You may tend to think of the AppleTV as a sort of walled garden, and you would mostly be right. Apple keeps tight control over what runs on their devices. That said, [David] decided to look closer at how the various ‘applications’ work. It turns out, the applications are nothing more than glorified web plugins. Using XML and Javascript, the apps simply define library function calls, giving them a consistent interface. So using fairly simply methods, the options really open up. Unfortunately, the method for adding new sites isn’t enabled by default.
Using a jailbroken AppleTV, [David] was able to do a fair bit of detective work and found a way to enable the ‘Add Site’ option, which allowed him to use his Raspberry Pi as a media server. The good news: you don’t need to jailbreak if you’re running 5.2 or 5.3… you should be able to recreate his success fairly easily. The bad news: things seem to have changed in 6.0. [David] isn’t sure if this was Apple intentionally closing a hole, or just not dotting all of their i’s.
[David] put all of his research up on Github, including the rough code. If you haven’t updated your AppleTV yet, and you have a Raspberry Pi to use as a media server, give it a try and let us know how it goes in the comments.

5.17m boxed games were sold in the UK last month, as the games industry returned to growth for the first time in years.
45 per cent more games were sold in September 2013 compared with the same month a year before, according to GfK Chart-Track.
Grand Theft Auto V is almost solely responsible for the spike, with Rockstar’s game accounting for 52 per cent of games sold last month. GTA V has already sold over 2.6m copies in the UK.
In total, stores generated £187.2m in September, which also saw the release of FIFA 14. For the first nine months of the year, UK games stores generated more revenue from software than it did during the first nine months of 2012.

Ideas are already in the pipeline for Grand Theft Auto VI, the president of developer Rockstar North has said.
“We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do,” Leslie Benzies told Develop in the first part of its Inside Rockstar North series. “We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas.
“GTA Online is the focus right now. There ain’t no rest between finishing V and then Online. Plus we have some other things – stuff, DLC, I don’t know how to describe it exactly – that we’d like to do, and we’ll pick the right ones.”
Elsewhere in the piece Benzies confesses that GTA IV’s darker tone was as a result of the experiences the studio had suffered previously.
“GTA IV was dark times,” he added. “We’d been Hot Coffee-d. We were thinking ‘We make video games, and [the US authorities are] doing this to us?!’”

“I consider skateboarding an art form, a lifestyle and a sport. ‘Action sport’ would be the least offensive categorisation.” – Tony Hawk.I don’t know about you, but I could easily attribute that quote to my relationship with videogames. And I think we can all at least relate to Hawk’s need to find a ‘least offensive’ categorisation for his profession and past-time in the public domain. I was intending to write about how I was still playing Skate 3 (which I am, and you should play it, too) but the striking parallels between gaming and skating wouldn’t let me go.Around 15 years ago skate culture enraptured me in the same way that videogame culture had some years before. It had its own language, attitude, t-shirts, symbols, equipment, clans. It also offered shots of adrenaline and a levelling up structure (from Roces boots to K2) that I could invest time, money and resources in. As a young skater – at first recreational inline skating was my thing before ‘graduating’ to aggressive inline and some very large bruises – I was absorbed by the science, speed and depth of this ‘action sport’. I failed miserably when I first started out skating ramps, parks and anything that would support my bodyweight and ego. I nose-dived vert ramps, slipped off half-pipes into groups of bystanders and flew over spines like a ballerina before landing like a sack of sentient beef dropped from a diving board. I failed, basically. And then I did what all skaters do: I got up. I went back to the start. I hit restart on my progress for that day, that session, that trick.Skating, whether it be on a board or strapped into a pair of skates, is about freedom within strict systems and rules. You can perform liberating feats of mid-air daftness – from a simple kickflip to a full-blown Christ Air – but if you don’t manage your velocity, your balance, and stick that landing your face will be sanding a rough piece of concrete in no time.

The owner and operator of the Silk Road website, on which illegal items such as drugs and hacked accounts were sold, has been arrested by the FBI.
Ross William Ulbricht, known on the site as the ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’, is due to be charged with the conspiracy to commit drug trafficking, money laundering and attempted murder.
The Silk Road appeared in 2011 and was only accessible using the anonymity-providing Tor network, which stopped tracing of users. The site also used the digital currency Bitcoin to conduct transactions without sharing personal data.
Illegal goods sold on the site included drugs, guns, hacked accounts, banking Trojans, child pornography and services including targeted hacks and hitmen offering to murder for a price.
Ulbricht’s arrest involved the FBI tracing the first mentions of ‘Silk Road’ back to a user called ‘Altoid’ on drug forum Shroomery, who was requesting that an “IT pro in the Bitcoin community” contact "rossulbricht at gmail dot com".
According to the FBI, Ulbricht also made several mistakes in his operation of the site, which left the necessary holes needed for the FBI to track him down to a flat in San Francisco, where he was known to his flatmates as ‘Josh’.
While Ulbricht – as both himself and under the persona of Roberts – had posted messages claiming that the Silk Road not only provided freedom but also removed the violence that often occurred in drug deals, and that he abhorred, Ulbricht himself was revealed to have ordered several hitmen to execute and torture individuals.

Sony’s PS4 is to outsell Microsoft’s Xbox One this Christmas, with approximately 33 million consoles sold in total, IDC has predicted.
The research company stated that the number of shipped consoles would be the first year-on-year increase since 2009, with online-connected gamers set to exceed 165 million by 2017.
“The opportunity to sell these gamers digital assets through Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4 online storefronts will grow substantially in the next several years,” commented Lewis Ward, Research Manager, of Gaming at IDC.
“The Chinese government's recent decision to lift the ban on consoles should lead to millions of additional hardware bundle sales for the likes of Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony within three years,” he added.
IDC said that the PS4’s success would be due to a “number of factors, most notably the PS4’s lower price point”.
On Valve’s recent announcement of Steam OS, Steam Machines and Steam Controller, Ward said that “it appears unlikely that Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony will be driven out of the living room from a gaming perspective by 2017 as result of non-console competition from the likes of Valve/Steam, OUYA, cable/telecom companies, or related hardware and Web service providers".

Two months have passed since we last saw an update to the Raspberry Pi port of XBMC, but the tail end of September finally delivered some fresh code. Chief among the changes is a speed boost that makes browsing media libraries on Raspbmc much smoother and snappier. With the new software onboard, boxes now have a bevy of bugs fixed, boast support for Windows Media Center PVR and have a Wake On LAN feature for flipping on remote hardware before XBMC starts. Creator Sam Nazarko notes that folks who rely on AirPlay shouldn't upgrade to iOS 7, as it could introduce some hiccups. Visit the source for the full changelog, or restart your machine to snatch the latest release. If you're wondering just how much pep your Raspberry Pi will get, hit the break for a demo video.

[toddfx] wanted to put his Raspberry Pi to work and set about creating one of the best stereos we’ve ever seen: It’s called the Audio Infuser 4700, and turns a conglomeration of old disused stereo equipment into a functional piece of art.
[toddfx] used a Raspberry Pi to stream music over WiFi, but also wanted to play some classic vinyl. He took apart an old Yamaha YP-D4 turntable. stripped it to the bone, and created a fantastic oak enclosure around it. To this, he added a seven-band graphic EQ, aux jacks (both in and out), and a tiny 5″ CRT from an old portable TV.
Where this build really gets great is the fabrication. The front panels have all their graphics and lettering engraved via a toner-transfer like method using copper sulphate and salt. [todd] got the idea from this thread and we have to say the results are unbelievable.
Even though this awesome device only used for music, [toddfx] used the tiny color CRT to its fullest. Flick one switch, and it’s an oscilloscope-like display. Flick another switch, and it’s the output of the Raspberry Pi loaded up with a few MAME games including Pacman, Asteroids, and Space Invaders.
[toddfx] put up a build page for his Audio Infuser and an awesome video for his project, available below.

UK trade body UKIE and age ratings firm PEGI has rejected criticism that it’s not doing enough to prevent children getting its hands on adult video games.
Last week, the PEGI age ratings system came under scrutiny after videos showing children younger than 18 receiving GTA V appeared on YouTube. Mainstream media, including the BBC, suggested that parents were unaware of the content they were buying for their children.
“The industry organises campaigns on a regular basis to inform as many consumers as possible,” said PEGI’s Dirk Bosmans. “Every single bit of marketing should carry a PEGI label. So each time the game is marketed on the side of a bus, on TV, or in magazines, you will see the PEGI label.
“Parents who take a sincere interest in what their kids are playing will have found out about PEGI ratings. We cannot force them to do that. Ironically, the only ones not inclined to share information about PEGI, are the tabloids. Lots of sensationalist stories and pointing fingers, but hardly a paragraph on age ratings and the responsibility that parents carry as well.”
UKIE CEO Jo Twist added: “The games industry takes the health and wellbeing of players very seriously. We’re always looking at new ways to raise awareness of PEGI, for example we have an askaboutgames stand at this year’s Eurogamer Expo.”

APA members claim it is important to review violence in games following the Sandy Hook shooting
Over 200 psychologists and researchers have called on the American Psychological Association to form a task force for the review of research into the effects of violent media.
Though some American lawmakers have called for more investigations in the aftermath of several shooting rampages throughout the country in the past year, an open letter from researchers asks only that the APA check to see if the existing research is reliable.
“Particularly in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, whether rightly or wrongly, much discussion has focused on this issue,” reads the letter.
“Much is at stake regarding the way scientific information is communicated to the general public, the way in which policy statements can set scientific agendas and the credibility of the field as a careful and objective science.”
In 2005, the APA updated its policy to reflect its view that exposure to violent media “increases feelings of hostility, thoughts about aggression, suspicions about the motives of others, and demonstrates violence as a method to deal with potential conflict situations."
The 'Resolution on Violence in Video Games and Interactive Media' also suggested that violent games could have more of an effect on children than other media, since games require active participation, and stated an intention to advocate for the reduction of violence in games.
The group behind the letter claims the previous research on which the APA penned this resolution is heavily biased, based on flawed methodology, and draws conclusions from weak evidence.
“During the video game epoch, youth violence in the United States and elsewhere has plummeted to 40-year lows, not risen as would have been expected if the 2005 APA resolution were accurate,” said the group.
“Although we do not assert video games are responsible for this decline (such would be an ecological fallacy), this decline in societal violence is in conflict with claims that violent video games and interactive media are important public health concerns.”
The Entertainment Software Association has released its own statement applauding the researchers for their efforts, while also pointing to other studies that found no causal link between violent media and real-world violence.
“A host of respected researchers and numerous authorities - including the US Supreme Court - have examined the scientific record and found that it does not establish any causal link between violent media and real-world violence," said ESA president and CEO Michael D Gallagher.
"We agree with these experts that additional APA's analysis must be objective, fact-based, and peer-reviewed, and must comprehensively examine all relevant factors."

Games-centric TV platform Ginx has acquired Player Channel.
The moves means that as of 6:00am this morning Ginx is now available to an estimated 13m French homes and a further 3.5m in Germany.
The company will also expand its advertising operations to provide for specific ad opportunities for UK, French and pan-European markets.
“Video gaming is about to enter another golden age with the upcoming launches of next-generation gaming consoles,” Ginx CEO Michiel Bakker stated. “But even before they are here, we have seen the extraordinary success of the Grand Theft Auto V game taking over $800 million on its first day, making it the biggest entertainment release of all time.
“So it goes without saying that video gaming has resolutely entered the mainstream. GINX is dedicated to bringing the world of videogames to TV screens around the world and I am very excited to be able to announce this huge leap in our global footprint today.”

The UK Government's new Ministry of Defence cyber reserve unit could actually increase risks to internet systems and cause a "cyber arms race", says Kaspersky Lab.
The department will recruit hundreds of computer experts as 'cyber reservists'. They will work alongside regular forces to protect critical computer networks, safeguard data, build cyber defences and protect the UK’s national security.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: "In response to the growing cyber threat, we are developing a full-spectrum military cyber capability, including a strike capability, to enhance the UK’s range of military capabilities. Increasingly, our defence budget is being invested in high-end capabilities such as cyber and intelligence and surveillance assets to ensure we can keep the country safe.
"The Cyber Reserves will be an essential part of ensuring we defend our national security in cyberspace. This is an exciting opportunity for internet experts in industry to put their skills to good use for the nation, protecting our vital computer systems and capabilities."
But David Emm, Senior Security Researcher at anti-virus software vendor Kaspersky Lab, has outlined the possible knock-on effects of creating the cyber reserve unit.
"It now seems that the Government is saying that it considers that 'offence is the best form of defence'," he said.
"While it's understandable that governments might want to adopt such a position, doing so introduces a very real possibility of a cyber arms race and, accordingly, increased risks to internet-based systems everywhere. After all, if one government decides to openly engage in cyber offence, others will be sure to follow suit.
"And a cyber offence escalation would increase the risk of the technologies involved ending up in the wrong hands - to be manipulated for malevolent ends. Unlike traditional weapons, tools used in cyberwarfare are very easy to clone and reprogram by adversaries or other threat actors to be used in sustained strikes.
"The only effective way to counter this trend is for governments to work together towards the establishment of a cyber arms limitation agreement to prevent the continued escalation of cyberattacks."

Irrational Games' blockbuster BioShock Infinite and EA DICE's Mirror's Edge weren't built with the Oculus Rift in mind, but both are part of a huge list of games supported by a new piece of software available today: VorpX. The still-in-beta, $40 application promises to convert a variety of games from monitor-exclusive experiences to Oculus Rift-ready VR games, including the aforementioned two and a lengthy list of others.
As none of the supported games are meant to work with the Rift, a variety of workarounds are implemented by VorpX. Clicking in and holding down your mouse wheel, for instance, allows you to "edge peek," which allows users to look freely at the edges of their field-of-view instead of it moving with the headset's movement. Additionally, since rendering two distinct views of high-def, modern games is taxing, VorpX uses a workaround called "Z-buffer," which is apparently "the highest performing" of the two available options, but not as pretty. You can also choose "Geometry 3D," which does render two distinct feeds and, well, we're jealous of whatever system you've got that's running that smoothly. Not every game supports both modes, but a fair number do (there's a list right here comparing both). Head below for a handful of video demonstrations of VorpX in action, as well as the full list of supported games.

A jarring pan with your tripod can ruin a shot in your film, and tilting up or down usually requires some loosening and tightening kung fu to keep gravity from taking over. The “Power Panner” is a remote-controlled device that fits between the tripod and the camera, handling pans and tilts with ease. When [NeXT] found one at the Capitol Flea Market for $5, he didn’t care about the missing remote. He bought the Panner, dragged it home, andhacked together his own remote with a Sega Master Pad.
After researching similar devices online, [NeXT] had determined the original remote’s pinout: essentially a D-pad with adjustable speed control. He decided to ignore the speed pins and to instead search for a suitable replacement controller. A Sega Master Pad offered the most straightforward solution, so [NeXT] went to work separating out the wires and soldering them to a DIN connector. He couldn’t find the right plug to fit the Panner’s DIN-7 jack, so he substituted a DIN-8 with the extra pin snapped off.
Rather than use the remaining two buttons for speed control, [NeXT] chose to feed them directly into his camera to drive the focus and shutter, but the Master Pad’s wiring posed a problem: the camera would have to share the Power Panner’s ground, and the Panner plugs into the wall via a 6V adapter. Fingers crossed, he decided to push ahead and was relieved that everything worked. We suspect the shared ground won’t be a problem as long as one device uses a floating power supply, which the Panner can provide either through the proper wall wart or by using its 4 AA battery option.
If you’re in the mood for more camera hacks, check out the sound-dampening and waterproofing build from last week.

[Andrei] is cruising in style thanks to his Raspi-powered CarPC project, which is a steal at $200 considering all the functionality it provides. This is an update to the work we saw from him back in March. Rather than completely replace his car’s head unit, [Andrei] simply relocated it to the trunk, permanently set it to the “aux input” source, and connected the Raspberry Pi’s audio output. The Pi runs a Raspbian Wheezy distro with XBMC and is mounted in the storage area beneath the middle armrest. [Andrei] filled the hole left by the old stereo with a 7-inch touchscreen display, which connects to the Pi through both HDMI and USB. If you throw the car into reverse, the Pi automatically selects the touchscreen’s AV input to display the car’s backup camera, then flips back when put in drive.
The unit also provides navigation via the open-source Navit software using OpenStreetMapdata. An ST22 SkyTraq GPS receiver grabs coordinates and feeds them into the Raspi, which updates the on-screen map once per second. You’ll want to watch the video after the break (Audio Warning: Tupac) to see for yourself just how well the CarPC came together,

From just a distant drum beat ten years ago to a deafening crescendo today; there’s no denying the popularity of free-to-play games right now. Although some hardcore players tend to dismiss free-to-play as a fad or cynical business model, the huge financial success of games like Clash of Clans, Candy Crush and Real Racing 3 has made this movement increasingly difficult to ignore. As a result, Sony and Microsoft are now embracing a free-to-play future, with the release of titles like LittleBigPlanet, Planetside 2 and War Thunder. However, do publishers and developers with a long heritage in console game design really have the understanding and skills required to make the transition to free-to-play?The thing that publishers and developers often overlook is that free-to-play is a type of game and not just simply a business model. Therefore simply creating a game, throwing in some in-app purchases and giving it away for free won’t equal free-to-play success. The approach is much more fundamental than this and developers need to stop thinking about building a product and start to better understand how to run a service. At the core of free-to-play is good gameplay, there is nothing more predictive about how likely someone is to spend money in a free-to-play game than how long they play. Unlike premium products where a good brand or strong marketing can convince players to buy the game, with free-to-play the game needs to be fun from the moment players start playing if it is going to have any hope of making a return on the investment. This drives a service mentality; keeping the customers happy is key and as we all know from playing Diner Dash your players require constant care and attention.
