Total War: Three Kingdoms was comfortably the best-selling download game in the UK for the week ending May 26th.
The first ever weekly UK digital charts have started to arrive, and it reveals that Total War would actually have been the real No.1 for that week. Previously, based on physical data, we reported that Team Sonic Racing was that week's No.1 game. However, by comparing the two reports, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal that Total War was actually the better seller.
The digital chart looks quite different to its physical counterpart. Titles such as GTA V (No.2) and Minecraft (No.4) perform even better in these charts, and regularly appear in the Top Five (they were No.1 and No.2 the week prior to this one). Meanwhile, discounting can have a significant impact upon the Top Ten. For instance, Cities: Skylines finds itself rising to No.6 from No.94 thanks to some price activity.
Elsewhere, titles like Monopoly Plus and Uno from Ubisoft are in the Top Ten.
In terms of new digital releases, Team Sonic Racing made No.13 (although it's worth noting that Nintendo digital data currently doesn't feature in the GSD charts), just ahead of Everybody's Golf VR at No.14.
The GSD chart is created from data supplied directly from publishers and developers, whereas the GfK chart (which covers the physical market) is created from data supplied directly from retailers. GfK's chart typically arrives on Monday, whereas the GSD data takes longer to compile.

The Trump administration's escalating trade dispute with China could have a significant impact on gaming in the near future. As reported by Game Daily, the Office of the United States Trade Representative has proposed a tariff of up to 25% on a wide array of products imported from China.
The US has been raising tariffs on Chinese goods in waves since the middle of last year. The newly proposed product list is the largest yet, representing an approximate annual trade value of $300 billion. (Tariffs on a $200 billion group of goods were raised earlier this month.) The USTR says it covers "essentially all" products not already covered by previous tariffs, apart from a select few categories like pharmaceuticals, medical goods, and rare earth minerals.
The extensive list of affected product categories includes video game consoles, game controllers, and coin-op arcade games.
The USTR has invited comments from the public in regards to the proposed tariffs and set a deadline of June 17 for those to be considered before action is taken.

The 194 members of the World Health Organization have recognised 'gaming disorder' as an illness at the 72nd World Health Assembly today.
The WHO finalised the eleventh revision of its International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) in June last year, which included gaming disorder. The disorder is described as: 'a pattern of behaviour characterised by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences'.
The WHO stated at that time that: "For gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must be of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months."
The illness was met with opposition by the global video games trade bodies, including the ESA, ISFE and UKIE, which highlighted contradictory research and statements on the subject. The argument from the trade bodies and its members was that more research needed to be done, and that gaming disorder was perhaps a symptom of a more serious underlying mental health issues.
The ESA went further, stating that the good video games do economically, creatively, politically, and in terms of education, health and a whole lot more, is put at risk by the the WHO's classification.
Despite the opposition, ICD-11 was agreed to be adopted at the World Health Assembly today. It will come into effect on January 1, 2022. The WHO says that the decision to include gaming disorder was based on reviews of available evidence and reflected the consensus of experts from different disciplines and regions.

Sumo Digital's Sonic the Hedgehog kart racing series had been in the garage for seven years before last week's launch of Team Sonic Racing, but the time off seems to have served the franchise well.
According to the UK Boxed Charts report for the week ending May 25th, Team Sonic Racing toped the All Formats Chart, more than doubling the launch week sales of its predecessor, 2012's Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. In fact, this is the first time a Sonic the Hedgehog game has topped the charts since Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games managed that feat in 2008. As for where the game did best, the PlayStation 4 version narrowly outsold the Switch version.
The only other new release in the top 40 was Everybody's Golf VR for PS4, which ranked 22 on the charts. However, Assassin's Creed III Remastered (already out on Xbox One and PS4) did see the debut of a Nintendo Switch version, which helped propel the game to the 15th spot on the charts.

Mortal Kombat 11 is the second best-selling game of 2019 in the US, according to data from NPD, after a strong April debut in which it was the top-selling game on every platform.
The latest in NetherRealm's long-running series topped NPD's software charts for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch. It is the first third-party published game to top the monthly chart on Nintendo Switch since the launch of Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle in September 2017.
The PS4 exclusive Days Gone also had a strong debut month -- the seventh highest ever for a game published by Sony, but it wasn't enough to finish ahead of Mortal Kombat. It is also surpassed any previous Sony Bend game, despite only launching worldwide on April 26.
The third biggest game of April in the US was another strong performer: MLB The Show 19, which had the fastest start of any game in the series' history, and is already the best-selling sports title of the year.
As a result, dollar sales of video game software spiked 15% compared to April 2018, reaching $427 million overall.
The total spend on hardware showed the opposite trend, falling 29% year-on-year to $160 million. The only platform that grew over April 2018 was the Nintendo Switch, which was the best-selling platform overall in both unit and dollar sales.

Bethesda's Rage 2 has ended Days Gone's three week stint at the top of the UK Boxed Charts.
Despite charting a place higher than the first game (Rage launched the week after FIFA 12 back in October 2011), the sequel hasn't come close to matching the original. In fact, Rage 2 physical sales are just a quarter of what the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game manage.
Of course, digital has grown significantly since 2011. GSD data suggests that digital downloading can account for up to 50% of console sales in the UK. If that's the case in this instance, that would still means Rage 2 has sold half of what its original managed during the same time period. Note: Bethesda is one of the few major games publishers that refuses to share digital sales figures.
The game sold best on PS4, accounting for 57% of sales, followed by Xbox One on 38%. PC accounted for 5%, although the majority of PC sales will have come via Steam.
It continues to be a weak physical games market, which does mean some more unusual games are managing to score decent chart positions. A Plague's Tale: Innocence from Asobo Studios and Focus Home Interactive manages to reach No.9.
The only other new game in the Top 40 is the remastered version of Sniper Elite Version 2, which makes No.13 - just 100 units from reaching the Top Ten. The game sold best on PS4 (49% of sales), followed by Xbox One (30%) and then Nintendo Switch (21%).

Games Workshop is a British war game firm based in Nottingham. It is has published several games such as The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, Warhammer Age of Sigmar and tabletop wargames. Recently, Games Workshop opened several Facebook pages including Forge World. The company offers a fair promo code when you play any of its online games. This post high discusses Games Workshop in the 21st century.
Warhammer
Warhammer is an idea that was maintained in a decent building in Britain for a while. Most people didn't understand it well during its conception stage. Sex Education, the latest high school program features a character known as Warhammer Tom. Stewart Lee and his son are one of the character's ardent fans. The community perceives Warhammer Tom to be a bearded person who likes wearing baggy T-shirts in miniature-filled cellars.Last year, Games Workshop made remarkable growth and profit despite the pending Brexit. It designed and produced its products in Nottingham thus being a leading exporter of British fantasy and Sci-Fi such as Stars ship and Warcraft.
Games Workshop's Latest War Games
Over the past year, the wargaming company has produced 16 war video games. Its tabletop game is available in most stores. Each war game has its PC version. Games Workshop is gradually benefiting from the gaming industry and tabletop games such as Age of Sigmar, Gladius, and Champions to Vermintide. In the past, the company rarely applied its IPs in gaming.Tom Kirby was the CEO when Games Workshop underwent tough times. He maintained the firm's security and financial statements. The gaming firm replaced Warhammer with Age of Sigmar in a rocky transition. Its developers minimized its bloated areas to eliminate the point-by-model. It encouraged players to indulge more in storytelling.A lot of arcane has accumulated in Warhammer. Tom introduced new rules such as offering bonuses to bearded people or those with funny voices. Such regulations adversely affected the fan base hence prompting some people to sell their collection. Also, the video destroys your speakers when you increase its volume.Kevin Rountree replaced Tom Kirby as the CEO. He caused drastic changes in the firm including an increase in its profits. Kevin eliminated the Black Box sensation that was predominant since 1990.Games Workshop has produced several war games in the past including Total Warhammer. It preserves the digital form of the world. The firm created the Regimental Standard, a WordPress blog to market its brands. It is likely to engage its community in the near future.

Newzoo has released new research that shows women make up almost half of all gamers, as well as offering some insight into how they engage with the medium.
The study broke down gamers of all types into eight distinct personalities based on their preferences and how much time they dedicate to gaming. This was developed by researching consumer habits from 30 markets around the world.
46% of the people spread across the eight gamer types were found to be female, amounting to more than one billion.
The most common type of female game is what Newzoo refers to as the 'time filler' -- people who play games to pass the time, most likely on mobile. 36% of all women in the study came under this category, compared to 19% of men. In fact, women account for almost two thirds of all 'time fillers.'
17% of women were considered 'cloud gamers', making this the second biggest category for the gender. According to Newzoo, 'cloud gamers' prefer high-quality games -- especially if free-to-play or heavily discounted -- and only spend on hardware when necessary. This is the group most likely to benefit from the likes of Google Stadia and Microsoft's Project xCloud.

When it comes to high-selling video game systems, what pops up in most people's minds are likely the PlayStation 2, the Nintendo DS, and of course, the Nintendo Wii. Now that the most recent financial results have been reported, we can see that Sony's PlayStation 4 is closing in on 100 million units sold, with the PS4 selling a grand total of 96.8 million since the system's launch in 2013. 17.8 mil PlayStation 4s were shipped throughout all of 2018, showing a slight decline in sales compared to last year as it reaches the end of its lifespan, while hype begins to build for the upcoming "PlayStation 5". As of April 2019, the PlayStation 4 is the sixth highest selling video game console of all time, sitting just below the Nintendo Wii's 101.6 million, and above its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, which reached 87.4 million. Sony's company analysts project that around 16 million more PS4s will be sold within 2019, and if that expectation is managed, then that'll put the PlayStation 4 above both the PS1 and the Wii, in terms of sales.
Do you expect the PlayStation 4 to surpass the Nintendo Wii's total sales? With such a successful console on their hands, Sony has a lot to live up to, as they plan for the future and their next home console.

In another far too quiet week for the UK retail charts, the top four entries headed up by Days Gone stayed exactly where they were last week.
With no new releases or major sales to bump titles up or down, Days Gone remained at No.1 with a 60% decline in sales week-over-week. Mortal Kombat 11 came in behind it at No.2, seeing a 74% drop from last week.

Following a series of meetings culminating in a recent Berlin summit, 12 countries have agreed to establish a European Esports Federation this year that will serve as a "moderating partner" rather than a governing body for the industry.
The federation members have compiled "The Berlin Declaration" that includes a collective, agreed-upon definition of what esports consist of, though a source speaking to Esports Observer says that the document hasn't yet been signed. Still, it is supported by the founding members of the federation, and reportedly states that the body will be a non-profit independent of third-parties or private entities.
The twelve countries included so far are the UK, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, France, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia, Sweden, Turkey, and Ukraine. Also in attendance at the Berlin meeting were The Interactive Software Federation of Europe, the German Games Industry Association, ESL, StarLadder, and Freaks 4U Gaming.

Tom Clancy's The Division 2 debuted well on the UK Charts, and it seems to have seen similar chart-topping success in the US as the No.1 game for March across both physical and digital sales.
The NPD Group's report (with analysis courtesy of Mat Piscatella) reveals that US spending on hardware, software, accessories and game cards reached $1.2 billion for the month of March, down 11% year-over-year thanks to decreases in all four segments. For the first quarter (January through March), total spending dropped 2% year-over-year to $3.2 billion, with hardware spending seeing declines (down 13%) that trumped gains in the other two segments (both up 2%).
Hardware's drop was the most dramatic in March alone as well, down 15% year-over-year to $282 million. The Nintendo Switch kicked off the year with strength despite the overall hardware drops, becoming the best-selling title both for March and for the quarter in both units and dollars.
Accessories and game cards saw a 7% drop year-over-year for March, down to $349 million.
As for software, it was down 11% year-over-year to $547 million across console, portable, and PC games, physical and digital, that are tracked by NPD. Following Tom Clancy's The Division 2 at No.1 for March was Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice at No.2, which seems to have beaten launch month sales of its FromSoftware predecessor Dark Souls III in worldwide digital sales but didn't quite manage the same feat in US-only physical and digital sales - though PC digital sales are not included in the NPD data.

Sony's Days Gone comfortably beat Mortal Kombat 11 in the UK boxed games charts.
Its launch week physical sales are 27% lower than last year's PS4 exclusive action adventure God of War. It is actually a decent performance when you consider this is a new IP - and the review scores for this new game have not been as impressive as last year's multi-award winning effort.
Mortal Kombat 11 had to settle for No.2 as a result. The game's debut performance is 43.6% smaller than 2015's Mortal Kombat X (note: digital sales are not included, and download sales have improved significantly over the last four years). However, sales are slightly up over 2017's Injustice 2, which is another beat 'em up developed by NetherRealm featuring DC characters.
Mortal Kombat 11 sold best on PS4, with 71% of sales coming on Sony's platform.

UK trade body UKIE, as part of its 30 Years of Play campaign, handed out numerous awards to games that have sold over 1m copies in the UK.
This is according to boxed sales information provided by data specialist GfK. No digital data is tracked.
The list only contains games to have sold 1m copies on an individual platform. This means that games that have sold over 1m copies across multiple formats (like Fallout 4, for instance) do not make the cut. Whereas Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold 1m copies on four different formats, makes the list four times.
Unsurprisingly, Nintendo, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto and FIFA titles make up the bulk of the list. Notable exceptions are the first two Just Dance games, Zumba Fitness, The Simpson: Hit and Run and Red Dead Redemption 2. Two big Microsoft exclusives - Minecraft and Halo 3 - also make the list.

A long time in the making as this issue needed extensive restoration before I felt happy with how to present it, this time we jump to November of 1996 with issue 180 of Computer & Video Games.
We start of with a bang as we look at the 5/5 review for one of my favourite racing games of all time: WipEout 2097 by by Psygnosis for the PSone. Then we look at the incredible Sega Saturn fighter by AM#2: Fighting Vipers. Afterwards we look at the cover story: the review for Crash Bandicoot on the PSone. And finally we look at another 5/5 review for the Sega Saturn Worldwide Soccer '97.
But that's not all. We also take a journey to Japan. Tokyo to be more precise. To visit the 1996 Tokyo Game Show.
Enjoy!

This week's policy change by Sony to allow people who have purchased pre-orders to get a refund any time up to two weeks after launch (as long as they haven't downloaded or streamed the game) seems like a pretty minor, common-sense sort of change. It's what might get called a "quality of life" fix in a set of patch notes. It's a small thing, but it's nice to know you can cancel your pre-order if someone gifts you the game or it turns out you won't be able to play it at launch for some reason anyway, right? Hardly worth discussing.
If this is a small thing, though, why did it take national authorities in Europe threatening enforcement of EU consumer law to get Sony (and previously Valve) to come in line? Why is Nintendo actually fighting a court battle over this in Germany? If refunding pre-orders is the minor issue it appears on the surface, why has the industry had to be dragged kicking and screaming to this point?

April 11th, 2019, 18:38 Posted By: wraggster
The European Union Commission has informed six major video game companies that they may be in violation of EU competition rules.
It is the Commission's "preliminary view" that Valve, Bandai Namco, Capcom, Focus Home, Koch Media, and ZeniMax prevented consumers from purchasing games cross-border from other EU member states.
In a statement released today, the Commission suggested that Valve entered bilateral agreements with the publishers to geo-block their games.
If the companies are found in violation, the Commission can issue a fine worth up to 10% of their annual worldwide turnover.
However, the Statement of Objections is just the Commission's first step to investing suspected violations.
Once the concerned parties have been informed, they are able to examine the Commission's investigation file, reply in writing, and request an oral hearing to present their comments on the case before the Commission and national competition authorities.
"In a true digital single market, European consumers should have the right to buy and play video games of their choice regardless of where they live in the EU," said commissioner in charge of competition policy, Margrethe Vestager.
"Consumers should not be prevented from shopping around between member states to find the best available deal. Valve and the five PC video game publishers now have the chance to respond to our concerns."
In a public statement, Koch Media claimed the proceedings date back to business performed before 2015.
"Koch Media will monitor the process closely and is fully committed to comply with all rules and regulations," it added.
