases in playing with friends online rather than in-person. 29% of those surveyed in the US are playing online with others more often because of COVID-19.

Electronic Arts has committed up to $2 million to support COVID-19 relief efforts around the world.
Until June 30, the publisher will match-fund employee contributions made through the EA YourCause programme, which allows staff to choose local organisations to support.
Meanwhile, employees have been leading relief efforts at a grassroots level: in Canada, teams have donated cleaning supplies to local hospitals and provided support to food banks; in Sweden, there have been donations of hand sanitiser and face masks to local hospitals; and in the US, there has been a virtual food drive and over $8,000 worth of food donated to local support groups.
Additionally, the publisher has partnered with esport leagues and other organisations to support relief efforts, including FIFA, Madden, and the Apex team which hosted a $250,000 charity tournament in support of the International Federation Red Cross and Red Crescent COVID-19 Response fund.
"There has never been a more important moment for us to lend strength to our local communities," said CEO Andrew Wilson in an internal communication.
"Thanks to everyone that shared their support of local organisations -- your ideas were an inspiration. We look forward to expanding the impact we can have as the people of Electronic Arts, helping communities around the world during this most challenging time."

Disruption is what moves the needle forward. This is something that applies to business and it teaches us that we cannot deny the evolution of tomorrow. This is rightfully applicable to esports as well and the lessons it has taught us over the course of the COVID-19 outbreak. What esports made evident is that in a crisis, it is able to quickly adapt and thrive, while the platforms of old fall behind.
Throughout the world of professional sports, many traditional leagues such as the NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, and NASCAR shocked the world when they decided to suspend their practices and, in some cases, their leagues. As for esports, the impact hit just as hard -- especially on those with a physical presence. Numerous events have either been cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic, including events for DOTA 2, League of Legends, Overwatch, and many more. For a brief time, it seemed esports would follow the full suspension model being laid out by the traditional sports.
One article even assumed the cancellation for Apex Legends would be a "final blow" to the game's pro scene. Some have pondered that a dive in revenue and tournaments with no audiences would likely destroy the industry's footprint and any chance at legitimizing itself in the big leagues. While one can appreciate the sentiment, it turns out that esports is proving much more resilient to this crisis than other professional sports, and may be demonstrating the model for weathering a pandemic crisis such as this.

GameStop was ordered by the city of Boston to close a store that had still been serving customers, despite a state-wide lockdown.
The city's inspectional services department issued the order last Tuesday after finding the Dorchester store had been operating for several days, The Boston Globe reports.
Staff had been selling games through a gap in the door wearing gloves or GameStop plastic bags taped around their hands, as advised by an internal email.
The state of Massachusetts ordered all non-essential businesses to close down on March 24 to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Despite a previous attempt to position itself as "essential retail," GameStop does not qualify for offering curbside pickup services.

The UK government is working with leading game companies to spread its "Stay At Home, Save Lives" message amid the coronavirus lockdown.
Working with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, UK-based developers King, Rebellion, and Codemasters have agreed to feature the government guidance in their most popular games.
Now entering its third week of lockdown -- and with prime minister Boris Johnson having been admitted to hospital as a "precautionary measure" after he was diagnosed with the virus -- the UK is seeing the number of deaths doubling every three-and-a-half days according to the BBC.

Amazon's entry into the game streaming service could be pushed back to next year due to the disruption caused by COVID-19.
That's according to sources speaking to The New York Times, which reports the cloud game service is now referred to internally as Project Tempo.
It is designed to rival Google's Stadia, Microsoft's Project xCloud and Nvidia's GeForce Now. Amazon had hoped to introduce an early version this year, but coronavirus has caused complications that may delay the release.
The report follows ongoing rumours that Amazon is working on its own game streaming service.
Project Tempo is just one pillar of a major push into video games, for which Amazon has reportedly invested "hundreds of millions of dollars."
The first sign of this investment -- beyond the ongoing work on the Lumberyard engine -- will be Crucible, a multiplayer sci-fi shooter and the first original IP to come from Amazon's internal games studio.
This has also been delayed due to coronavirus-related concerns, originally due to be revealed in early March and launched on March 31. After travel restrictions disrupted Amazon's marketing plans -- likely an allusion to the postponement of GDC -- the game's launch was pushed back to April 14, and has since been delayed to a vague May.
Crucible will be a team-based game in the spirit of League of Legends and Dota 2, and has been developed by Amazon's studio in Seattle, now named Relentless -- a nod to the original name founder Jeff Bezos had planned for Amazon.
New World, an MMO developed by Amazon's team in Irvine, California, will also be released in May. The same studio is also working on a Lord of the Rings MMO, with a third unannounced project in the works at a San Diego studio under the leadership of former Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley.

UK retailer Game has put its entire staff on furlough with full pay through the end of April, following the temporary closure of all its retail locations due to COVID-19.
As confirmed by Eurogamer, its parent Frasers Group told staff last night via email it could pay them from March 26 through April 30, but it could guarantee neither full pay nor jobs beyond that point.
After April 30, staff will get paid 80% of their normal wage if their jobs still exist, capped at £2500 per month.

Gamescom is "significantly expanding" its digital presence for 2020, ahead of a crucial review in May that will determine whether the physical show can go ahead in August.
In a joint statement released today, the venue Koelnmesse and German industry association Game gave their clearest indication so far that the physical Gamescom event is in doubt due to the spread of COVID-19.
The two entities said that "an evaluation will be made in mid-May" about whether Gamescom will take place "onsite in Cologne" in August.
"If an on-site event is possible, there will also be more information at that stage with regard to which changes need to be made in order to fully ensure the health of all visitors," the statement read.
"This has been arranged with the largest exhibitors, therefore all Gamescom plans are continuing at full speed."
However, a larger amount of attention is now being paid to the digital aspects of Gamescom, such as the Opening Night Live format introduced last year. Koelnmesse and Game said that the show's digital footprint will be "significantly expanded and new modules added" as doubts linger about the validity of public events in 2020.
As such, Gamescom will be held "at least in a digital format" from August 25 to 29, even if a physical show is not deemed possible in mid-May. The same is true for the Devcom developer conference, which is held between August 22 and 24.

March 30th, 2020, 22:32 Posted By: wraggster
Marvel originally hired Patty Jenkins to direct Thor: The Dark World, following her Oscar-winning movie Monster starring Charlize Theron. However, Jenkins dropped out just three months after joining the project, citing "creative differences." But now, years later, Jenkins is speaking more about why she quit the movie, and it's now plain to see why did not want to be a part of it.
She told Vanity Fair that she was wary to direct the movie because the script wasn't good enough. She feared that, if the movie was a dud, people would blame her.
"I did not believe that I could make a good movie out of the script that they were planning on doing. I think it would have been a huge deal--it would have looked like it was my fault," Jenkins said. "It would’ve looked like, 'Oh my God, this woman directed it and she missed all these things.' That was the one time in my career where I really felt like, 'Do this with [another director] and it's not going to be a big deal. And maybe they'll understand it and love it more than I do."
Jenkins added: "You can't do movies you don't believe in."
After parting ways with Jenkins, Marvel hired Game of Thrones and The Sopranos veteran Alan Taylor to direct Thor: The Dark World. The movie was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who also wrote the final Avengers films, alongside Christopher Yost, who would go on to write Thor: Ragnarok.

Over 340,000 boxed video games were sold in the UK last week, according to GfK figures.
It is a drop of 28% compared to the previous week, but that was the release window of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is the biggest game launch of the year so far. Compared to the week before, which is a fairer comparison, boxed game sales are up 124%.
It's a strong performance for the physical games market, which has had to endure the closure of numerous stores (including GAME and Argos) as a result of a nationwide lockdown to slow the spread of coronavirus.
The No.1 game of the week was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which jumped 78% in sales week-on-week. That's followed by FIFA 20, which increased by 53% in sales.
Last week's top performer was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but the Switch game has plunged 81% in sales week-on-week and is now down at No.3, impacted by stock shortages following an impressive first week. Nintendo Switch games fell across the board this week, which is likely due to a lack of available stock of the console in the UK.

The success of Animal Crossing reflects the game itself to some extent; Nintendo's most eclectic top-tier IP built up gradually and steadily from humble beginnings, gently ingratiating itself over the course of 19 years and five releases. It's only now that it's dawning on us just how addicted the world actually is to this calmly unassuming little toybox with its charming style, relaxed pace and quirky animal pals.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons outsold both Pokémon Sword & Shield combined on its release in Japan last week, and has performed extraordinarily well in every other market as well; it's almost certainly the biggest single launch weekend for a Switch game thus far, and given Nintendo's remarkable ability to cultivate the longest of long tails for its games, it's also likely to be one of 2020's best sellers overall. There's a risk that the huge success of New Horizons will be dismissed as an unusual offshoot of the COVID-19 pandemic
Honestly, if you'd suggested only a few years ago that Animal Crossing was going to be a franchise with commercial clout rivalling that of Pokémon or Zelda, quite a few people would have assumed that you'd lost your marbles -- one too many late nights spent chatting to talking animals, perhaps. That the franchise was successful and popular is clear, of course, but there's always been a sense of it as an odd little Nintendo side-project rather than a top-ranked franchise. That sense is borne to a large extent from the difficulty a lot of people in the industry have with actually wrapping their heads around Animal Crossing; something so peculiar and so wilfully tangential to almost everything else the industry does must surely only be a curious experiment, after all.
This time around, there's probably a risk that the absolutely gigantic success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons -- both critical and commercial success and, perhaps most importantly of all, cultural success, with the game being discussed widely across social media since its launch -- will be dismissed as being some unusual offshoot of the COVID-19 pandemic. Already, that explanation is floating around in some quarters; Nintendo has had a remarkable hit because it's in the right place at the right time, with a gently sociable escapist fantasy launching right as much of the world goes into lockdown and quarantine.

Games industry digital spending continued to grow despite a deep drop in console spending in February, according to market intelligence firm Superdata.
The group found that worldwide digital games spending in February totalled $9.2 billion, up 4% year-over-year.
Mobile revenue drove that increase with a 16% year-over-year increase, more than offsetting declines in PC spending (down 6%) and consoles (down 22%).
Superdata blamed the lower console revenues on a light release slate this year running into a tough comparison with last February, which saw the launches of Apex Legends and Anthem.

The UK government has ordered all non-essential retail outlets to close down for at least three weeks in order to limit the spread of COVID-19.
In a televised address last night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said stores that are not essential to daily life, such as supermarkets and health shops, must shut to deter people from making unnecessary trips into town centres where they may contract the virus or transmit it to others.
Most video games retailers had already committed to such measures before the official guidance, and have made it clear on their websites that their High Street branches are closed for the foreseeable future.
Leading specialist Game confirms it is currently operating a normal online service, but has temporarily closed all its stores. This weekend, it confirmed the temporary closure of all Belong arenas.
Game parent Sports Digital had previously declared its intentions to stay open, given the government's allowance for people to go out and exercise once per day during this period of strict social distancing.
However, the BBC reports it has since altered this stance, promising to stay closed until the government approves. Bicycle shops, many of which are themed around fitness like Sports Direct, are included on a list of government-defined essential retailers.
In a statement on its website yesterday, UK retailer CEX confirmed it has temporarily closed all of its corporate-owned stores as of yesterday and will operate an online-only service going forward.

Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Angry Birds Dream Blast and Asphalt 9: Legends do not sound like they have an awful lot in common.
One is a co-operative first person action game. The second is a bubble popping family puzzler. And the third is one of mobile's most well-regarded racing simulators.
They're all very different games with very different challenges for very different people.
"With Warhammer: Vermintide 2, we wanted to build a co-operative game that allowed players to come together against a common adversary," says Martin Wahlund, CEO and co-founder of developer Fatshark.
"Not all gamers want to play versus games; some want to collaborate and build both their skills and their teams. When developing Vermintide, we were inspired by titles such as Left 4 Dead. There hasn't been a new release of those titles for 10 years now, and we believed that the genre needed a boost. Vermintide ticks all the boxes we wanted -- FPS, action, co-op, and challenging fun."
Meanwhile, for Asphalt developer Gameloft, the challenges were a little different when it came to creating the ninth game in the popular series.
"With Asphalt 9: Legends, we had a good idea of what we wanted to achieve right from the start," comments Albert Puértolas, Online Technical Director of Gameloft's Barcelona studio.
"It was a case of: 'This is a game which is already working, so what else can we do to justify a sequel? What will make it stand out, apart from just looking better?' During prototyping, players told us they wanted more control over the cars, and to be able to really feel the difference between a car that accelerates rapidly and one that has better handling. We put a lot of time into trying to make those differences more palpable. We even played around with road surfaces."

The National Videogame Museum is under threat of permanent closure as the UK enters lockdown to contain the spread of coronarvirus (COVID-19).
Following its busiest week ever, the NVM took early advice from the UK government and closed last week to protect staff and visitors.
However, the closure has put the museum's future in doubt as it struggles to finance itself without visitors.
The British Games Institute, which operates the NVM, has launched an urgent appeal to save the nation's only dedicated video game museum.
Opened in November 2018, the NVM hosted over 40,000 visitors throughout last year and takes in thousands of children on school visits.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz at the grand opening, museum director Iain Simons said it would be "the centre of gravity for the past, present and future of video games with the broader public."
Last week was the museum's busiest to date, and the NVM says it had been planning an "ambitious programme celebrating games studios and games culture in 2020/21."
The BGI is asking for donations to secure the museum's future, while companies are urged to contact the charity and become permanent patrons.

We know a lot more about both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this week than we did last week. Both Sony and Microsoft have started laying cards on the table; the similarities between their devices -- which both derive from essentially the same AMD-sourced CPU and GPU architecture -- have been known for a long time, but now we're starting to see the all-important differences.
The merits of the big technical differences -- the Series X has a notably punchier GPU, while the PS5 has opted for a significantly faster SSD -- are going to be hotly debated by experts for months, and even more hotly debated by clueless people for literally years. While I don't wish to understate the technical edge Microsoft's hardware has in this match-up -- about 20% more raw graphical power, it seems -- the reality is that we won't know for certain how much of a difference these hardware design decisions have made until we start seeing finished games running on production hardware, which remains months away.
What we can see for now, however, is a very real difference in the strategic approach being taken by these two companies -- not just to their consoles, but to the whole process of communicating about those consoles to the public.Aside from price point information, there's remarkably little about the Xbox Series X we don't know
What's arguably just as interesting as the cards we're starting to see laid on the table, then, is which cards are being laid and when. Microsoft and Sony are playing very different games in this regard; the former is being extremely open, to the point of having allowed the media to play with and film a "snap-together" version of its Xbox Series X hardware showing all the internal components, not to mention having shown off final console and controller designs, and a number of core features of the new system software.
This is, as far as I can recall, a genuinely unprecedented level of openness for a system that's not set to launch until this winter. Aside from the crucial price point information, there's remarkably little about the Xbox Series X we don't know already.
Sony, by contrast, is playing a more traditional game. We know more about PS5 after Mark Cerny's presentation this week -- we know a lot more detail about its hardware performance and functionality -- but we have yet to see much of the consumer-relevant stuff about the console. We don't know about its price, of course -- muttered rumours about trouble with keeping down the manufacturing costs aside -- but we also don't know about the system software, the launch exclusives, or crucially, the physical design of the hardware.
