Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe believes that film and other industries will see plenty of disruption in future thanks to VR tech
For some in the industry, the Oculus Rift headset is more exciting and more "next-gen" than the upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Virtual reality has been a topic of discussion for the games business for many years, but it never felt like it could really take off in a mainstream way. Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe, speaking at the GamesBeat conference, said that the Oculus tech will "finally deliver on that dream."
It's one thing to have a prototype in a lab, but Iribe insists that the consumer product version is coming together very, very well. "The market will be pretty blown away by how good the product feels," he said.
"It is a breakthough where you don't have this screen anymore. You have a 360-degree canvas," he added, noting that an "incredible amount of disruption can happen" in VR. Iribe believes the innovation in VR will happen not just in games, but that the tech will ultimately disrupt other industries, like film. "Gravity was made for VR. VR is going to have a big impact on film," he said.
On the gaming side, one of the big factors tied to VR is emotion, Iribe said. "You have a sense of presence where you're connected to the environment. In VR, you look up and you're still there, you get that sense of scale. And you'll now have characters that know where your eyes are," he said, noting that the level of immersion where characters can tell if you're looking at them or away will enable devs to pull at gamers' emotions in ways never before possible.
"The content that will define the experience will be made for VR. Just like Wii or iPhone, you don't port from PC, the best is made for iPhone," he added. Iribe is aware that Oculus will only be as good as the games for it, and he's hugely encouraged by what devs, both AAA and indie, have been creating. "Content sells hardware... It blows us away to see what people are making. No one's ever seen [these experiences] before on a 2D monitor," he said.
Interestingly, Iribe believes that his company can have a big impact on mobile too - not exactly an area that you'd think would benefit from VR. He said that Oculus has been able to really leverage John Carmack's smarts. "I was skeptical about how good mobile VR would be," Iribe remarked, but he said Carmack has been working "on something very exciting that has to do with mobile," and Oculus now has "some exciting plans on the mobile VR side as well."
Iribe said that Oculus is looking to launch on multiple platforms almost simultaneously, including Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android.

Call of Duty: Ghosts executive producer Mark Rubin has suggested that Call of Duty's most loyal players aren't really gamers at all.
Rubin told OXM that the franchise's most dedicated players fall under an undefined category, as the label of gamer shouldn't be applied to someone who doesn't play games outside of the series.
"We have an enormous amount of players who are more in the casual game space, but they play a lot,” Rubin said.
"It's kind of a weird, ironic thing to say; They aren't hardcore gamers, or even gamers, but they play Call of Duty every night. And those guys are going to continue to play regardless of platform. So I think not only will we continue to engage with that existing player base, but we'll take next gen and see how far we can go with it."
Call of Duty: Ghosts will be available November 5th on PC, PS3, Wii U and Xbox 360. It'll launch November 15th on PS4, and November 22nd on Xbox One.

Jagex has announced that the recent introduction of Bonds into RuneScape has resulted in the near total eradication of the prohibited practice in the game. Since Bonds launched on 26th September, the amount of wealth injected by illegal gold farmers into the free-to-play MMORPG has plummeted by 81 percent.
“Dishonest gold farming has had a detrimental effect on the online gaming space since its inception, and Jagex has worked tirelessly to limit the scope and consequence this activity has had on RuneScape over many years,” said Riaan Hodgson, Chief Operations Officer at Jagex.
Hodgson continued, “While we anticipated that the launch of Bonds would impact the flow of illegal wealth into the game, we are thrilled the initiative has resulted in such a strong and immediate impact. This action lays the foundations for RuneScape to continue going from strength to strength in its second successful decade!”
In addition to dramatically reducing levels of gold farming, RuneScape Bonds also form the backbone of Jagex’s ‘Pay-through-Play’ initiative. Players can purchase and use Bonds to access premium membership content, exchange them with other community members for in-game items and wealth, or gift them to friends anywhere in the world.
“We’ve had a great response from the community since Bonds launched, and we are pleased to see the new features have had an immediate impact on the game,” said Phil Mansell, Executive Producer of RuneScape. “As well as seriously undermining gold farmers, Bonds open up exciting benefits for players, such as RuneScape membership, via ‘Pay-through-Play’.”
Mansell continued, “The passionate RuneScape community hasn’t wasted time in sharing with us how Bonds are helping them and their friends, whether through their selfless gifting of purchased Bonds to help others access premium membership content for the very first time, obtain in-game equipment or even gain admission to next month’s RuneFest 3 event.”

Of the millions of gadgets on the market, there are thirty pieces of kit that all men should own during their lifetime, according to a survey by London consumer tech event Gadget Show Live @ Christmas, which takes place at Earls Court on 1-3 November.
The 3,900 UK gadget fans taking part in the survey were asked to vote for the tech that no man (or man cave) should go without in his teens, 20s, 30s, 40s and over 50s. The results are as follows:
Teens
· iPod dock/Wireless music player
· Bottle opener
· Smartphone
· Nerf gun
· Nintendo Wii games consoles
· Laptop
20s
· iPad
· Lazy Boy gaming chair
· PlayStation 4
· Hair clippers
· Mini drinks fridge
· Digital camera
30s
· TIVO
· Head torch
· Power tools
· Sat Nav
· Leatherman/multipurpose penknife
· Digital SLR camera
40s
· Heated loo seat
· Gas BBQ
· Nose/ear hair trimmer
· All in One remote control
· 84inch LED TV
· Xbox One
Over 50s
· Metal detector
· Sit on lawnmower
· Digital radio
· Leaf-blower
· Golf buggy
· E-reader
“I love this list!” said Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury. “I can totally relate to it, especially the craving for power tools – I can’t live without my Dremmel mini saw.
“If I could add to it though, it would be a skateboard for teenagers and a gadget that every man should own but hasn’t even been invented yet - a robotic pram rocker to send babies to sleep. My digital life in my 30s was massively disrupted by crying babies and a gadget like that would have been a Godsend.”
Gadget Show Live @ Christmas takes place at Earls Court in London on 1-3 November and tickets are on sale now at <gp_link type="http" loc="//www.gadgetshowlive.net">www.gadgetshowlive.net</gp_link>. Jason Bradbury – along with his Gadget Show co-presenters Pollyanna Woodward and Jon Bentley – will present a spectacular hour-long entertainment show in the Super Theatre each day.

Frontier Developments has signed two agreements with Atari Interactive, Inc. as part of its future ecommerce plans, relating to the publication of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 (‘RCT3’) on new formats and also online distribution of the existing RCT3 and other Atari titles on PC and Mac platforms.
RCT3 was developed by Frontier and has sold approximately 7 million units on PC and Mac in the nine years since its first release in 2004, and is still selling in significant quantities today. The agreement gives the option for Frontier to develop and publish versions of the game for new formats such as today’s tablet computers and game consoles, and provides another strong title - along with Elite: Dangerous, LostWinds and Coaster Crazy - for Frontier’s self-publishing portfolio.
The distribution agreement allows Frontier to distribute RCT3 on PC and Mac, facilitating a full multi-format RCT3 offering for consumers and Atari becomes the first third party whose products will be distributed by Frontier.
David Braben, Frontier’s CEO:
“These agreements represent excellent progress as we continue to implement our self-publishing and online commerce plans. They will help accelerate our plans to grow new revenue streams from self-published and online commerce.”

Well, that was quick. Shortly after a Financial Times report to the effect, Google has confirmed that it is indeed preparing an invite system that will let current Glass owners invite up to three friends to join its Explorer program and buy a device of their own. It's not saying exactly when they'll be able to do so just yet, but is promising a rollout "over the next few weeks." What's more, Google's also announced a one-time hardware exchange for existing Glass users, which will let them swap out their eyewear for an upgraded version. There's no word on things like battery life or other spec upgrades just yet, but Google says the new version will work with "future lines of shades and prescription frames," and also come equipped with a mono earbud. Glass users can expect to receive an email sometime next month with further details on the exchange process.

Indie developer Wicked Loot revealed today a slew of new information for its newly announced game, Spark Rising, currently in development for PC and Mac.
An all-new trailer is available, which showcases details about the battle scenes, a primary focus for the game.
Wicked Loot also revealed the new ‘Conquest Mode,’ which adds a strategic layer to the game, opening up the whole galaxy to be conquered. Inspired by Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Galactic Conquest Mode, the new mode plays like a 4X game – eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate – but players must be careful of becoming too powerful as the game's multiplayer acts as an equalizer where other players can gang up against the ‘big dogs’ and coordinate to take them down.
A new reward tier provides the first 100 supporters at the $45+ donation level with a free copy of the popular voxel-creation tool, Qubicle Constructor, which costs $40 on its own. All supporters of the Kickstarter, even at the minimum donation of $10, will receive Alpha access to Spark Rising when it becomes available.
Donate on Kickstarter HERE: <gp_link type="http" loc="//www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnmasterlee/spark-rising-a-build-battle-sandbox-game?ref=live">www.kickstarter.com/projects/johnmasterlee/spark-rising-a-build-battle-sandbox-game?ref=live</gp_link>
“I founded Wicked Loot to ensure that I follow through on my dream of making games,” said John Lee, founder of Wicked Loot, Inc. “I originally had planned to form the indie studio with my best friend Vic, who passed away from cancer before it became a reality. Ultimately I decided that I was going to do it for the both of us, and to help get the dream off the ground, I sold my home to fund development. But I need everyone's help to make Spark Rising the amazing game I know it can be. The game is unique because it requires player input and feedback to shape its development, and the Kickstarter campaign is designed to encourage that.”
Spark Rising is a third-person action game, infused with strategy and sandbox creation. Players take the role of a Spark Bot whose prime directive is to build and conquer fortresses, then engage in massive battles, all in an attempt to protect rare resources. During the build phase, strongholds can be fortified with all sorts of nasty stuff - turrets, traps, barricades and troops. Players can even create their own creatures and weapons. Once the battle begins, gamers jump into unique class-based exo-suits to take down whole armies. The galaxy is for the taking, as the game expands into a 4X strategy game, where other players now enter the fray. Spark Rising is planned for release in 2014.

The organizers of the 16th annual Independent Games Festival - the longest-running and largest showcase for independent developers - are proud to announce that the event has once again seen record entries for its latest Main Competition.
In total, the GDC 2014 co-located festival attracted 656 Main Competition entries from both established indie developers and first-time entrants, handily beating last year's high score of 589.
Some of the hundreds of promising titles entered in this year's IGF Main Competition include Stoic's turn-based strategy RPG The Banner Saga, Impromptu Games's puzzle platformer InFlux, and David S. Gallant's I Get This Call Every Day.
The entrants also feature titles such as Vlambeer's Nuclear Throne, TAISO by Zacozaco, and Quadrilateral Cowboy by Blendo Games. You can check out the full list of IGF entries here.
This year, each of the IGF 2014 Main Competition award categories will feature six finalists - up from last year's five finalists - except the Nuovo Award, which will have eight. The Main Competition finalists will be announced in January 2014, and all will be available in playable form at the IGF pavilion on the GDC 2014 show floor.
Once again, winners will be honored on stage during the IGF Awards ceremony during the 2014 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in March, showcased in the IGF Pavilion on the GDC Expo Floor from March 19-21. (GDC 2013 itself will take place from March 17-21 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and the IGF-related Independent Games Summit, which has a special pass devoted to it once more this year, will take place on March 17-18.)
The festival's organizers have also provided an official JSON feed, which is updated regularly from live backend data. Teams can update their games entries, and interested IGF followers are welcome to use this feed to make their own custom IGF entry lists and pages.

Creators of the Quest for Gloryseries, Lori and Corey Cole, have teamed up with independent game studio Adventure Mob to create “Bolt Riley - A Reggae Adventure”, and return to Kickstarter to raise the funds required to finish production of the game which has been mostly produced with internal funding.
Bolt Riley is a classic 2D point and click adventure game where you play as Bolt Riley, a poor boy from Trenchtown, Jamaica, on his pathway to stardom. Bolt is struggling to survive and has to deal with a gang of Rude Boys. You go through a journey of self discovery, of love, friendship, and inspiration. It's a journey where you are introduced to Reggae music, form your band, get inspiration, write and produce your songs and even perform them. The story consists of different chapters each focusing on a different aspect of Bolt Riley’s passage into becoming a Reggae legend. This is the true story of the underdog who breaks out and becomes a worldwide sensation.
“Music has always been an important part of our lives, and we grew up with the growth of Reggae, so we jumped at the opportunity to help design this game," said Lori and Corey Cole, “This story touches upon some very important issues, such as dealing with racism, bullying, oppression and violence. As Bolt Riley, the player follows an alternative path of peace, love, and friendship while solving puzzles and helping people.”
"It’s a great honor to be working with legendary adventure game designers Lori and Corey Cole," said Oded Sharon, CEO of Adventure Mob. "Their contributions to the design, story, and puzzles in the game were unparalleled by any collaborators I have worked with in the past, and I am humbled by the experience. I’m confident that both existing Adventure Game enthusiasts and a new generation of games and Reggae music fans will find this game delightful and inspiring.”
The game features hand drawn 2D background artwork and hand drawn cel animation. It combines all the elements of a classic point and click adventure game and includes funny dialog puzzles, exploration, wacky inventory items, and of course, a rope. Another interesting feature is the introduction of a sort of second inventory, where Bolt can use special Inspirational powers he learned during his journeys. This is similar to how spells worked in the later Quest for Glory games, where you had a separate inventory for spells. The game will have voice acting by professional voice actors, and an original Reggae music soundtrack.
Work on Bolt Riley began in November 2011 with the formation of Adventure Mob, and right now is in an advanced stage of production. The company hopes to gain the necessary funding to finish production through Kickstarter.
"I’m a huge believer in crowdfunding and Kickstarter is a great alternative to traditional fundraising," Sharon added, "With so many success stories for adventure game developers, we are confident that this is the wave of the future, giving consumers the ability to support games that might not be created otherwise. I have personally backed over 140 crowdfunding campaigns myself.”

Have you ever wondered what developers really think about the latest gaming news and controversies? In this new series of Digital Foundry articles, it's game creators themselves who take centre-stage, offering a fresh, unique perspective on the issues of the day, free to write what they want about the subjects that they are passionate about, with a rock-solid assurance from us that their anonymity will be protected. In short, freshly served, informed opinion direct from the people creating the software we care about, with zero involvement from marketing or PR.In this first piece, a seasoned multi-platform developer offers up his view on hardware balance - not just in terms of the current Xbox One/PlayStation 4 bunfight, but more importantly on how the technological make-up of both consoles will define the games we play over the next few years. If you're a game-maker that would like to contribute to the Secret Developers series, please feel free to contact us through digitalfoundry@eurogamer.net and be assured that any discussions will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. With just weeks to go before the arrival of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, there seems to be a particular type of mania surrounding the technical capabilities of these two very similar machines. The raw specs reveal numbers seemingly light years apart, which clearly favour one console platform over the other, but it seems to me that at a more global level, people can't quite see the wood for the trees. Spec differences are relevant of course, but of far larger importance is the core design - the balance of the hardware - and how that defines, and limits, the "next-gen" games we will be playing over the next eight to ten years. At this point I should probably introduce myself. I'm a games developer who has worked over the years across a variety of game genres and consoles, shipping over 35 million units in total on a range of games, including some major triple-A titles I'm sure you've played. I've worked on PlayStation 2, Xbox, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, PS Vita, Nintendo DS, iPhone, Wii U, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. I'm currently working on a major next-gen title.Over my time in the industry I've seen a wide variety of game engines, development approaches, console reveals and behind-the-scenes briefings from the console providers - all of which gives me a particular perspective on the current state of next-gen and how game development has adapted to suit the consoles that are delivered to us by the platform holders.I was spurred into writing this article after reading a couple of recent quotes that caught my attention:"For designing a good, well-balanced console you really need to be considering all the aspects of software and hardware. It's really about combining the two to achieve a good balance in terms of performance... The goal of a 'balanced' system is by definition not to be consistently bottlenecked on any one area. In general with a balanced system there should rarely be a single bottleneck over the course of any given frame." - Microsoft technical fellow Andrew GoossenDismissed by many as a PR explanation for technical deficiencies when compared to PlayStation 4, the reality is that balance is of crucial importance - indeed, when you are developing a game, getting to a solid frame-rate is the ultimate goal. It doesn't matter how pretty your game looks, or how many players you have on screen, if the frame-rate continually drops, it knocks the player out of the experience and back to the real world, ultimately driving them away from your game if it persists.Maintaining this solid frame-rate drives a lot of the design and technical decisions made during the early phases of a game project. Sometimes features are cut not because they cannot be done, but because they cannot be done within the desired frame-rate.

A bunch of pads connected to a MIDI out port is as old an idea as the Akai MPC. creating a homebrew version is great, but [Scott] took his version one step further. He used old laptop trackpads to control note on and note off commands when the each pad is tapped, and also added MIDI CC values for the touch pressure and the x and y-axis position.
The trackpads were identical models, each having their own PS/2 output. A few ribbon cable to 8-pin header adapters were manufactured, and the entire ensemble encased in a wonderful maple and aluminum enclosure.
The electronics are based on an Arduino Mega with 16 clock and data points for each touchpad eating up 32 of the 54 available pins on the ‘duino. The PS/2 protocol is well documented, but running 16 separate PS/2 id most certainly not. [Scott] ended up writing his own asynchronous PS/2 communications library to get the latency of his midi device down to about 50ms.
It’s an amazing bit of kit and comparatively inexpensive, given that [Scott] now has a 16-channel Kaoss pad. Video of the device hooked up to a MicroKorg below.

They say you can't put a price on happiness, but we bet the Star Wars fan(s) who bought this LaserDisc off eBay didn't mind paying $699 for 30 minutes of bliss. After all, it contains 50 raw and behind-the-scene takes from Return of the Jedi, which the public has never seen before. Back in the day, Lucasfilm used LaserDiscs to save material due for processing on its proprietary EditDroid software, a precursor to modern-day systems like Final Cut Pro. The good news is that whoever it was that shelled out the money belongs to the light side of the Force and has chosen to share their good fortune. They're posting the disc's content bit by bit on a Facebook page, and right now, there are five videos you can watch to make the weekend better. Seeing as copyright issues might arise along the way, though, don't be surprised if the clips disappear faster than Yoda's body.
