Recovering from a big bet that didn't quite pay off can be one of the toughest things a games company has to go through. There's an expectation of constant growth, that your titles will get bigger and better each time, but sometimes the scope can expand beyond your capabilities as a studio.
This was the case with Sniper Ghost Warrior 3, the 2017 open-world first-person shooter by Polish developer CI Games. The game was more ambitious than anything the studio had made to date, yet didn't have the impact or sales the company needed.
Just three months after its launch, CI Games admitted it was a "big mistake" in aiming for the AAA shooter space, trying to stand alongside titles developed by bigger teams with much bigger budgets.

The game was by no means a failure, but even the one million sales it managed did not prevent CI Games from significantly downsizing a year later. CEO Marek Tymiński tells GamesIndustry.biz the total sales are now close to 1.5 million units, which -- while still not up to the company's own expectations -- is "not a bad result."

In 2019, the series returns with Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts, and Tymiński is confident the game will rectify the mistakes made with its predecessor, with CI Games determinedly avoiding comparison with AAA games.
"We have fixed most of the problems that SGW3 had, but competing with major games is tough and requires large teams," he says. "Our internal studio is only around 35 people.

Without surprise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the best-selling game in October in the US, as well as the "best-selling game of the year to date," NPD reported in its monthly charts.
NPD's VG industry analyst, Mat Piscatella, pointed out that it's the "12th consecutive year a Call of Duty game has ranked as the best-selling game of its release month," adding that the series remains the best-selling franchise in the US since NPD started tracking games sales.
Debuting at No.2 was The Outer Worlds, while Luigi's Mansion 3 took third place -- though it's worth noting that unlike Activision and Take-Two, Nintendo doesn't share its digital sales with NPD so the game would have likely charted higher if it had been the case as it's been performing extremely well elsewhere.
"Luigi's Mansion 3 set a new launch month franchise sales record, besting the previous high set by Luigi's Mansion," Piscatella commented.
A result of this good performance was the Switch taking the crown for best-selling hardware of October -- and overall the best selling console of 2019 so far.
Hardware spending overall was down 41% compared to October 2018, to $182 million, with the Switch being the only console which saw its sales increase both in October as well as year-to-date.
Meanwhile, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint had to settle for No.6 for its first month in the charts, while WWE 2K20 debuted at No.7. Ring Fit Adventure seems to have performed quite well in the US, entering the October charts at No.10.
Total spending across hardware, software, accessories and game cards reached $1.03 billion in October.
But it didn't reach the heights of October 2018, which had been the best October month of the past decade, with $1.57 billion spent -- October 2019 had to settle for second best October of the decade.
Software sales in particular declined quite sharply year-on-year, with a 37% decrease in spending.

November 17th, 2019, 21:08 Posted By: wraggster
For much of the current decade, every single year was declared to be the eve of VR's ascendency. The big breakthrough, the headsets and the software that would finally bring this technology surging into mainstream adoption was always coming next year, like a desert mirage promising water on the horizon that never really gets any closer.
It's been a while, though, since we heard that claim; bold predictions about VR have been sobered by the harsh reality that even with decent-quality headsets and some pretty good software, it turns out that VR in its current form simply isn't something most consumers are excited enough about to push them over the barriers to entry. "Adapting to smartphones was hard; AR will be harder. Yet the pot of gold at the end of that rainbow is so tantalising, it's impossible not to chase after it"
If VR has been tested and found somewhat wanting (for now -- all bets are off when new technologies enter the space, as they inevitably will), AR remains a tantalising prospect that's eternally even further over the horizon. The same expectations that VR's boom was coming next year... next year... no, next year, for real this time -- these were almost always paired with equally confident predictions that AR glasses would hit the mainstream just three or four years later. Even as VR has settled back into something more like a holding pattern -- it's not going away, but it's not the boom many had hoped for either -- the excitement over AR continues to build apace, both in the games sector and far beyond.
It's hard not to be a little cynical about a technology that's been held out as being just over the horizon for such a long time -- but it's far harder to deny the real potential of AR. The concept itself overcomes one of the key problems with VR, whose very selling point -- total immersion -- actually turned out to be a weakness as it became clear how few consumers are willing to spend much time so completely cut off from their physical surroundings. AR builds on your experience of the world around you rather than cutting you off from it, a distinction which creates almost limitless potential for the technology -- while also creating significant additional technical challenges over and above those VR has struggled with thus far.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has established a beachhead on the EMEAA charts. Activision's latest shooter was the No. 1 game in terms of combined physical and digital unit sales for the third straight week, fending off challenges from five new entries into the top 10.
The PS4-exclusive Death Stranding came the closest to toppling Call of Duty, debuting in the second spot on the charts, followed closely by fellow new release Need for Speed: Heat. The remaining new arrivals in the top 10 included two Switch exclusives -- Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 (sixth place) and Layton's Mystery Journey (ninth place) -- as well as the multiplatform Just Dance 2020 (tenth place).
The only other new release in the top 50 was Jumanji: The Video Game, which wound up 38th on the chart.
As for big movers, Paradox's Cities: Skylines on the PC surged from 277th place to 31st and Middle-earth: Shadow of War jumped from 52nd to 14th. Headed the other direction were Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, which fell from seventh to 25th, and The Outer Worlds, which dropped from tenth to 24th.

Luigi's Mansion 3 failed to unseat Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in the EMEAA charts, which remained the No.1 game in terms of retail, digital and combined sales.
Modern Warfare stormed to the top last week, though it could be argued that The Outer Worlds, MediEvil and the notoriously buggy WWE 2K20 didn't amount to serious competition.
Luigi's Mansion 3 is another matter. It is one of the most significant Switch exclusives of the year, behind the clear favourite Pok?mon Sword and Shield. However, despite the pedigree and the captive audience on Nintendo's console, it only finished second in the combined physical and digital sales chart.
Call of Duty remained top of every single chart provided by ISFE GSD: physical, digital and combined, in terms of both units sold and money earned.
The only other new entry in the combined EMEAA chart was Nighthawk Interactive's Disney Classic Games: Aladdin + The Lion King, which made it to 14th place.

Roughly 78% of gaming preteens ages 10 to 12 watch online gaming videos, along with around 67% of children ages seven to nine, according to a study from SuperData.
A survey of 1,000 US parents who had at least one child between the ages of seven and 12 that played games at least once a week found that those children would primarily watch gaming videos on YouTube or Twitch to improve their own skills, or because they enjoyed the personalities of the video creators.
Of all those surveyed, 33% played Roblox, 26% played Fortnite, and 24% played Minecraft. Tablet was the most popular device among the younger players (used by 55% of children ages seven to nine), though console was a close second with 54% of the same group using it. The older respondents ages 10 to 12 were more overwhelmingly interested in consoles (76%). PC was the least popular overall, with only 33% of children ages seven to nine and 28% of preteens ages ten to 12 reporting using it.

November 7th, 2019, 20:48 Posted By: wraggster
It's no surprise to learn that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare dominated the monthly physical charts in the UK this October.
Having launched two weeks later than its predecessor, it makes it difficult to directly compare its monthly performance with Black Ops 4. Purely looking at the figures, Modern Warfare sold 28% fewer copies than its predecessor did during its first month, though adding that extra fortnight and the shift to digital sales, it's highly likely it actually performed better than Black Ops 4.
That is backed by the fact Activision revealed last week that Modern Warfare was the fastest-selling entry in the series this generation, grossing $100 million more than Black Ops 4 in its first three days, while physical launch sales were 39% higher than the previous entry.
Focusing back on the October charts, it's worth noting that Modern Warfare sold primarily on PS4 -- 62% of the physical copies were shifted on Sony's platform, versus 38% on Xbox One.
Meanwhile, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint had to settle for No.3 for its first month on shelves. Ubisoft's title wasn't able to beat FIFA 20, which took No.2 after debuting at the top of the charts in September. Sales for EA's football behemoth were only down 37% month-on-month and only a couple of thousand copies separated FIFA 20 from Modern Warfare.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint sold 74% fewer copies than predecessor Ghost Recon Wildlands did during its first month back in March 2017 -- and that was a very busy month, with the game competing with Horizon Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild and Mass Effect Andromeda. Breakpoint is likely to have done much better digitally, though.
WWE 2K20, despite being mired with bugs and glitches at launch, debuted at No.5. Sales for the wrestling title were down 44% year-on-year.
Further down the Top Ten, Private Division's The Outer Worlds entered the monthly charts at No.8, with 78% of the sales going to PS4, versus 22% for Xbox One -- the title was available on Xbox Game Pass though, which would partly explain this divide.
Ghostbusters The Video Game Remastered and Ring Fit Adventure respectively debuted at No.14 and No.15, while Sony's MediEvil remake had to settle for No.18, having only been on shelves for a couple of days when GfK closed its report for the month.
Last but not least, Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville debuted at No.27, with a fairly equal divide between PS4 (54%) and Xbox One (46%).
It was overall a weak October at retail, with unit sales down 39% year-on-year -- though Red Dead Redemption 2 launched at the same period last year, boosting the market.

Despite only being on sale for two days, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has stormed to the top of the EMEAA charts in terms of both digital and retail sales.
Naturally, that also makes it the best-selling game of the week in the combined charts for the region, which encompasses 43 countries.
Activision's latest blockbuster fended off competition from a variety of new releases, as did EA's FIFA 20, which dropped no lower than No.2 in the retail and combined charts, and still managed to secure a No.4 in the download rankings.
FIFA was denied the digital No.2 spot by the ongoing success of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege (up 16 places to No.2) and Grand Theft Auto V (a non-mover at No.3). Rainbow Six appears much higher in the digital charts than it does in either retail or combined, suggesting downloads are the biggest source of sales at the moment.
The PS4 remake of Medieval was the next biggest new launch overall, at No.3 in the combined and retail charts, and No.5 in download.
Next came WWE 2K20 at No.4 in the combined charts, also outselling Obsidian's acclaimed The Outer Worlds in the digital charts.
Interestingly, the sci-fi RPG beat the wrestling title at retail, indicating digital sales for the latter may have been the clincher in the combined rankings. (It's worth noting the ISFE charts do not include Game Pass downloads, since these would not count as traditional sales).

A new report from the NPD shows US consumers have spent a little under $30 billion on video games products and services since the year began.
The company's Q3 2019 Games Market Dynamics: US report states spending for January 1st to September 30, 2019 reached $27.9 billion, a slight increase of 1% year-on-year.
Spending for Q3 (July 1 to September 30) was reported as $9.18 billion, also up 1% year-on-year.
The NPD reported double-digital percentage growth in spending on mobile, subscription services and digital console content, but this was offset by declines across various other segments -- most notably, hardware.

It's a good week for Activision as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare delivers a very strong first week at UK games retail.
For physical sales alone, the game has sold 39% more units than its predecessor managed (Call of Duty: Black Ops 4) during its launch week. The sales are not as high as 2017's Call of Duty: WWII, but GamesIndustry.biz understands that with digital included, the sales are a lot closer. We won't know the full extent of its digital performance until the GSD charts arrive later in the week.
62% of the game's sales are on PS4, which has the bigger install base and access to the Spec Ops survival mode. 38% of sales are on Xbox One.
The arrival of Call of Duty at No.1 means EA's FIFA 20 slips to No.2. Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe falls from No.2 to No.6 (despite sales rising 2% week-on-week).
The rest of the Top Five are all new releases. At No.3 is WWE 2K20. The game seems to have charted highly, but actually launch week sales are down 31% compared to its predecessor. The title has been criticised in the press for various bugs and flaws, which may have hurt its performance.
Like Call of Duty, 62% of boxed sales are on PS4 with 38% on Xbox One.
Next, The Outer Worlds from Obsidian debuted at No.4. This is an interesting game, because the media and certain consumers may have expected more from the title's performance (it must be noted that this is just physical sales -- digital is not included and will likely make up a significant part of the sales). This new IP has been compared to the Fallout series, reviews were decent overall, and with a (comparative) lack of significant releases this Christmas, The Outer Worlds had been earmarked as a breakout hit.
But just because expectations had risen amongst media and gamers, that may not have been the case for its publisher. The Outer Worlds was published by Private Division, which is Take-Two's smaller label dedicated to independent games. It was also released on the same day at Call of Duty, which suggests the firm was not expecting a big launch (at least not at physical retail). Indeed, when you consider the game was also available via Game Pass, it appears Private Division and Obisidian are hoping it will benefit from strong word-of-mouth and perform well over the full Christmas period.

60% of European gamers surveyed in a recent study say they're unlikely to buy a games console that does not play physical discs.
The data comes from the latest research conducted by ISFE and Ipsos MORI's GameTrack survey, on behalf of GamesIndustry.biz. The data covers UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
Gamers have been increasingly downloading major releases over buying them in boxes. In June, digital games data tracker GSD revealed to us that (during Q1 this year) some markets are now more than 50% digital for AAA releases such as Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, Star Wars, Call of Duty, Tom Clancy and Red Dead Redemption.
The UK was 56% digital for these titles, France was 47% digital, Germany (including Switzerland and Austria) was 50% digital, Spain (plus Portugal) was 35% and Italy was 33%.
Interestingly, the data loosely matches up with the interest in a digital-only games console. According to Ipsos MORI's survey results, 17% of UK gamers would be likely to buy a digital-only machine, French players are 12% likely, German fans are 11% likely, while Spain and Italy are both 6% likely to buy a device like Microsoft's Xbox One S All-Digital.

FIFA 20 is the best-selling game across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australia for a fourth consecutive week.
The football game was the most popular physical title of the week and the second most popular download.
The nearest competitor in the combined chart is another EA game: Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. The game was a big success in digital and actually unseated FIFA 20 as the most downloaded game of the week. It didn't perform quite so well at physical retail, only managing to reach No.9.
Indeed, behind FIFA, the big performers at physical retail were Nintendo's Ring Fit Adventure at No.2 and a resurgent The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt at No.3 by CD Projekt. The Witcher 3 was boosted by the new Nintendo Switch version of the game.
Nintendo doesn't share download figures with the charts, although Ring Fit Adventure was actually only available at boxed retail due to the need for a physical accessory. In the combined chart, Ring Fit Adventure was actually at No.4.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's digital sales are not included, and so in the combined chart the game made No.6.
Typically at this time of year, the charts are flooded with big AAA releases. Yet this is a quieter year than we are used to, and there are games that are breaking into the top parts of the charts thanks to some digital discounting. Total War: Warhammer II rose 316 places to No.10, for instance. Meanwhile, Cities: Skylines is at No.13, rising up from 207th place.

In 2019, the French video game industry had a total of 1200 games in production, 63% of which were brand new IP, according to a survey of over 1,130 companies.
In an annual industry survey conducted by the French Video Game Trade Association (SNJV) and IDATE Digiworld, 50% of companies reported being development studios, while 42% were service or technology providers. Over half of the development studios are less than five years old.
In terms of hiring, 75% of employees were considered "permanent contracts," 23% were "fixed-term contracts," and only 2% were trainees. 57% of the companies surveyed said they would be hiring in 2020.
Across the French industry, 14% of employees are women, while 2% are non-binary. The percentage of women in the French industry has held steady since at least 2016, according to results of past surveys.

Nintendo are the big winners this week as Switch titles take over the Top 10, thanks in part to the release of The Witcher 3 and the platform holder's latest experiment with fitness gaming.
CD Projekt Red's seminal RPG landed at No.4. Naturally, the vast majority of copies sold this week -- 96%, in fact -- were for Switch, selling almost exactly the same amount as Skyrim in its debut week. With a handful of copies shifted on PS4, Xbox One and PC, the game's overall sales increased 999% week-on-week.
The Witcher 3 was not, however, the best-selling Switch game of the week. Instead, that title goes to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, rising from No.3 to No.2 on the back of a 10% sales boost. The racer has been a consistent best-seller for Switch -- now past one million lifetime sales in the UK -- and could well be benefitting from the recent launch of the Switch Lite (or perhaps Mario Kart Tour players looking for a more premium experience).
Five of the top ten best-selling games this week were for Switch or led by the Switch version. Nintendo's newest IP, Ring Fit Adventure, debuted at No.5, with the remake of Zelda: Link's Awakening continuing to sell well at No.8.
The Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft took No.6, but once again if you combine with the sales figures for the Xbox and PlayStation versions (listed separately, as each is published by the respective platform holders), the title would actually be at No.2.
Outside the Top 10, the release of a Switch version of Overwatch put Blizzard's shooter at No.11. As with The Witcher, there were a handful of sales on the other consoles, with combined sales up 563% week-on-week.

FIFA 20 made a clean sweep of the EMEAA charts last week, topping both the physical, digital and combined charts in terms of units sold.
EA Sports' perennially popular football series was also the No.1 game in all three charts in terms of value -- a rare example of one game being the most popular by every single metric measured by the ISFE.
This is the third week in a row that FIFA 20 has been at the top of the combined physical and digital chart (units). Last week, it held off competition from Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint; this week, the only serious competitor was Codemasters' Grid.
The latest entry in the long-running racing series entered the combined chart at No.5 -- the only new entry to make it into the top ten.
The only other game to make it into the combined top 50 was Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible lair, which charted at No.49 despite a strong reception from critics and having Team17 as its publisher.

A bipartisan group of US legislators has authored a letter to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, asking him to reconsider the decision to temporarily ban a professional Hearthstone player for speaking in support of protests in Hong Kong.
The letter, signed by senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), and members of Congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Michael Gallagher (R-WI), and Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), expresses concern over the ban of Chung 'Blitzchung' Ng Wai from professional Hearthstone competitions "in light of the Chinese government's growing appetite for pressuring American business to help stifle free speech."
Although the legislators make reference to Blitzchung forfeiting prize money and being banned for a year, Blizzard said a week ago that it would give him the money after all and reduced the ban to half a year.
"Because your company is such a pillar of the gaming industry, your disappointing decision could have a chilling effect on gamers who seek to use their platform to promote human rights and basic freedoms," one segment of the letter reads. "Indeed, many gamers around the world have taken notice of your company's actions, understandably calling for boycotts of Activision Blizzard gaming sites.
"As China amplifies its campaign of intimidation, you and your company must decide whether to look beyond the bottom line and promote American values--like freedom of speech and thought--or to give in to Beijing's demands in order to preserve market access. We urge you in the strongest terms to reconsider your decision with respect to Mr. Chung. You have the opportunity to reverse course. We urge you to take it."
Blizzard initially banned Ng Wai from competitive Hearthstone for 12 months and stripped him of his Hearthstone Grandmasters prize money earlier this month after he shouted, "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our age!" in a broadcast post-match interview. The company also cut ties with two interviewers on camera at the time.

FIFA 20 has held its No.1 position for a third consecutive week.
EA's game had a lower-than-usual launch as a physical release, but has maintained decent sales since then. It has also performed strong digitally, too. It holds its position despite a 59% drop in sales week-on-week.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint also holds firm at No.2. Ubisoft's game had a disappointing first week as a boxed title, but sales dropped just 56% in its second week -- which is a good second week result for a game with a core audience of fans.
The highest charting new title this week is Grid from Codemasters, which make its debut at No.5. 61% of the game's launch sales came on PS4. Next on the list was Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, from Team17 and Playtonicm, which comes in at No.31. 56% of sales came on Nintendo Switch, with 30% on PS4 and the rest coming on Xbox One.
Finally, PS4 exclusive Concrete Genie comes in at No.35.

The 2010s have offered some of the best video games ever made. The following list below shows the wide range of experiences the increasingly shattered video game space has to offer, from MOBAs to mobile games. You’ll almost definitely disagree with a part of this list, and maybe even have your ideas about what was ‘’best’’, but you’ll agree the 2010s was a good decade for video games. Without some of these video games, the gaming landscape would be like the Michigan Lottery Promo Code with their generous free spins.
1. Fortnite (2017)
You can’t deny Fortnite’s effects on popular culture. The game has become more than just a video game. It’s a place for teens to hang out after school and for the older people to remind themselves of the harsh ruins of time.
2. The Last Of US (2013)
After a massive, stern opening, The Last Of Us tells a genuinely unique post-apocalyptic story. The game is among the few games with a story that matches the best seen in other mediums.
3. Rayman Legends (2013)
Rayman Legends is beautiful and also inventive. It’s a platform game that manages to out-Mario Mario. The game will never age, as it’s as impressive as it was when it was first released in 2013.
4. Nier: Automata (2017)
The game speaks volumes that in a year that gave us Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, Nier: Automata didn’t lose its shine. It’s an extremely smooth action game with glorious soundtracks.
5. League of Legends (2009)
Not all games are an entire industry, but League of Legends. The game was released in 2009, but it’s a living game, and it’s hard to argue that it didn’t dominate in this decade.
6. Gone Home (2013)
Talking of walking sims, Gone Home is a suitable, influential slice of video game storytelling. Without this game, many classic games – Firewatch or What Remains of Edith – don’t exist.
7. Alien: Isolation (2014)
Forget Goldeneye 007, Alien: Isolation is the best movie video game ever. Being pursued around a spaceship by a horrifying alien that retaliate to your every move is one of the most frightening experiences in video game history.
8. Dota 2 (2013)
It’s insanely complicated with a sharp studying curve. In terms of extent and balance, the game is about as good as any combative video game gets. Dota 2 is one of the most-played video games on Steam ever.
9. Outer Wilds (2019)
Outer Wilds is a breathing, living snow globe of a universe that’s continuously thrilling players with its ingenious spaces. Moreover, the game is wrapped in a peculiar puzzle, revealing the secrets of a lost civilization. The game is breathtaking in every sense of the world.
10. Destiny (2014)
It’s not flawless, and it’s a ‘’play it in spite of itself’’ kind of experience, but who can refute the sheer influence of destiny? It may be the most dominant video game in terms of how it helped come up with a new business model; the 10-year game. Moreover, the game is almost too much fun to play with friends.

FIFA 20 continues what's sure to be a long run topping the EMEAA charts, coming in at No. 1 for a second week since launch.
Despite receiving a harsh critical reception, new release Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint enters the charts at No. 2.
The only thing more predictable than FIFA 20 being at No. 1 is Grand Theft Auto V being somewhere in the top ten, and this week Rockstar's eternally popular gangster wonderland finds itself at No. 3.
Although Nintendo doesn't report digital sales figures, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening still arrives in the charts at No. 4 three weeks after release.
Borderlands 3 is down two places this week to come in at No. 5, while Insomniac's Spider-Man makes a surprise appearance, slinging its way from No. 22 to No. 6.
Similarly, Red Dead Redemption II is up from No. 21 to No. 7, and Just Cause 3 has jumped from No. 123 to No. 8.
Rounding out the charts this week are Crash Team Racing at No. 9, and Call of Duty Black: Black Ops IIII which rose from No. 29
