Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski doesn't see much disruption or innovation coming from consoles and AAA titles
The new consoles from Sony and Microsoft are now only a little over a month away. While much of the industry is gearing up for the arrival of these next-gen systems, there are plenty who are less enthusiastic about what the platforms mean for next-gen gaming. You can count former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski in that camp.
When asked by the [a]list daily what he thinks will define the next-gen era of games, Bleszinski gave an answer that was decidedly in a direction away from consoles. "Things like the Steam Box and the Oculus Rift, honestly. I'm friends with a lot of folks in Microsoft. Microsoft has been very good to me throughout my career. I'm friends with the folks at Sony. But when I think about my gamer instincts and where I'm going to see a lot of the most disruptive and innovative gaming I don't see it in the $250 million budgeted game that cost $100 million to market. Because when you have that high of a budget the amount of risk being taken decreases exponentially," he said.
"I was more excited about playing games like Gone Home than any console release. I am thoroughly excited to dive into Grand Theft Auto V, but it's sitting on my desk looking like War and Peace to me right now. I'm going to have to clear out a good two weeks of doing nothing in order to just deep dive into it. In the meantime I'm on my Nintendo DS and I'm on my laptop playing Steam games. I got to fire up Two Brothers and I finished Thomas Was Alone and Gone Home. I don't know if it's because I'm rubber banding and rebelling against my AAA background, but I will buy a Playstation 4 and an Xbox One. Am I more excited for that than the Rift and Steam? I think Sony and Microsoft are going to do just fine and it's a known entity. A known entity is not that exciting to me. It's the disruptive things that are exciting to me."
Bleszinski is confident that Oculus Rift can become a solid platform, but it needs games designed specifically for its VR interface and not just some console ports. "They know what they're doing over there (at Oculus) and I think Rift could eventually be its own platform. Putting Team Fortress 2 and Half Life on it is a mistake. The experiences that are going to be the best ones are the ones that are custom made for the pacing of that kind of experience. I got more excited by the trailer for EVE Valkyrie on the Rift than anything I saw at E3 this year," he commented.

Anybody can fire up an emulator and play arcade games of yesteryear, but if you want to capture more of the nostalgia, you should build a custom arcade control panel. [Quinn] started her build by narrowing down which games she was most interested in playing, and decided on a straightforward 2-player setup. The biggest challenge was finding joysticks that would allow for switchable 4-way or 8-way control: some games such as Ms. Pac Man were made for 4-way joystick input, and the added positions on a 8-way can lead to confused inputs and frustrated players.
[Quinn] found the solution with a pair of Ultimarc Servo Stik joysticks, which use a servo motor to swap between 4 and 8-way mode. The output from both the joysticks and the buttons feed into an iPac encoder, which converts the signal to emulate a USB keyboard. The panel was first mocked up on butcher paper, with dimensions borrowed from various games: the panel itself resembles Mortal Kombat 2, while the buttons are spaced to matchX-Men vs Street Fighter 2. [Quinn] chose some spare melamine—plywood with a plastic coating—to construct the panel, drilled some holes and used a router to carve out space for the joysticks. A USB hub was added to power the servos and to make room for future additions, which [Quinn] will have no difficulty implementing considering that her electrical layout is enviably clean. To cap it all off, she fit two “coin slot” buttons: a quarter placed into a slot serves as a start button when pressed.
Be sure to see the videos after the break that demonstrate the coin buttons and the servos, then check out a different retro joystick hack for a tripod controller, or look to the future with the Steam Controller.

The partial government shut-down that the U.S. is experiencing right now is about to enter its second week. Various government functions and services have been disrupted (including some web sites, whether it's a good idea or not), and lots of workers on the Federal payroll have been furloughed. But since the U.S. government is involved in so many aspects of modern American life, you don't have to work for the government to be affected by the budget politics at play. So, whether or not you work for the government in any capacity, the question we'd like to hear your answer to is this: What does the shutdown mean to you, in practical terms, whether the effects are good, bad, or indifferent?

Over at Wired, Vashant Dhar poses a provocative question: What If IBM's Watson Dethroned the King of Search? 'If IBM did search,' Dhar writes, 'Watson would do much better than Google on the tough problems and they could still resort to a simple PageRank-like algorithm as a last resort. Which means there would be no reason for anyone to start their searches on Google. All the search traffic that makes Google seemingly invincible now could begin to shrink over time.' Mixing supercomputers with a scalable architecture of massive amounts of simple processors and storage, Dhar surmises, would provide a formidable combination of a machine that can remember, know, and think. And because the costs of switching from Google search would not be prohibitive for most, the company is much more vulnerable to disruption. 'The only question,' Dhar concludes, 'is whether it [IBM] wants to try and dethrone Google from its perch. That's one answer Watson can't provide.

Sony’s fourth major PlayStation is also four times as demanding to develop for than its predecessor, says the developer behind Killzone: Shadow Fall.
Eric Boltjes, Guerrilla Games’ lead designer on the PS4 launch title, told VG247 that although it is simpler to build a PlayStation 4 title thanks to its architecture, it also happens to be significantly more challenging.
“The architecture is really cool because it's easier to develop for, you get more memory, you get more hard drive space, you get more processing power so the architecture is easier," said Boltjes.
“It’s also a lot more demanding, because the production effort needed just to make a next-gen title now is not doubled; it’s quadrupled.”
"That’s because everything needs to look that much better. It takes a lot more people, and that takes a lot more communication. So it does it make things a lot more easier from a technical standpoint, but from a professional standpoint it makes things a lot harder.”
Boltjes added that Guerrilla being part of Sony’s next-generation platform was of great importance to the studio, and the decision was made to make the leap almost two-and-a-half years ago.
As one of Sony’s first-party development studios, Guerrilla was involved early on in the consultations for PS4 and some of its direct suggestions have influenced how the console and his hardware has taken shape, such as the concave triggers and analog sticks on the DualShock 4 controller.
Killzone: Shadow Fall is out along with the PlayStation 4 this November.

A developer has created a way of displaying the GPS map of Grand Theft Auto in Google Glass.
Mike DiGiovanni’s app takes the minimap of Grand Theft Auto III and transmits it to the headgear, before using an app based on the Android SDK (as the Glass SDK hasn’t been released by Google yet) which captures the guidance information over Wi-Fi and overlays it onto the map.
Grand Theft Auto III was chosen as DiGiovanni couldn’t runGrand Theft Auto IV on his computers, and Grand Theft Auto V currently has no PC version.
DiGiovanni told TechCrunch that the app, while currently “a very fragile proof of concept” which drains the Glass’ battery in an hour, also serves as an example of how Glass could be used for real-life navigation.
“It’s really similar to how you would use the built in GPS navigation of Glass in a real car,” he explained.
“The most exciting part about this has been opening the conversation up to using Glass or even other wearables as a second screen. It’s a use case that hasn’t been talked about much. It could be something as simple as moving your HUD or map to a wearable device as is demonstrated with this software.”

The Budapest hackerspace did some joint work with a local ham radio club and created anSSTV beacon housed inside a CCTV case that takes an image of its environment and transmits it using slow-scan television over ham bands.
As the title says, the build uses a Raspberry Pi to process the image taken from its camera and then transmits it over the air using a Ricofunk UHF transceiver with a main frequency of 433.425MHz. On the software side, PySSTV is used to convert images to frequency/time tuples, UNIXSSTV then creates the actual audio file and finally sox plays it. To avoid screwing up the Raspberry SD card, every part of the filsystem is either mounted in read-only mode (things like /home and /usr) or uses a ramdisk (things like /tmp and logs).
The plans, schematics and source code are available, so they hope that other hackerspaces will join the ranks!

CNN reports that two separate U.S. military operations have taken place this weekend in Africa; the first in Tripoli, the second in Somalia. "In the earlier raid, U.S. forces captured Abu Anas al Libi, an al Qaeda operative wanted for his role in the deadly 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa. In the second raid, a team of U.S. Navy SEALs in southern Somalia targeted the top leader of Al-Shabaab, a terrorist group linked with al Qaeda." According to the report, it's unclear for now whether the second of these attempts was successful. Unsurprisingly, the Libyan raid has raised the ire of the interim government there, which has objected to the U.S. arrest and removal of al Libi (to an undisclosed placed outside of Libya) as a kidnapping.

Reader dryriver recommends a BBC report on the immense scale of the web-monitoring system in place in China. An excerpt:"More than two million people in China are employed by the government to monitor web activity, state media say, providing a rare glimpse into how the state tries to control the internet. The Beijing News says the monitors, described as internet 'opinion analysts,' are on state and commercial payrolls. China's hundreds of millions of web users increasingly use microblogs to criticise the state or vent anger. Recent research suggested Chinese censors actively target social media. The report by the Beijing News said that these monitors were not required to delete postings. They are "strictly to gather and analyse public opinions on microblog sites and compile reports for decision-makers", it said. It also added details about how some of these monitors work. Tang Xiaotao has been working as a monitor for less than six months, the report says, without revealing where he works. 'He sits in front of a PC every day, and opening up an application, he types in key words which are specified by clients. He then monitors negative opinions related to the clients, and gathers (them) and compiles reports and sends them to the clients,' it says. The reports says the software used in the office is even more advanced and supported by thousands of servers. It also monitors websites outside China."

October 5th, 2013, 11:29 Posted By: wraggster
Last month, The Mirror ran a report blaming Call of Duty for a massacre at a Washington Navy base. Professor Mark Griffiths, the director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University explains why the media needs to stop blaming games...
The issue of video game violence has once again arisen following allegations that Aaron Alexis, the man who killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard, played violent video games for up to 18 hours a day.
I was asked to comment by various national newspapers on whether the playing of violent video games had any role in the subsequent killings.
While there’s a growing body of research (particularly in America) that claims there’s a link between the playing of violent video games and subsequent behaviour, the problem with most of it is that it doesn’t follow people over a long period time. In short, most of the research is what we researchers call ‘cross-sectional’ – it only examines players at one particular ‘snapshot’ in time. As a result, I don’t think that there is any scientific research shows a definite link.
Furthermore, much of the research that has been carried out has been experimental and conducted in non-ecologically valid settings (i.e. in a laboratory setting). In fact, all of the measures used to assess ‘aggression’ are proxy measures that are not related to actual violent actions, because it is unethical to try and induce actual violent acts within a research experiment.
The published survey studies – including my own – are mostly of a correlational nature and none of these demonstrate causality (only that, at best, there may be an associative link). One of the major problems with all of the research is that studies typically fail to take into account all the other types of violence that individuals are exposed to day-to-day: the violence they see on the news, the violence they see in films and television, and the violence seen in their own lives and local community.
"One of the major problems with all of the
research is that studies typically fail to take
into account all the other types of violence
that individuals are exposed to day-to-day:
the violence they see on the news, the
violence they see in films and television,
and the violence seen in their own lives
and local community."
Another problem is that many academic journals only publish studies that show statistically significant findings (meaning that they are more likely to publish a study that suggests a link between playing violent video games and subsequent aggression rather than those that do not).
Personally, I believe people like Alexis were pre-disposed towards violence to start with and there was probably something inherently wrong with him in the first place (particularly as some reports claim that he often heard hallucinatory voices suggesting some kind of psychosis). Therefore, someone like Alexis would choose or seek out the most violent video games to play, and to watch the most violent and bloodthirsty films.
Someone like Alexis may have had an inherent trait towards violence that meant he sought those particular activities out. Video games may have had an influence in informing how he might do something and give him ideas, but they are unlikely to be the root cause of any actual violence. If I played those games all day every day, I really don’t think it would turn me into a homicidal maniac. Alexis may have been exposed to violence when he was younger because research shows what we’re exposed to in our childhoods has a great influence in later life.
I must have watched thousands of violent events (both fictional and real) and I have played the occasional violent video game but it hasn’t changed my behaviour in any way (at least I don’t think it has).
Saying that, I’m a father to three screenagers and I don’t let them play violent video games. Just because I don’t personally think the evidence shows there’s a link, that doesn’t mean there isn’t any effect. It’s just science has failed to demonstrate a conclusive cause.
It’s not about putting the blame on the game. At best, playing violent video games is at best a contributory factor to violence. But it shouldn’t be a scapegoat because all individuals have to take responsibility for their actions.

The London School of Economics has published a new study (PDF) which shows that the claims about digital downloading killing music and movies are overblown. In fact, there is new evidence to indicate that it actually generates more income in certain cases. 'While it acknowledges that sales have stagnated in recent years, the report points out that the overall revenue of the music industry in 2011 was almost $60 billion US, and in 2012, worldwide sales of recorded music increased for the first time since 1999, with 34 per cent of revenues for that year coming from digital channels such as streaming and downloads. "The music industry may be stagnating, but the drastic decline in revenues warned of by the lobby associations of record labels is not in evidence," the report says. ... The growing use of streaming, cloud computing, so-called digital lockers that facilitate the sharing of content and sites that offer a mix of free and paid methods of getting content will, the study predicts, spur the entertainment industries to shift their focus from pursuing illegal downloading to creating more legal avenues for getting content online.'"

The number of consoles in UK households is in decline for the first time since 2007 across all age groups, according to a new Ofcom report.
The children and parents media use and attitudes report claimed that children aged between five and 15 were now less likely to have a console in their bedroom, with numbers dropping form 56 per cent in 2012 to 47 per cent in 2013.
Overall console ownership also dropped slightly, with 87 per cent of children aged five to 15 having access to the hardware in the home.
Use of game handhelds also dropped from 86 per cent to 81 per cent in the same age group.
Availability of tablets meanwhile shot up significantly during the last year, and now feature in 51 per cent of houses in which children aged five to 15 live, compared to just 20 per cent in 2012.
Tablet usage also increased three-fold from 2012, with five to 15 year olds using tablets to play games rising to 23 per cent, compared to seven per cent last year.

Some people think wearable device users are wankers, while others are concerned about the safety riskstechnologies like Google Glasses will pose.
That said, Berg Insight predicts shipments of the devices – comprising smart glasses, smart watches and fitness trackers – will reach 64 million in 2017.
The figure is a huge leap from 3.1 million in 2011 and 8.3 million in 2012, with the growth expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 50.6 per cent.
Fitness devices are dominating the market at the moment, but with Samsung introducing the Galaxy Gear and Apple working on the iWatch, smart watches are set to take the lead in the next few years and integrate the functionality provided by the exercise accessories.
Johan Svanberg, senior analyst, Berg Insight, said: "Today’s devices need to evolve into something more than single purpose fitness trackers or external smartphone notification centres in order to be truly successful."

Sony says 4K TVs can become as popular as HD models in the future as prices come down.
Damien Weissenburger, Sony Europe's display business group head, told PCR at Midwich's Tech Exposed event: "4K in the living room is an important theme for us. The need for higher resolution devices will increase over the next five to ten years, especially as prices come down.
"The size of TVs for consumers is very important. 3D TVs were different, whereas HD to 4K is a resolution step. It's the next HD."
Sony showed off several 4K projectors at the event as well as a 4K TV priced at £16,000 - the 3840x2160 resolution FWD84 4K X Reality Pro.
Weissenburger also said the home cinema and movie sectors are important to Sony and Sony Pictures, with some films like After Earth being filmed in 4K.
Additionally, Sony is targeting educational and residential markets with its AV offering, and says its products are ideal for meeting rooms, classrooms and more.
"We want to stretch the boundaries and give a better experience to customers," he added.
