Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is No.1 for a third consecutive week and is the final No.1 of 2019.
It holds off FIFA 20, which remains at No.2, and Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, which retains third position. In fact, the entire Top Five is unchanged, with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe still at No.4 and Luigi's Mansion 3 at No.5.
As the final chart of the year, we can now see that physical game sales for 2019 are down almost 20% compared with 2018.
This week's Top 40 marks an end of an era for the official UK charts, as a new charts supplier will be used in 2020.
GfK (under various names) has been providing for the UK charts for more than two decades, but the charts have faced criticism in recent years as they only track physical sales. This is because boxed game sellers like Amazon, GAME and Argos share their software sales with GfK, but digital game sellers like Xbox Live, Steam and PSN do not.
This has given rise to a new charts project launched by European trade body ISFE called GSD. GSD tracks physical sales and digital sales, although in different ways. Physical sales come directly from the retailers and encompass all games released in a box. Digital sales come directly from the publishers, but not all publishers are taking part (including Bethesda and Nintendo) and therefore not all digital games are counted.
Additionally, the complexity of compiling the GSD chart means that the data takes longer to collate.

Interpret has released its breakdown of the most entertainment brands for 2019 and Mario comes out on top in terms of video games.
The company surveyed 8,893 Americans, and 44% declared themselves to be fans of gaming's most famous plumber, making the Super Mario series the No.1 video game brand of the year.
Nintendo's flagship IP beat Candy Crush (31%) and Resident Evil (30%), with the rest of the Top Ten including (in descending order) Tomb Raider, Sonic The Hedgehog, Grand Theft Auto, Pokémon, Zelda, Call of Duty and Angry Birds.
That means Nintendo holds three of the most popular games brands in the US.
Mario's success will partly be down to long-running loyalty, but there have been plenty of new outings for him in 2019, including Super Mario Maker 2, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Mario Kart Tour, and Dr Mario World -- plus, technically, Luigi's Mansion is based on the Mario franchise.

Parents across Europe are getting more involved in their children's in-game spending activities, according to a new ISFE survey.
The European gaming trade group today released results of a GameTrack survey of European parents with kids 15 or under centered on how they handle in-game spending. Two of the bigger takeaways were that more parents were prohibiting their kids from in-game spending of any kind, and that those who did allow it had existing agreements with their children to guide it.
In the 2019 survey, 36% of parents said they allowed their children to spend money in-game, down from 42% in 2018. As for how much their kids spent in-game, 62% said the monthly average was between €1 and €20. The next most common answer to that question was "I don't know," with 16% of parents unable to pin it down.
The survey also found that 85% of parents reported having an agreement with their children to regulate in-game spending, even if that was just the child having to ask permission to make a purchase. That's up from 79% in the 2018 survey. Asking for permission was the most popular method to control in-game spending, with 58% of parents requiring it. 35% had an agreement to stick to weekly or monthly allowances, while 26% limited spending by only using pre-paid cards.
Interestingly, gaming devices' built-in parental control tools were only used by 21% of parents surveyed. (The 2018 survey found 28% of parents reported using them.) The presence of those tools has been a significant part of the industry's arguments against potential loot box legislation, as well as its response to concerns of video game addiction.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Pokemon Sword, Shield, and the Pokemon double pack vyed for placement on the NPD charts for US dollar sales in November, and when taken separately, Fallen Order managed to win out.
Respawn's story-focused Star Wars title debuted at No.1 in the United States by dollar sales in its launch month of November, coming in under only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which maintained its spot as the best-selling game of 2019 so far. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is now the No.9 best-selling title of 2019 so far, coming in under Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (which is now the best-selling fighting game in US history) and above Anthem.
Pokemon Sword, the Pokemon Sword and Shield Double Pack, and Pokemon Shield took spots No.3, 4, and 5 respectively, though according to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, if the three titles were combined they would have ended up collectively at No.2 for the month. And that's not including digital sales. They also collectively saw the highest launch month dollar sales of any Pokemon release in US history.
For other categories, the waning console generation trends continued to bring total game spending for the month to $2.3 billion, down 19% year-over-year. Hardware spending was down 26% year-over-year to $891 million, with the Nintendo Switch remaining the best-selling console for the month and the year so far. Accessory and game card spending was down 14% to $433 million, with the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 leading accessory sales.

December 16th, 2019, 21:59 Posted By: wraggster
No new major releases last week means few changes once again on the EMEAA unit sales charts, with five of last week's top 10 retaining their spots from last week.
Two of those were FIFA 20 at No.1 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at No.2. This is FIFA 20's second week in a row in the No.1 spot, and its sixth week at the top since its launch.
Most of the upward unit sales movement in the top 10 came from Nintendo Switch titles, with Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and other lower-ranked games such as Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 (No. 19 last week to No.11 this week), Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition (No.17 to No.13), Ring Fit Adventure(No.26 to No.14), and Super Mario Party (No.40 to No.15) making significant leaps, possibly due to residual Cyber Monday and other holiday deals sneaking into the following week.
Looking at digital-only sales, Life is Strange 2: Episode 5 debuted at No.4 under Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and above Tekken 7 (which lept from No.60 the previous week to No.5 last week). Digital sales alone did not manage to get it into the top 50 combined sales charts for the region, though.

December 16th, 2019, 21:57 Posted By: wraggster
We are one week away from crowing 2019's Christmas No.1, and currently Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is in prime position.
Activision's shooter returns to the summit of the UK physical charts despite a 10% drop in sales week-on-week. The title replaces FIFA 20, which falls to No.3 after sales slipped 41% over the previous week.
Call of Duty was just 3,000 sales ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which is at No.2. The licensed EA game is probably benefitting from the excitement around the upcoming Star Wars movie -- The Rise of Skywalker. Sales for the game rose 30% week-on-week, and if it manages a similar feat next week (not unthinkable with the release of the movie), it might be a rare moment where neither Call of Duty or FIFA takes home the Christmas crown.
As an outside bet for Christmas No.1 there is Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, which has enjoyed a very strong December following the launch of a special Nintendo Switch bundle. However, week-on-week sales are down 30%, so it would be a surprise if the perennial seller manages to knock out FIFA, Star Wars or Call of Duty.
Mario Kart is currently at No.4 and is just holding off its friendly rival Luigi's Mansion 3, with just 2,000 boxed units separating the two games this week (Luigi's sales were up 49% week-on-week). Luigi's Mansion 3 has been a real hit for Nintendo this Christmas. Although it doesn't match the sales of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the puzzle adventure game has far exceeded previous games in the franchise, and has sold more copies than other popular Switch games this year - including New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Super Mario Maker 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Another success this Christmas has been Just Dance 2020 (which currently resides at No.7). For its first six weeks on sale, this year's Just Dance has more than doubled sales of last year's entry (physical sales only). Sales of the Wii version are down year-on-year, but the game has sold better on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch (particularly Nintendo Switch).

Mobile game spending in the US reached an estimated $69.7 million on Black Friday last week, achieving a new record for the most revenue brought in over a single day across the App Store and Google Play for the region.
Sensor Tower reports that combined revenue for both stores was up 25% over Black Friday last year, which is also the largest year-over-year increase for mobile spending on Black Friday since a 35.4% growth between 2015 and 2016. 60% of total spending this year was in the App Store.
Marvel Contest of Champions topped the revenue charts both overall and in the App Store (it was No.4 on Google Play) thanks to numerous Black Friday sales within the game that brought in approximately $2.7 million total. Coin Master was No.1 on Google Play, and No.3 overall.
Sensor Tower also offered a specific total for Playrix's Gardenscapes, which came in at No.7 overall and generated $1 million. Homescapes, also by Playrix, reached No.9 and brought in $969,000 for the day.

With no new major releases last week, it was a quiet week in terms of movement on the EMEAA charts that saw FIFA 20 find room to move back to the top.
FIFA 20 originally saw a whopping four weeks in a row in the No.1 spot after its launch before it was finally dethroned by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare during its launch. Call of Duty edged into No.2 last week right under it.
Last week's No.1, Football Manager 2020, was nowhere to be seen on the combined unit sales charts. It managed to sneak in way down at No.37 on the digital sales charts, indicating a steep drop-off from its launch last week.
Pokemon Sword and Shield remain in the top 10 and No.4 and No.8 respectively, with Pokemon Sword actually rising a spot from last week -- indicating that Pokemon sales are remaining sturdy through the holiday month. Two other Nintendo staples, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, also stuck around for another week near the top.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is also enjoying ongoing attention given its launch near holiday sales weeks, dropping only from No.2 last week to No.5 this week.
For digital sales alone, the rankings are mostly the usual suspects with Grand Theft Auto V. returning to No.1 this week and FIFA 20 waiting right behind it at No.2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is unsurprisingly at No.3.

Streaming platforms such as Google Stadia are set to be game changers in the coming years, especially when combined with subscription-based, flat-rate business models. For developers and publishers, they are yet another way to bring games to a bigger audience. But they also bring new legal issues, especially those relating to licensing agreements. In this article, I will be highlighting some of the more important points.
[h=2]Scope of the IP license[/h]First and foremost, the scope of the license might need to be revisited. Publishers licensing a game from a developer, for example, will want to make sure the scope of the license covers streaming and related business models. In the case that the contract provides for a "rights buyout," publishers seem to be covered -- but many legal systems, especially continental European legal systems, do not allow for a "buyout" of copyright. Which means that a publisher using a "buyout" clause when contracting with a developer in such a country might end up without sufficient rights.
This also means that any license agreements drafted for legal systems in which a "buyout" is not possible typically have a long list of the rights that are granted, often in an annex -- will "streaming" be among the permitted uses in such an annex?

Football Manager 2020 is enjoying a strong launch week in the charts, beating out all the latest big releases to arrive in the top spot.
It has not been a week of surprises in the EMEAA combined digital and retail charts, with all the Q4 2019 big-hitters making an appearance as we enter the holiday season.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order holds fast at No. 2 in its second week, while Call of Duty hops a spot into No. 3.
FIFA continues its reign as an ever present force in the charts at No. 5, nearly two months after release.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield still hold a firm grasp despite Nintendo's refusal to publish digital sales figures, placing at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively,
Grand Theft Auto V, having taken up permanent residence in the top ten, is up three spots to No. 7.
Meanwhile Luigi's Mansion 3 and Need for Speed: Heat continue to enjoy solid success, placing at No. 8 and No. 9.
While not a permanent fixture of the top ten, Rainbow Six Siege does return with remarkable frequency, and this week finds itself at No. 10, having climbed from No. 26.

EA, Activision, Microsoft and Nintendo were the big Black Friday winners at UK games retail.
1.3 million physical games were sold during the build-up to Black Friday and through to the Saturday, which is actually 21% lower than the same period last year. However, last year did benefit from a few bigger releases during Christmas, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Battlefield V (the latter being released during Black Friday itself).
The most popular console in terms of game sales (we haven't received any hardware indication yet) was PS4, with just shy of 500,000 games sold during the week (down 29% compared to the same period last year). This is followed relatively closely by Xbox One with 417,176 games sold for that platform (down 30.6%). In third place comes Nintendo Switch with 364,675 games sold last week (up 37.9% compared with Black Friday 2018).
This year, EA has come out top of the charts with FIFA 20 the best-selling game of the week (just as FIFA 19 was the year prior). The game also benefitted from being bundled with PS4, which was discounted during the week. FIFA 20 sales rose 259% week-on-week.
Also bundled with PS4 consoles was Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which comes in at No.2 (sales up 109%). Meanwhile Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (which was also bundled with Xbox One hardware) drops one place to No.3 - however, sales of that game also increased 38% week-on-week.
Hardware bundles played a major part in the Black Friday charts and it's most explicit at No.4 where you will find Sea of Thieves - an Xbox One game that launched in March 2018. Sea of Thieves was included in all variety of bundles for the Xbox One S All-Digital console. which was on sale for between Ł110 to Ł140 during Black Friday (arguably the most aggressive hardware offer last week). Minecraft was also included in those Xbox One S bundles and that game is at No.5 (just under 500 units behind Sea of Thieves).
Nintendo has four titles in the Top Ten: Pokémon Sword (No.6), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (No.7), Pokémon Shield (No.8) and Luigi's Mansion 3 (No.9). All of those games benefitted from Black Friday bundles and discounts, with Sword leading sales for the new Pokémon Games. This edition saw sales rise by 6% week-on-week, while Shield's dipped by just 1%. The latter was the only game in the entire Top 40 to drop in sales week-on-week.
Sticking with bundled software, PlayStation was aggressive with sales around its VR headset once again (as promised by PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan), and thus games for this device returned to the charts. PlayStation VR Worlds (No.14), Astro Bot Rescue Mission (No.18), Skyrim VR (No.20), Resident Evil 7 (No.23) and Everybody's Golf VR (No.25) are all back in the Top 40.
Speaking of returning software, Marvel's Spider-Man swings in at No.10 thanks to a 968% sales improvement, Borderlands 3 is back at No.31 after a 404% sales jump and Anthem is at No.33 due to a 248% sales increase. Even games that dropped heavily down the charts such as Death Stranding (plummeting from No.13 to No.31), Fortnite (tumbling from No.10 to No.24), Grand Theft Auto V (falling from No.19 to No.32), and Ring Fit Adventure (down from No.15 to No.29) rose in sales significantly week-on-week.
Unsurprisingly, last week's new releases Shenmue III and Football Manager 2020 are absent from the Top 40 this week.

YouTube Gaming has lightened its restrictions on video game violence to be in line with its other policies surrounding scripted or simulated content, opting to avoid age gates for a wider swath of violent game content.
In support post from YouTube Gaming, it was announced that beginning today, "scripted or simulated violent content" coming from video games would be handled just like the same content from other forms of media, such as film or TV. According to YouTube, this specifically means:
- Future gaming uploads that include scripted or simulated violence may be approved instead of being age-restricted.
- There will be fewer restrictions for violence in gaming, but this policy will still maintain our high bar to protect audiences from real-world violence.
- We may still age-restrict content if violent or gory imagery is the sole focus of the video. For instance, if the video focuses entirely on the most graphically violent part of a video game.
YouTube has a more specific list of violence restrictions and prohibitions in its policies that outline the kinds of violence, gore, and graphic content that can be age-gated or removed, with gentler rules for instances where the content is contextualized in some way.
Finally, the update noted that this change does not affect its advertiser guidelines or how videos are monetized.

Black Friday digital gaming sales reached a record high this year according to SuperData, hitting a total of $4.36 billion from Black Friday through Cyber Monday.
SuperData shares that digital spending for the shopping weekend rose 9% year-over-year thanks to major game releases such as Death Stranding and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare as well as to in-game content deals and major digital sales on digital storefronts.
Free-to-play games accounted for much of this total, bringing in $3.3 billion in in-game spending total, up 13% year-over-year. Premium PC content brought in $300 million.
Though it accounted for a good chunk of the holiday revenue, SuperData adds that in the US, in-game spending made up 79% of all digital games revenue in 2018, a percentage that is expected to remain relatively steady in 2019. However, digital spending overall is expected to continue to grow, and SuperData predicts that with the advent of new subscription services like Google Stadia and ongoing ones like Xbox Game Pass, digital games subscription revenue will rise 47% from 2019 to 2020, reaching $1.15 billion next year.

Dutch football manager Marco van Basten has been removed from FIFA 20 "until further notice."
Players who log in will receive a message from EA, shared by Twinfinite, explaining that van Basten is also no longer available in FIFA Ultimate Team packs, FUT drafts or squad building challenges.
The removal is in response to comments the former Netherlands striker made while worked as an analyst for the Dutch branch of Fox Sports. In an interview with a German coach, van Basten said, "Sieg Heil."
While literally translating to "Hail Victory," the phrase is known for its use at Nazi rallies.

Outside of Google, Xbox and PlayStation, there is another huge company company taking major strides in the game streaming space.
EA's Project Atlas began testing in September, with FIFA 19, Need for Speed Rivals, Titanfall 2 and Unravel available to play across numerous devices. It is yet another platform to sit alongside Stadia, xCloud and PlayStation Now, which is why it was surprising to see EA's chief technology officer Ken Moss at Microsoft's X019 event to announce that several more EA titles will be coming to xCloud.
"We definitely do not see it that [we're competitors]," Moss tells GamesIndustry.biz. "That is really not our goal. We haven't announced exact next steps on what we're doing with ours. We are pushing it, but I view it as actually part of our strategy -- bringing our games out to the cloud and taking the learnings back to our studios, giving us the information on how we need to evolve our core platforms like Frostbite and our services platform and AI. That's what we are doing. We're not at all interested in competing on platforms."
<figure class="small">Moss is a lifelong gamer, but has spent much of his career at major organisations such as Microsoft and eBay on non-games projects. However, the allure of the cloud drew him to the games business.
</figure>"I've seen it transform so many things and the opportunity in games is incredibly exciting and not really achieved yet," he says. "I truly believe that these forces -- cloud and AI -- will change just about everything in games. It's going to be a five or ten year journey for us, but I say that confidently. I don't even think that's a bold prediction.

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is back at No.1 in the UK physical charts despite a 16% drop in sales week-on-week.
The shooter replaces Pokémon Sword, which dropped 58% in sales and falls to No.3 (Pokémon Sword drops 65% in sales, and goes from No.3 to No.5). It's a pretty good second week for the Pokémon duo, as the last major Pokémon games -- Sun and Moon -- dropped by more than 70% in their second week.\
Of course, Call of Duty is available on multiple formats. In terms of single formats, Pokémon Sword is No.1 ahead of the PS4 version of Modern Warfare.
It was a very strong week for Nintendo Switch. Following a series of pre-Black Friday deals across retail, Switch hardware received a significant boost and so did its software. Luigi's Mansion 3 is still at No.6 after an 11% rise in sales, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe is back at No.7 with a 26% rise in sales, Minecraft on Switch is at No.8 with a 43% sales boost, while Mario & Sonic At The Tokyo Games its at No.8 after a 4% sales uptick (the game has been out three weeks, and has seen sales increase each and every week so far, a rare feat for any game in the boxed charts).
That's six Switch exclusives in the Top Ten, with a further eight throughout the rest of the Top 40. Super Mario Party (No.37), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (No.32), New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (No.30), Super Mario Odyssey (No.29) Super Smash Bros Ultimate (No.27), Super Mario Maker (N0.20) and Ring Fit Adventure (No.15) all rose in sales week-on-week, too.
Another big success this week is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The game has held its second position after a strong second week, where boxed sales were down just 47%.
Perhaps not so successful is the release of Shenmue III. The follow-up to the Dreamcast classics comes in at No.17. Only released on PS4, the new release sold a little more than half of last year's Shenmue I and II remaster (PS4 sales only). However, the numbers for this game have been skewed by the fact almost 70,000 gamers backed the title via Kickstarter.
The game debuts a place below this year's Football Manager 2020. As a PC title, the majority of sales for the Sports Interactive game will have come from digital downloads (which are not included here). It's the first game in the series to be released in a box using new eco-friendly packaging.

Russia is projected to become the third-largest European market this year, growing 57% to surpass France in terms of overall revenue.
That's according to a joint report published by SuperData and Wargaming, which examines the games industry in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Currently Russia is the fourth-biggest video game market in Europe, contributing 8% ($1.7 billion) of revenue in 2018.
As the current console generation draws to a close, there is a projected decline in market activity across Europe.
Despite this, the Russian game market is expected to grow by 57%, thanks primarily mobile which saw a 51% increase from 2017 to 2018, grossing $561 million.
PC gaming remains the most popular platform in Russia however. Last year, there was an average of 79 million monthly active PC users; this figure is set to grow by 3% in 2019.

The latest entry to the Pokémon franchise has taken up three spots in the top ten of the EMEAA charts this week.
Despite Nintendo not reporting digital sales figures, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are No. 1 and No. 3 respesctively, while a special pack including both games ranks at No. 9.
Yesterday The Pokémon Company revealed that Pokéon Sword and Shield have becoming the fastest-selling games to date on the Switch, shifting six million units during the first week.
Meanwhile, combined digital and retail sales saw Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order arrived at No. 2 this week.
Record-breaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been knocked off the top spot after just one week, and currently sits at No. 4.
FIFA 20 still enjoys a solid position in the charts over a month since launch, ranking at No. 5 while Death Stranding has fallen from an opening week position of No. 2 to No. 6 this week.
Grand Theft Auto V is the only game not released within the last two months to appear in the charts, down a few spots from the week prior, to rank No. 10.

Pokémon Sword and Shield have enjoyed a strong opening weekend in the UK boxed charts.
Pokémon Sword alone is the UK No.1, and the biggest exclusive game of the year. In fact, Pokémon Sword is the third biggest boxed game launch of 2019, behind FIFA 20 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (which were released on multiple platforms).
Pokémon Shield comes in at No.3. To confuse matters, the double pack -- Pokémon Sword and Shield: Dual Edition -- is listed separately, and arrives at No.7. For the sake of the following analysis, we are going to combine the sales of the three listings (Sword, Shield and Dual Edition). However, as the 'Dual Edition' is a bundle of both Sword and Shield, we are putting in brackets what the numbers would be if you counted this version as double (as it includes both games).
Combined together, the titles have secured the second biggest launch for Pokémon games in UK history, having sold 33% (or 43%) more units than 2010's Black and White on Nintendo DS. The new games have also sold 53% (or 64.6%) more units at launch than last year's Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee, which were also released on Nintendo Switch.
However, they could not topple the success of Pokémon Sun and Moon. Sun and Moon were released during the Pokémon Go phenomenon of 2016 and together they represent the biggest Nintendo launch in the UK (ever). Compared to those 3DS games, Sword and Shield's debut sales are 39% (or 34.5%) lower.
It's worth noting that the UK charts run from Sunday to Saturday, and Sun and Moon launched on a Wednesday -- so had two extra days of sales compared to Sword and Shield (which launched on Friday). In addition, digital downloads (which have been increasing for Nintendo) are not included in this sales data. Sun and Moon were also released during a more positive period for the IP, with Sword and Shield having been subject to criticism from some fans during the pre-launch campaign.
In between the Pokémon releases is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at No.2. It's a very strong opening for EA's new Star Wars adventure, and it's the fourth biggest boxed game launch of the year so far.
Sales are 33% lower than the last big EA Star Wars game - Star Wars: Battlefront II, which was released in November 2017. However, EA has stated it doesn't have the same level of expectation for this title, as it's a story-driven adventure, rather than a multiplayer shooter. Furthermore, digital sales are not included.
The PS4 version of Fallen Order accounted for 66% of sales, with the Xbox One edition making up the 34% remainder.
The only other new game in the Top 40 is Terminator Resistance at No.38.
Last week's big release was Death Stranding for PS4. The Hideo Kojima game suffers a sizeable drop in its second week on sale, falling 71% in sales. The game therefore drops from No.2 to No.8.
Need for Speed: Heat, which debuted at No.5 last week, drops 38% in sales and falls to No.11. Meanwhile, Mario & Sonic At The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games actually rose in sales during its second week (sales up 12%), however the game still falls from No.8 to No.10.
With Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.9 and Luigi's Mansion 3 at No.6, there are six Nintendo Switch exclusives in the Top Ten.
