Microsoft has unveiled the successor to its mixed reality headset HoloLens.
HoloLens 2 took centre stage at a press event around Mobile World Congress Barcelona this weekend, demonstrated by Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman.
The new model more than doubles the field of view of the original, and has reworked the way users interact with holograms. The new time-of-flight depth sensor enables you to directly manipulate AR objects in the way you would their real-world counterparts.
Microsoft has also added eye-tracking sensors to make interactions feel even more natural, and iris recognition will enable users to log in without the need for passwords or other forms of security check.
The design of HoloLens itself has also been revamped, with a new mechanism for putting the device on that doesn't require it to be adjusted first. Microsoft claims it has "accounted for the wide physiological variability in the size and shape of human heads by designing HoloLens 2 to comfortably adjust and fit almost anyone."

A group of Microsoft workers is campaigning for their employer to cancel a contract that would see the US Army using HoloLens on the battlefield.
We previously reported that Microsoft won the $479 million contract over competing bids from other firms such as Magic Leap to provide mixed reality headsets for the military.
Now Microsoft Workers 4 Good, a group that started back in January, has posted an open letter online to CEO Satya Nadella and president and chief legal officer Brad Smith, calling for the contact to be cancelled.
The group says it is "alarmed that Microsoft is working to provide weapons technology to the US Military, helping one country's government 'increase lethality' using tools we built."
The letter continues: "We did not sign up to develop weapons, and we demand a say in how our work is used."
Microsoft Workers 4 Good notes that many of the engineers who have helped develop HoloLens before this contract was won believed the device would be used for non-harmful means, including helping architects and other engineers design buildings and cars, teaching everything from complex surgery to playing the piano, and even hoping to "push the boundaries of gaming."

Epic Games has removed all of its pre-roll ads from YouTube after it was discovered that ads for a number of companies and services were playing on videos being used by predators to exploit children.
The Verge reports that earlier this week, a YouTube channel run by creator Matt Watson published a video exposing "a wormhole into a soft-core pedophilia ring on YouTube." Watson points out that YouTube effectively has a collective of videos that include children in them that, while not explicit themselves, have comment sections populated by users time stamping moments or scenes that could be considered to sexualize the children involved, along with remarks to that effect. Many of these videos feature pre-roll ads (ads that play before the video) from companies such as Grammarly and Google.
In addition, Watson notes that these videos are easy to access via YouTube's algorithm from completely benign videos, even from a fresh account without existing video recommendations based on past viewing.

It's no secret the esports scene has had issues appealing to women, but there are some indications the situation is at least improving. A brief released today by market research firm Interpret indicates that women and girls are making up a significantly larger share of the esports audience than they were just two years ago.
According to Interpret's latest quarterly online survey of around 9,000 US residents, 30.4% of people who watch esports on console or PC are female. That's up from 23.9% for the fourth quarter survey of 2016. Overall, girls and women account for 35% of people who play esports games on console or PC, and 20.3% of those who watch a specific esports league on those platforms.

The US games industry saw declines in January despite a full slate of big new releases. The NPD Group today released its monthly US sales report, showing total game sales down 19% for the month to $893 million.
That decline came despite the January debuts of Kingdom Hearts III, the Resident Evil 2 remake, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Some of that was dip was due to a tough comparison; last year's January haul of $1.1 billion was led by Monster Hunter World and Dragon Ball FighterZ, representing the industry's best opening sales month since 2011.

In addition to topping UK charts and EMEAA region charts for its debut week, it should be little surprise that Kingdom Hearts III also won over Japan. The PS4 version of the game sits comfortably at the top of this week's Media Create sales charts, just above Resident Evil 2 on the same platform.
Though it's impossible to tell for certain, it appears that Kingdom Hearts III's debut (including the version bundled with a PS4 Pro) aided hardware sales for both the standard PS4 and especially the PS4 Pro this past week as well, as both numbers are notably higher than they've been in recent weeks.
The remainder of the top ten for Japan are mostly-unsurprising Nintendo contenders that have been hovering in the vicinity of the chart's upper regions for weeks now, though one stand-out is Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World, which debuted in Japan only last week. The game opened at No.6 on PS4 (its Switch version is at No.11) and is a testament to the popularity of such RPGs in the region.
The top 10 software sellers for the week of January 28, 2019 - February 3, 2019 are shown below, along with hardware sales. The remainder of the chart can be viewed through Media Create.

A new study from the Oxford Internet Institute claims to have found no link between time spent playing violent video games, and increased aggressive behaviour teen teenagers.
Published in Royal Society Open Science, the study is "one of the most definitive to date" according to the University of Oxford.
While many studies have previously made similar and contrary claims, lead researcher professor Andrew Przybylski said the "idea that violent video games drive real-world aggression is a popular one, but it hasn't tested very well over time".
According to the university, this study is set apart from previous work by preregistration, where researchers publish their hypothesis, methods and analysis technique before beginning research.
"Part of the problem in technology research is that there are many ways to analyse the same data, which will produce different results," said Przybylski.
"A cherry-picked result can add undue weight to the moral panic surrounding video games. The registered study approach is a safeguard against this."
This was supported by co-author Dr Netta Weinstein from Cardiff University who said: "Our findings suggest that researcher biases might have influenced previous studies on this topic, and have distorted our understanding of the effects of video games."
A common criticism of previous research in this area is its over-reliance on self-reporting. However, this latest study used a combination of subjective and data and information from parents and carers.
Although there was no correlation found between playing video games and agressive behaviour in tennagers, researchers noted that games can provoke angry feelings or reactions.
"Anecdotally, you do see things such as trash-talking, competitiveness and trolling in gaming communities that could qualify as antisocial behaviour,' says Przybylski. 'This would be an interesting avenue for further research."
The study used representative sample of British 14 and 15-year olds and the same number of their careers, totalling 2,008 subjects.
The published research, titled 'Violent video game engagement is not associated with adolescents' aggressive behaviour: evidence from a registered report', can be found here.
This research comes at a crucial time for the industry as debate around the effect of violent video games has returned with renewed increased vigour over the last 12 months.

In addition to rapidly gathering a large audience, Apex Legends is now making waves on Twitch.
The free-to-play battle royale title achieved the fourth highest single-day views in five years, thanks to the Twitch Rivals event arranged by developer Respawn and the streaming platform earlier this week.
On February 12th, Apex Legends fans watched 8.4 million hours of matches, according to Twitch tracker Gamoloco. The firm's study dates back to October 2014.
Most notably, that's more than a million higher that Fortnite's most successful single-day viewing, which was 7.2 million hours for the game's Season 5 launch last July.
Apex Legends' Twitch Rivals lost out on a place in the three most-viewed events, all of which were for Counter-Strike: GO. Two of the top three took place during the 2015 ESL One Cologne contest, with 8.4 million hours viewed on August 12 and 8.6 million on August 22nd.

Far Cry: New Dawn is this week's No.1 game in the UK boxed retail charts.
It was the most competitive release week since before Christmas, with four big new games entering the Top 20.
Although Far Cry managed to top the charts, it isn't an especially impressive opening week. The game's launch week sales are 86.5 per cent down over last year's Far Cry 5. Of course, this is a spin-off Far Cry title, and so the comparison isn't overly fair. Yet even compared to 2016's Far Cry Primal (the previous spin-off), sales are a fraction of what we'd typically expect (Far Cry Primal sold almost four times as many units in its first week as New Dawn has).
60 per cent of Far Cry: New Dawn sales came on PS4, 39 per cent on Xbox One, with the rest on PC (physical sales only).
A company that will likely be feeling happier with the result this week is Deep Silver. Metro Exodus missed out on No.1 by just 2,000 units. Yet more significantly, the game has posted a better opening week than 2013's Metro Last Light (released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC). This result is even more impressive when you consider the growth of digital sales in the six years between the two titles (digital game sales are not counted in this data).
Launch physical sales for Metro Exodus are almost 50 per cent higher than Last Light. 57 per cent of Metro Exodus sales came on PS4.
Next up in terms of new releases is Bandai Namco's Jump Force at No.4. Its a strong opening performance for the fighting game, and continues an impressive few weeks for the publisher (following recent strong sales of Tales Of and Ace Combat). The game performed best on PS4, accounting for 76 per cent of the game's launch sales.
The most disappointing launch of the week belongs to Microsoft's Crackdown 3, which only made No.13. The game's launch sales are barely 10 per cent of what Crackdown 2 managed in 2010. Of course, the industry was very different back then. Xbox 360 was the market leading console, digital sales were not as significant as they are today (again, only physical is counted here) and Crackdown 3 will likely have picked up a fair few users via the Xbox Game Pass subscription service (which isn't included here).

Electronic Arts has dropped Cristiano Ronaldo from the cover of FIFA 19, five months after the game launched.
The Juventus star and face of the FIFA games since 2017 has been the centre of controversy following historic rape allegations from 2009, and a more recent tax evasion conviction.
His place on the game's box art and menus has been taken by Paulo Dybala, Neymar da Silva Santos, and Kevin de Bruyne.
An EA spokesperson told Eurogamer the rebrand was in aid of the UEFA Champions League which kicked off on Wednesday last week.
"With the UEFA Champions League coming to EA Sports FIFA 19 this year, we have a unique opportunity to offer a range of new content to players that reflects the real-world excitement of football," reads the statement.
"We often celebrate different talent across our sports games, and with the UEFA Champions League knockout stages underway we are featuring some of the biggest stars in football and bringing new players a range of content to get excited about."

The Entertainment Software Association has responded to the revival of a Pennsylvania state house bill attempting to collect an additional tax on video games rated mature and for adults, calling the bill a "violation of the US constitution."
The bill was initially introduced last year but died in committee, and has since been brought back as House Bill 109. If passed into law, the bill would apply a 10% additional sales tax on any mature or adult-rated games sold at retail in the state on top of existing taxes. Proceeds would then go to the Digital Protection for School Safety Account, which would be used for "enhancing school safety measures."

Disney is unlikely to return to publishing its own games, praising the companies that it currently licences its franchises too. Yes, even Electronic Arts.
Or rather "notably EA and the relationship on the Star Wars properties", as CEO Robert Iger phrased it in an earnings call following its most recent financial results (transcribed by Seeking Alpha).
Iger was asked by an investor for an update on how Disney plans to participate in the video games space, and the CEO said that "we're obviously mindful of the size of that business."
He continued: "But over the years, as you know, we've tried our hand in self-publishing. We've bought companies. We've sold companies. We've bought developers. We've closed developers.
"And we found over the years that we haven't been particularly good at the self-publishing side, but we've been great at the licensing side."
Iger said the firm has enjoyed "good relationships with some of those we're licensing to", highlighting Electronic Arts as a particularly successful partnership and saying Disney is "probably going to continue" these sort of deals.
It's a statement that may raise a few eyebrows across the industry, particularly among consumers, given the controversy surrounding EA's use of the Star Wars IP. Most notably, the publisher caused controversy last year with its loot box monetisation mechanic in 2017's Star Wars Battlefront II -- and Disney reportedly pressured EA to remove it at the last minute.

The return of Resident Evil 2 has taken the EMEAA region by storm as the game debuts at No.1 in all three forms of ISFE's charts.
The Interactive Software Federation of Europe offers best-seller rankings for both physical and digital games, plus a chart that combines the two -- and Resident Evil 2 tops them all.
These charts are calculated for the week ending January 27, 2019, so expect Kingdom Hearts III to shake things up when we receive updated data.
Resident Evil 2 fends off ongoing strong sales for FIFA 19, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, with a few more unusual contenders in the digital chart.
While Grand Theft Auto V drops one place to No.2 in the download rankings, ousted by Capcom's horror hit, Focus Home Interactive takes No.3 with the launch of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II.
In fact, digital sales alone were enough to propel this game to No.7 in the combined charts, as Battlefleet Gothic does not appear in the Retail Top 50.
Elsewhere in the digital chart, discounting enables Battlefield 1, Battlefield 4, Steep, Monster Hunter World and EA Sports UFC 2 to secure places in the Top 10. All other titles above them can be found in the upper echelons of both the physical and combined charts.

UK entertainment retail chain HMV has been rescued from administration by Canada's Sunrise Records.
The BBC reports the latter firm will buy 100 stores for an undisclosed sum and secure just shy of 1,500 jobs.
Unfortunately, 27 stores will still have to close and 455 employees will be let go. KPMG, the administrator that has been running HMV while seeking a buyer, is expected to tell staff today whether their store is to close.
HMV entered administration just days after Christmas, with chairperson Paul McGowan attributing this to a number of factors: the "unsustainable" deterioration of the DVD market, rising business rates and the rise of government-centric policies, plus the "general malaise of the UK High Street."
It was the second time the chain had entered administration, following similar troubles in January 2013. It was soon rescued by Hilco.
Sunrise Records, the retailer's saviour this time around, is run by Canadian entrepreneur Doug Putman, who previously bought HMV's business in his home market back in 2017. This transformed Sunrise Records from a small chain into a nationwide retailer.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Putman said: "I feel really lucky to be able to say we [will] continue to call it HMV.

February 5th, 2019, 17:45 Posted By: wraggster
When the news of Apex Legends leaked out over the weekend, I was genuinely quite excited. Not so much by the game itself (although I'm sure it's great) but the method in which it was being announced.
It was leaning on influencers first and foremost, no pre-launch hype, no PR campaign. This is EA's first major new IP since 2014's Titanfall (discounting those great EA Originals titles), sneaking out just before that other major new IP Anthem, and the publisher was just going to drop it on us out of nowhere. It's a sign of supreme confidence in the product and a bold marketing strategy. Could it work? It would be brilliant if it did.
And then the game's line producer, Drew McCoy, gave that above quote to Eurogamer. And the excitement I felt vanished in a moment. This wasn't some bold new, experimental marketing initiative, but an inevitable reaction to a no-win PR situation.
EA is acutely aware of the toxicity its name can evoke in certain circles. After all, we're talking about a company that has won and still ranks highly in the 'worst companies in America' list (who knew making video games could be so evil?). It knows how games communities and the media feel about loot boxes and free-to-play (they hate them). It knows how games communities and the media feel about Titanfall (they love it). The conspiracy theories write themselves. EA, after sending Titanfall 2 out to die during a hyper competitive month, bought up the business and forced it to stop making Titanfall games and build a free-to-play title instead.

Square Enix's long-in-development Kingdom Hearts III has topped the UK charts in its first week.
It's the first time the franchise has topped the charts and it's the most successful UK launch on record for the series, at least since the original game proved such a major hit on PlayStation 2 (UKIE/GfK data currently doesn't stretch that far back).
Its sales are more than double that of its direct predecessor, which was released 14 years ago on PlayStation 2. And it's certainly more popular than the subsequent spin-offs and 'remix' versions.
Digital downloads are not included in these figures. Digital downloading didn't exist on consoles for the previous mainline titles in the series, so we should expect that Kingdom Hearts III performed even stronger than what is suggested here.
Because of its PlayStation heritage, it's unsurprisingly to discover that 82 per cent of the game's sales came on PS4, with Xbox One accounting for the remainder.
This does mean that last week's No.1, Resident Evil 2, falls to second spot. The game slipped 67 per cent in sales week-on-week.

Twitch continues to lead the way in games-based livestreaming with viewers racking up more than nine billion hours watching broadcasts on the site last year.
The figure comes from the latest State of the Stream report by StreamElements, which shows Twitch's 9.36 billion hours was well ahead of both YouTube Live and Mixer combined.
However, YouTube Live is on the rise, holding gamers' attention for 2.31 billion hours -- roughly 25% of Twitch's total. Mixer remains a distant third 167.96 million hours viewed (just 2% of Twitch's hours).
Both platforms are showing remarkable growth. YouTube's hours watched grew by 414.5 million, a year-on-year increase of 104% and not far short of the 506 million hours Twitch grew by (up 25% year-on-year).
Mixer's hours watched rose by 39.6 million over the course of 2018, a year-on-year improvement of 179%.
Looking at Twitch specifically, it will come as no surprise that Fortnite was the most viewed game of the year, with over one billion hours watched. This is 373 million more hours than League of Legends, the second most popular game.
Fortnite reached its peak viewing hours of 399.5 million during the second quarter, around the time that attention on the game was at its highest thanks to its arrival on mobile and increased coverage from the mainstream media.
It declined by the end of the year, down roughly 15% to 340.1 million for Q4. However, this still isn't as low as Q1 2018, which racked up roughly 220 million hours viewed.
