An FBI official notes that the bureau has located and seized a collection of 144,000 bitcoins, the largest seizure of that cryptocurrency ever, worth close to $28.5 million at current exchange rates. It believes that the stash belonged to Ross Ulbricht, the 29-year-old who allegedly created and managed the Silk Road, the popular anonymous drug-selling site that was taken offline by the Department of Justice after Ulbricht was arrested earlier this month and charged with engaging in a drug trafficking and money laundering conspiracy as well as computer hacking and attempted murder-for-hire. The FBI official wouldn't say how the agency had determined that the Bitcoin 'wallet' — a collection of Bitcoins at a single address in the Bitcoin network — belonged to Ulbricht, but it was sure they were his. 'This is his wallet,' said the FBI official. 'We seized this from DPR,' the official added, referring to the pseudonym 'the Dread Pirate Roberts,' which prosecutors say Ulbricht allegedly used while running the Silk Road."

The administrator of file-sharing site UploaderTalk shocked and enraged his userbase a few days ago when he revealed thatthe site was nothing more than a honeypot set up by a company called Nuke Piracy. The main purpose of the site had been to gather data on its users. The administrator said, 'I collected info on file hosts, web hosts, websites. I suckered $#!&loads of you. I built a history, got the trust of some very important people in the warez scene collecting information and data all the time.' Nobody knows what Nuke Piracy is going to do with the data, but it seems reasonable to expect lawsuits and the further investigation of any services the users discussed. His very public betrayal is likely meant to sow discord and distrust among the groups responsible for distributing pirated files.

The delays to Watch Dogs and DriveClub will not derail the launch of PS4 and Xbox One, UK High Street stores have said.
Retailers told MCV that although these delays are disappointing, they have not seen mass cancellations of pre-orders. And they expect both next-gen consoles to be sold out on day one.
Watch Dogs was one of the most anticipated games set to launch alongside the next-gen this November. But it is now due spring 2014.
”Whilst we’re disappointed that these have slipped, we understand that publishers want to bring their best product to market so they’ll be worth the wait,” said HMV games boss Phil Browes. ”We don’t think this will have an adverse effect on next-gen, there’s a huge buzz around both consoles.”
Head of games for The Hut Paul Cannings added: ”I still foresee a complete next-gen sell out. It is unfortunate that these titles have slipped, but it will still be a very strong launch for each platform and we will have some very exciting games to look forward to next year.”
Green Man Gaming’s Darren Cairns says the firm hasn’t seen a big impact from the high profile delays, and points to the strong launch line-up that is still in place: ”We shouldn’t forget that there are still some big titles coming down the track at launch.”
Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda all admitted that they will miss the sales from Watch Dogs. But that the demand for PS4 and Xbox One remains high. Tesco’s buyer Jonathan Ferdenzi said the delays?”won’t affect sales of the hardware.”
Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s games chief Gurdeep Hunjan added: ”The delay to Watch Dogs and DriveClub isn’t ideal, however I’m confident we should be okay, with other strong titles coming.”

According to a report in the Miami Herald, 'Chancellor Angela Merkel has called President Barack Obama after receiving information that U.S. intelligence may have targeted her mobile phone. Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said Merkel made clear in Wednesday's call that "she views such practices, if the indications are confirmed ... as completely unacceptable" and called for U.S. authorities to clarify the extent of surveillance in Germany.' Der Spiegel has some information onGermany's own "PRISM" project. White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama 'assured the chancellor that the United States is not monitoring and will not monitor' her communications. He didn't mention anything about past communications. This news follows allegations of U.S. surveillance of the Presidents of Mexico, and France. Yesterday the LA Times noted, 'French authorities are shocked — shocked — to learn that the American government is spying on French citizens. The Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. ambassador to the Quai D'Orsay to inform him that what's going on is "unacceptable," and President Francois Hollande claimed to have issued a stern rebuke to President Obama in a phone conversation.' Up until now, Merkel had been reluctant to say anything bad about the U.S. over the NSA leaks.

No one likes a price hike, especially mid-contract. Neither does UK regulator Ofcom it seems, which is setting out new policy clarification for mobile, broadband and landline suppliers. The guidance is to prevent different "interpretations" of existing policy, and will ensure customers can leave their contracts -- without penalty -- if prices are raised during a their contract. No one can argue that's not good for consumers, but it won't come into place for three months, and only applies to contracts taken out after that. It also doesn't apply to other general changes in terms and conditions, or when price goes up due to other factors (exceeding a data bundle etc). Still, come the new year, signing on that dotted line should give folk in the UK a little less anxiety.

Image from charity: water taken with Glass
It has flown over San Francisco, adorned the faces of runway models and most recently taken a road trip across the US. Now Google's already iconic wearable computer is taking a more altruistic journey with five non-profit organizations. Starting today, a small selection of Google Giving partners will begin using Glass to help them achieve their organizations' missions and "tackle some complex challenges." It's unclear exactly what the groups will do with Glass, but Google says they will use the device in their daily work to "bring more transparency to philanthropy, and close the gap between donors and the people they support." Participating organizations include The World Wildlife Fund; Samasource, which offers enterprise data services to poor women and youth; Give Directly, an organization with a web-based solution for connecting donors to individual households in Kenya; the all-purpose youth-focused Do Something!; and charity: water, which concentrates on clean water initiatives.
Still in early development, the device's cost and lack of functionality have proved prohibitive, and a few socially inconsiderate early adopters have inspired the term glasshole. While Glass is hardly in need of a PR facelift, the Giving Through Glass initiative should shed some light on the wearable's more practical applications.

If you have a passing interest in blockbuster cinema and/or comic-books (or perhaps just beards) then there’s a strong chance you’ll be seeing Thor 2: The Dark World over the coming fortnight. You won’t, however, be able to hammer-throw your way down the bustling high-street to drop hard-earned cash on a movie tie-in videogame. And that is a very good thing. The death of the movie tie-in has been a slow burn that’s seen a mostly abhorrent trickle of blink-and-miss boxed titles muddying the names of everything from Marvel’s Iron Man to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek over the past ten years, each with seemingly diminished returns and lower Metacritic rankings than the last. It’s not difficult to figure out why such titles don’t make the grade: they’re part of a marketing plan rather than a more wholesome creative vision, designed to coincide with the tidal wave of excitement for a given franchise rather than succeed on their own merits. I can only imagine the lofty ideas that are cruelly abandoned, the pre-production time (if there is any) that is soon sucked into crunch time.It became clear as far back as Super Star Wars that the less synchronous a movie or comic-related game is with any big budget film release in cinemas, the better the chance the game will turn out at least memorable (Konami’s punchy 90s Batman Returns take on Streets Of Rage and Rebellion’s first Aliens Versus Predator come to mind) if not immortal (Rare’s GoldenEye 007 and Starbreeze’s Butcher Bay might flesh out this category) and preferably not landfill (Atari’s ET).

The combination of smartphone panels with relatively cheap and light-weight lenses enabled affordable wide-angle Head Mounted Displays like the Oculus Rift. However, these optics introduce distortions when viewing the image through the HMD. So far these have been compensated for in software by using post-processing pixel shaders that warp the image. However, by doing so a loss in image quality (sharpness) can be perceived. Now researchers from Intel found a way around this error by using different sampling for rendering, therefore potentially increasing the image quality of all current and future HMDs with a wide field of view."Rather than applying barrel distortion to the final raster image, the researchers warp the scene geometry during rasterization. However, it currently requires ray tracing so it's a bit computationally expensive. Note that a vertex transformation can be used (with tessellation used to enhance the approximation), but the results are of variable quality.

"A news release from Vanderbilt University begins, 'Solar cells that produce electricity 24/7, not just when the sun is shining. Mobile phones with built-in power cells that recharge in seconds and work for weeks between charges. These are just two of the possibilities raised by a novel supercapacitor design invented by material scientists ... that is described in a paper published in the Oct. 22 issue of the journal Scientific Reports. It is the first supercapacitor that is made out of silicon so it can be built into a silicon chip along with the microelectronic circuitry that it powers. In fact, it should be possible to construct these power cells out of the excess silicon that exists in the current generation of solar cells, sensors, mobile phones and a variety of other electromechanical devices, providing a considerable cost savings. ... Instead of storing energy in chemical reactions the way batteries do, “supercaps” store electricity by assembling ions on the surface of a porous material. As a result, they tend to charge and discharge in minutes, instead of hours, and operate for a few million cycles, instead of a few thousand cycles like batteries.' The full academic paper is available online."

Maxis’s city-building sim is being adopted into US classrooms, and aims to teach child about pollution and its knock-on effects
A specially created educational edition of SimCity is to be released for schools next month.
SimCityEdu: Pollution Challenge! will be released on November 7th to a selection of US schools for grades six to eight, and will give pupils the chance to be mayor of their city and decide how to tackle environmental issues.
As well as environmental issues, such as traffic congestion and pollution, pupils will also have to deal with employment and housing needs as they attempt to keep their citizens happy.
This special version, based on Maxis’s 2013 SimCity, has been a collective effort by GlassLab, an educational video game lab set up last summer by the Institute of Play, EA and the ESA.
SimCityEdu will be included in curriculum plans and comes equipped with teaching guidelines for classrooms.
“[GameLab] are taking the software, and they are able to take the time and energy to focus it just for educational uses,” said SimCity creative director Stone Librande. “They can go into our interfaces and change them around, and custom-tailor them to a certain age range of kid, for a certain classroom setting and lesson plan that they've devised.”

Epic Games has released a new video exploring the visual enhancements that are capable with Unreal Engine 4.
At GDC in March, the engine maker showed its Infiltrator demo, which demonstrated fluid character movements, high dynamic range lighting effects and photoreal landscapes. It was an arresting glimpse at what the next generation of games will look like with Unreal Technology.
In its latest Inside Unreal video, Epic’s senior FX artist Tim Elek explains how he created muzzle flashes, smoke and impact effects for the Infiltrator demo.

The executive producer of the massive space MMO EVE Online has said that Virtual Reality devices – such as the Oculus Rift – will “transform the industry” as it goes mainstream.
David Reid, sometimes known as CCP Pokethulhu, who is also chief of marketing at EVE’s developer CCP, made the comments to PCR after being asked about the strength of VR.
“We invested in the Kickstarter for Oculus Rift and are thrilled with its development,” said Reid.
CCP is currently developing EVE: Valkyrie, a spin-off of EVE Online, which lets players dogfight in space.
“We believe this new wave of VR technology has the potential to truly transform the industry – it’s blown the minds of everyone we’ve seen encounter it as we’ve shown them EVE: Valkyrie,” he added.
Reid stated that he believes such devices are set for success, based on the strength of immersion offered by VR technology.
“Of course, the first few months or years may seem ‘niche,’” Reid explained, “but it feels almost inevitable that widespread adoption will ultimately happen – the level of immersion offered is just too powerful.”
“It’s not just a new way to interact with games, it’s a new way to really experience them – and in an accessible, sensory-based way that causes everyone, from the most jaded games journalist to complete novice gamers, to giggle with happiness on trying it.”
Reid also commented on the transition to digital distribution by software providers.
“EVE was in fact one of the first digitally distributed games, and CCP has been one of the more active developers in supporting the digital transition,” he said, “[but] we don’t expect retail to disappear anytime soon.”
EVE Online celebrated its tenth anniversary in May, and is set to release its 20th free expansion 'EVE Online: Rubicon' on November 19th.

Argos is opening several digital concept stores that will remove in-store catalogues, paper, pens and stock check devices and replace them with tablets.
The concept shops, expected to open in the near future, will also be used by the retailer to test out "a number of new digital and store innovations" such as fast-track collection for customers who've pre-paid for products online or via a mobile device.
"With around 90 per cent of all sales still involving a store, the Argos store estate remains a key component of the Argos multi-channel model," said Argos in a statement.
"The digital concept stores will also offer a new and more flexible way to merchandise product and support supplier promotions. Additionally, these stores will trial increased levels of customer support, including specially trained members of staff equipped with technology to support customers through their journey."
The news comes as Argos parent Home Retail Group posts financial results for the half-year ending August 31st, 2013.
Internet penetration increased to 43 per cent of Argos' total sales, with mobile commerce growing 124 per cent to account for 16 per cent of total sales.
Sales rose three per cent to £2,596m, while like-for-like sales increased 2.3 per cent at Argos. Cash gross margin rose one per cent to £962m, with reported profit before tax at £14.2 million.
Terry Duddy, Chief Executive of Home Retail Group, said: "Argos performed well and recorded its fifth consecutive quarter of like-for-like sales growth. It has continued to grow its internet sales, powered by the growth in mobile commerce which now accounts for 16 per cent of Argos' total sales.
"The Argos transformation is well underway, including the introduction of new smartphone and tablet apps, the extension of the 'hub & spoke' trial, the launch of a digital Christmas gift guide and the development of digital concept stores.
"Overall we are making good progress and are in excellent operational shape as we approach the key Christmas trading period."
A statement regarding the tablet market added: "Tablets continued to be a strong driver of growth in the first half of the financial year, with Argos' wide range of competitively priced products delivering a strong offer in a competitive market.
"Argos expect the tablet market to continue to see strong growth throughout the forthcoming peak trading period and have recently announced the launch of a new own brand tablet, 'MyTablet', in the Christmas gift guide, which will retail below the £100 price point."

It's pretty clear that wearables, whether they be made for the face or the wrist, are going to be the next big thing in hardware. According to The Wall Street Journal'ssources "familiar with the matter," Microsoft doesn't want to be late to the party, and is currently playing with prototypes of "web-connected eyewear similar to Google Glass." This isn't the first time we've heard whispers of such a device, of course: we knew Microsoft's been keen on some form of AR glasses since Project Fortaleza leaked back in June last year. Apparently, Redmond is currently tapping Asian manufacturers for components, such as cameras, for its wearable, but that it "may never reach mass production," suggesting Microsoft hasn't committed to any formal development process yet. That's as far as the rumors go at this point, but it's further evidence Microsoft isn't content with a presence in just our bags and pockets.

Former EA CEO laments that “$60 is a giant FU to a very large number of people"
New consoles are launching in under a month, and for the average consumer, buying new hardware in addition to several games at the price of $60 each is a significant outlay of cash. Game pricing has been a sensitive subject for some time now, and former EA boss John Riccitiello believes that the console/PC side of the business could learn a thing or two from the booming mobile space.
"Another thing that console and PC guys could and should learn is variable pricing," Riccitiello said at the recent Gaming Insiders Summit, as reported by the [a]list daily. "$60 is a giant FU to a very large number of people. There's not been a console game with even half as many installs as Clash of Clans. Puzzle & Dragons has got more installs than any console game in history. Getting a larger audience through variable pricing is a really useful thing."
The executive also noted that even with all its efforts of late, the traditional games industry still hasn't been able to get "games as service" right. The recent GTA Online hiccup serves as the newest example.
"More than anything, what the traditional game industry should learn from mobile is it's really about service," Riccitiello said. "It's an ongoing business. You'd think we would have learned this some time ago, but I find it interesting that WoW and Sim City and GTA and Starcraft and many other games all fell over at launch when they put their service components together. Some of the biggest brands - I'd argue almost all the biggest brands - fell over from lack of the testing and research that mobile people do in the regular course of their day."
And the traditional industry still makes games too complicated for the masses, he argued. It may be fun for the hardcore crowd, but it's ultimately limiting when it comes to audience. "The third thing to learn is simplicity," he said. Riccitiello noted how games used to come with "500 page manuals" and while games have gotten simpler, "It's incredibly rare for a new game from a traditional game company to be learnable without instruction in ten, fifteen or twenty seconds and get to the fun that quick."
