“The fact that PS4 and Xbox One have had a combative summer is good,” says EA Labels president Frank Gibeau in the new issue of Edge magazine, on sale October 24.Gibeau offers us his thoughts on the face off between the two new consoles, EA’s potentially disc-free future and how the publishing giant will implement subscriptions and microstransactions in our wide-ranging interview. His assessment of the battle between Microsoft and Sony’s new consoles suggests that he is well aware of the problems Xbox One has faced to date.“I think the Sony team has executed exceptionally well – and they did not execute particularly well on PS3, whereas last time around Microsoft executed perfectly,” he tells us. “This time, Microsoft has run into some challenges, some leadership changes, but they’re a very resilient organisation, and if you look at their counter punches on any setbacks, they’ve done a pretty good job of getting back on track.”When asked if the FIFA/Xbox One bundle, first announced as a pre-order incentive for European players at Gamescom, could be a sign that EA is currently leaning more towards Microsoft, he responds: “We’re not tilting Microsoft’s way; we are firm longterm supporters of Sony. I’m sure you’ll see tactical programmes between us and Sony in the future that we haven’t announced, but will make things much more balanced.”

North America and Europe welcome Warface on PC today, a big step for a game that is itself a big step for its developer, Crytek. Warface is the company's first free-to-play game, the first step in a planned journey that culminates in theCrysis and Ryse studio going fully free-to-play within five years.
At the recent DICE Europe conference, CEO Cevat Yerli spoke about closing the visual gap between cinema and games, and how Crytek is using advanced lighting and modeling effects to make Xbox One historical adventure Rysestand out. Afterwards, I asked Yerli about the difficulties in marrying F2P with the studio's reputation for high-end graphics.
"It's just a matter of time," Yerli said. "We already introduced with Warfare a much higher quality relative to the current generation of gaming, and Ryse is [our] first game that launches a next-generation experience. Going forward, I expect free-to-play games to catch up with next-generation offerings as well. So it's really just a matter of time."

Worrying about broken street dates might seem like a very Old World problem to many.
But ‘tiny‘ issues like this matter more and more as games retail fights for a bigger part to play in the release of big titles.
These days anyone can launch a game, but it’s not easy converting that release into legitimate success (measured however you want – sales, revenue, users, ‘reach‘, etc).
That‘s where video games retail comes in, whether it‘s a stop-off during a mum‘s Saturday shopping trip, a hangout for kids and a new place to showcase digital titles. Or, for the more jargon-minded, the final destination after a customer‘s been ‘activated‘ and gone through a ‘purchase decision journey‘.
When everything‘s working in the right order we know that a simple release date becomes a ‘moment‘. It‘s not a particularly genuine or epoch-making turning point, but a release date is a designed event. It‘s theatre to celebrate a game‘s arrival.
In its transformation, GAME has rightly seized these moments to underline its deep pockets of customers in the games community.
But break that process and all that preparation is undermined.
Last week GAME was in the awkward position of having to follow its peers and offer Pokémon early, texting pre-ordering consumers their games were available hours early but that, er, the midnight launches were still going ahead.
It‘s not just undermining GAME‘s work, but the future of its peers too.
Sure, no one was harmed in the end. Pokémon still came out, and it‘s not like early release dates stop people buying games en masse.
But ask yourself: what happens when it comes to planning the next game? How many times will publishers excuse those who went early before they test exclusive launches through retailers that will abide to a release date?
Such a process, accompanied by a digital launch that totally cuts the street breakers out of the equation, is great for those on the inside track but a disaster for those who effectively cut themselves out for a short term gain.

Speculation suggests Red Dead sequel in the works following hints from Rockstar employee CV
The CV of a Rockstar New England employee has indicated that the studio is currently working on a follow-up to one of the publisher's biggest franchises.
Spotted by Kotaku columnist Superannuation, the LinkedIn profile of senior graphics engineer Doron Feinstein lists his current project as "Next version of a famous IP".
While it doesn't specify platforms, it's probably safe to assume at this stage that this will be for next-gen consoles.
There's plenty of speculation on what "famous IP" Feinstein is referring to. The most likely candidates would be Red Dead or perhaps Bully.
However, Superannuation argues that it could turn out to be DLC for Grand Theft Auto V, perhaps in the style of GTA IV's Episodes from Liberty City expansions.
References to "next version" rule out the possibility of this being Agent, Rockstar's newest IP that was announced back in 2009. The game is apparently still in the works, although nothing has been heard since its initial announcement.

GTA-style MMO upgrading to the same engine as Gears of War 3
The team behind APB Reloaded have revealed that it will be upgrading the game's engine early next year, potentially making the MMO compatible for consoles.
The title currently runs on the version of Unreal Engine 3 released in 2008, but Reloaded Productions is trying to move on to the 2013 version, which features the improvements Epic Games made for Xbox 360 hit Gears of War 3.
Work began in July with the current aim to implement the upgrade by Q1 2014. Success will not only improve the quality of the game, but also allow APB Reloaded to be ported beyond the PC.
"By upgrading the engine, we also open some interesting possibilities, including a path to launch on other platforms in the future," the official blog post reads.
APB Reloaded was relaunched in 2011 after the closure of its original developer Realtime Worlds in 2010.

The chief technology officer at Oculus has said that the Rift headset could work as an independent system in the future.
John Carmack, who was lead programmer of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D at Id Software before joining Oculus, commented that he imagined the Virtual Reality headset, which currently works in a similar manner to an external display and requires being connected to a computer, using Android to run software without requiring any other technology.
"The way I believe it's going to play out is you will eventually have a head-mounted display that probably runs Android as a standalone system, that has a system-on-a-chip that's basically like what you have in mobile phones," Carmack told Engadget in an interview.
"Maybe that means you can only do Quake 3 or something inside there," he explained, referencing his previous work.
Carmack went on to say that while the headset would still allow use via a computer connection, the ability to operate free of an external device would give greater immersion to players.
"It does make a big difference not having a wire dragging off your shoulder. It's significant,” he said.
The Rift is currently only available as a developer version, with the consumer version, which will add 1080p HD support among other improvements, lacking a release date.
"A lot of the work at Oculus has gone into working out better position tracking," Carmack said of the fine-tuning taking place before the consumer version is released.
"It's one of the easiest ways to make yourself sick," he said, explaining the importance in removing the delay in head-tracking.
"Look at the floor and sway side to side. It feels like the whole world is penduluming underneath you."
"The tracking side is something that there hasn't been as much of a push for and we're frantically working on a lot of that, because that is one of the other really large issues. But we expect that the next developer kit will have higher resolution and position tracking addressing some of these significant issues."
Carmack added that a new version of the Rift’s developer kit would be released before the consumer model hits shelves, and will contain many of the improvements made to fidelity and quality.

HTC’s CEO has said wearable technology is a ‘critical segment’ for the company.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Peter Chou revealed that the firm has worked on a smartwatch with Microsoft several years ago.
While he didn’t reveal when an HTC smartwatch would launch, he did say that wearable technology was “one area we are excited about”.
Another appears to be tablets. In the same interview, chairwoman Cher Wang told the FT that when the HTC tablet comes out it will be “something nice and disruptive”.
HTC unveiled its new Android-powered One Max 5.9-inch ‘phablet’ last week, which includes fingerprint technology.
So, while HTC is producing smartphones already on the large side, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this spills over into the tablet market. As for something ‘disruptive’, we’re not really sure what that means, considering the firm seems to be one step behind Apple with its fingerprint tech. But with Mr Chou telling the FT “For us to stay competitive and survive is not a huge problem” HTC must have something up its sleeve.
Last week the publication reported that Amazon will enter the smartphone market with HTC, saying their smartphones are already at an ‘advanced stage of development’.

Smart watches have arrived, and Google Glass is on its way. As early-adopters start to gain some experience with these devices, they're learning some interesting lessons about how wearable computing affects our behavior differently from even smartphones and tablets. Vint Cerf says, 'Our social conventions have not kept up with the technology.' Right now, it's considered impolite to talk on your cellphone while checking out at the grocery store, or to ignore a face-to-face conversation in favor of texting somebody. But 20 years ago, those actions weren't even on our social radar. Wearable devices create some obvious social problems, like the aversion to Glass's ever-present camera. But there are subtler ones, as well, for which we'll need to develop another set of social norms. A Pebble smart watch user gave an example: 'People thought I was being rude and checking the time constantly when I was really monitoring incoming messages. It sent the wrong signal.' The article continues, 'Therein lies the wearables conundrum. You can put a phone away and choose not to use it. You can turn to it with permission if you're so inclined. Wearables provide no opportunity for pause, as their interruptions tend to be fairly continuous, and the interaction is more physical (an averted glance or a vibration directly on your arm). It's nearly impossible to train yourself to avoid the reflex-like response of interacting. By comparison, a cell phone is away (in your pocket, on a table) and has to be reached for.'

Mobile Media Ventures' iConsole.tv gaming system is quickly turning into a jack of all trades, as the company now plans to support SteamOS through its PC's Android interface. Valve's TV-friendly platform will only be a shortcut away, MMV claims. Players won't have to partition drives, tweak firmware or otherwise mess with low-level settings, either. We won't know how well this Linux-on-Linux approach works until the company provides more details in the months ahead, but it's promising -- it could greatly expand iConsole.tv's game library without compromising on simplicity of use.

The NY Times has a story about the imminent release of Battlefield 4 on 29 October, as it's one of the most highly-anticipated video games of the year. The most interesting part of the article is where it highlights what a mammoth undertaking such 'AAA' games have become. There are hundreds upon hundreds of people working full time on it, and hundreds of millions of dollars tied up in its development. These number have been rising and rising over the years; how big do they get before it becomes completely unfeasible to top your last game? The article also points out that the PC platform is beginning to wane in popularity. Nobody's quite sure yet whether it'll level out or go into serious decline, but you can bet development studios are watching closely. With bigger and bigger stakes, how long before they decide it's not worth the risk? Even consoles aren't safe: 'Electronic Arts is nevertheless trying to extend franchises like Battlefield to devices, because it must. But at the same time, it has to grapple with the threats undermining traditional gaming. Though the classic consoles are getting reboots this fall, there is no guarantee that new models will permanently revive the format's fortunes.' And of course, the question must be asked: do we even want the 'AAA' games to stick around?

Retailer Argos is enjoying a lift in burglar alarms, CCTV and other security products thanks to smarter technology being deployed in the sector.
The UK chain put its success down to its “universal appeal” and wide range – from entry through to high-end products – as well as an increase in smartphone app usage.
“We do a reasonable business on security products and as consumers gain a greater familiarity with wireless technology we are seeing more products coming to market,” technology trading manager Simon Barry told PCR. “Burglar alarms and CCTV used to be challenging due to running miles of cables but now just need to be screwed to the walls.
“Tech security such as CCTV and maybe software for PC protection has traditionally been seen as ‘man’s work’ but I think it is much more gender neutral now.
“We also see apps playing a bigger part in people’s lives – child monitors and smartphones are quite prevalent. Additionally, we are seeing a major uptake of people wanting camera kits to monitor their pets at home – checking their moggie or pooch is okay while they are at work all day.”
Argos says that the market for security software has also grown due to an increase in online scams.
The retailer recently launched a free service that allows parents to monitor different websites their children visit – and block certain inappropriate or possibly unsafe content.
“The web is great, but parents need to prepare their children and, when asked, most consider it important but don’t really know what to do,” added Barry.
“Security is very relevant today, partially because this kind of identify fraud and scamming is increasing and partially because of mass distribution services such as Twitter, Facebook and email – you tend to hear about things that may have always existed but have only just been outed.
“As more people browse the web, security of some description is de rigour.”

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has suggested the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain gameplay experience will extend beyond consoles, once again alluding to second-screen features in the upcoming sequel.
<figure style='font: 14px/23.79px "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; width: 460px; color: rgb(38, 38, 38); text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; display: block; white-space: normal; position: relative; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;' class="responsive single-article__canvas single-article__canvas--full zoomhover" title="" data-media992="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_3007/image_300772_460.jpg" data-media768="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_3007/image_300772_700.jpg" data-media480="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_3007/image_300772_480.jpg" data-media="http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_3007/image_300772_320.jpg"></figure>Although he did not provide specifics, Kojima indicated that extended gameplay opportunities will be available to players and said this was something the studio has been working towards since it began work on Metal Gear Solid 4.
"Metal Gear Solid 4 was a turning point: the engine, the multi-platform and online elements," he said in an interview with IGN.
"Moving forward I wanted to have a Metal Gear Solid that you could play on whatever you wanted, and that's how we created Peace Walker. Now we're presenting something again that's console-only, but that's not actually true of Metal Gear Solid 5.
"Metal Gear Solid 5 will have many more elements that aren't limited to one console. You'll be able to play the game on whatever you want, whenever you want."
Kojima has previously expressed interest in exploring Kinect and SmartGlass features for the game's Xbox One version and allow players to create their own missions.
"The other reason for the game going open-world is that we wanted to use multiple devices for this game," he said during an interview with CVG.
"So using tablets and smart phones you can also enjoy MGSV and create user-generated missions within the world... if it was linear we wouldn't be able to do that."
Elsewhere in the interview, Kojima explained that Ground Zeroes, a prologue section of the overall Metal Gear Solid 5 experience, serves to ease players into the new open-world format.
"Metal Gear, so far, has been a somewhat linear game... Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is a huge game with a vast open world."
"For Metal Gear fans, it may be a bit confusing to step into that huge open world of Phantom Pain. So Ground Zeroes is the first step in between, where players will experience a more compact and controlled prologue episode."
Konami has not yet provided an official Metal Gear Solid 5 release date. However, it was recently revealed the game is coming to Xbox One as well as PlayStation 4.

With all of the focus on the imminent unveiling of a certain next-generation Nexus smartphone, another of Google's bestselling products could soon be set for a wider launch of its own. The company has begun lifting restrictions on the official Chromecast apps and is now allowing iOS and Android users outside of the US to download them for the first time. We've successfully installed the apps on our devices in the UK and Canada, while additional reports lend credibility to complete international rollout. The Chromecast still finds itself geographically challenged, but those who jumped on Amazon's offer of international shipping will welcome Google's decision to extend the availability of the apps. While we're expecting to see the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat launch before the end of the month, we wouldn't be surprised if Google has a Chromecast surprise up its sleeve too.

Samsung has said that it will stop taking rivals to court [in the E.U.] over certain patent infringements for the next five years. The white flag in the patent battle has been raised because the South Korean electronics firm faces a huge fine for alleged abuses of the system. The move could help end a long-running patent war between the world's largest mobile makers. The E.U. said that a resolution would bring 'clarity to the industry'. 'Samsung has offered to abstain from seeking injunctions for mobile SEPs (standard essential patents) for a period of five years against any company that agrees to a particular licensing framework,' the European Commission said in a statement. Standard essential patents refer to inventions recognised as being critical to implementing an industry standard technology. Examples of such technologies include the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), a cellular standard at the heart of 3G data; and H.264, a video compression format used by YouTube, Blu-ray disks and Adobe Flash Player among others. The E.U. had accused the Samsung of stifling competition by bringing a series of SEP lawsuits against Apple and other rivals

Oculus Rift's new Chief Technology Officer John Carmack says a new Oculus Rift dev kit is in the works and will arrive in developers' hands before the retail unit ships some time next year. In an interview with Engadget this morning, Carmack also spelled out what he sees as the future of the Rift's consumer model: an Android-powered standalone headset powered by an SoC. "The way I believe it's going to play out is you will eventually have a head-mounted display that probably runs Android, as a standalone system, that has a system-on-a-chip that's basically like what you have in mobile phones," Carmack said.
Echoing company founder Palmer Luckey, Carmack said that the Rift was born from mobile technology's constant push forward, bringing down the price of Rift's components and making it accessible to consumers. He expects mobile tech to reach 4K resolution in the not-so-distant future, making future models of the Rift much sharper visually. The bigger issue, though, is head-tracking -- something Carmack's actively concerned with and working to solve ahead of a retail release. "A lot of the work at Oculus has gone into working out better position tracking," he told us. "The tracking side is something that there hasn't been as much of a push for and we're frantically working on a lot of that, because that is one of the other really large issues. But we expect that the next developer kit will have higher resolution and position tracking addressing some of these significant issues."
As for how the Rift consumer version will launch, that's another question altogether -- he said that there are several camps within Oculus arguing for a retail release vs. direct-to-consumers vs. other options. Head below the break for the full video interview with much more from one of gaming's most famous faces.

NPD results reveal a huge September for the retail side of the industry thanks to Rockstar's record-breaking performance
With GTA V quickly exceeding worldwide revenues of $1 billion in just three days, it should come as little surprise that NPD's US retail report is actually good... quite good. Total industry sales climbed 27 percent to $1.079 billion, while console and portable software sales jumped 52 percent to more than $754 million (factoring in PC brings the total down to a 40 percent increase). Accessories nudged up two percent, while hardware was the only category to decline, dropping 13 percent to $183.2 million - not exactly unexpected as everyone is gearing up for the launch of next-gen.
NPD analyst Liam Callahan noted that GTA V was a "much needed shot in the arm for the industry" and that the game "represented over 50 percent of dollar sales in September, and had the highest first month sales than any other previous launch in the Grand Theft Auto franchise."
Interestingly, on the hardware side, Sony's PS3 finally managed to break Microsoft's long-running Xbox 360 streak. "PS3 was the top selling console this month, breaking the 32-month streak of the Xbox 360 leading console hardware sales from January 2011 to August 2013," Callahan said, adding that PS3 was given a lift by the GTA V 500GB PS3 bundle, "demonstrating how Grand Theft Auto V can shake things up in hardware as well as software.”
While GTA V stole the spotlight, other top performers for the month included EA Sports' Madden NFL 25 and FIFA 14, Take-Two's NBA 2K14, and Blizzard's Diablo III. The complete top 10 chart is below.
